MANAGER’S COLUMN

STEVE

HOUSHAM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Gateshead to our home this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Gateshead in the National League. Our last home game saw us gain our first victory for a while although I was pleased with the points, it was the spirit and desire the players played with that got their just rewards.

claim our first league double and that would be a great achievement.

to our best to progress in this great competition.

We will need to show and produce our best to achieve this, but we a great belief that we can.

I would like to say what a great turnout for the Q and A we had at the club on Thursday 24th. It was great to meet and answer your questions, it was all positive and a

The trophy draw has been made

We have been on our travels for our last two games. First of all Solihull Moors where we was looking to produce back-to-back wins. It was a closely matched game, but a couple of lapses in concentration and a first half performance which didn’t match our previous game against Sutton cost us on the day. It was a disappointing result. Then it was a quick turnaround as we travelled to Chester on Tuesday night with a bit of a depleted squad and, after a good battling first half display matching Chester in most departments, we started the second half with a sloppy display and in 5 minute spell we got punished for our sloppiness. Today we come up against Gateshead and will be looking to

it’s a tough draw being away from home, but one we will be hoping to progress in. Alfreton will be a tough test they have some very experienced players in there squad, but it’s a tie were we have to go and perform

great night. We must take that into our games as a group and keep believing Steve Housham First-Team Manager

North Ferriby United return to home comforts after back-to-back defeats on the road and entertain Gateshead this afternoon... North Ferriby United host Gateshead looking to record their first ever league double at this level of the footballing pyramid. The two clashed in September with the Villagers registering their maiden away victory in a 1-0 victory, after Reece Thompson’s goal proved decisive. Looking at the form guides for both the two come into this fixture on the back of successive defeats ,with the Heed losing to both Woking and Tranmere in the league, while Ferriby have lost to Solihull Moors and Chester in midweek. 4

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Their most recent defeat extended their winless run to four matches - although they have recorded two draws in that time. For the Villagers, still rooted to the foot of the standings, they need to start picking up victories sooner rather than later with the gap to safety stretched to six points. If Ferriby manage to claim the three-point haul it would set up the festive period nicely given they face Maidstone United and York City back-to-back

THE PLAYERS

Who are the key men from Gateshead to keep your eye on this afternoon? We introduce them to you here...

THE TEAM GOALKEEPERS Dan Hanford Sam Johnson

DEFENDERS James Bolton Jamal Fyfield Liam Hogan George Smith Manny Smith

DAN HANFORD

JAMES BOLTON

Hanford signed a one-year deal with the Heed in August 2016, following his release by Carlisle United. Hanford moved to Rochdale as a teenager, only to find his opportunities limited. A spell with the Glenn Hoddle Academy followed, before joining Hereford United. After two years at Edgar Street, the keeper spent a season with Floriana before joining Carlisle.

Bolton agreed a three-year deal with Gateshead just days after helping FC Halifax Town to FA Trophy glory at Wembley. The 23-year-old had been brought to West Yorkshire by former Shaymen boss Neil Aspin, joining on loan from Macclesfield late in the 2013-14 campaign. After making his switch permanent, he went on to make more than 80 appearances before leaving to reunite with Aspin.

LIAM HOGAN

JAMAL FYFIELD

Manager Neil Aspin moved quickly to land versatile defender Hogan from Tranmere Rovers following completion of the 2015-16 campaign. The 27-year-old had previously played under Aspin at FC Halifax Town between 2010 and 2013, winning two promotions with the Shaymen before leaving for Fleetwood Town. He then turned out for Tranmere but injury restricted his appearances.

Fyfield became the third former Wrexham player to sign for Gateshead ahead of the 2016-17 campaign, turning down a new deal at the Racecourse Ground to move to the North East. Comfortable at left-back or as a centre-half, the 27-year-old had previously played under former Gateshead boss Gary Mills at York City, earning promotion to the Football League with the Minstermen in 2012.

THE OPPOSITION

THE DANGERMAN

DANNY JOHNSON GEORGE SMITH

MANNY SMITH

Left-sided defender Smith joined the Tynesiders from hometown club Barnsley in June. The 20-year-old came through the ranks at Oakwell. He went on to make over 40 appearances for the Tykes at firstteam level, a virtual ever-present in the first-half of the 2015-16 campaign. Smith also took in a loan spell at Crawley last term, figuring four times for the Red Devils.

Smith put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the International Stadium following his release by Wrexham in May. A centre-half by trade, the 27-year-old came through the ranks at Walsall, making over 150 appearances for the Saddlers at firstteam level before moving to Notts County in 2012. He linked up with Wrexham where he played every minute of the 2014-15 campaign.

PADDY McLAUGHLIN

WES YORK

Capped by Northern Ireland at U21 level, McLaughlin linked up with Gateshead ahead of the 2015-16 campaign, following a successful trial period at the International Stadium. Joining York City between 2011 and 2013, a virtual everpresent as the Minstermen secured a return to the Football League in his maiden campaign at Bootham Crescent.

Neil Aspin’s first permanent signing as Gateshead boss, York linked up with the Tynesiders following his release by Wrexham in May. The winger was an almost ever-present for the Dragons during his two-year stay at the Racecourse Ground, finding the net 18 times in 90 appearances.

23-year-old Johnson struck 15 goals for the Heed during the 2015-16 campaign – his first at the International Stadium. The frontman was on the books at both Middlesbrough and Hartlepool United as a youngster, before taking in a spell with Spanish third-tier side Real Murcia.

THE GAFFER

NEIL ASPIN Aspin was appointed manager of his hometown club in November 2015, six weeks after leaving FC Halifax Town. He began his managerial career with Harrogate Town in 2005, guiding the club to a series of top-half finishes in the then Conference North. He was appointed Halifax boss in 2009, leading the Shaymen to back-to-back promotions.

CLUB HISTORY

CLUB HISTORY

GATESHEAD The original Gateshead AFC was formed in 1930 when neighbours South Shields moved to Gateshead because of financial difficulties. The North Easterners were founder members of the newly formed Fourth Division. Despite an average placing of ninth in 21 Third Division North campaigns two years after the introduction of the Fourth Division came Gateshead’s shock dismissal from the Football League. The club had applied for re-election only once before in a relatively successful 30-year period, but were unceremoniously cast aside in 1960. Gateshead had finished third-bottom with both Oldham Athletic and Hartlepools United below them, but polled only 18 votes and were unjustly voted out of the League. A brief spell in the Northern Counties League and then six years in North Regional League followed. In 1968, Gateshead became founder members of the Northern Premier League. in 1973, seven leagues and 43 years after its inception – Gateshead AFC ceased to exist. A new club called Gateshead Town played the following season in the local Northern Combination League but, astonishingly, history was soon to repeat itself. South Shields, then members of the Northern Premier League, sold their Simonside headquarters and moved to a new home at Gateshead Stadium. South Shields, then members of the Northern Premier League, sold their Simonside headquarters and moved to a new home at Gateshead Stadium.

However, in 1977 – after only three years of operation – came the shock announcement that United were to disband – the third body blow to hit Gateshead supporters inside two decades. It looked like the end of senior football in the town until another phoenix, this time in the form of the current Gateshead FC, rose from the ashes in 1977. Replacing Gateshead United in the Northern Premier League for the 1977-78 season, the new club won the title in 1983. After two years in the Conference, the Tynesiders returned to the Northern Premier League and were crowned champions for the second time in 1986. Their second spell in the Conference lasted just one season, though they were quick to bounce back, and reclaimed their place at the top table of non-league football in 1990. A productive period ended in 1998 when the club was relegated back to the Northern Premier League after eight consecutive seasons of Conference football. Relegation to the Northern Premier League First Division followed but, after one season, Gateshead were back in the top-tier of the NPL.

North. They then overcame AFC Telford United in the Conference North play-off final to reach the Conference. The first campaign back in nonleague’s elite division proved to be a difficult one with top-flight status only retained on the final day of the season on goal difference. The 2010 season brought a 14th-place finish and a spot in the semi-final of the FA Trophy for the first time, the Heed then finishing eighth in 2012 while reaching the last eight of the Trophy. The following year, however, Gateshead recorded their highest placing in English football finished third. Hopes of reclaiming their League status were quashed, however, as Gary Mills’ side were edged out by Cambridge United. After ending the season in tenthplace, Mills departed for Wrexham with Malcolm Crosby replacing Mills, but – despite a promising start – the 61-year-old was sacked after less than six months in the role.

The future for a club with a proud, if somewhat chequered, past took a turn for the better when wealthy Gateshead-born businessman, Graham Wood, took over in 2006.

Crosby’s replacement was ex-FC Halifax Town boss Neil Aspin, himself born and bred in the Tyneside town. Under Aspin, the Heed finished ninth in the Vanarama National League.

The Heed struck 93 league goals in 2008, seeing off Buxton in the play-off final. Back-to-back promotions were achieved when the rejuvenated Tynesiders claimed the runners-up spot in the Conference

After releasing all bar a handful of players ahead of the new campaign, Aspin effectively has a clean slate to work with as Gateshead begin their eighth consecutive season in the fifth-tier. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE REVIEW Lincoln City moved to the top of the Vanarama National League after a 1-0 win over Wrexham at Sincil Bank on Tuesday night, despite playing for more than an hour with ten-men. With 14 minutes gone on the clock former Nuneaton Town man Elliott Whitehouse grabbed his second goal since moving to Lincoln recently. In-form third-placed Tranmere Rovers made it nine unbeaten after a good 1-0 win at the International Stadium against Gateshead. It took only 3 minutes for Rovers to take the lead when on-loan Ben Tollitt fired past Tynesiders` keeper Dan Hanford after a long, unchallenged run. Dover Athletic moved into the top five after an emphatic 6-0 drubbing of Sutton United at Gander Green Lane. Dagenham & Redbridge made it back-to-back home defeats to slide out of the play-off places. John Still`s men were beaten 1-0 by a Torquay United side in need of the points at the opposite end of the table. However, the Gulls were grateful to keeper Brendan Moore for keeping the scoreline blank when he produced a couple of excellent saves, most notably from Luke Guttridge. But the longer the game went on, the more frustrated the hosts and their 12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

supporters became and it came as little surprise that when the deadlock was finally broken, it was Torquay who achieved it when on-loan striker Kieffer Moore, who had seen a header tipped onto the bar by Daggers` keeper Elliot Justham a few minutes earlier, fired home what turned out to be the winning goal with 14 minutes remaining. Chester moved above Eastleigh in the table after the Spitfires suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Gallagher Stadium against Maidstone United. Eastleigh trailed after only 5 minutes to Dan Sweeney’s near-post finish but were level after a disappointing first half when Mikael Mandron scored his sixth goal in seven games – converting a 48th minute penalty after new signing Bondz N’Gala had been fouled. Joe Partington gave away a penalty for a foul on former Eastleigh forward Yemi Odubade and Bobby-Joe Taylor made no mistake. Fabio Saraiva’s goal of the season contender earned Woking a 3-1 victory over Bromley on a freezing cold night at the Laithwaite Community Stadium - the Cards third victory in their last four league games. Solihull Moors were looking for backto-back wins under new boss Liam

McDonald when they travelled up to the Merseyrail Community Stadium to face struggling Southport. But they had to make do with a hard-earned point from a 0-0 draw in which Moors` keeper Daniel Lewis was outstanding. At the other end, top scorer Akwasi Asante hit the bar in the first half and then right near the end, Jack Byrne had a header cleared off the line. But in between, Port dominated and the visitors were grateful to Lewis for keeping a clean sheet. The point lifted Southport out of the drop zone, but two other strugglers faced an early season `six-pointer` as York City hosted Guiseley AFC at Bootham Crescent. The home side came into the game on a dreadful run of fifteen without a win, but looked to have turned the corner as they managed to break the deadlock just before the hour-mark when substitute Callum Rzonca’s first goal for the club looked to have sealed the points. But just 5 minutes from time, Jake Cassidy grabbed a crucial equaliser for the Lions, netting a Simon Walton freekick from close range. The games between Macclesfield Town and Barrow AFC and Boreham Wood and Braintree Town were both postponed due to frozen pitches.

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

GUEST COLUMN

View From The

STANDS Regular columnist Sam Shepherd takes a look at the recent trials and tribulations of North Ferriby... Ferriby continued their strong start to November with a home win over Sutton United, but since then they have been brought back down to earth with a couple of tough defeats on the road. Ferriby dominated the Sutton game from the start and made this supremacy pay early on when Sam Topliss opened the scoring after 11-minutes. When Reece Thompson doubled the lead early in the secondhalf it looked like Ferriby would go on to record a very comfortable home win, but things aren’t that simple this season and Sutton got back into the game. They scored in the 74th-minute to set up a tense last 15 minutes. On a few occasions this season Ferriby have succumbed to late pressure and ended up dropping points, but on this occasion the luck was with them and they held on for their first win since mid-September. The Villagers had gone unbeaten in the three games in November, but sadly that run ended last Saturday at Solihull Moors. Steve Housham will have sent his side out hoping to get at least a point, but they were unable to match the performance of the week, before and were beaten relatively easily 22

2-0. They did have the first chance when Kyle Wootton was inches away from prodding a cross into the net, but it wasn’t to be and Solihull made Ferriby pay for missing the chance. The game ended on a sour note when Curtis Bateson was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Housham was not happy with the

decision as it came in the dying seconds of stoppage time and it is a blow to lose Bateson for a game just as he is coming back to full fitness. Tuesday night away games are never easy and Ferriby have never got anything from trips to the Deva Stadium in Chester. Unfortunately their poor run away from home continued as Chester ran out 3-0 winners. Again Ferriby had a good chance to open the scoring on

the counter attack, but Ryan Kendall was denied by the goalkeeper. It was 0-0 at half time, but some poor defensive decisions cost the Villagers in the second-half and they were 2-0 down just ten minutes into the second-half. Today we welcome 10th placed Gateshead to the Eon Visual Media

Stadium. The visitors have lost their last two games and have only won two of their last eight so Ferriby should be hopeful they can get something from the game if they play like they did in their last home match against Sutton. Ferriby defeated Gateshead in the reverse fixture in September and a repeat today would be fantastic. Enjoy the game! Sam
