14 - THE OPPOSITION 19 - CLUB STATS 20 - FIXTURES & RESULTS Good evening everyone, Even on a cold night at the end of November, there’s nothing like football under the lights in my book... And so what do we have for you tonight? OB takes over the managerial column and is forthright in his views from the weekends defeat against Soham; we have a centre pages feature on the work that Gary and the boys are doing in our local
schools who are members of our Passport Scheme and there’s get well wishes to one of the club’s unluckiest players in Mead Matters... And don’t forget, the Christmas / New Year draw tickets go on sale for the first time tonight - yes “the Big Day” is now just 33 days away! Cheers Greenie

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Paul
BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of AFC Hornchurch FC, on this cold November Tuesday evening, and after some hospitality and hopefully an enjoyable game they all have a safe return journey home. May I also personally, once again, take this opportunity to welcome all those local resident’s that have decided to join us as new supporters through our season ticket initiative this season. I know that the benefit of the £30.00 season ticket for four has made a lot of difference to the families that are involved at this time with this initiative, and I hope during the next few weeks we have more families join us and become new supporters. Also may I thank all the schools that have joined the Passport Scheme that allows all persons under the age of 14 to come to a match free of charge as long as they are accompanied by an elder who is only charged the concession price. And finally also all the schools
04
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
that have arranged to visit the club during the season, the club allow them in free as we feel that the children may go home and tell their parents how much they enjoyed the experience, but whatever scheme you are involved in you are very welcome to SCT as the club’s guest. I must take a moment at this time to thank Mike Green for all the hard work he has given to the club, and he must be proud to see the fruition of all the hard work with seeing the children from all of the schools attending the matches. I must say I really enjoyed answering the question and answers session that I got involved with. The young children were superb and it was great to see their smiling faces, you never know there could be a future TTFC player amongst them. I have only recently advised our Landlords the Peabody Trust that we will not be playing here at SCT after the end of this season. Be assured this has not been an easy decision to make, and I am sure there will be many that feel that I
have let the club down by taking them away from Bayliss Avenue their home for many years. But had I not taken this decision the club was dead on its feet. I personally feel the current problems that we are suffering from at this time should have been formally dealt with long before I joined the club and before the club moved into the new facilities. I am sure the previous directors and committee members never thought when they agreed to give up their secure 27-years lease to move into the SCT as a tenant, that they would ever see the level of financial increases or the charges made to the Club for the services we use here at the SCT by our Landlords, together with the withdrawal of many benefits that the club were initially given. But in all reality my decision was purely based on the unacceptable financial impact of the yearly increases in charges made by our landlords for the club using these facilities both on match day and
CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
training. Since the club moved into this fantastic facility, which has made continuing playing from SCT a non-viable financial option, and I could not allow the continued increases of charges to continue without some positive action by myself. Because in reality without my continued financial input there would be no club. You do not need to be an accountant to work out that with our small crowds of loyal supporters that turn up at all of our home matches the money taken from the gate does not cover the operational costs of running a semi-professional club, some matches it does not cover the match day official costs and as I am the main financial backer to this club I have to look clearly at how we can make plans to be able to operate the club in a different financial environment and hopefully a new home. I fully accept that our Landlords have a business to run and these days the balance sheet should not show a loss, but I personally feel that in reality we have lived in a dream since I started funding the football club back there in 2012. Well I have woken from that dream and hopefully I am taking the most appropriate action to ensure the club continues to operate albeit from another home. I am at this time discussing many options with a number of third parties, but at this time I have not agreed formally to any move, but as the league require confirmation of any ground share in place by the end of the
year I will have to decide within the next few weeks whether we have found a club that can offer the required facilities at an acceptable cost to run the football club viably. You have all read within my programme notes in the past my personal commitment to each and every-one of you, the supporters of our great club, that we are first and foremost here for the community of Thamesmead and that will continue to be the case wherever we find our first team playing in season 2017/2018. To this end I have agreed a joint partnership with the CEO of the Long Lane Junior Football Club at Kidbrooke, Mick Northwood that will allow the first-team and the Under-21s to use their training facilities for the foreseeable future. We will also run all of our community work from this base and hopefully if we can agree a forward plan and can once again have many strong youth development squads in operation so that there is a pathway to the first-team with home grown players something that I feel is a must at this level of football. Our coaches will still work with the local Police and our friends in the local schools, nothing will change within this quarter it’s just a shame that we cannot continue to play our home matches at our Bayliss Avenue home that the club has played at for such a long time, but as I have explained we could not to continue to live beyond our means, I am genuinely sorry for having to make these decisions but hopefully in time it will be seen as the right
decision. Finally, I would like to sincerely thank Mick Hayes and his team previously of Trust Thamesmead now amalgamated within the Peabody Group, who I would also thank Peabody for their support with regard to their assistance sponsoring the academy last year. I fully appreciate that they have a facility they need to run it as a business, it’s just a shame that all the initial beliefs and understandings that were agreed between parties before the club moved into the SCT are no longer in place resulting in my decision to find a new home before the club died. We as a club will continue to ensure our position within the Ryman North League this season, I will continue to support the firstteam manager in this quest and be assured Tommy is being involved with all discussions whilst finding the proper club that we can ground share with that will allow the club to grow. Once again I apologise to one and all for having to make this difficult decision but be assured had I not there would not be a football club, and that is something that I could not allow to happen. Now let’s get behind the boys and I shall keep you updated whenever the need. Enjoy the match! Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

ASSISTANT’S NOTES
Alex
O’BRIEN Hello everyone – home midweek football is back at Bayliss Avenue as we welcome the players, supporters and the officials from AFC Hornchurch this Tuesday evening. Yet again to have another manager come up to us after a game saying we deserved more from it when we’ve battled and outplayed opposition dominating the game really doesn’t matter or help. And yes it happened again on Saturday, and was of little
comfort to any of us! Its goals that win games and we didn’t score enough at the weekend! It’s annoying as the boys worked hard as they played in the right areas; they played for each other which was good and I felt really sorry for them because I thought that we, as a club, deserved more! We had some new face’s on Saturday – all of whom I think did OK when they were involved. Connor’s a centre forward who’s been around a bit and is first to admit that he’s a bit over-weight at the minute, but what he does
is involve people; he’s very good with the ball at his feet and he will score goals. We just have to get him sharper; a little bit match fit and hopefully he’ll do that. Little Michael came on towards the end and is quick – really, really quick! He’s another one from Barkingside, and when the ball’s at his feet, he’s frighteningly quick and when he’s running into space it’s the same. Some of the things he’s done in training have made me think that I wouldn’t have fancies marking him I tell you.
“When the ball’s at his feet, he’s frighteningly quick and when he’s running into space the same” 06

ASSISTANT’S NOTES
And not forgetting Merrick who replaced Kinchy for the last half hour on Saturday and I thought did a job for us – big and powerful – and hopefully we’ll be able to see how good he really could be for us. We know what’s coming from Hornchurch – what to expect – and I’m sure that the feeling is mutual. They probably know us inside out the same way that we know them it’ll be a “Cup Final” tonight, they’ll be something going on – there always is; there’s always drama and there’s always goals!
I don’t think that I’ve ever been involved in a game with Hornchuch that has finished nil-nil – so that’s it the mockers on tonight! But seriously we’ve got to stamp our mark on the game tonight like we did particularly in the first half on Saturday and make sure that tonight we take our chances. We might be awful but nick a one-nil win and we’ll take that make no mistake we’ll take it. Saturday yet again proved that we’re part of a strange old League. I’m more of a worrier than the
gaffer is – I look at the League table and I don’t like gaps – every point in vital but you can’t tell me that a side at the bottom of the table can’t go and beat one of the top sides in the League – they do and it has happened so that’s got to be a positive for us to take forward starting tonight! See you in the Mead bar after the game. Cheers Alex O’Brien First-Team Assistant Manager

THE OPPOSITION COMMUNITY SESSION
THAMESMEAD TOWN IN
THE COMMUNITY Thursday 3rd November 2016 – a normal day to most people, but for TTFC it marked the start of a major step forward. This is the story of the day… It was the day that we started to live the dream of club chairman Paul Bowden- Brown and took the club into the Community of Thamesmead, and the day that the Community of Thamesmead welcomed us with the arms of the young – well Year Six pupils anyway! The Passport Scheme already had four schools signed up and the first to take up the coaching option was Bishop John Robinson Primary School, and this was to be the day that Gary and his team started at the school. For the
children of Year Six, their weekly Games session was going to change… After discussions with Mr Maslin (the Head-teacher) and then the head of PE – Clare Seccombe – the Club has arranged to go into school on a
12

Thursday afternoon to assist with their lesson – and it’s a decision that all sides totally enjoyed and from the feedback we’ve received the job that Gary, Jermaine, Jamie and Martin have done thus far is nothing short of tremendous – all the children and coaches involved enjoyed their first experience of the project Claire told us, “Gary and the coaches were amazing with the children during the first session, and I’m glad to say if it’s possible it’s getting better and better every week. They come well equipped; the children are very excited for this experience and showed progression throughout the lesson. All the coaches are always very polite, kind and attentive towards the children – each child is constantly involved during every moment.” “The input from experienced coaches helps the children to grasp the aspect of sport in a better way as well as helping massively with their learning – and that’s before we even bring into the equation the sport side of things. Also at this age to get the majority of girls interested in PE is difficult, but as you have seen today the enthusiasm has been very noticeable and they
have all enjoyed themselves very much. We have been trying to promote the Club in the school for the last year and now that the children have seen Gary and the boys, I hope the children start to appreciate they have a club right on their doorstep.” “Everyone looks forward so much to every session. Thank you so much!” We’d like to thank to thank Clare for the words – and the photos! Reflecting on the day, Gary told us, “It was a great day for the club – that day we showed everyone this club is still very much alive and I am delighted for Paul Bowden-Brown as his hard work at the club is now going to be seen even more. The work that Greenie and Docks have done to get the Community Projects and Apprenticeship schemes (which held its first trials last Saturday) up and running have been fantastic and now its down to me and my “backroom team” who at times do not get the praise they deserve to take it to the next level.” If you want details on either the Clubs Apprenticeship package or the Club’s Passport Scheme, please contact Gary, Ian or Greenie for details… PS – just when you thought that Gary’s day was over, he then travelled to Great Wakering Rovers with the development squad and won 3-0 – the perfect end to Gary’s near perfect day!

AFC HORNCHURCH
Thamesmead Town welcome AFC Hornchurch needing to pick up some much needed points to start their climb up the table. The Mead slipped to another defeat last time out going down to a 2-1 loss against Soham Town Rangers. Tonight will be a much sterner test with AFC Hornchurch flying-high in ninth-place, having picked up 29 points so far this campaign via seven wins and eight draws. The Mead will have to be at
14
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
their attacking best if they are to penetrate the divisions best defensive unit.
That said, they club have struck three fewer goals than Thamesmead which all points to a close encounter. Thamesmead will take solace from the Urchins recent form having not won in five matches in all competitions - a run which has contained three 0-0 draws. Keep cheering on the Mead your support is need more than ever!
CLUB HISTORY The club’s history dates back to 1923 when the team were formed as Upminster Wanderers. They played in the Romford League until 1938 when they stepped up to the Spartan League, at the same time dropping the ‘Wanderers’ from their name as an original Upminster club had folded several years earlier. When action resumed after the war Upminster were worried about a shortage of players and returned to the Romford League for 1945-46, winning the title and the Essex Junior Cup, before returning to the Spartan. Promoted to the Premier Division in 1951, they joined the Delphian League a year later, changing their name to Hornchurch & Upminster as they prepared to move into the new Hornchurch Sports Stadium. They took up residence there in November 1952 and have remained there ever since. It is actually in Upminster, though in 1960 that town was dropped from the club’s title and it became Hornchurch FC. By then, in 1959, the club had been elected to the Athenian League. They were to win the Division One championship in 1967 but were relegated in 1969 and promoted back again in 1971. In 1978, the club once again suffered relegation from the Isthmian League, but three years later they were back after achieving the runners-up slot behind Feltham. It was a false dawn, to say the least. Apart from a tenth-place finish out of 21 in 1995, it would be 19 years before Urchins again finished in the top half of their table. They survived several brushes with relegation before losing their Division One place in 1986 and continued to struggle in Division Two North. Inevitably, Urchins found themselves in Division Three when the regionalised divisions were scrapped in 1991. Mick Marsden was appointed manager in February 1998 and in his second season in charge of the club took them to fourth place.
Things were soon to change dramatically as the club was taken over and restructured. Second place in Division Three in 2002 brought promotion to Division One North as the league was reorganised and another runners-up spot followed in 2003 to take Urchins into the Premier Division for the first time Much work was also done on the nearderelict stadium, allowing the club to take its place in the new Conference South after finishing fifth in 2003-04. The dream continued a little longer as, under former Dagenham manager Garry Hill, the team stormed to the top of Conference South. It seemed too good to be true, and it was. On a grim Thursday in November the entire squad was released. The season descended into chaos. Almost 100 players wore first-team shirts as new manager Tony Choules contrived to avert relegation despite a ten-point deduction. But the off-pitch affairs could not be resolved and the club reformed under the name AFC Hornchurch, to be placed by the FA in the Essex Senior League. Former youth manager John Lawrence took charge in May 2005. A brand-new Urchins squad proceeded to run away with the championship and also won the league’s two cup competitions, becoming the first side to achieve the treble. Even so, Lawrence was replaced by former Thurrock manager Colin McBride for the return to the Ryman League and Urchins romped to a second successive title. Success continued in the Premier Division as Urchins finished fourth to secure a playoff place but lost 3-1 in the semi-final to AFC Wimbledon in front of a crowd of 2,897 on a memorable night at Kingsmeadow. The following season also proved to be an eventful one in the league Urchins were fourth going into the final day but a 2-1 defeat at Sutton meant that they finished sixth and missed the play-offs.
THE MATCH OPPOSITION ACTION
Things were still not right off the field and manager Colin McBride took control of the club as chairman midway through the 2009-10 campaign in an effort to sort out the problems caused by the previous regime. His assistant Jimmy McFarlane took over team affairs, initially as caretaker though later to be confirmed in the job. Urchins finished ninth in the league after being in and around the play-off places throughout the season. It was a similar story in 2010-11, when Urchins were unable to sustain their playoff bid in the closing weeks and missed out by four points, finishing tenth. But the ‘two Macs’ achieved their ambition the following season as Urchins recovered from three successive defeats in August to storm into play-off contention. They topped the table more than once, eventually having to settle for the runnersup spot behind Billericay. It proved to be a difficult season and, despite a brief flirtation with the play-off spots, six dropped points to bottom club Truro proved decisive as Urchins finished 20th, two points short of safety. Back in the Ryman League and shaking off the disappointment, Urchins enjoyed a 15-match unbeaten run early in the 201314 season and maintained their challenge for promotion to the very end. A poor finish to the season threatened to derail promotion hopes but Urchins scraped into fifth place on the final day and then reached the play-off final with a 1-0 victory at Kingstonian. With six weeks to go they had finally lifted themselves out of the bottom four and looked on course for survival, only for form to desert the team completely as just two points came from the last ten games. Last season had its up and downs, finishing in a definite down as Urchins lost the playoff final 3-1 at Harlow and must try again to regain their Premier status.
