CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the Officials, Players and Supporters of Soham Town Rangers FC, on this November Saturday afternoon, and after some hospitality and hopefully an enjoyable game they all have a safe return journey home. May I also personally once again take this opportunity to welcome all those local residents that have decided to join us as new supporters through our season ticket initiative this season. I know that the benefit of the £30.00 season ticket for four has made a lot of difference to the families that are involved at this time with this initiative, and I hope during the next few weeks

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

we have more families join us and become new supporters. Also may I thank all the schools that have joined the Passport Scheme that allows all persons under the age of 14 to come to a match free of charge as long as they are accompanied by an elder who is only charged the concession price. And finally also all the schools that have arranged to visit the club during the season, the club allow them in for free as we feel that the children may go home and tell their parents how much they enjoyed the experience, but whatever scheme you are involved in you are very welcome to SCT as the club’s guests.

I must take a moment at this time to thank Mike Green for all the hard work he has given to the club, and he must be proud to see all his hard work come to fruition, seeing the children from all of the schools attending the matches. I must say we really enjoy the question and answers session that I get involved with the young children it’s great to see their smiling faces, you never know there could be a future TTFC player amongst them. Last Saturday we went to Witham FC hoping for good fortunes, but even after a good start with an early goal we did not manage

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

to come away with a win, unfortunately in my opinion we threw the points away. We kn1ow we are better than the second half display, we cannot use the excuse that we had new players on the pitch, they are all professionals so that are fully capable of settling in, and I would like to welcome all the new players to the club. It was great to see Alex playing in goal, I feel together with Tyler, we will have a pair that will be fit for purpose for the rest of the season. Finally, the game ended with an unacceptable melee between both teams and some Witham substitutes that got a bit ugly, it ruined a very wet afternoon of football. Now due to this result we find ourselves back in next to bottom of the league, which is totally unacceptable for the squad that we have here at the club. Both Tommy and I know it, and be assured we are not happy about the position we find ourselves in, it’s great for me to give my opinion about the position we find ourselves in as chairman, but it must be terrible for Tommy and his management team, they are the ones that put all the hours in to ensure our players are playing as he wants. But as I have said on many occasions, when a player crosses the white line Tommy cannot do much about it, but as I said to

Tommy during one of our usual chat after a match, he said you alright chair? My reply is always I am Tommy how are you and I know how frustrating it must me for him, he knows the quality of our players and what they can achieve. I will say he is always so positive and be assured he will take whatever action is appropriate to ensure the best comes out of those playing in the club colours and we once again rise up the league table, so let’s all get behind Tommy and the boys and together we will succeed. Finally, a big thank you to Ian Docker my Director of Football who is today, with others, running the trials of our new initiative of Sports Technology Apprenticeship courses being operated out of Long Lane our working in the community base, hopefully he will have out first cohort of pupils aged between 16-18. Please keep supporting the football club we all need your support because that’s what we are all here for, so I thank you for your continued support. Remember I will only support the club if I see that the supporters want the club to function. Enjoy the match! Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Bayliss Avenue for today’s game against Soham Town Rangers – the first of two home games for us in the next four days. We go into today on the back of a disappointing afternoon at Witham last weekend. Yet again, it was a game that we could have won on chances, but sadly after a stop start second half that seemed to pass us by, we came away with nothing! All in all by the end it was a frustrating game of football. We’ve come a long way in a short space of time as just a couple of months ago, people couldn’t see

where the goals were coming from as we weren’t creating anywhere nearly enough chances. But now we’re bemoaning the good areas that we’re getting into and the chances that we aren’t taking. We’ve everyone back now fit for the first time in a while – the illness and niggles and knocks seem to have eased. I still think that this league is still there to be got at wherever you are today in the table – at the top, in the middle or at the bottom – anyone who can put a run together will catapult themselves up this league and I do believe that we are a side capable of doing that.

We’ve still got to sort out that final piece of the jigsaw which is at the moment our final ball and at times our finishing too. We should be killing teams off – I know it’s coming, and the players do too! We are now a side that needs to get into a routine of winning games and I’m sure you’ll all agree that that will give everyone a lift! We haven’t had a bad start to the month, but it’s important that we bounce back today and on Tuesday when we’re home again. We’ve got to get our heads down and keep going through November and December making sure we start picking up more points and moving up the table so that we can go into the New Year

MANAGER’S NOTES

heading upwards towards where we want to be – in or around the Play-Off area going into 2017. Soham are around us in the table and it goes without saying that today will be another difficult game for us, but every game is in this league as I keep saying. Yet again last Saturday, there were a lot of surprising scores around and if I were a betting man I don’t think that there would have been many predictions right. It’s happening week in week out and that’s why I think there aren’t too many managers in the league flapping or panicking at the moment. I know what we’ve got at this club and I know what I’m seeing – we are capable of putting a run together and the way that the league is that “all” we have to do! There’s still plenty of time

THE TREATMENT ROOM

THE

TREATMENT

ROOM

In her regular column, first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list...

So today we welcome Soham Town Rangers to Bayliss Avenue. You might have noticed that I’ve some “company” on the bench these days. Her names Rhyanna and she started off with me last year on a final year work placement from the University of Kent – the same one I went to. Now qualified she decided she wanted to stay at the club and gain more experience. She’s a great girl and a massive help to me especially with the run of bad luck on the injury front we’ve had this year!

On that subject and ironically it’s been a quiet few weeks for us in the treatment room having all the boys return back from injury. Joe Vines came back into the squad and made an early appearance after Ellis pulled up with a tight groin during our game at Witham Town. At time of going to print we hope to have Ellis back for today’s game. In the same game, after a bloody collision between Kinchy and one of their players, I’m happy to say no

stitches or hospital visits were required and he will be available for today’s game. I’ve been working with Walks for a couple of weeks now and I’m pleased to report how well he is doing, his scar is healing well and he is making great progress in his road to recovery. Short report from me this week and long may that continue… Carly Payne First-team Physio

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Good afternoon everyone, thanks for coming to our latest home game against Soham Town Rangers, I hope they have a good trip and enjoy their brief stay with us at SCT. Our season continues to be a roller coaster of performances, despite including new signings Alex Teniola and goalkeeper Aleksander Gogic, we still slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Witham Town. A result that saw us slip, back into the bottom four and with no match this week that has not changed. On a difficult playing surface (as always at Witham), we had a great

start Ellis Green putting us ahead with only 5 minutes on the clock, but by half-time Witham had clawed their way back into a 2-1 lead. The second-half was a physical 45 minutes with both sides adding a goal each and Witham running out 3-2 winners on the day. We need desperately to put 3 or 4 victories together to pull away from the bottom of the table and ease the pressure on performances, but this is a tough division and results are difficult to predict. Our game on Tuesday is another tough one when Hornchurch visit

us and they are a side that are really under achieving they have some good experienced players. Soham will offer us a tough game today, they too are nearer the bottom of the table they would have like I’m sure, they are always organised and difficult to break down and they are a hard working side and this, like all matches, will be a test. Enjoy the game today. Dave Joy Club Secretary

SOHAM TOWN RANGERS

Thamesmead Town face a big test of character coming up against Soham Town Rangers, a side only two places about the club.

Soham have clawed their way out of the relegation zone after a string of positive results in the month of October. Maximum points were yielded against AFC Hornchurch, Cheshunt, Heybridge Swifts and Norwich United, while they also notched a draw with Bowers & Pitsea. That said, the side haven’t so far translated that form into November

14

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

with a draw against Waltham Abbey before back-to-back defeats against Haringey Borough and Great Wakering Rovers.

Last time out in the league, the Mead suffered a 3-2 loss to Witham Town, while also having Ike Feehi sent off in dubious circumstances. A victory for Thamesmead could see them leap above both Great Wakering Rovers and Romford should results go their way - with a potential victory acting as a springboard to further success in the league.

CLUB HISTORY Soham Town Rangers were formed in 1947 as a result of a merger between Soham Rangers and Soham Town. The Julius Martin Lane ground, which at the time was the home of Soham Town, is still the home of the club today, after it was purchased in 1952.

The new club started life in the Cambs League, also running a Reserve team. In 1956, they joined the Peterborough League where they were to remain until 1963. During their time there, they won the league and the league cup on three separate occasions. The club joined the Eastern Counties League in 1963, and remained there until 2008. Soham enjoyed considerable success in the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup during the 1990’s, winning it on three separate occasions, including for the first time in their history in 1991 defeating March Town United, before repeating the feat again in 1998 and 1999 against Wisbech Town and Newmarket Town respectively. The Greens were also the first winners of the Millennium League Cup, when they defeated Diss Town on penalties in the final in 2001. The 2007-08 season was to be

THE OPPOSITION

the clubs most successful season to date winning the Premier Division for the first time, beating nearest challengers Needham Market 4-0 on the final day of the season to clinch the Eastern Counties title in front of 680 spectators at the Lane, and with it promotion to the Southern League for the first time in their history.

progressed to the 1st round of the FA Youth Cup, where they were beaten by Charlton Athletic in front of a crowd of over 500 people at the Lane.

In the first three seasons in the Southern League, Soham recorded finishes of 15th, 11th and 17th. At the end of the 2010-11 season, Ian Benjamin, who had been at the club for six seasons and was in charge of the 2008 title winning side, stepped down from his position as 1st Team Manager.

Soham won the Cambs Invitation Cup for the fifth time in their history in 2014 beating CRC 6-1 at the Abbey Stadium, but were unable to retain the trophy the following season, narrowly losing 2-1 to Cambridge City in the final.

Soham transferred to the Ryman League Division One North for the 2011/12 season with former striker Andrew Furnell returning to take over as Player/Manager. However with the Greens languishing near the foot of the table, Furnell was replaced by former Histon Managers Steve Fallon and Ian Hart in March, with the club finishing the season fourth from bottom. It was a successful campaign for Soham’s other sides though, with the Reserves returning to the Kershaw Premier Division after finishing as runners-up in Cambs Senior A, whilst the Under 18s

The 2012/13 season saw Soham record their highest ever League position, finishing seventh in the Ryman League North Division, five points outside the play-offs.

Soham did finish the season with an accolade though, winning the Ryman League Respect award for the second consecutive year having gone through the season having not collected any dissent points, which saw the club commended in the end of season FA Respect and Fair Play awards. Following a difficult start to the 2015/16 campaign, Steve Fallon stepped down as Manager at the start of October to be replaced by senior players Robbie Nightingale and David Theobald, who eventually guided the Greens to seventeenth position and look to build on that ahead of their first full campaign in charge.

The Academy lads didn’t have a game last week due to it being cup week – sadly we lost to Dartford – so Gary had a chance to get the lads on the training ground and work on our defensive duties as individuals and as a team. He was very pleased with the lad’s efforts and as these notes are being written, the lads are preparing for their home match against Bromley. The lads are growing in confidence all the time and as we have always had good battles with Bromley, it will have been another chance for the lads to see how they are progressing.

running from Long Lane JFC in Kidbrooke, will have just finished. We are all looking forward to seeing how this develops! As a club, we now feel that alongside our academy course here at SCT and our satellite centre at Northfleet Technology College, we are able to attract players from different levels of the game and of varied abilities, offering them the opportunity to choose their chosen academic course and the opportunity of receiving good quality coaching. It allows players the chance to represent Thamesmead Town Football Club and gives the club different angles to be able to produce players for the Under21s and first team. Yours in sport.

THE OPPOSITION COMMUNITY SESSION

Community Session

A BIG HIT! The Mead have launched our new community programme in one of the many ball courts that dominate the estates and the tower blocks that pepper the Thamesmead sky-line. The first session in conjunction with the support of the local Metropolitan Police at Lesnes Abbey and Thamesmead East was held in the Wolvercote Road Ball Court and judging from some of these photos everyone had a

great time - including the local constabulary!!! In charge of the session was Under-21’s boss Gary, and he told us: “It was great night for the youngsters - and I think some of the grown up’s too! Greenie and I have been talking with PC Chris Molnar about setting up sessions like this for a while, and we’re delighted with the response to the first one - the first we hope of many!”

Sadly PC Chris wasn’t able to attend but his colleague - PC John Pruden - was on hand representing our Community colleagues at Lesnes Abbey & Thamesmead East Police, and form some of the photo’s that we’ve seen, enjoyed himself showing some of the youngsters his “ball skills!”

A TRIBUTE TO DANE CHINNERY

A TRIBUTE TO A

SMASHING KID Ten days ago, seven people were killed when a tram they were travelling on in Croydon derailed. Whenever you hear about such event’s there’s always part of you that thanks the lord that you weren’t involved yourself. Sadly for the Mead kit man RICHARD GREEN, this was the tragedy that really hit home, as one of victims was a member of the football “family” that he knew well. And so when Richard asked us if he could include some words in today’s programme, how could we say no… It was late on the Wednesday evening and Richard was at home watching the highlights from the first India v England Test when son Jamie came downstairs at “Green Towers”. We’ll let him take up the story… Jamie said to me: “Dad, what’s ‘Chinn’s’ son’s name?” , “Dane”, I reply. Jamie looked at me with the colour draining from his face. “No!” he said obviously upset. “I’ve just had a call from Allison; he’s dead – killed in the tram crash this morning!” Life just froze in front of me as I just sat staring blankly, shocked and horrified at the screen for what seemed like an age but was probably just a matter of minutes. After he called Allison (who’s also part of the Crystal Palace football “family”), Richard’s worst fears were confirmed – the terrible events from earlier that day had taken the life of someone who, like Richard in the day, followed Palace home and away! Indeed just days before, Richard had pulled out of a trip to Burnley with Dane and others to watch the Mead beat Dereham. “He was only 19 years old; so full of the joys of life and with so much

22

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

to live for!” Richard remembered. Stopping to compose himself, Richard continued: “Dane was one of those lads who could bring a smile to your face just by his presence. Friendly, polite, caring, and always good for a laugh, he was what you would call ‘a smashing kid.’” “Football Families” as we all know can comprise of people from all walks of life and be of all ages – the people who you see once a fortnight, but have the same hope as you; to see your team win! But when tragedy strikes there always seems to be a “special” reaction when the support shown goes beyond the norm, and this has been one of those occasions. Within 72 hours an online collection raised nearly £12,000 to assist the family to fund a suitable farewell and memorial for Dane – truly staggering! As news broke via social media, it became increasingly apparent just how popular and well liked Dane was. Richard told us, “Last weekend there was a huge gathering of family, friends and many from the “Football Community” who came together to show their support, bringing with them floral tributes and mementos to the site of the crash. Footballing

rivalries were forgotten in a truly incredible, heart-warming show of support.” As a mark of respect for Dane and the other victims, there will a minutes silence observed at Selhurst Park this afternoon prior to kick off where Palace face Manchester City, and after 19 minutes (Dane’s age) there’s planned to be a minutes applause around the ground. And so if at just before three twenty this afternoon, a couple of the Mead’s loudest supporters either become withdrawn or start clapping, it’ll be because their thoughts have drifted to a part of South East London where once again, football fans divided by the colour’s they wear, join together and show a level of support to one of our own that only a football fan can truly understand and fully appreciate! Final words rightly are Richard’s – “This so, so, sad tale demonstrates and highlights the warmth and comradeship of those who follow our great game!” RIP DANE CHINNERY – “A SMASHING KID”

THE UNDER-21S

THE

UNDER-21s Good afternoon everyone,

Since my last notes the under21s have only played a couple of away games - and the first one was our first away win of the season when we won 3-0 at Great Wakering. Travelling to Southend on a Thursday night isn’t the easiest thing and so the effort that all of the lads showed and put in that night was terrific. After the first team played at Witham Town last Saturday we repeated the trip on Wednesday night and I’ll have to update you on that game next time as these notes have been written on the way into Essex.

Away from the 21s, I’d just like to thank everyone who has turned up so far to support the Ball Court sessions that we’ve run at the Wolvercote Road Ball Court and in particular to PC Pruden too for his support and “dazzling” ball skills - Greenie told me to put that! Seriously though a massive thank you to everyone, not forgetting our own Richard Butler who was at the launch - really appreciate it mate thank you!
