THE MANAGER

TERRY

SPILLANE

I’d like to welcome you all to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome AFC Sudbury to our home ground. We went into our home game vs GT Wakering Rovers knowing it would be a tough game, as they all are this season!! The players were determined to get a win after the disappointment of being 2-0 up only to come away with 2-2 draw away at Soham the week before. However GWR didn’t read the script and after a very forgetful first 45 mins we found ourselves 0-2 down! The team talk at half-time was “lively” but constructive and the players responded brilliantly. We changed formation and It was a completely different game in the 2nd half as we took complete control of the game. Vinesy got 2 quick goals for us on 55 & 60

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

mins and on the 80 minute mark, Theo scored what turned out to be the winner. There’s no hiding the fact that we as a team were poor in the first-half. However the second half was a great team effort and showed the character and fight this squad has! I’d find it hard to pick anyone out in particular in the game but I thought Vinesy, Lee & Theo were magnificent and the young lad from our under 21s Phillipe was outstanding with his pace, energy and passing ability. So in the space of a week we’d endured the ups and downs of non-league football. I know which one I prefer! Our next game was last weekend with our second trip of the

season to Thurrock, this time to play Romford. It’s a game I always look forward to as they always seem to be entertaining with plenty of goals in them. This one did not disappoint as we won by the odd goal in five!!! We found ourselves 1-0 down at half-time. Our commitment was there but we were making to many poor decisions that were costing us. We were getting caught in possession & too many times our passes were under hit. That said though to Romfords credit, they capitalised on our mistakes. We told the players they needed to be brave in possession now and to up the tempo in the second-half.

THE MANAGER

We did just that and it seemed only a matter of time before we scored BUT Romford went 2-0 on the hour as they hit us on the break. We made two quick substitutions with Butts & Ben replacing Tyrus and Mike. With his first touch Ben scored his first goal for the club when he struck a superb shot across the keeper from 20 yads out & instantly the course of the game changed, as the boys completely dominated from then on with wave after wave of attacking football.

Then finally on the 89 minute mark, Lee provided a moment of magic as he charged into the box passing three players & crossing for the onrushing Vinesy to smash into the top corner to bring us level. Our oppo were devastated and we took full advantage when on 93 mins Butts finished off a great move when Theo cleverly headed back across goal for Butts to tap home. A well deserved win for sure but I hope the players take on board what they’re doing to me and

Tony’s heart rates!!! And so today and what a test for us against the league leaders. I just hope the conditions are better than the gale force winds we endured for the previous game at their place back in November. Thanks as ever for your continued support and baking. Come on you Mead! Terry Spillane First-team Manager

THE BOARDROOM

PAUL

BOWDENBROWN

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of AFC Sudbury to our home at SCT this Saturday afternoon, and hope after an enjoyable game and refreshments they all have a safe journey home. May I also say a hello to all of our season ticket holders, all of you have made this season totally awesome, as it’s great to see families enjoying themselves either on an afternoon or an evening watching their local team. I must admit when I thought of the £30 season ticket initiative it was only going to be for one season at the £30 rate, but I feel that as you have spent your hard earnt monies and committed your family time to support the club I should honour that commitment so I have decided to continue the initiative and it will still be at the price of £30 for the forthcoming season. All I ask is that you pass the information of the £30 season ticket on to all of your friends, neighbours and also the mums and dads who you meet picking up their children at the school gate, or your work colleagues remember the only condition I ask is that any applicant must live within 5 miles of the football ground, come on we have 37 tickets let’s get it over 06

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

100 for next season, remember we are a community club and you are a part of the community There is a lot to be said regarding the last two matches where the team have found themselves 2-0 down at half-time but have come back to claim the 3 points, I will leave that to our first-team manager to give his view of the last two matches. My concern is, firstly with my current ill health I do not think I can take the stress of seeing your club on the reverse of a 2-0 result at half-time then through bloody determination and bloody skill you come back to win the game, may I ask the squad, who I know read this programme to try and make my Saturday afternoon a little less stressful please. I have said I know the players read this programme so I would like to settle a misunderstanding, it would seem my words within from the boardroom when I was advising one and all what happens when a chairman gets to a point within the

season that he feels he is not going to get the target that was agreed at the beginning of the season wages are usually reduced yes it’s a fact this does happen. But at no time have I actually advised my manager that we have reached that point of the season and whilst we continue to collect the points and the play-offs remain a possibility I will not be having that chat with the manager, and on recent displays I can only see us moving closer to the required point tally. So rather than worry about wage cuts I would ask that you just to continue to give your all and continue the good work on the field as you have all season under the stewardship of Terry and his management team, and be assured I will honour my commitment that I agreed with the manager at the start of the season but you must remember it’s a two way street success brings points. Within my notes of the last

THE BOARDROOM

few weeks I have written some negative comments with regard to current matters with our landlords. But at a recent Trust board meeting I had the opportunity to explain in detail my plans the content having been included within my January revised business plan and football development plan.

“I have decided to continue the [season ticket] initiative and it will still be at the price of £30 for the forthcoming season” To be honest I received a very positive response from those present. I was able to show that whatever the trust felt we as a club all of our plans showed that we intend to be playing at the SCT for

the next 5 years minimum, and it was up to me to ensure Peabody senior management included this club within its future budgets for the SCT. I fully understand that Peabody are a very big housing trust and having a sports stadium within their portfolio is not what was originally expected. The Peabody Trust work to very strong budgets and as they are a charity they must be seen to be operating within a profitable/ break even scenarios and not be involved with loss making business. Unfortunately as a football club operating at this level, especially with a small gate, has to rely on the generosity of a chairman to make up all the shortfalls, this is okay but does not make business sense therefore new initiatives and restructuring must take place. Yes some may hurt but if this fine old club is to become financially stable then we must take tough actions and if these actions are

supported by one and all I will continue to fund any shortfalls for the short term allowing the result of these actions to work. I feel that if we take the initiatives as written within the business plan this club can be as successful as the club off the field as on the field. We should all be very proud of what we all achieving at this time, all I need to perceive is seeing all parties throughout the club working together in partnership to achieve the laid down aims that both Ian Docker and myself have prepared we both believe that next season we will have the basis of ensuring a clear playing pathway from our youth development section through the academy giving all the players the opportunity to be playing in the first-team. Now let’s enjoy the game this afternoon. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman & Managing Director

THE OPPOSITION

AFC SUDBURY

CLUB INFO Nickname: Yellows Founded: 1999 Ground: King’s Marsh Chairman: Philip Turner Manager: Jamie Godbold Last Season: 3rd

Sitting proudly atop the Ryman League Division One North AFC Sudbury have right to be proud of their achievements so far this season. Whilst nothing is won in February, the club are in the driving seat in the promotion race and currently sit eight points ahead of their nearest rivals with a game in hand to boot. The Yellows have picked up 73 points from their 32 games this far into the campaign coming in the form of 23 wins, four draws and five defeats. That said the club can be beaten as shown last weekend when Thurrock thumped them 4-0. Sudbury did bounce back mid-week beating Tilbury 3-0 but make no mistake this will be a difficult game for the Mead.

THE OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY AFC Sudbury was formed on Tuesday 1st June 1999 from the amalgamation of Sudbury Town (founded 1885) and Sudbury Wanderers (founded 1958) The club plays at The Wardale Williams Stadium, Sudbury, Suffolk with a capacity of 2500. In their first season 1999/00, they club finished third in the Jewson Premier League and the Reserve side won the Premier League title in the Essex and Suffolk Border League. In 2000/01 the club powered their way to the Jewson League Premier title, reached the first round proper of the FA Cup and the Reserves won the Essex and Suffolk Border League Cup. In 2001/02 the club retained the Jewson League and reached the semi-finals of the F.A. Vase and won the Suffolk Premier Cup. In 2002/03 A.F.C. Sudbury retained the Jewson League Premier title, and won the Suffolk Premier Cup. After this manager Keith Martin stepped down and was replaced by the reserve team manager Gary Harvey. 2003/04 saw a fourth successive Ridgeons League title and the Suffolk Premier Cup retained. In 2004/05 the club were again successful, they won their fifth consecutive Ridgeons Premier League title (a record for the Eastern Counties League), and for third year in succession reached the final of the FA Vase another record, unfortunately they again lost, 3-2 to Didcot Town.

In 2005/06 the club continued in the Ridgeons Premier League and finished third, the Ridgeons League Cup was won for the first time and the fifth round of the FA Vase reached. The Reserve side played in the Ridgeons Reserve League Southern Division and won that. In the play-off between the North and South winners, they were runners up but won the Suffolk Junior Cup. Season 2006/07 saw the club accept promotion to Step 4, and the new Ryman League Division One North. The club changed managers with Mark Morsley taking over. The play-off finals were reached, where they lost in a penalty shoot out. The 2007/08 season was a nearly season. The club was still managed by Morsley aided by assistant Nicky Smith and coach Paul Skingley. The club got to the final of the Ryman League Cup but lost on penalties. They again reached the play-off finals but lost in the semi-finals. The club’s Reserve side led by Ian Manby finished runners up in the Ridgeons Reserve League South. In May 2008, Morsley resigned and Nicky Smith was appointed manager with Chris Tracey as his assistant. A few days later the club were moved from the Ryman League and placed in the Southern League Midland Division for season 2008/09. The 2009/10 season saw Smith and Chris Tracey still in charge, and still in the Southern League. AFC lost in the First Qualifying Round of both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. In the Southern League Cup it was a Second Round

exit and it was the same round in the Suffolk Premier Cup. AFC finished the season in 14th position in the league. The club’s Reserve team played in the Ridgeons Reserve League and had an average season. Smith and Tracey remained in charge of the first team for 2010/11 and Ian Manby the second team, with a new A Team started and played in the Colchester and North Essex League under Phil Root with the first team ending in seventh place. Season 2011/12 saw Smith and Tracey start the season but Smith later resigned and Tracey was put in temporary charge and later appointed permanent manager. In the Ryman League North they finished in eighth place. The start of season 2012/13 saw Chris Tracey in charge with Barry Lakin at his side, he departed in September and Ian Brown joined as his assistant. Tracey resigned in March 2013 and Michael Shinn and Ian Brown took charge until the end of the season. In May 2013 the club appointed David Batch along with Head Coach Steve Eastaugh as their new management team for 2013/14 and they quickly set about building not only a fresh squad but also the entire structure of the football club. The 2014/15 season saw Batch and Eastaugh start it but leave in December. A new management team of Jamie Godbold and Andy Reynolds took over and led the club to third place and to the play-offs but were unsuccessful in them.

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Good Afternoon everyone welcome to today’s game against the Current League Leaders AFC Sudbury. May I offer a warm welcome to the players and officials especially Sudbury’s Secretary David Webb who I have known many years through football, we first met when we were both with clubs in the Southern League. Today’s game will be a big test, a win is really a must but Sudbury are getting some good results they had a blip last Saturday when in-form Thurrock enjoyed a 4-0 victory at Sudbury. They do however still lead the table and

they will know that we will offer a stern test of their Champions credentials. We ourselves enjoyed a fortunate victory last Saturday when we made the short trip to Thurrock to play their tenants Romford, a very poor first-half from us saw us 2-0 down at half-time and hardworking Romford deserved that lead. They were unfortunate to have their goalkeeper dismissed in injury time of the first-half, this did have some bearing on the second 45 minutes and we did in all honesty lay siege in their half but needed two very late goals from Paul Vines and Richard Butler to pick up three points, Ben Glasgow

being our other man on target. This coming Tuesday will see us visit Redbridge in a rearranged fixture it’s a 7.45 kick off but please check our website before travelling. No player movement to report this week other then Ainsley Everett has joined Peacehaven and Telscombe in the Ryman South on a month’s loan, we wish Ainsley well, it’s a move that will give him some much needed match fitness. Enjoy today’s game. Dave Joy Club Secretary

INTERNATIONAL “FINALLY” WE’RE ON FACEBOOK RECOGNITION We’d like to send our congratulations to SAMUEL ORISOTOKI from our under 21s who last weekend attended an ENGLAND UNDER 18s SCHOOLBOYS get together at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. The club now has an active FACEBOOK account simply log onto www.facebook.com and search for “THAMESMEAD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB” and “like” it for all the up to date news from the club - or you can simply do it the “old fashioned” way and log onto the club website at www. thamesmeadtownfc.com

Today then is the day that we’re going to do the draw - and it will be done this afternoon. Thank you for your patience and good luck!

GREAT WAKERING ROVERS Nash (15), Pinto (38)

Saturday 23rd January 2016 | Ryman League Division One North | Sporting Club Thamesmead | Att: 90

It was once said that a week is a long time in politics! In football circle’s there can be times when it seems like an eternity! And so we have the last seven days for the Mead. 2-0 up at Soham seven days ago and seemingly coasting to victory before being pegged back and having to settle for a draw, the boot was most definitely on the other foot. From a home perspective the opening 45 minutes were desperately disappointing as Great Wakering established what seemed to be a match winning 2-0 lead. Jay Nash could have given the visitors the lead in the opening minutes only to be denied by a great Andy Walker save. But sadly the Mead didn’t heed the warning, and on the quarter hour Nash made no mistake heading home

a cross to give the visitors the lead. The visitors though threatened throughout on the break and in the end will have possibly been a little bit frustrated to “only” have gone in with a 2-0 lead that was eventually given to them by Pinto’s great drive seven minutes before the break. With the fantastic home run now in serious jeopardy, the home dressing room must have been an interesting place to be as whatever the Boss and his staff said to those in green and white worked wonders as the second half was the exact opposite of the first. But yet not even the most hopeful of Mead fan would have expected what was to happen in the opening minutes of the second half as the home side following half time changes which saw Farai Hallam

replace Marc Gorbell at the back and young Phillipe Blaettler making his debut in midfield in place of Tommy Spillane, kicked into gear and played some super football. Within the opening fifteen minutes of the half, Paul Vines had not only put the Mead back in the game with a great header for his seventh goal for the club (in just his fifteenth game for the club), he then levelled before the hour mark with a tremendous drive from outside the box for his eighth of the season as the game had completely turned on its head. The Mead then went in search of the lead and the goal that would win the game and they duly completed the job to take the points complete when Theo was on hand to bundle the ball over the line after Tyrus’ shot had come back off a post.

THAMESMEAD

Coe (41), Woodward (60)

Glasgow (65), Vines (88), Butler (90)

Saturday 30th January 2016 | Ryman League Division One North | Ship Lane | Att: 74

For the third time in January, the Mead have won a five goal thriller and for the second week in succession they recovered from a two goal second half deficit! In a game dominated by a biting cold wind, the home side took one of their few first half chances when Coe rammed the ball home from the angle after Andy Walker had made a fine save to deny Reynolds low drive four minutes from the break. From the resulting corner, the Mead defense couldn’t clear and Coe was able to net on his Romford debut. On the stroke of half time, the home side were reduced to ten men when home keeper Gooch sped from his goal line to deny Tyrus Gordon-Young only for him momentum to carry him beyond the edge of the box, leaving

referee Finnagan with no choice but to show the keeper the red card. With no keeper on the bench, centre forward Reynolds took the gloves over. And Reynolds would have surely been delighted himself with the way that Woodward drove home the home sides second on the hour as he raced onto a great ball down the inside left channel before giving Walker no chance in the Mead goal. The goal promoted an immediate change from the Mead both in personal – with Ben replacing Michael Aziaya – and a formation change. And the changed worked within five minutes as the Mead got back into the game as Glasgow raced onto a defence splitting through ball from Lee to give the stand in keeper no chance from the edge of the box.

The Mead’s fightback then stalled as Tyrus was laid out by Reynolds when challenging for a Jay Porter cross. Meanwhile on the pitch Coe came agonisingly close to sealing the game for the home side as he shot across the face of goal as he exploited the room in behind the Mead’s back line as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser – an equaliser that finally arrived two minutes from time. Another great Lee run found its way through to Vinesy, and the striker duly beat Reynolds with some aplomb! There was only going to be one winner now, and from Max Mitchell’s fine deep cross, Theo FairweatherJohnson brilliantly knocked the ball back across the face of goal for Butt’s to bundle the ball home for the goal that sealed the Mead their second successive win in five goal thriller’s.

TRAVELLER’S TALES

TRAVELLER’S TALES

The travels of a Thamesmead Town away supporter...

Following a surprisingly orgasmic night at Ship Lane in October when the boys convincingly disposed of Thurrock, Saturday’s return journey to face Romford was certainly an away trip with a difference.

and with Jamie in Liverpool sampling the obscure delights of Marine taking on Darlington in the Evo-Stick Northern Premier League, what else to do but enjoy the delights of the well stocked hospitality suite, accompanied by the Chairman among others.

A winter spent mastering control of four wheels saw Farai venture out on his first excursion from South to East London via the “Dartford Pipe”, in search of 3 much needed points as we kept pace with the Play-off pack. Pace seldom displayed in the centre of the Mead defence had Farai completing our arrival well ahead of schedule at 12.45, leaving many of his team mates trailing in his wake.

An enjoyable pre-match burger (recommended) provided some sustenance against a cold wind as our heroes set about the task in hand. A burger in sharp contrast to the cup of hot water thinly disguised as Bovril (not recommended) that was consumed at half-time!!

So, 2 hours to fill before kick-off, 22

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Sadly, Mead support was surprisingly thin on the ground as we duly took the spoils, leaving me a lonely figure as I single handedly

applauded our boys off at the end of a frustratingly fluctuating encounter. And it was a lonesome walk back to the Bar where I excitedly awaited the arrival of the Team for a quick post-match celebration. Once concern over Tyrus’ stretcher assisted journey from the battlefield were allayed, we were able to reflect on the progress made on those in front of us in the table. And so another away day comes to a successful conclusion.............. now on to Wroxham next week. COYM!! The Traveller

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD

JANUARY NOMINEES Theo- Fairweather-Johnson

Lee Prescott Paul Vines At the end of each month throughout the 2015/16 season, Terry Spillane and the management team will nominate the best first team player to receive the Morgan Player of the Month award. Thamesmead Town are delighted to welcome The Morgan Public House into our family here, especially to manager Scott for kindly agreeing to sponsor the award. “We only opened in the summer of 2015, and we’re delighted to join the Thamesmead family. We’d like to wish the club all the success for the coming season, and we look forward to welcoming both players and supporters into The Morgan over the months ahead,” he told The Mead. Situated less than five minutes from Sporting Club Thamesmead on the A2016 in Belvedere, The Morgan is 24

the perfect place to dine and relax. It boasts a varied and extensive menu with a superb daily carvery right at the heart what they do. The carvery is freshly prepared and offers a choice of three succulent meats carved by their friendly chefs, temptingly displayed alongside a wide range of seasonal vegetables and homemade Yorkshire puddings. At the bar you can choose from a superb selection of cask ales from Marston’s’ five breweries, a great wine list featuring choices from the distinguished Rothschild wineries, as well as an impressive range of ciders, soft drinks and spirits.

THE UNDER 21S

THE UNDER 21s with Gary Ryan Things are going really well with the u21s this season. I couldn’t be any more pleased with the attitudes that I’ve had from all the squad. It’s hard keeping everyone happy with the amount of games we currently get in the Ryman league. But the players have adapted very well indeed. We’ve also had some fantastic results and performances mainly on the road. We drew 0-0 at Hornchurch before a 4-4 draw at Harlow Town and both games produced some great football from our lads. But our best performance so far was away to unbeaten Enfield Town when we won 3-0 with a really great performance - the desire and determination the lads showed that night was second to none! Incidentally we beat the same side here at the SCT in the week - a great double!

26

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

We had four first-team players involved that night at Enfield and their experience was what cemented the team together. A great night for all involved. I’m glad to say that this group of lads have continued to progress and develop throughout the year. We’ve had three players feature in the first-team so far in Jeremiah Efe, Elliott Usher and our keeper Max something that they and all of our coaches are very proud of. We’ve also signed 16-year-old Alfie Day on u21s Ryman forms from our academy, and I’m already looking at giving more of Ian’s boys an opportunity in the remainder of our season. If you want to come and see us, we’re at home again this coming Tuesday when we welcome XXX at 7:45pm - its only £3.00 to get in and so

if you’re not going to Redbridge with the first team, why not pop along? Last but by no means least, everyone who is involved with the club should be proud of SAM ORISOTOKI’s achievement’s last weekend at Lilleshal when he spent a fantastic couple of days with the England under 18s Schoolboys squad. I know that Greenie wanted to get a feature on Sam into today’s programme, but sadly time and other commitments beat us. That said, look out in the next programme for that... We would like to wish Good luck to Terry , the staff and all the players in today’s game against the League leaders... let’s all get behind the boys this afternoon! Gary Ryan

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD Once again, we’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Throughout the 2015/16 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. Again, we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter, Charlotte, for donating the prize to the club. This year, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. COMMERCIAL CORNER

COMMERCIAL NEWS

with Mike Green

Good afternoon everyone and welcome our visitors to the SCT today from Sudbury. Lets hope for better conditions than we experienced in the reverse fixture! That said as I look at the long range weather forecast, it looks like the wind at Sudbury could well be replaced by the rain of the SCT this afternoon. First from me is an apology for not being at our last home game. Illness prevented my attendance and caused a second postponement of the drawing of our 2016 NEW YEAR DRAW - another huge thank you to everyone who has entered and everyone who has donated prizes. The draw will take place after the game this afternoon, and a full list of prize-winners will be listed on the club website tomorrow Sunday, with the same list being available at our next home game

against MALDON & TIPTREE in ten days times - as well as being in the match programme that day.

Finally today, why not have a look at the club shop which is open as usual today so why not treat yourself?

We’ll shortly too be announcing some special offers for the rest of the season. One of these offers be announced on our website tomorrow (Sunday) morning and will also be on our social media feeds over the coming days. And whilst on that subject a thank you to KEITH JONES for showing me the way around the club’s “new” Facebook account - details of which are listed in Mead Matters in today’s programme.

Cheers and enjoy the game! Greenie If your company would like to sponsor a forthcoming home game, please see Greenie TODAY or contact him on commercialttfc@live.co.uk or alternatively 07845 751319

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

10

CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34
