FA TROPHY FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND SUNDAY 29TH OCTOBER KICK-OFF 2:00PM PRICE : £2.00

ISSUE 13 Welcome
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another Sunday home game in our first season here at Princes Park. And if this afternoon’s game in the Buildbase FA Trophy is as enjoyable and exciting as the other three games that we’ve played on a Sunday, it’ll be an enjoyable afternoon for the neutrals amongst us. Our visitors were last year’s Ryman North Champions and seem to have settled into their new division very well indeed, even if they were, at the time of writing, looking for a new boss. We hope you have had a safe journey to Dartford this afternoon and have a safe return… Anyway, what do we have for you in today’s
edition of The Mead? We celebrate the birthday this week of arguably the greatest player of all time; our player feature today is with one of the Mead’s young guns; there’s Allen’s photos from our home game with Cray last weekend and we catch up with the gaffer and there’s the latest news from the chairman’s office. Our next scheduled home game is here on Saturday 11th November when we’re due to face Guernsey at 3:00pm – but I’m reminded that that game is dependent on the result of the game today! Enjoy the game and safe journey home… Greenie

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN
May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Brightlingsea Regent FC to Princes Park this Sunday afternoon, our club’s new home for the next five years, and after an enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe journey home. May I also welcome all those that have joined us today for this Buildbase FA Trophy match as an independent supporter, joining our old and new fans that join us every week since we moved to Princes Park – a warm welcome to you all, maybe some of you will enjoy the experience and return soon. Well last Saturday we suffered a late defeat by a well-taken opportunist goal against our local rivals Cray. I personally felt that, with the chances we had, we should have put the game to bed by half-time, but like our record this season we have failed to take our chances; something we must rectify if we are to climb up the league and be where we hope we can by the end of the season.

On a damp and wet evening, the team travelled to Hastings, Ian drove me down late afternoon giving us both a chance to have a chat, and enjoy a tin of Red Bull. One thing we both noticed was the change of the scenery whilst we were driving through the villages down to Hastings – so many new-build houses popping up everywhere thankfully there is still plenty of green fields along the route… Anyway, we arrived before the players’ coach! So like one does we made our way to the bar and had a well-earnt pint, the coach arrived around 6-30pm and I then had an opportunity to talk to the first-team manager Tommy, finding out what injuries we had and who was coming back from suspension - overall it seemed we would

have a strong squad available for selection. So relief as I knew from my many journeys down to Hastings when I was chairman & owner at Maidstone United they always put a strong squad out. I was not surprised then when they came flying out of the blocks at the first whistle, but we matched them and, to be honest, had we taken our chances we should have gone in at the break two goals to the good, but in reality, we went in 0-0. The teams came out and in the 48th minute, a badly judged ball by one of our defender’s beat our own keeper and the score remained like this until the 90th minute when Paul Vines drove a thunderbolt into the net making it 1-1 and like most of the independent supporters

were saying was it was well deserved with the chances we had.
went around the Hastings keeper and put the ball in the back of the net!
So well-done Tommy and your management team – you made our Tuesday evening!
I believe our keeper only had to make three saves of significant during all of the match.
You can imaging the feeling of the players and our bench and 20 seconds later the referee blew the full-time whistle, so a well-earned three points and be assured that win at Hastings could be the difference at the end of the season as we still have a game in hand over most of the teams around us.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those Dartford supporters that join us on match day when their team is playing away and taking advantage of our Mead Card initiative, it’s not bad gaining entrance to our matches for £5 and over 65s for only £2-50, remember telling all your friends you can enjoy an afternoon or evening watching TTFC.
Anyway the referee decided there were a further three minutes of injury time to play and, at this time, Hastings, as you would have expected, started playing deeper in their half protecting the draw, but we had other ideas. We started peppering their goal to no avail and, with one minute of injury time left, a move was started on the halfway line and after some good passing our new player, Raphael Duyile, attacked the goal and

I feel greatly for our first-team manager, Tommy! He deserved that win because, just recently, he has not had the rub of the green with results and displays, all made worst together with suspensions and injuries to key players, but there he has been at the head leading by example.
Now let’s enjoy a Sunday afternoon of good football and here’s hoping we are in the next round draw tomorrow lunchtime! Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another Sunday afternoon home game. In fairness and not wanting the kiss of death, Sunday’s have been quite reasonable to us and have been kind in the fact that we haven’t lost any of the three that we’ve played... It does take some getting used to playing on a Sunday, but it’s part of the club’s situation now that we ground-share here at Princes Park. On the plus side, we’re hoping that our gate should be a bit better than it has been with occasional supporters upping the number from a Saturday. So welcome to the floating fans and we hope you enjoy what you see this afternoon and pay us more visits in the future! So welcome to the floating fans and we hope you enjoy what you see this afternoon and pay us more visits in the future! Over the last few weeks, we’ve been in decent form – having said that, last Saturday was disappointing to lose to such a late goal, albeit to a Cray side

who I still believe will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. It was very cruel, but that’s football as we had proved ourselves on the Wednesday before against Herne Bay and of course last Tuesday at Hastings. This year we’ve played all games to the wire no matter what and we’ve cashed in with some late goals ourselves. So, if you’re thinking of leaving five minutes early today or in future, I suggest you don’t or you might miss something! If you had done that at Hastings on Tuesday, you would have missed not only us equalise, but also the winning goal. We’d given away another really poor goal defensively in yet another game in which we could have been three or four in already! Fair play to the boys though as they showed great grit and determination as they got the goals we deserved, and the points
THAMESMEAD TOWN V BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT
followed us home. One reason for this is our fitness levels which are so much better than last years which is nice to see especially on a skeleton squad for the last two weeks in particular. I cannot fault the lads throughout any of the games – I’ve been frustrated as I said that we’ve given poor goals away and not taken our chances, but Tuesday night, for me, at Hastings was a massive game because without those three points there would have been a little gap going into this Trophy weekend between what I call the pack – which is where we want to be with a game in hand! We’ve played some good teams lately – the Hornchurch’s and the Cray’s – so when you remember that going into these games our bench has consisted of two academy boys and Max our reserve goalie, its shown how well we’ve done. It’s not been the prettiest of football or the most structured you’ll ever see, but I’ll accept that
> THE MANAGER
when I’m signing players to come in – some for just one game – to boost our squad just a little bit in case of injury or suspension. One good thing to come out of Tuesday was a full bench for the first time in a while – I can’t honestly remember the last time that was – and on that note, we introduced Raphael Duyile to the club. I spoke to him firstly at the end of last season and his number was passed onto us again in the last week. He’d played at a higher level and wasn’t getting a look in and I’m hoping his stay with us will be long and successful. And let’s face it he couldn’t have had a better start – being introduced to the boys and then coming off the bench to score the winner on Tuesday! I am still speaking to players as we’re writing these notes and we need to strengthen the squad up. As I always say to the boys “its football, it’s nothing personal!” and my job is to do what’s best to win games of football. The lads have an ideal opportunity to stake their claims for their shirts every week, but it doesn’t help me or the team when there’s no competition to go on from the bench and improve what’s already on there. And finally, we’re getting that back again. We trained Thursday as a warm down and got through things before today as it’s a long time not to have seen the boys since Tuesday and we re-iterated again
WWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG
that there might be hollowing in the changing rooms, but most of it is in my eyes positive rants as there’s still so much more to come from this group. I still think that we’ve only hit seventy percent so far, but at the same time I have to keep reminding myself and everyone around me just how much has been put on these boys in the last few weeks. We won’t stop demanding the highest possible levels from a squad who are a great bunch of
lads – I know that there is a load more ability still in there and that’s my job to get it out of them. I can’t fault the last six or seven games and that for me speaks volumes. We’re all in it together so enjoy today and see you all in the bar after the game, and hopefully if today is your first Mead game, please come again! Thanks for all your support. Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Brightlingsea Regent in the FA Trophy. Back on another cup trail, I’m just glad to be back involved after the frustration of our defeat to Cray Wanderers last week and having to watch from the stand!
especially as Cray’s winner had come so late after what had been a decent performance against a side who I know the gaffer thinks will be there or there abouts at the end of the season.
so late! But what a massive buzz its given all the boys with the goals from Vinesy and Raph – now we’ve just got to take that buzz into today and another important cup tie for the club.
After all that it was a long midweek game for us all down to Hastings on Tuesday.
Despite going a goal down on Tuesday, we were never fazed as we had created chances before the goal and we knew we’d keep creating chances – just wish we hadn’t left it quite
Thanks as ever for your support,

THE Academy Good luck to Tom and the boys and here’s hoping we will be in the draw for the next round come Monday morning... We all know the sayings “it’s a funny old game!” or “it’s a game of mixed emotions! “ and last Saturday was the latter, as our first team lost 0-1 to Cray Wanderers. Academy player Dante McIntosh made his debut coming off the bench in the very late stages of the game. We all know the result is the most important outcome at firstteam level, that’s a given and due to injuries and suspensions, Tom was forced to draft in two of our academy boys into the squad as he had done against Hornchurch and Herne Bay, but from a club perspective it was great to see one of our own stepping on to the turf. Tom has seen these lads in training and like me, feels that in time these boys could make the massive step up to first-team level. They must continue to

work extremely hard in training, lose their schoolboy mistakes and step up and become well rounded young professionals. Under Steve Quashie; the Gaffer; OB; and myself, I’m sure these lads can make that transition if they listen and learn! They must continue to work extremely hard in training, lose their schoolboy mistakes and step up and become well rounded young professionals. Under Steve Quashie; the Gaffer; OB; and myself, I’m sure these lads can make that transition if they listen and learn! Our lads didn’t have a game this week due to half term, so it has been a chance to work hard once again on the training ground, allowing the lads to improve on all aspects of their game. Their drive? CLUB HISTORY
thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.
In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

A GREAT OF THE GAME <
A great of the game - Pele Today we pay tribute to a man who incredibly hit the World footballing stage sixty years ago next summer when an 17 year old Brazilian “arrived” on the World stage starting a real football phenomenon which will probably last forever, and who last week celebrated his 77th birthday. He’s known by a single four-letter word – some call him “King” – to the rest of us he is simply PELE… You wonder why some people “change” their names, but in Pele’s case, every football fan in the World is relieved that he falls into that category! Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento he is widely regarded as the greatest football player of all time. He is the most successful league goal-scorer in the world, scoring

1281 goals in 1363 games, and in his playing days, he was for a period the best-paid athlete in the world. He began his began playing club football at age 15 and made his international debut at 16. He is the only player to play in four successive Finals – three of which the Brazilians won – 1958 in Sweden when a 17-year-old Pele was the undoubted star through to 1962 in Chile and then onto 1970 when he was part of arguably the greatest team of all time as the Brazilians won the third of their five titles. He is Brazil’s all-time top international goal scorer with seventy-seven goals in 92 games, although ironically here in England he’s perhaps best known for two misses and an amazing assist in the 1970 Finals. His outrageous dummy of the

Czech goal-keeper and then missing the open goal proves that even genius’ are human; there’s THAT save from Pele’s header by Gordon Banks; and the final assist on the Carlos Alberto’s fourth goal in the Final really is the stuff of legends. And all this it must to be remembered before the internet and 24 hour a day television let alone 24 hour dedicated Sports Channel. But some have argued that is why there has always been such an aura surrounding the player as football fans only saw him every four years in World Cups rather than seeing him play club football each weekend as we see today with players such as Ronaldo and Messi. Another “problem” was that the Finals in which he really starred were held in Central and South America after his debut Finals in 1958 in Sweden, whilst brutal Portuguese tackling at Goodison Park ended a

half fit Pele’s involved in England 66. But whatever your point of view there’s little doubt that since he retired forty years ago, he has been a worldwide ambassador for football and has made many acting and commercial ventures. In 2010, he was named the Honorary President of the New York Cosmos where he ended his playing career. Pelé has also been known for connecting the phrase “The Beautiful Game” with football. In Brazil, he is hailed as a national hero for his accomplishments in football and for his outspoken support of policies that improve the social conditions of the poor. Throughout his career and in his retirement, Pelé received several individual and team awards for his performance in the field, his recordbreaking achievements, and legacy in the sport. Was he a better player than Messi? Ronaldo? Maradona? Noone will ever know properly, but why not ask if those three and other greats are better than Pele?
His influence on the world game is undeniable – he was the catalyst to turn something normal into a “Beautiful game” – a baton that others have taken on to other levels,
but without Pele, we think you’ll agree that those other named greats wouldn’t have been able to take the game to the heights they have… Whatever your opinion, HAPPY BIRTHDAY PELEI!

HASTINGS UNITED Cruttwell (49)
Tuesday 24th October Pilot Field Attendance: 279 Bostik League South
2 THAMESMEAD TOWN Vines (90), Duyile (90+1)
For the third time in seven days, a Mead contest has been decided at the death - but this time it was even later than before. Following the dramatic win over Herne Bay last Wednesday and the heart-breaking defeat to Cray Wanderers at the weekend Tuesday night at Pilot Field saw the Mead claim three points but scoring twice in stoppage time to claim the points, which seemed unlikely but in the final analysis were fully deserved. Behind when a defensive mistake allowed Hastings to take a 48th minute lead, the Mead finally found a way through the home defense as the clock ticked to ninety minutes when Paul Vines drilled home a fierce shot in off the left post, and there was still time for debutant substitute Raphael Duyile to combine with fellow replacement Tobi Ajala to coolly round the keeper to win the game, and spark a bench clearance which showed just how important these three points were to the squad. Pilot Field is an old-fashioned ground with what surely must be one of the biggest playing areas in the division and the Mead took full advantage to play some good possession football yet frustratingly seldom threatened home keeper Horlock. The Mead weren’t helped in the early stages when Richard Avery was forced off with a leg
injury - fortunately, the gaffer was able to bring Leon Smith into the action after completing his recent suspension. Alex Teniola went close early on shooting wide, before Vinesy fired past the post from a good position and when Horlock made a stunning double save to keep out Laurent Mendy’s header, you feared that it might not be the Mead’s night, especially as the visitors were indebted to Lewis Carey at the other end as the stopper made great saves from Pogue and Cruttwell before the break. Three minutes into the second half, Hastings took advantage of a poor clearance to take the lead. Leon beat Cruttwell to the ball, but sliced his clearance high into the air, and with the wind swirling all over the place, Jake McIntyre didn’t make clean contact in nodding the ball back to Carey allowing Cruttwell to nip in and score. The goal knocked the stuffing out of the Mead for a while, but full credit to the boys for the way they responded and kept plugging away. Bode Anidugbe and Tom O’Connor formed a great partnership in central midfield and provided a great engine-room for the Mead - one which allowed the visitors to take a foot-hold in the game. There were had loud penalty
appeals which were waved away after Joe Denny was flattened after a charging forward run before Horlock made a second amazing block to deny the luckless Laurent - the keeper performed heroics to keep his side in front with an amazing point blank stop! At the other end only Lovatt will know how he missed with a free header from Rodari’s corner but the miss was to be crucial as in the final seconds of normal time, Jake partially redeemed himself by flighting a great ball into the Hastings box which Laurent was able to somehow divert into Vinesy’s path, and the Mead number nine did the rest thundering in a shot which flew in off the left post! Incredibly Hastings had the chances to win the game as Rodari’s great run saw him drill in a shot that flew just past the post, before the Mead won the game. Tobi Ajala who had just replaced Harvey Brand - who had had another fine game at full back - just before the equaliser fed a brilliant ball into Raph, and the debutant (who himself had replaced Alex earlier) rounded Horlock brilliantly to win the game and spark that bench clearance. Undoubtedly this was three points won the hard way, but whichever way you look at this win on the Sussex coast, the message must be clear - leave a Mead game early at your peril! by Mike Green

Its been a turbulent few weeks at North Road and the Regent faithful who have crossed the Bridge today will be looking for their heroes to cheer the spirits.

BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT
Recent CLUB HISTORY 2017/2018 will see Brightlingsea Regent FC embark upon their first season at step three football in the Bostik Premier Division. After a nine year absence this will be their seventh season back at step 6 or above in the football pyramid after dropping out of the league in 2001/2002 having completed 10 years within the Eastern Counties league. Brightlingsea Regent, previously Brightlingsea United, have completed around 100 years of competitive football. Firstly in the Border league, between 1908/1909 to 1970 when they joined The Essex Senior league for 20 years having much success, before going on to join the then Jewson League in 1990 and then back to the Border league in 2001/2002. Brightlingsea United FC and Regent Park Rangers FC amalgamated at the start of 2005/06 season to become Brightlingsea Regent Football Club.
During this time the squad and club have continued to grow and develop, having success in the Border league Division 1 and cup. In 2009/2010 new Management team James Webster and Mark Gridley guided Regent to a 4th place finish and followed up the following season in 2010/2011 by winning the Kent Blaxill Premier border league in a superb season by playing 34, winning 31, drawing 2 and losing just 1 game. In season 2011-12, James Webster added Tom Rothery to the Management team in September and they finished their first season back at step 6 with a creditable 5th place finish. They also reached the quarter-final of the Essex Senior Cup before losing to League 2 side Dagenham & Redbridge. The 2012-13 season was successful for many reasons. Firstly a FA Vase cup run, which was the longest in the clubs history before bowing out in round 3 (last 64).
The club gained promotion back to step 5 and the Premier Division with a third place finish which included a 22 game unbeaten run during the season. In the final game of the season the team won the First Division KO Cup final with a 1-0 victory over Gt Yarmouth. The 2013-14 season in the Eastern Counties Premier Division again proved to be successful for Brightlingsea; gaining promotion after finishing Runners-up to Hadleigh Utd, losing out on the final day by goal difference. The club also reached the last 16 of the FA Vase and in doing so again created history. The 2016-17 season saw Brightlingsea Regent crowned as champions of the Isthmian North Division, notching up an impressive 103 points and finishing 12 points ahead of their closest rivals, Maldon & Tiptree FC, ensuring an historic promotion to the Bostik Premier League.

FEATURE INTERVIEW:
HARVEY BRAND
In the latest of our player features, we turn the spotlight on a member of the Mead’s defence who seems to have been a part of the club for some time now – yet is still only 18 and in his first full season. Greenie’s been talking with HARVEY BRAND…
PAGE 26
THAMESMEAD TOWN V BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT
> PLAYER INTERVIEW
Harvey started by telling us how he joined the Mead – he told us: “The club was in a difficult situation when I joined The Mead back in late November last year, being in the relegation zone of Ryman North. “For an 18-year-old, it was quite daunting to be thrown straight into that situation in my first year in senior football, however, I quickly realised that we shouldn’t have been in that position with the boys we had in the changing room. “The togetherness of the team last year, both on and off the pitch was fantastic and I think it’s great that the gaffer has managed to retain most of last year’s squad for this campaign. “From a current playing perspective, I think the Bostik South is more of a technical league with more “football” being played and that suits as. However, coming from the North league, we can also have a physical battle if needed and I think this stands us in good stead for the rest of the season.” An interesting answer – so we explored a bit more and asked how tough it’s been having so many injuries and suspensions this season and the effects on a relatively small squad. Harvey told us: “of course it has been tough for us as players physically, especially only having one or two fit players on the bench in some cases. You just need to get on with it and give 110% if you are playing. “It’s much tougher being injured, than it is playing two games a week, so I count myself lucky that I’ve already managed to play 20 games this season in such a small space of time. The beauty of playing twice a week is that you don’t have time to deliberate on a loss, or get carried away with a
WWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG
win. Before you know it, it’s time to focus on getting 3 points in the next fixture.” The move from Sporting Club Thamesmead to Princes Park has been welcomed by most people; we asked Harvey how he felt: “Being fortunate enough to have the finest facilities at this level of football, is brilliant for everyone at the club,” he said. “Performance wise, we’ve played some of our best football and gained some of our best results so far this season at Princes Park. The 3-0 and 5-0 wins at home to Lewes and Horsham respectively, stand out, but on the other hand, we know that teams will raise their game when playing us at home, as its likely to be the best ground they’ll play at all year, hence we need to ensure that we are always prepared for this. “The first game at home to Billericay was a great occasion and holding a team with such phenomenal players to a draw was a great achievement, although we had the better chances to win the game and ultimately ended up rueing our missed opportunities after the replay. “Additionally, the replay against Hornchurch was a wonderful defensive display away from home; a real team performance with everyone willing to put their bodies on the line. Other than that, the previously mentioned home win over Lewes was an extremely satisfying performance and a convincing result.” So just how did you get into the game we wondered: “My Grandad is to thank for getting me into football,” Harvey explained. “He would spend all of his spare time taking me to the park or teaching me new skills in the back garden, as well as taking me
to Chelsea games, the team he supported for 70 years. “Eventually, I joined a local team with some boys from my primary school for a bit of fun. I remember one game we won 110, I scored 10 and still came off the pitch fuming that the manager would let me take the penalty to make it 11-0. “After that, my parents decided I should take football a bit more seriously. Until last year, I had been at Welling United for 11 years, working my way through youth levels to eventually make a few first team appearances which I’m proud of. “The support of my parents, as well as my brother and sister who are always there, means the world to me. Although they are without a doubt my biggest critics as soon as I step through the front door, they’re also my biggest fans whilst I’m on the pitch. “Seeing them in the stand always makes you want to give extra effort. They’ve watched almost every game since I started playing, so hopefully they’ll continue to come and support for years to come.” Smiling he added, “You best keep that cheap family season ticket running next year! “This is my first full season in senior football so no trophies as of yet, but promotion this year would be a great start and that is what the boys and myself are fully focussed on. I didn’t expect to have already been on the same pitch as FA cup and Champions League finalists at such a young age. Even re-reading that last sentence feels surreal. “You always want to test yourself against the very best and I know that I’ve gained valuable experience from having played against such players!”

CRAIG’S CORNER <
CRAIG GIBSON THE coach
Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes! Here we are again back on a Sunday for our muchanticipated FA Trophy clash with last season’s North champions Brightlingsea Regent. Today, I’ve been asked to give you an insight in to a typical night in the life of non-league football and so here is a quick look at our evening in Hastings! The day starts as normal, our jobs, and the day must be planned in order we can get away from our work early. For this trip, a massive thanks to the chairman that we are travelling by coach which departs from Princess Park at 4.30.
PAGE 28
For me I leave home at 3.30 to be sure I can make the notorious crossing over the QE2 bridge and be on time, thankfully for once no delay coming over, well apart from a quick stop at the passport control to show my travel visa allowing me to get into Kent! The coach departed at 4.30 and it took us thirty-five minutes to get on to the M25 due to the local traffic and eventually on our way. Not the best of starts to the journey. The journey to Hastings was thereafter uneventful, that is until we arrived in Hastings, first, blaming the Sat Nav the driver took a wrong turn as we all looked
THAMESMEAD TOWN V BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT
on in bewilderment – it was such an obvious wrong turn - then at the ground, trying to park took nearly as long as the journey down! Now for those who don’t know, Hastings’ ground is at the bottom of the steepest hill you’ll ever see to such an extent that the coach was SCREAMING “change gear, change gear” to no avail – queue a fit of schoolboy giggles from all aboard. In the end the Gaffer finally took control and told the driver to “STOP” here and let everybody out before the game was postponed due to our non-arrival, then park where he wanted, or words to that effect LOL!
> CRAIG’S CORNER
With the points won, the trip home began about 11pm. The signs were not good when coming out of Hastings the driver again took a wrong turning – Aaaaargh! Still once on our way we all thought to be back in good time, wouldn’t we? How wrong we were! The A21 was closed for road works resulting in a large detour via some very dark country lanes – oh how I longed for the City! So, we eventually arrived back in civilisation at Princess Park around midnight. This was not before a very long and informative lecture given by the driver regarding the electrics and various other aspects of the coach after a simple oneline question by the Gaffer (he was only being polite for a change!) This resulted in a final fit of giggles as everybody watched the Gaffer getting more & more bored & agitated at the end of a very long night. Still it was worth it since we had the three points with us! Like most I arrived home just before 1am eventually hitting the pillow at 2am, back up at 6am for work. Then got the SACK for falling asleep at my desk! Sorry that was just a dream!!! Glamorous? NO! But we all love the game so until next time when we will do it all again… Enjoy the game today and let us hope we’ll be in tomorrow’s draw! Enjoy the game today. Craig Gibson First-team Coach
