MANAGER’S COLUMN

STEVE

HOUSHAM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of York City to our home this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on York City in the National League. Our last home game saw us get a great three points against Gateshead which also saw us do the double over them which, for a club our size, is a massive achievement. So credit to the lads for another great battling performance.

a game is set up. Two teams desperate for the points, we will have to be at the top of our game to make sure we pick up the points to keep us climbing up the table. May I take this opportunity to wish

fans have been great and made myself Darryn and all the players welcome here. We will continue to fight and show the spirit you fans deserve and as a group we can live and believe in

We then entered the FA Trophy with high hopes, but came undone at the first attempt. It was a disappointing exit in a game which lacked quality from both sides barring there goal. It was a day to forget. We then moved onto Maidstone United and we required a response from the Trophy game and we got just that. Yes we rode our luck at times, but as always the lads showed great spirit to get a valuable three points to make a very long journey worthwhile. Today is the first of our quick-fire games versus York City and what

you all a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Your fantastic support continues to help us achieve our goal. Since I joined the club you the

this dream season together. Thank you all again and keep believing. Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE VISITORS...

YORK CITY

With confidence high in the North Ferriby camp they can further their climb to safety with a win over York City this afternoon... The Villagers picked up a valuable three point haul last time out against Maidstone United. Goals from Kyle Wootton and Stephen Brogan were the difference in a crucial 2-1 victory away from home. Today they host York City as part of a festive double header with these fixtures big games for both clubs in the context of their respective season. York City sit bottom of the table after picking up 18 points from their 25 games and know they need to address the ever-

growing gap to safety sooner rather than later. The form guide doesn’t read well if you’re a York fan with the club not tasting victory in the league in their past 17 matches. That said they have picked up seven draws in that time - including the 0-0 stalemate last weekend against Torquay United. Both have a tricky set of fixtures after this double header so the two will have targeted points from these clashes and it all points to a cracking afternoon of football here at the Eon Visual Media Stadium.

KYLE LETHEREN

SHAUN ROONEY

York City completed the signing of Blackpool goalkeeper Kyle Letheren in August and the 28-year-old has quickly established himself as the Minstermen’s number one. The 6ft 2in shot-stopper began his career with Swansea City in 2003 before taking in spells with Newport County AFC, Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers and Plymouth Argyle.

The right back began his career with Dundee United in 2010 but after failing to make the break through at Tannadice, he moved to Scottish League Two side Queen’s Park three years later. His 42 appearances at such a young age hadn’t gone unnoticed and after being named in the division’s Team of the Year and voted the club’s Young Player of the Year.

ALEX WHITTLE

MATT FRY

Whittle began his career with Liverpool at the age of six but after spending 11 years with the Merseyside club, he was released in 2011 and went on to join the Glenn Hoddle Academy in Spain and the Nike Football Academy for the 2011/12 campaign. Having signed for Dunfermline Athletic for the 2011/12 season, he converted from a winger into a left back and played 99 times.

Fry began his youth career with Gravesend & Northfleet before moving to Premier League side West Ham United at the age of 11 and signing professional terms in June 2009. In the summer of 2015, the 25-year-old defender penned a oneyear contract with Braintree Town and helped the Essex club to the National League play-offs courtesy of 22 clean sheets.

THE OPPOSITION

ONE TO WATCH

JON PARKIN SIMON HESLOP The 5ft 11in midfielder began his career with Yorkshire rivals Barnsley, progressing through the youth system and signing professional terms in 2005. Months later, the 29-year-old experienced National League football for the first time while on loan at Kidderminster Harriers, and then with Tamworth a year later, before returning to Oakwell in April 2007.

MATTY DIXON The Hull-born midfielder came through the academy of his hometown club City, joining the Tigers as a 12-year-old. His sole senior appearance for the Tigers came in a League Cup victory over Accrington Stanley in August 2015. The 21-year-old joined the Minstermen midway through the 2015/16 season following Ben Godfrey’s move to Norwich City.

YAN KLUKOWSKI

RHYS MURPHY

Klukowski began his career with local club FC Chippenham before moving to non-league outfit Bath City and making the breakthrough at the age of 18, appearing 14 times. In 2005, however, he made the switch to the United States after signing a scholarship with Central Connecticut State University, where he was named North East Conference Rookie of the Year.

Striker Rhys Murphy joined York City from National League rivals Forest Green Rovers at the start of December. A product of the Arsenal Academy, Murphy experienced loan spells with Brentford and Preston North End, before departing permanently for Dutch second division side Telstar in June 2012.

York City completed the signing of experienced striker Jon Parkin from Sky Bet League Two side Newport County AFC in late November. The 34-year-old signed a loan deal until January, before penning a permanent contract until the end of the season, with the option of a further year.

THE GAFFER

GARRY MILLS Gary Mills returned to York City as first-team manager in October in a move which saw Jackie McNamara become the new chief executive of the side. Mills has previously managed the Minstermen from October 2010 to March 2013 and led them to promotion from the Conference to League Two in 2012, a week after they also won the FA Trophy.

CLUB HISTORY

CLUB HISTORY

YORK CITY Formed in 1922, the club were members of the Midland League until their election to The Football League (Division Three North) in 1929 when they replaced Ashington. Their original ground was Fulfordgate and in 1932 they moved to their present home at Bootham Crescent. City had a successful debut season in 1929/30 when they finished sixth but this was to be their highest position until the 1950s. In the years prior to and immediately after the war their record was moderate and in 1949/50 they finished bottom of the Northern Section and had to apply for re-election. In 1952/53 and 1954/55 they finished fourth, the club’s highest position in regionalised football. In 1958 they narrowly failed on goal difference to retain their Third Division status and became founder members of the newly formed Fourth Division. Managed at the time by Sam Bartram, the former Charlton Athletic goalkeeper, City won promotion for the first time in their history in 1958/59 when they finished third in Division Four but the following campaign were immediately relegated. In 1963/64 they again had to apply for re-election but the following year bounced back to win promotion back to the Third with a club record 62 points. Once again they suffered immediate relegation when they finished at the foot of the Third with just 27 points. The following three seasons, they finished in the bottom four of the Fourth and on each occasion had to seek re-election. The 1970s were a remarkable time for the club – they started and finished the decade in the Fourth but in

between spent two seasons in the second tier of English football for the first time in their history. Under manager Tom Johnston they won promotion to the Third in 1970/71. They finished third in 1973/74 to take their place in the Second Division (Championship). It was a memorable campaign in which they only lost six games a club record. In their first season in higher company, City finished a creditable 15th – their highest ever league placing - but the following year (1975/76) were relegated. With Wilf McGuinness, the former Manchester United player and manager, at the helm, City suffered a further demotion back to the Fourth in 1977 and the following season completed an unenviable hat-trick when they had to make their sixth re-election application in 1978. The club finished bottom of the Football League in 1980/81 and so made their seventh and final application for re-election. After finishing seventh in their first season in charge, City were runaway Fourth Division champions in 1983/84 and totalled 101 points and they were labelled “The Team of the Century” as they became the first ever club to reach three figures in a Football League season. The next two campaigns saw City finish in the top eight of Division Three and also twice reach the fifth round of the FA Cup. Following a disappointing 1986/87 campaign, Smith and Busby left for Sunderland and the following season City dropped back into the Fourth. For the next four years the club

languished in the lower reaches of the table and then in 1992/93 they gained their sixth promotion success when via the play-offs. In their first season in the Second Division the club narrowly failed to emulate the achievement of 20 years earlier of reaching the second tier when they lost to Stockport County in the play-off semi-finals. Under the leadership of Alan Little, who had taken over from former boss John Ward in March 1993, City went on to spend a club record six successive seasons out of the basement division of the Football League. They were relegated in May 1999. City struggled to retain their league status in their first three seasons back in Division Three as they battled to avoid the drop. The next campaign with player/manager Chris Brass at the helm, City occupied 10th position in the table early in the new year. However, the club slumped to the bottom and they were relegated to the Conference in 2004 after 75 years membership of the Football League. In their eight seasons out of the Football League, City had mixed fortunes. Twice they narrowly avoided relegation to Conference North (2004/05 and 2008/09) and three times reached the play-offs. In 2010/11 they made a disappointing start to the campaign and in September 2010 Foyle resigned and the next month Gary Mills was appointed, so becoming the 25th manager in the club’s history. STANDS Regular columnist Sam Shepherd takes a look at the recent trials and tribulations of North Ferriby... I would like to start by saying I hope everyone involved at North Ferriby United had a fantastic Christmas Day yesterday and let’s hope the celebrations continue for the green and white army today! Since our last home game Ferriby have produced two completely contrasting performances. The first was an abject defeat in the FA Trophy at Alfreton. The game was played in awful weather conditions on a less than perfect pitch and it was perhaps not

Ryan Wilson picked up the ball around 25 yards out and unleashed an excellent low shot into the bottom left hand corner giving Rory Watson no chance. Ferriby tried to get back into the game, but it was just one of those days and they couldn’t find the all-important goal. This meant Ferriby fell at the first hurdle in the FA Trophy for the second season running which was certainly disappointing. Last Saturday the Villagers faced a

his first goal for the Villagers when he rose highest to head home from an exquisite Reece Thompson cross. Hopefully this is the spark the Scunthorpe loanee needs to go on a scoring spree. The second half was not as good from Ferriby and they seemed to grow tired as the game wore on. Towards the end of the game they were hanging on slightly and were saved by the linesman’s flag on more than one occasion, but they held on for a vital win. Today we face the first of two games against York over the festive period. Ferriby now sit three points and two places above York, who would have seen that coming a few years ago?

surprising that the lower league side coped with the conditions better. The game lacked any real quality and when Ferriby did create some half chances they failed to take them. The game was won with the one real piece of quality in the game. 22

440 mile round trip to Maidstone. They set off in the early morning, but they didn’t lack any energy when the game kicked off. They dominated the first half and were deservedly 2-0 up before the 40th minute. Kyle Wootton registered

A win today could see Steve Housham toasting his side getting out of the relegation zone in time to welcome in 2017. I’m sure the Ferriby faithful would join him in raising a glass to that. Enjoy the game! Sam
