AFC FYLDE

North Ferriby United climbed upto fourth in the table after their convincing 3-0 win over Curzon Ashton last weekend but face a different test when AFC Fylde come to town. The Coasters are sitting in second place in the National League North, but with two games in hand over Nuneaton Town at the summit there is every chance the club could jump to top spot over the coming weeks. On paper both teams have been performing consistently well, hence their lofty positions, but for Ferriby a win this afternoon will cement their Play-off credentials. A win for the Villagers could see them leapfrog both Fylde and Solihull Moors - however the latter would be dependant on their game against Gloucester City. Fylde have had a slight slump in form from their high standards being knocked out of the FA Cup and the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy to Millwall and Ashton Athletic respectively. Last time out in the league they drew 2-2 with Brackley Town after goals from Danny Rowe and Dion Charles saw the club settle for a point.

AFC Fylde

CLUB HISTORY The club was formed by the amalgamation of Kirkham Town FC and Wesham FC in 1988.

By taking this name, the club was adopting the name of a previous club which had played in the West Lancashire League in the years immediately before the First World War. Kirkham & Wesham played their first season in the West Lancashire League in 1988–89, taking the place previously held by Kirkham Town in Division One. The following season they finished bottom of this division and were relegated to Division Two. After three seasons in

Division Two they were promoted in the 1992–93 season, only to again suffer relegation in 1994–95. They were immediately promoted again, finishing as runners-up and only losing two games all season in 1995–96. The West Lancashire League was re-structured with the First Division being renamed as the Premier Division in the 1998–99 season. After finishing fourth in successive season in the 1997–98 and 1998–99 seasons, the club then dominated the Premier Division for a number of years. They were Champions in seven out of eight seasons between the 1999–2000 and 2006–07 seasons, finishing as runners-up

in the one season they failed to win the league, 2002–03. Between January 2003 and October 2004, the club did not lose one match in any competition, a record that spanned 21 months. The run finally ended when they lost a league match, 1–0 to Dalton United. For the start of the 2008–09 season, the club changed their name from Kirkham & Wesham to A.F.C. Fylde. Long serving manager Mick Fuller was moved upstairs in September 2010 and Kelham O’Hanlon was brought in as first team coach. The club finished in mid-table with a high turnover of playing staff and the side at the end of their first season in the Northern Premier League Division One North was barely recognisable compared with the one that started the campaign. The following season the club achieved a play-off place. In the semi-final Matt Walwyn scored in a 1–0 win over Skelmersdale United but the team lost 2–1 to Chorley in the final. In the 2011–12 season they were

installed as early promotion favourites but Kelham O’Hanlon was replaced as manager in November 2011 after a poor run of results and was quickly replaced by a new management team of Dave Challinor and Colin Woodthorpe. They left Conference North side Colwyn Bay to drop two divisions to join the Coasters. They were 16 points off the top of the table when they came to the club but claimed the title with a 1–0 win over Salford City. Challinor won several awards including Manager of the Year at the NPL Awards Dinner. In 2012–13, the club managed to achieve a playoff position in their maiden season in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. They lost out 3–1 on penalties to eventual playoff final winners Hednesford Town F.C. in the semi-final, which ended 3–3 after extra time at Keys Park, Hednesford. The game was notable for a 60-yard goal scored from a free-kick by Coasters goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe.

They beat Chorley F.C. 4–1 at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton to win the Lancs FA Trophy, Skelmersdale United 1–0 at Edgeley Park, Stockport to win the NPL Challenge Cup, Worksop Town 3–1 at home in the playoff semifinal, and then required penalties to beat Ashton United at home in the playoff final, with the game finishing 1–1 after extra time. Goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe scored the deciding penalty to end a tense game and send the Coasters up to the Conference North. The Coasters signed Tom Hannigan, Liam Tomsett & Danny Rowe in preparation for their first season in the Conference North and defender Josh Langley stayed on at the club after joining late the previous season. AFC Fylde finished their first season in the Conference North in second place with 85 points, losing to Guiseley in the subsequent play-off semi-final. Their top scorer was Danny Rowe with 31 goals, with Richie Allen and Danny Lloyd both scoring at least 20 goals in all competi-

tions. Josh Langley won both Player’s Player of the Year award and Supporters Player of the Year award, while Dion Charles took Young Achiever of the Year award. Tom Hannigan took Manager’s Player of the Year in what was widely regarded as a successful season for the club, having only been promoted to this division the previous season. Three AFC Fylde players were selected in the Conference North Team of the Season at end of season AGM awards. Ben Hinchcliffe, Josh Langley and Brad Barnes were all picked by the fellow clubs within the league. Long serving players Joe Booth and Michael Barnes moved on before pre-season started along with Michael Potts, Luke Denson and Dave Hankin also leaving the club. Dom Collins came in from Southport, while Matty Hughes joined from local neighbours Fleetwood Town in pre-season. Left-back Alex Whittle joined as defensive cover in midSeptember, whilst Akil Wright signed on loan from Fleetwood a week later. James Hardy came in from Manchester City at the start of October as The Coasters strengthened their squad further.

MATCH REPORT 1 1

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Jarman (56)

AFC FYLDE Tomsett (53)

November 15, 2014 | Conference North | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Att: 429 This was one of Ferriby’s best performances for some time. The whole side played consistently well throughout the game and, with a little more luck, could have taken all three points against second-placed Fylde.

An entertaining first-half saw few direct attempts on goal. Defences were largely on top throughout the half. Fylde were forced to play back a lot due to Ferriby’s pressure up-front and in midfield. Ferriby looked the more threatening but Fylde looked dangerous on the break. Nathan Jarman and Liam King both went close for Ferriby in the first 15 minutes. Jason St Juste then brought a double save from Fylde keeper Ben Hinchliffe. However, it was Fylde who almost took the lead with their only serious threat of the half after 39 minutes. Bradley Barnes’ header from a Richie Allen cross was cleared off the line by Jon D’Laryea. Jamie Yates saw Hinchliffe take a cross under pressure from Tom Denton then Jarman was crowdedout by Fylde’s defenders as he tried to create space

for a shot. Ferriby opened the second-half with Hinchliffe grabbing St Juste’s cross just ahead of the inrushing Denton. However, but it was Fylde who took the lead after 53 minutes. Ferriby keeper Adam Nicklin dropped Richie Allen’s header allowing Liam Tomsett to prod home from close-range. Ferriby responded well. Ferriby were denied what appeared to be a clear penalty when Josh Langley grappled with Tom Denton in the area. Yates and Jarman then had shots blocked. The equaliser came in the 56th when a Jamie Yates’ free-kick was met by Jarman who headed firmly home. Ferriby were the more threatening side as the half-progressed. Hinchliffe finger-tipped a King shot on to the bar and then held a curling shot from Yates. Michael Barnes had an opportunity for Fylde but he shot straight at Nicklin. With both sides looking for a winner, King curled a shot just over the bar for Ferriby whilst Allen saw a shot deflected for a corner for Fylde.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S

Sam Shepherd discusses the Boston thriller and how football united in the wake of the French terrorism attacks... My last column was a bit doom and gloom after our defeats to Stalybridge and Nuneaton but as they have done so often since taking charge Billy and Bobby have weathered the storm and our season is now well and truly back on track. Our last game here at the Eon Visual Media stadium was an absolute cracker against Lincolnshire rivals Boston United. With the teams at the top threatening to pull away it was vital to get the three points and thankfully we found a way to win. Boston went 1-0 up and Ferriby were looking poor but the goal gave them a wake-up call and they played much better football for the rest of the match. Ferriby were the better side but still found themselves 2-1 down however they equalised almost instantly and didn’t look back. Goals from Tom Denton and Mark Gray gave

us a commanding 4-2 lead but this was not the end of the story. Adam Nicklin went off injured and soon after Boston scored to set up a nervy last ten minutes but Ferriby’s defence stood firm for a vital win. I will review our wins at Alfreton and Curzon Ashton in my next column because I would like to use this one to talk about the events at Wembley on Tuesday night. It was fantastic to see two great footballing nations unite and stand up against terrorism. After the horrific events of a few days earlier, France would have been well within their rights to cancel the game but to their credit they decided to let the match go ahead. The scenes before kick-off were emotional to say the least. The French National anthem was sung by French and English fans alike, a French Flag was made in the air by the England Supporters, Wembley’s famous arch North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

resembled the French Tricolore and the rival players stood side by side in the centre circle for a minute’s silence. It was clear the FA had made every effort to show solidarity with their French counterparts. It was great to see such unity between two great rivals in such difficult circumstances. Looking ahead to today’s game and its one I am very excited about, 2nd vs 4th in the National League North with Ferriby needing to win to keep pace with Fylde who have played two games less than us. It’s sure to be a tough and competitive game and I am backing us to nick the three points which would be a massive boost ahead of the visit of the league leaders Nuneaton on Tuesday. Enjoy the game, Sam
