ISSUE 14 Welcome

Good afternoon and welcome to a very special Saturday afternoon here at Princes Park. It’s always special this time of year because we look to remember those who have and continue to serve our country so proudly, as well as looking to help our next generation when the nation’s favourite little yellow teddy bear pays us a visit! And talking of visitors as well as one of the most respected clubs in the BOSTIK League for this afternoon’s tie, we also welcome the team from “Back of the Net” who have held their on-line radio show in Champs Bar this lunchtime and will be filming the tie; we welcome the “Football Commentary Workshop” and thank them for choosing us for their latest workshop and welcome the budding commentators

who are with us today! There’s more on both elsewhere in today’s Mead as well as Allen’s photos from our win in the last round we catch up with one of the Mead’s stars for this season; we catch up with the Gaffer and there’s the latest news from the Chairman’s office. Before the game, there will be a wreath laying ceremony in the centre circle with both clubs paying their respects this Armistice Day 2017. Enjoy the game this afternoon and safe journey home… lest we never forget! Greenie

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Metropolitan Police FC to Princes Park this Saturday afternoon, our club’s new home for the next five years, and after an enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe journey home. May I also welcome all those that have joined us today for this FA Trophy match whether that be an independent supporter or our old and new fans that join us every week since we moved to Princes Park. A warm welcome to you all and maybe some of you will enjoy the experience and return in the future. May I also welcome my son the vice chairman and his family, who have joined me today and I hope they bring as good luck as they have on previous visits. Well last Saturday we travelled to Walton Casuals’ new ground, a purpose-built sports centre with a large building housing changing rooms, meeting rooms, a kitchen and a very small bar – one side you have the 3G pitch the other an athletics track. I believe it was purposely built PAGE 04

by the council for the community and not a non-league football club to function out of week after week. It will be used as a revenue stream for the council to be used from say 9am until say 10:30pm, 7 days a week by the community and young footballers other than when being used by the two non-league clubs that play there. I was very surprised when we went up to the bar to find no draught beer and only cans or bottles for sale, and then when we asked for hot food they stated the fully equipped kitchen was not in use yet, but there was a burger van down on the side of the 3G Pitch. My own opinion is that it was a total soulless place, and if this is the future for football I do not want anything to do with it. I believe that there is a place for 3G use for the benefit of the community, but there should

THAMESMEAD TOWN V METROPOLITAN POLICE

also be the facility of a grass pitch also as that is what football is all about. I like to drive up to the various football grounds on our travels and feel the ambiance of a nonleague football ground oozing out of the buildings and ground. One of the main reasons for moving to Princes Park was that I listened to my first-team manager when he said I would prefer to play in a football stadium to which I agreed. Anyway, regarding the match it was a very dull game with both sides not playing to their best, resulting in many supporters venting vocal frustration, with some leaving early, but in the end both teams came away with a point. On Tuesday we travelled to Herne Bay; the night was a cold wet one, Ian drove me down and as we managed to get through

> THE CHAIRMAN

the traffic rather quickly. We arrived at the ground around 6 only to find the bar not open, so we went looking for a pub in Herne Bay. 30 minutes later we arrived back in the club car park having found about five fish & chip shops, six Indian takeaways, but no pub. The team were travelling down in a 29-seater mini bus from Dartford and got stuck in traffic, so did not get to the ground until just before 7. The game started, and we started quickly out of the blocks scoring three goals by half-time with Herne Bay scoring one. It was a tense second half, with Herne Bay scoring a second, before we had a player sent off – I was very disappointed at this

as I am very strict on the club discipline and this season we have done very well. So, Tuesday’s nights red Card was not a mirror of the early part of the season. Anyway, our player was sent off after 60 minutes and from that moment Herne Bay threatened our goal on numerous occasions, but we held on for a 3-2 win – in my opinion three well-deserved points and I was very proud of the whole squad for all their efforts. I feel greatly for our first-team manager Tommy, he deserved this win because just recently he has not had the best rub of the green with results and displays, all made worst together with suspensions and injuries to key players, but there he has been at the head leading by example so well-done Tommy and your management team, you made

our Tuesday evening. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those Dartford supporters that join us on matchday when their team is playing away – no-one could blame you for not going on the 600-mile round trip to Truro today – and taking advantage of our Mead Card initiative. It’s not bad gaining entrance to our matches for £5 and over 65s for only £2-50, remember tell all your friends you can enjoy an afternoon or evening watching TTFC. Now let’s enjoy a Saturday afternoon of good football and here’s hoping we are in the next round draw this coming Monday. Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Good afternoon everyone and I’d like to welcome Jim Cooper and his Met Police side to Princes Park for this FA Trophy tie. Jim is a good football man who I haven’t seen or spoken to for a while, but regularly cross swords with during my Tonbridge days and it will be good to see him and catch up this afternoon. This year, Jim and his side are doing very very well is a strong Isthmian Premier League and looking at his team list, I recognise some names again from my time at Tonbridge. So, I know that he’s brought in a fair bit of experience and we’re expecting another very tough and difficult game today. Saying that, we’re in a decent vein of form at the moment with only Cray’s last-minute winner being our only defeat in nine games. As I’ve said in previous notes, the boys have knuckled down and got on with things in very trying circumstances which is a credit to them and the club should be proud of what they’ve achieved so far, this season. We’ve had a good cup run already and are still involved in the Trophy

PAGE 06

and going into today’s games, we’re sitting quite nicely in the league within touching distance of the play-off places with a game in hand in a very competitive league. Again, its early days, but we’ll take that especially given all trying circumstances that we’ve been through in the last few weeks regarding lack of players through one reason or another. This last week is one of those when the old phrase “a week’s a long time in football” could have been written for. Last Saturday at Walton Casuals, we probably played the worst we’ve been since I took over last year at the football club, but we managed to come away not losing which was the only positive to take from the day. The lads got told going into our game at Herne Bay on Tuesday night – it was polar; opposites in the performances and the workrate and we got a thoroughly deserved three points especially with paying the last half hour with ten men in very trying

THAMESMEAD TOWN V METROPOLITAN POLICE

circumstances again. We’ve got a couple of fresh face coming in for today – one is Danny Parrish from Concord – to give us a few more options up top and competition for places which is something that I’ve been trying to do for a while. Today I’m hoping that there will be another new face in the squad, but at the time of writing these notes, I don’t want to put the mockers on this exciting signing as we don’t want to repeat a previous signing where personal circumstances meant that he hasn’t shown up yet – but I’ll still leave that door open for now. Alex Teniola has left the club and moved to Aveley and I’d like to thank Al for all his efforts and goals. He had a very important month for us and again got a little bit frustrated with certain things and decided that perhaps a fresh star elsewhere, but that happens in football and as I’ve said to the boys we’ve got to get used to only having fourteen, fifteen or sixteen players, you can’t just take your

> THE MANAGER

shirt for granted – it is a squad game as I showed Tuesday night by picking a side that could do us a job and win us the game at Herne Bay.

every bit of confidence and faith in my players because when we play the “bigger” teams they’re more than capable in playing at that level themselves minimum.

Now whether we’ll do that today is another matter! The boys have got to be mentally strong if they are left out as its going to be a long, long season and at the end of it, I’m sure every one of my players will have enough football to reflect on.

So, let’s hope that we get our heads down and work hard today and then hopefully get our football brains on and take our chances and defend properly.

You can’t play every single week throughout a whole season and expect to just walk in at a weekend and hang your shorts on a peg.

I’d like to end today by welcoming the team from “Back of the Net” who will be recording this afternoon’s game after focusing on us in the radio show this

morning. We are a club that needs all the publicity that we can get so let’s hope that as a result, we’ll be able to spread the word about the club that a new audience and that somewhere in that audience is the help that the club and the chairman deserves. Thanks for your support and we’ll see you in Champs after the game, Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

Every player nowadays goes through a stage of perhaps a manager finding a game where he can rest him and it’s not to be frowned upon as being left out. It just seems to be the easy way for someone to sort of say that they’ve been left out of the side where it’s nothing to do with that. I do believe that one thing that has changed in football is that it’s become more of a squad game than it was many moons ago which is a reflection of the days where you only had one sub as opposed to the five or seven that you have today. So, I think that indicates how the game has evolved into becoming a squad game. We’ve started November reasonably well, but I know that today is a different kettle of fish, so it will be good to pit ourselves again today against a side from the league above, but I’ve got

LEON SMITH THE CAPTAIN

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Metropolitan Police in the FA Trophy. Good afternoon everyone! When you live the other side of the bridge, a midweek trip to Herne Bay is a long one. But that said and after a delayed arrival, we came out of the blocks absolutely firing and took an early lead through Vinesy’s penalty after young Danny had got flattened.

This pressure continued through the first-half where we went 3-1 up due to two well-worked goals which allowed Harvey to creep round the back and get him on the scoresheet not once, but twice.

it would be repeatable! Second half we expected them to come at us, but we looked solid at the back and looked fine – Harvey thought he’d got his hattrick only to be “beaten” by late flag – tough one that! Taken down to ten men with half an hour to go, we were still very much in the game even though they nicked one back we were composed enough to see it through and bring the three points home with us – even though this time the motorway was shut! Tuesday and last Saturday are two more massive boosts for all of us as we go into yet another cup game as “underdogs” against a good Met Police side – your support can see us through again! THE Academy Good luck to Tom and the lads today and let’s hope we go into the hat for the next round. Our academy lads have played two games since my last programme notes and I’m delighted to report we have won them both. Crystal Palace Trust and Dartford were the opponents and both games were tough affairs. Academy player Lennie Laker who has signed forms for the first team and is on loan at Lordswood in the Southern Counties East Football League – the Kent League to the rest of us – watched the match against Crystal Palace Trust as he has been injured and reported on the match for us... “The Mead started off very slow and Palace scored a deflected shot in the 2nd minute. The goal sprung us into life and we started to put a lot more pressure on the home team resulting in a number of set pieces in our opponent’s half. “The pressure payed off as in the 20th minute Dante McIntosh shot rebounded and fell to the feet of Sudaysi Sendede, who calmly put the ball in the back of the net to level the game. “Five minutes later Zak Coulibaly found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but he was unable to take his chance as his shot drifted wide of the post.” “Our second goal was well deserved and this time Sudaysi put

in a through ball for Ade, whose quick burst of pace took him past the defender and cannoned the ball off the post to give the boys the lead. “In the 40th minute Thamesmead were forced to substitute keeper Rilwan Odaranioe due collision to a collision and right back Owen Shirley put the gloves on. Sadly, in the last moments of the half, Palace equalised to make it 2-2 – the goal came from a quick free-kick which caught us out!” “The second half started very even as both teams come out with a lot of energy, but it was the Mead who went back in front as Ade stroked ball into the back of the net through the keeper’s legs. “After having a lot of possession in the second half, we got our fourth goal of the game as Rueben crossed for Zak to head home and secure the Mead’s 2nd win of the season.” Thanks Lennie and I’m pleased to report that Wednesday just gone, saw us entertain our landlords Dartford and the boys emerged victorious by 4-2 – we’ll have a full report on that next time... CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.

In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

METROPOLITAN POLICE

Recent CLUB HISTORY On 6th July 1829, Sir Robert Peel formed the Metropolitan Police, the first organised Police Force in the world, with an office overlooking the Thames at Whitehall known as Scotland Yard, a name that has become famous throughout the world. Ninety years later, in 1919, the Metropolitan Police Football Club was formed, playing friendly matches until joining the Spartan League in 1928. Apart from the war years (1939-45), the club remained in that competition until 1960. During that time the Blues were League Champions eight times, runners-up once and League Cup winners once. In 1960 the Blues joined the Metropolitan League, winning the League Cup in 1969. In 1971 the Blues were accepted into the Southern League and played in Division South until 1977. In 1977, the Blues moved to the Isthmian League, becoming one of the founder members of the restructured Division Two. A successful first season (1977/78) resulted in the club finishing runners-up to Epsom & Ewell and being promoted to Division One. In Season 1981/82 the club finished 3rd in Division 1, missing promotion by just 2 points. However, fortunes changed and in 1984/5, as a result of finishing third bottom, the Blues were relegated to Division Two (South). On returning to Division Two (South) the Blues finished 7th in both 1985/6 and 1986/7. During 1987/88 the Blues led the Division Two (South) table in January by seven points but they were overhauled by Chalfont St Peter, who won their last two games of season and became champions by just one point. The Blues were runners-up by virtue of a one-goal difference over Dorking. The next two seasons saw the club finish in mid-table in Division One but in 1990/1 the club finished second from bottom and were relegated into the newly formed Division Two of the restructured Diadora (Isthmian) League. The club remained in Division Two for several years, always finishing in the

top half but just outside the promotion positions. Season 1994/5 saw the club celebrate its 75th Anniversary with a game against the Army and the opening of a new grandstand at Imber Court. The Blues finished in 5th position in Division Two. During the next few seasons the club continued to finish in the top half of Division Two. In 2002/3 the Ryman League was restructured and the Blues were placed in Division One South. That season the club finished second from bottom and faced the prospect of relegation. By a stroke of good fortune, only three teams were relegated from Divisions One North and South, therefore, we found ourselves in a relegation playoff against Wembley who finished second from bottom in Division One North. Fortunately, we won both legs of the play-off and retained our place in Division One South. Another poor season in 2003/4 saw us finished just above the relegation places in 20th position. Following the F.A. restructuring of the non-league pyramid, in 2004/5 we found ourselves in the Ryman League Division One. In their first full season in charge, the new management team of Jim Cooper, assisted by Gavin MacPherson and John Nicholson, had an immediate impact and we finished 5th in the Division One, thus qualifying for the play-offs (introduced as part of the F.A. restructuring) where we played Bromley. An evenly balanced encounter ended with the scores 1:1 after extra time but we lost 4:3 in the penalty shoot-out. In 2005/6 we finished in 4th position in the Ryman Division One but again fell at the play-off semi-final stage, losing 1:0 to Dover Athletic. Further F. A. restructuring resulted in a Ryman League Division 1 North and Division 1 South in 2006/7 and the club finished in sixth position in the Division 1 South. With only one club promoted automatically, the club narrowly missed out on a play-off place. In 2007/8 the Blues finished 4th in

the Ryman League Division 1 South but for the third time in four years was beaten in the play-off semi final, this time 2-0 by Cray Wanderers. In 2008/9 the club again finished in 4th position in the Ryman Division One South, thus qualifying for the play offs for the 4th time in 5 seasons, winning the semi final play off match 1:0 against Fleet Town, but losing 0:1 to Cray Wanderers in the final. In 2009/10 MPFC had a disappointing Ryman Division 1 South league campaign. After a poor start the club was never in a position to mount a serious challenge for a play off position and finished in 10th position. The 2010/11 season proved to be the most exciting in the club’s history, culminating in the club winning the Ryman League Division 1 South Championship by the narrow margin of one goal. So, for the first time in the club’s history it competed in the Ryman League Premier Division during the 2011/12 Season. The club got off to a flying start and at Christmas found themselves in 4th position but unfortunately fell away in the second half of the season and finished in 12th position. The 2012/13 Season proved to be the most successful in the clubs history at that stage, finishing in 6th position in the Ryman League Premier Division, missing out on a play-off place on goal difference (9 goals). The 2013/14 Season was less successful in respect of the Ryman League Premier Division in that we spent much of the season in mid-table, eventually finishing in 17th position. The 2014/15 Season ended with us reaching the Ryman League Premier Division playoffs. In 2015/16 we finished in 12th position. The 2016/17 season was one of mixed emotions and ups and downs. The 1st X1 struggled with form and consistency which resulted in a relegation battle that went to the last game of the season.

BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT Condon (29)

Last season’s Ryman North Champions Brightlingsea Regent arrived in Kent mid table in the Premier Division though still looking to fully recover from their managers recent departure to Aveley. Not that they looked on the back foot in the opening exchanges and duly took the lead when Condon side footed home. It was a lead that lasted barely two minutes as Alex Teniola’s neat touch played in Laurent Mendy who did the rest from the angle. The Mead took control of the second half and deservedly went ahead when Bode Anidugbe crashed home spectacularly from distance before Ellis Green provided the icing on a terrific performance by drilling home from the edge of the box. It was clear from the outset that the two sides were well matched from the start and early chances were at a premium with the Mead’s best coming after Joe Denny’s header out of defence fell to Alex who combined with Ellis before racing into the box to

get on the end of the cross to test Regent keeper Cowler with a header. Brightlingsea then showed the home side as they took the lead out of the blue when Conlon was on hand to turn home Rees’ low cross at the back post unopposed. The response was as brilliant as it was instant – Laurent firing home after Alex’s delightful touch had played him. The Mead had been behind for only 142 seconds – thanks to Stephen McCartney from Kentish Football for the timing. Paul Vines then went close before Harvey drilled in a shot just wide for the visitors, before Brightlingsea had two great chances at the end of the half. First a combination of Joe and keeper Lewis Carey ensured Ricky Griggs didn’t poke his shot over the line, before some dreadful defending presented Hunt with a glorious chance which he could only blaze wide. The home side went close to scoring inside the opening five minutes when Leon Smith launched a long throw into the box, and vis Scott Kinch’s great flick, Alex just couldn’t poke his

effort inside the post! Cowler then denied Alex again, before the Mead finally went in front – and how! Bode collected the ball from Ellis before firing spectacularly into the top corner giving the Regent keeper no chance as the ball arrowed into the visitor’s net. Moments later, Bode went close again with another drive that went just the wrong side of the post before Vinesy was denied by a smart Cowler save. With the Mead moments away from the next round, the contest was decided in sixty seconds as first Lewis pulled off a world class save to deny Condon’s low free kick, before Ellis put the icing on a tremendous Mead performance at the other end as Vinesy found him in space and his left foot did the rest as Cowler was again beaten spectacularly from distance as the Mead’s place in Monday’s draw was secured. That’s one defeat in seven now for the Mead but this was perhaps the sides best performance in that time as the squad now look to their first week off in six! by Mike Green

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

BODE ANIDUGBE In the latest of our Player Features, we speak to one of the heroes of the Mead’s win in the last round against Brightlingsea – a midfielder who almost slipped right through the Mead’s grasp… Greenie this week has been talking to BODE ANIDUGBE…

Bode is in his second spell at the club and we started by asking what the differences were between the first day and what he found when he came back. He told us: “From a playing perspective, my first time around at the Mead was a bit of a mixed feeling for me as it was something I should have been looking forward to as it was my first year playing men’s football. “The team then was filled with experienced players at the time I was probably one of the youngest. But the downside of that was that my playing time was extremely limited and some games not even being in the squad at all, so it was hard to enjoy or feel involved in anything that was

really going on as I felt I didn’t really play a part. “So I never really knew what the league was about or what was expected. Now, it is a completely different feeling as now I am playing regularly week in week out, I am in a team that has a mixture of youth and experienced players so there is a balance to it now. “I am settled this time around and the experience I have picked up has allowed me now to know what to expect when playing and the different demands. It seems as if it’s been a new start for everyone at the club this season with our move to Princes Park, but from Bode’s perspective, it’s almost as if he’s come home as Dartford is one of his old clubs. “Yes, coming

to Princes Park has been like starting afresh for everyone including myself, the stadium and its facilities are really nice and being able to come to play home matches here is something to look forward to as not many in the league will have as good a stadium compared to Princes Park. “At the same time, I still see a few familiar faces around from my time being at Dartford, but I feel it was also like a new start for me as I was at a different stage in my career at the time when I was at Dartford compared to the stage I am currently at now.” And that seems to have had a lot to do with the influence of the Gaffer and OB as Bode was quick to agree. “The faith Tommy has shown has been

PAGE 27

PLAYER INTERVIEW <

extremely huge for me as he has helped me bring back an unexplainable passion for football that I truly love which I felt I lost after my first spell with Thamesmead and for this reason this has helped me grow as a player and has shown in my performances,” he said. “I will be forever grateful for what Tommy has done for me I am playing under a manager that I know who trusts and believes in me and someone I am willing to run through a brick wall for which shows just how key he has been for me. “Also, OB is someone I think of very highly and he too has also helped me massively to progress my game. Playing under Tommy has helped me become a better player as I have learnt an incredible amount and Tommy is always giving me advice on ways to help me become an even better player and progress

PAGE 28

my game to another level which for me as someone who always wants to improve and be better is brilliant to have a manager of that calibre, the same which I could say for OB as well the two of them have a lot of knowledge and share that with me at any opportunity available and overall looking back from last season to now I believe I have had quite a bit of success under them! “There are quite a few memories that stick with me dearly from last season to now so far to date from playing away at Guernsey in the FA Cup last season and, also the home tie replay of that match as I brought my mum to! “From that incredible game at VCD which we came back to win 3-2 in which I scored the equaliser and assisted the winner, from scoring the equaliser away at Romford to help the team get a point with

THAMESMEAD TOWN V METROPOLITAN POLICE

only a few minutes left with ten men! From scoring in my first game back in the 5-0 win over Horsham after missing the first 3 weeks of this season which I was gutted about! “But I would have to say my best memory is from last season in the second match of the season away at Thurrock coming off the bench 1-0 down with 20 mins left and scoring 2 goals the second one being in the last minute(!) to help the team win 2-1. “My aims are to continue getting as many minutes as possible which is one of the biggest things for me, to carry on scoring and creating goals helping the team overall to do as best as we possibly can but one thing I have my heart set on is to win some silverware!!!! Also, a couple of personal things which Tommy & OB have mentioned to me which I want to get right when I am on the pitch!”

> VIEW FROM THE TERRACES <

THE WOODEN MAN IS BACK THE VIEW FROM THE TERRACES After the response from our first trip to the terraces. “Woody” is back and has been casting his eye over the past few weeks from his lofty perch on the terraces on the main road side of the ground... he is after all five metres tall! Anyway, the next words are all Woody’s picking up post FA Cup...

After the heights of Billericay came the downer and what a downer it proved to be against Ramsgate! At least we followed that with a dominating performance at Phoenix and a hat-trick from Tashi with a well-deserved 3-2 win. Greenwich arrived here level in the League and came from behind to beat us before a truly shocking pitch at Hythe with something amounting to

PAGE 30

crop circles and molehills saw us beaten between the humps and bumps. The Trophy draw (which was made before many of us had our summer holidays in July) pitched us against our old foes - the Urchins of Hornchurch who were riding high in our former residence of the North. Chipstead away was a very competent performance with Bodes goal, a poacher’s finish from Tash and a penalty save from

THAMESMEAD TOWN V METROPOLITAN POLICE

Lewis seeing head home with the points. A late, late, late, late, very late Avery header saw the Mead beat Herne Bay with practically the last kick - before it was off to the seaside on a misty, murky Tuesday Hastings night the cockles with another last minute fully deserved win which saw some decent stuff played throughout all the way up until the final third of the pitch. Last season’s North champs Brightlingsea came next in

the Trophy, and in front of a good crowd – it’s always nice to have company on the terraces - we ran out convincing 3-1 winners with stunning goals from Laurent, Bode, and Ellis all worthy of Goal of the Month – before we more onto today! Just wanted to put in thanks to Tash who’s been recalled by the Angels - no not to the Pearly Gates but back down the A21 - a good kid who was a joy to watch and who knows maybe back in the green again one day - hope so! Watching from over here, there’s the feeling that boy we’ve shown we can compete against the very best – punching above our weight – and yes we are lucky to have a fantastic manager and assistant OB – the effort, commitment, togetherness and some lovely football. I know it’s a long season but anything is possible keep the faith. Until next time… UP THE MEAD Woodie
