CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Great Wakering FC, on this cold December afternoon, and after some hospitality and hopefully an enjoyable game they all have a safe return journey home. May I also personally, once again, take this opportunity to welcome all those local residents that have decided to join us as new supporters through our season ticket initiative this season. I know that the benefit of the £30.00 season ticket for four has made a lot of difference to the families that are involved at this time with this initiative, and I hope during the next few weeks we have more families join us and become new supporters. Also may I thank all the schools that have joined the passport scheme that allows all persons under the age of 14 to come to a match free of charge as long as they are accompanied

by an elder who is only charged the concession price. And finally also all the schools that have arranged to visit the club during the season, the club allow them on free as we feel that the children may go home and tell their parents how much they enjoyed the experience, but whatever scheme you are involved in you are very welcome to SCT as the club’s guest. Since my last programme notes whilst we have been on the road we have unfortunately not put any points on the table. I must say at Norwich we were up against a terrible pitch, it was soggy and very wet underfoot, the day was made worst by some very dubious refereeing decisions. I do not mind a hard and firm referee but please let’s have some consistency in the basis of the decisions made,

I personally find this season a lot of games being truly ruined by inconsistent decisions made by the officials I fully understand that, in their defence, it is always said we must have respect in the game but I feel it goes both ways and although we may drum into our players the word respect, when you have the level of inconstant decisions that only result in player frustration and bookings it has to be put right probably at a higher level. When I see the monies we have to pay the officials each match it is quite a shock to the system, it makes me wonder who decides to pick the furthers referee to referee matches resulting in high travelling costs, therefore I feel for that type of money we the clubs deserve better. I pride myself with the way we run

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

our boardroom here at SCT, and this is mirrored by the great reaction we receive from all those visiting on matchdays, so because we give such a high standard I notice the deterioration of the standard of hospitality we receive as directors in other boardrooms on our travels.

long time and I have learnt that you must have faith in your manager and to date I certainly do 100%, of course if that changes I will be the first to know and should that happen I will take whatever decisions are needed to protect the status of this club. But those that travel around with the club will note that we are making many more chances we are just not converting these chances into goals for many reasons. If we were losing and we were not making chances at all then I would worry, so I feel that Tommy will fine tune the current squad he has at this time.

I thought there was a guideline as to what was expected but once again the standards are dropping, I could mention individual clubs but that would gain no purpose as it is my opinion only, but I feel the league should look at their own standards and why they are not being met. One point I will make, we travelled 141 miles to Norwich on Saturday, some two and half hours driving, and when we arrive to find a nice club House, I go to the bar ask for a non-alcoholic beer and get a reply that they did not sell many of these so they stopped ordering them. I said surely if you know many clubs are travelling hours to get to your ground they would not be able to drink alcohol and drive, so surely it would be more prudent to sell nonalcoholic beers? They replied that’s your problem we have to deal with our locals. David and I went into the boardroom, made ourselves known and had a cup of tea before the match, and in the club house there was a large area of glass that looked out over the pitch with a sign above it saying directors and committee only, so as it was a cold day, I sat down to watch the match from the inside area only to be kindly told this area is only for home directors and committee, so I was asked to move outside in the -2 degree weather. At half-time we had a cup of soup in the boardroom before the next half, at the SCT at this time Sue will go

around our visitors for the day and ask what drink would they like for after the match when the food comes out. No-one asked so I assumed we would asked at full-time, but no the boardroom was closed, so we were not offered refreshments or drinks, before we left for our long drive home. This is where I feel that the league should monitor how certain clubs are operating, not all, but a great number are cutting corners for whatever reason. All I will say we will never lower our standards of hospitality and for this I must thank the kitchen staff at SCT for the standard of food prepared overseen by Sue our boardroom manager for matchdays. Finally and you would expect me to briefly discuss the current situation with regard to our fine club, here we are rock bottom of the league, no home at this time to play our games for next season, and as a lot of people are saying both at the club and outside, when is the chairman going to call it a day and get a new manager in? Well quite frankly of course I am worried, but I have been around a

I personally feel that some are not committing themselves fully to the shirt of this club for many reasons in my opinion, I expect from every single player that wears the shirt of this club 100% effort at all times. I know that Tommy runs a very tight changing room and he ensures that everybody in our dressing room is in it together and willing to shed blood sweat and tears for the club badge as he does 24/7, so any player that does not understand the enormity of the task Tommy has to do to turn the results around, and does not want to put in 100% effort for themselves they will soon be asked to leave. We are in this together from the top to the bottom of this fine club I am unconditionally supporting the management and playing staff all I ask is for that little bit extra from everyone, listen to what Tommy and Alex tell you they are the experience few, so let’s support Tommy and his boys as our bit of luck has to change sooner than later, so let’s be that 12th player on our squad at today’s match. Enjoy the match! Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Great Wakering Rovers to Bayliss Avenue for a game that’s important to both sides.

issue. We’ve got to stop giving away silly goals – a habit that I thought we’d got out of earlier in the season.

We’re going into another important game today knowing that we can’t feel sorry for ourselves! Sometime this season we’ve been our own worst enemy, and there have been times when we’ve been unlucky.

That said, at Norwich we played the last twenty minutes or so with only ten men and didn’t really create. But then to lose the game in the 94th minute was a bitter pill to swallow and to come away with nothing was hard to take.

Last weekend was the prime example – we gave Haringey Borough a three goal start and that’s very hard to come back from. OK the boys found some desire in the second half where we could have snatched a point at the end of the game, but that’s not the

But these things are sent to test you and we’ve got to stand up to things like that. Yes, we’re in a results business and the results haven’t been good enough so we’ve got to take the criticism that comes our way but try to put it into a positive because I don’t

think we’re playing that badly but we haven’t been winning games and so it’s time for us all to man up and get on with the job ahead of us and get up this league. We’ve got three games to go until we’re half way through our season and reflecting back on it, I’m as disappointed as anyone to see where we are. Having managers tell me after games what I already know (how good we are) is no good to me. We’re not playing poorly – at the start of the season we were all over the shop as a fresh team and some of the comments were fair. But now we’re a side creating chances and because

“I’m as disappointed as anyone to see where we are, but we’re not playing poorly” 06

MANAGER’S NOTES

of that we’ve got to keep the lads positive! We could have got a point at Norwich and it hasn’t been mentioned that we played for nearly an hour with ten men at Haringey after a very, very harsh sending off! I still don’t know what Leon’s first booking was for, but the second one I found extremely harsh as it was for a 50/50 challenge and he’d already been booked. But we showed again even with ten men that we can get back into a game but we shouldn’t be putting ourselves in the position to start with! I know that Walks hurt himself against today’s opponents in September and it’s great to see the recovery that he’s

made so far. We all know that it’s a long road back from a broken knee cap and I know that he will get well and recovers completely for his family and his own future – the long term benefits for his knee means. I hope, that he won’t rush to play again until it is completely right. It’s great to see him around the club on match-days, and it’s also great to see your support for him! When you’re down the bottom you have to take the criticism that comes your way but from a footballing point of view and a changing room point of view, I’m honest in them in there and I know what I’m seeing. It’s not for me to get wrapped up in hearsay and people who aren’t at

games just by them looking at the leagues, as I can go through every single game that we’ve played and list the managers who have come off telling me that we should have got something out of games – classic example was after our recent game with the side now top of the league! You learn from your good times and you learn from the bad times and you don’t take things personally. You’ve got to get your head down and get on with things, and I know long term that we’ll come out the other end. We’ve got to turn the corner and make sure that we have a good December starting today! Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

THE TREATMENT ROOM

THE

TREATMENT

ROOM

In her regular column, first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list...

Welcome to Bayliss Avenue as we welcome Great Wakering Rovers today. It’s been another busy couple of weeks for us with back to back tough midweek and weekend fixtures. In the treatment room it’s been a little quieter, with only the golden oldies making appearances alongside a couple

of the younger lads who picked up knocks, none of which should keep any of the boys out of the squad for today’s game. With a full squad available, we hope to reverse the score line of the away defeat we suffered at the hands of Great Wakering, the game of course which saw Walks hospitalised with his horrific knee injury.

It’s been difficult few weeks but the belief and togetherness in the changing room is one that we truly believe will get us out of the predicament we’re in and back up the table where we belong. Let’s get behind the boys and get back to winning ways. Enjoy today’s game, Carly Payne First-team Physio

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the SCT for today’s Ryman League match against Great Wakering Rovers, I hope they enjoy their brief stay with us. Since our last home defeat at the hands of a well organised, strong Hornchurch outfit who ran out 3-0 winners on the night, we have again been on our travels, but unfortunately both trips to Norwich and Haringey prove fruitless. Our match at Norwich was played on a bumpy playing surface, neither side to be fair produced a great deal of football over the 90 minutes, and Norwich, having taken the lead early in the second half, were the stronger of the two teams, but a scrappy goal from Alex Teniola looked like we would

share the points. However a very late winner for Norwich gave them the three points. On Monday we travelled again this time to Haringey Borough who had on the previous Saturday put seven goals past Romford! We soon found ourselves 2-0 down and had Leon Smith sent off for two yellow cards. Things got a lot worse when almost straight from kick-off Haringey went 3-0 up in the second-half. Credit it where its due we never gave up and another Alex Tenoiola goal gave us a bit of hope and when Harvey Brand scored a very well worked goal it looked we may earn something from the match , but Haringey, who

themselves had a player dismissed, did hold on and claim all three points. Today’s match is very important to us GWRFC are sitting close to the bottom and have recently appointed a new manager , they’ve had a couple of good results of late and will I’m sure prove tough opposition today. Next Tuesday we travel to Waltham Abbey in a re-arranged fixture, before next Saturday visiting local rivals VCD, an away game without having to go near the Dartford Tunnel!! Enjoy the game today and thank you for your support. Dave Joy Club Secretary

GREAT WAKERING ROVERS

If ever a game personified a sixpoint match it’s this afternoon’s clash between Thamesmead Town and Great Wakering Rovers.

Both are languishing in the relegation mire and need an upturn in fortunes sooner rather than later. Great Wakering come into this battle on the back of consecutive defeats to Wroxham and Aveley, while the Mead have lost their last five matches in league action. A victory for Thamesmead would

14

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

close the gap to safety, while a threepoint haul for Great Wakering could see them climb out of the relegation zone.

While the form guide points to a away win, Thamesmead haven’t been playing badly as manager Tommy Warrilow points out, but they need to find consistency in their performances in order to start their ascent to safety. Your support is needed more than ever so cheer the Mead to victory this afternoon.

CLUB HISTORY The club was formed in 1919 by soldiers demobbed after World War I and finding employment in the local brickfields. They first played in the Southend & District League, where they played until 1982, being the league’s most dominant club especially in the 1960s and 1970s.

Great Wakering Rovers were promoted in their place, gaining a place in Isthmian League Division Three for the 1999-00 season.

In 1982 they switched to the newly formed Southend & District Alliance Football League, but this league folded in 1989. At this point the club decided to make the step up to intermediate level and join the Essex Intermediate League.

Further reorganisations saw them switched to the Southern Football League Eastern Division for two seasons, but in 2006 they were switched back to Isthmian League Division One North.

They remained in this league for three seasons, winning the championships of Divisions Three and Two in successive seasons, after the latter of which they successfully applied to join the Essex Senior League. They were league champions in 1994-95 and were league runners-up three times in the subsequent four seasons. On the last of these occasions they finished in second place behind Saffron Walden Town, but as the latter club failed to meet the ground grading requirements for a place in the Isthmian League,

At the first attempt they were promoted to Division Two, then moved to Division One North in 2002 due to league reorganisation.

The 2009-2010 season brought a record number of points for the Rovers at Ryman League level, 64, but towards the end of the season manager Iain O’Connell took over at Ryman Premier side Margate leaving assistant Ryan Wilkinson and physio Cleve Taylor to take over temporary control with 12 games to go. During the close season of 2010, Ryan and Cleve were made joint managers with Danny Heath being promoted from reserve team manager to first team coach to join a new management team.

THE OPPOSITION

During the 2011-2012 season, after a poor run of results, Ryan Wilkinson and Cleve Taylor decided that it was time to move on and resigned, leaving coach Danny Heath as Caretaker Manager. After a short period where new managers were interviewed, Danny Greaves was installed as manager and took charge for his first game on 29th October 2011, but saw his side lose 2-0 away at Leiston. Unfortunately, Danny’s reign wouldn’t last long as his side would lose 6 games in 6, scoring 4 and conceding 21, leaving Danny with no option than to resign. Once again Danny Heath would take over as Caretaker Manager although Dan Trenkel would be installed as the new Player-Manager within two games. Trenkel, a Rovers youth and reserve player, joined the first team for his debut on the 4th April 2001, has played over 300 games for the club and immediately made a start on shoring up the frail defence which had conceded 52 goals before his arrival. Dan Trenkel remains in charge of the Rovers, instilling a new sense of belief into his side.

SIR GEOFF HURST - A LEGEND OF THE BEAUTIFUL GAME...

Continuing our series of ENGLAND 50 celebrating the 50th anniversary of England’s 1966 World Cup win, this week we focus on the birthday boy – the man who’s goals won Alf Ramsey’s side the trophy that July afternoon is 75 years young this week – HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIR GEOFF HURST!

1964 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup 1965. He was sold to Stoke City in 1972 for £80,000 before he finished his Football League career with West Bromwich Albion in 1976. He also played in Ireland for Cork Celtic and in the USA for Seattle Sounders before returning to England to manage nonleague Telford United.

annuls of English and world football for that matter that no one can ever take away, and no one since has come close to matching. Scorer of three of the four goals that won his country the World Cup in their own competition – not bad for a striker who began the competition on the substitute’s bench!

Geoffrey Charles Hurst was born on December 8th 1941 in Ashtonunder-Lyne, Lancashire, and was the eldest of the three children for Charlie and Evelyn. The family then moved to Chelmsford when he was just six years old.

Ron Greenwood offered him a coaching role with the England set-up for the European Championships in Italy in 1980 and the 1982 World Cup in Spain in between an unsuccessful stint as Chelsea manager from 1979 to 1981. He later coached in Kuwait before leaving the game to concentrate on his business commitments.

He finished scoring an impressive 24 goals in 49 England appearances, and as well as playing in the 1966 World Cup, he also played the 1968 European Championship (where England finished third) and 1970 World Cup Finals in Mexico.

He began his professional career with West Ham United, where he scored 242 goals in 500 first team appearances, winning the FA Cup in

ENGLAND 50

Here’s ten things that you might now know about arguably England’s most famous number 10. 1. Dad Charlie was also a pro footballer and played for Bristol Rovers, Oldham Athletic and Rochdale

01

2. Young Geoff was once fined £1 for disturbing the peace after consistently kicking a football into his neighbour’s garden. 3. Not only did he score THAT hat trick in 1966 against West Germany, Hurst’s first and last caps were also both against the same country – in 1966 and 1972 respectively

03

4. The 1966 Final came just five months after his England debut 5. He’s still the only player ever to score a hat-trick in a World Cup Final, but also holds the record jointly for goals scored by an individual in a Final along with two of the all-time greats – Pele and Zinedine Zidane 6. Matt Busby tried to sign Hurst for Manchester United after the 1966 Final, but West Ham turned down the £200,000 offer

07

7. Against Sunderland in 1968, Hurst scored six of West Ham’s goals in an eight nil win. 8. His highest League finish as a player in the old First Division was with Stoke City on 1973 9. He could have played for West Germany as his mothers family were West German

10

10. He played one first-class cricket match for Essex against Lancashire in 1962 – he made 0 not out in the first innings, and was bowled for 0, in the second. He did play 23 times in the Essex Second XI between 1962 and 1964, usually as a wicketkeeper, before “retiring” to concentrate on football There’s only one way that any tribute to Sir Geoff can finish and that’s with arguably the most famous bit of football commentary in history… “And here comes Hurst, he’s got ... some people are on the pitch, they think it’s all over! THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Hi and good luck to Tom and the boys today.

1-6 3-8 2-5 3-8 3-3 2-3 0-8

Last week Gary took our academy lads to Phoenix Sports where they were beaten 8-0 against a very strong side, who are managed by former Maidstone United academy manager Jack Parkinson who currently plays in the National League for Dover Athletic. Our goalkeeper, Nathan Lyken, got injured and young centre back Owen Shirley donned the gloves and although he made some great saves, couldn’t do much to stop the goals flowing in. Gary was pleased with some aspects of our play, but was disappointed in the way our lads dropped their heads and felt sorry for themselves! He said: “ I told the lads that it’s not only about getting the ball down and playing, but also rolling our sleeves up and putting in a shift. To step up to my Under-21 side they must show this side of their game on a weekly basis in both home and away matches.”

I reiterated the point that 100% effort is the minimum requirement and that they needed to earn the right to play. Let’s hope they took this on board starting this week against Millwall Lions in their next match. Over the last two Saturdays we have been holding trials for our apprenticeship scheme we are going to run from Long Lane JFC. The quality of players was mixed but we were pleased that our scheme has attracted players from far and wide. Along with Gary and Steve Rous, we put the lads through their paces with technical drills and small sided games and the trials to found it hard going at times. Overall we were very pleased with the way the players trained and showed how much they wanted a place and maybe there are a few future first teamers to be found in them. Exciting times ahead! WALKER SAYS In the reverse fixture of this afternoon’s game, Mead keeper ANDY WALKER suffered a horrific injury that was diagnosed as a broken knee cap.

The support that Andy received on that fateful day on September, and the backing that he and his family have received in the intervening weeks, has been incredible... Today, Walks would like to express his thanks... “I’d like to “formerly” thank everyone at Great Wakering for their support – both on the day itself and since. The way you guys were with me while we waiting what seemed like forever for the Ambulance to turn up at your ground is something that I’ll never ever forget!” The way you continually chased the whereabouts of the Ambulance; the way that you kept me comfortable during the wait; and actually hanging around with us (me, Craig Carly and Kinchy) until the Paramedics turned up… all things that I will always be grateful for.” “It’s undoubtedly the worst injury that I’ve ever had, and I must admit that I wouldn’t ever want to experience the drive home again as long as I live – and that wasn’t the wife’s driving either!” “I was in so much pain still after the operation that I think I felt every single bump down the A127 – and I can tell you that there’s a “few”! Seriously though, the support that I’ve had

20

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

from everyone has been terrific and I’m pleased to say that I am progressing albeit slowly but it was a bad injury and I know that it will take some time!” “The support and backing that I’ve received in the last ten weeks has been little short of mindblowing. The backing of every single person who has supported my whole family has been something else. Everyone at our club has been amazing – the Chairman has been great as always; the Gaffer and all the boys have been incredible; Carly’s support on the day itself and since has been invaluable; and everyone else at the club have been brilliant – the backing and the friendship that you’ve all shown really is something special!” “But the support that I received at Great Wakering that afternoon is something that will live with me forever!” THANK YOU ALL!

THE UNDER-21S

THE

UNDER-21s Good afternoon everyone,

leave me delighted.

Since my last notes we’ve played twice with the second game being just 48 hours ago when we travelled to face AFC Sudbury.

I thought we were superb on the night – everyone’s attitudes were spot on from the moment we met at the club until the moment we went home.

Printing deadlines means that I’ll have to talk about that one next time. It does though leave me more time to talk about the game before when we made it four wins in five at the expense of Witham Town. It what was easily the side’s best performance of the season as they crushed a side that started the game in second place thanks to a brace apiece by Jeremiah Efe and Ayo Odukoya. Indeed for the final 30 minutes the hosts rarely threatened, as the boys put in a performance that belied their league position and keeps this great run going which sees the boys climbing the league table, and

I think it proved that some of the lads have finally begun to grow up; begin to think like a footballer. The recent form has definitely coincided with the influx of a few new players, maybe it made some of the other lads realise they are not invincible in this squad and that we are always looking to improve the squad. If we can show this same level of passion, hunger and desire every week, I don’t see why we cannot be right up there again come the end of the season. Good luck to Tom and the boys today! THE PASSPORT OPPOSITION SCHEME

INTRODUCING

THE THAMESMEAD TOWN

PASSPORT SCHEME

BISHOP JOHN ROBINSON

WINDRUSH

WELCOME TO THE TTFC PRIMARY PASSPOST! The aim of the scheme is to invite ALL Primary School’s in Thamesmead and in the surrounding area to become a “School Partner”, and for all of their pupils to be offered the “Primary Passport” which will allow every holder FREE entry into any First team League game providing the holder is accompanied by an adult, who will be charged a reduced entrance fee of £5.00 as opposed to the “normal” Match day admission charge of £9.00. The club will provide training sessions at the school within the school curriculum itself or separately, and every “School Partner” will then be invited to be the “School of the Day” at a first team home game of their choice.

HAWKSMOOR

If you’d like your school to get involved, please get the appropriate person to contact MIKE GREEN at commercialttfc@live.co.uk or on 07845 751319 to arrange a meeting… So far we’ve teamed up with Bishop John Robinson Primary School, Foxfield Primary School, Hawksmoor Primary School and Windrush Primary School – will your school be next???
