ISSUE 15 Welcome
Welcome to PUDSEY NIGHT at Princes Park… First the “house-keeping” as we bid a good evening everyone, and for the second time this season, we welcome the players, supporters and officials of Phoenix Sports to Princes Park – this time with league points at stake which both sides could really use as the run in to the Festive Period begins… Throughout this evening, we’ll be looking to raise funds for the nations favourite Teddy Bear… Yes, it’s that time of year again as Pudsey Bear hits our screens and raises money for the needy children of this country – so please give generously when a collecting bucket is waved under your nose this evening!
Thank you for your help and please give as generously as you can… So, what’s in tonight’s programme? We’ve the story of Mead’s road win at Herne Bay last week; we talk to OB after Saturday’s FA Trophy exit to the Met Police and the latest club news in Mead Matters… We’re back here in Velocity Trophy action next Wednesday when we welcome AFC Sudbury – see you then… Cheers Greenie

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN
May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our neighbours Phoenix Sports FC to Princes Park the club’s new home for the next five years on this cold Wednesday evening, and after enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe short journey home. Well here we are back in league action after being knocked out of the FA Trophy on Saturday against Bostik Premier Team Metropolitan Police It was a game I thought we had the opportunity to win on many occasions, and to those independent supporters that joined us on Saturday who informed me that you would not have thought we were playing a team at the top of a division above us. And in my opinion an error by players that should know better allowed our opposition to score against the run of the game. It also my opinion that all the senior players within the squad take the time to look at their own game rather than not taking responsibility as well as giving full support to those younger members of the squad, if this happens maybe we will have consistency on the pitch rather than us wondering what team is going to turn up for the game. Now that we are out of the FA competitions, we must get down to the real business the league - this is the bread and butter of the season. We all had our own aspirations at the start of the season of what we wanted to achieve both in the cups and in the league. Whatever money you win in the FA Cups is a benefit and I am very
WWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG
pleased with what we have earned although, as I have said before, had we taken our chances in both the FA Cup and the FA Trophy how far further could we have gone and what could we have earnt? But that is a dream we must now deal with the facts. Here we are in 12th position with 24 points from 15 games with clubs around us having played 16 or 17, so we must make the most of the games in hand. Tommy has managed to bring in some fresh faces to strengthen the squad suffering slightly from injuries to key personnel and subsequent suspensions so we shall probably see a changed team sheet, but whoever plays I know that they will all give their all for the club. Well here we are in the month of November and our academy term draws to an end, the academy is run out of Long Lane and has certainly been an eye opener to both Ian and myself. We are in the process of arranging a 12-week bolt-on to the existing course We are in the process of arranging a 12-week bolt on to the existing course, so the apprentices can finish their season with us, continuing to represent the club and it also, more importantly, gives them the opportunity to get extra qualifications before they do eventually move on. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all those Dartford supporters that join us on matchday when their team is playing away and taking advantage of our Mead Card initiative, it’s not bad gaining entrance to our matches for £5 and over 65s for only £2-50, remember telling all your friends you can enjoy an afternoon or evening watching TTFC. I would also like to thank those 17 supporters that travelled to Herne Bay last Tuesday evening and I hope you were rewarded by the win coming away on the back of a 3-2 win, and I hope the road works causing the M2 to be closed after the match did not take the glow if the win. I am advised by the squad and first-team manager it was a nightmare getting home especially as Tommy had left his car at the Sittingbourne services, luckily Ian was driving me and we diverted through to Ashford and travelled up the M20. I enjoyed meeting a couple of Maidstone supporters that allowed me to talk about old times, so I truly enjoyed the whole experience. Now let’s enjoy a cold Wednesday evening hopefully of good football and here’s hoping for three points, but I am sure Phoenix will have other ideas. Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGEMENT Good evening everyone and a warm welcome to Phoenix Sports for tonight’s Bostik League South match. Good evening everyone… We’re looking forward to getting a game in so quickly after the disappointment of our FA Trophy exit at the weekend. I didn’t think that we were at our greatest in front of goal – that said we gave a team who are second in the higher division a real scare, and if I’m honest, I think we could have easily got a draw. But it wasn’t to be, and we wish the Police the best of luck in the next round and beyond. We’ve had a couple of new faces recently. Danny Parrish is someone who we’ve known about for a couple of months through Adam Flanagan – the Concord boss, who’s an old teammate of mine from the time we both played here for Dartford. Flan told us that he didn’t think Danny was quite ready yet for the level they’re at at Concord –
WWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG
he’s a young lad who’s come in; his feet are unbelievable; he’s a terrific goalscorer who will score goals – I’ve said to him to bide his time, keep working hard and the goals will come. He wants to work and he wants to learn, which for a coach is brilliant! If Danny’s learning you’ve just got to Google Richard Pacquette to see what a quality CV he’s got – he’s been a pro; he’s done the non-league; he’s a goalscorer; he works hard; he’s a likeable lad who everyone speaks highly of him and we’re really fortunate to have got his signature and his services as he’s not local – he travels to get to Princes and to play for Thamesmead. Two signings then that will hopefully keep us moving in the right direction! We’ve two difficult games ahead of us this week starting tonight against a side who will know us inside out.
there before his recent departure, so we may well be facing a few new faces tonight, but we’ll just have to be ready to face whoever is on the team sheet. Then on Saturday, the games don’t get much bigger as we head for Lewes, who at this level are a huge club with a good squad and a good manager who are going to be organised and so if we can get something there it’d be fantastic against a side many tipped to win the league but who knows. We of course knocked them out of the FA Cup and they won’t be happy with that, but it proves that on our day we can and have beaten the supposed best sides in the league… So keep believing and keep backing the boys – your support is key! Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Phoenix Sports in the Bostik League South.
It was a very frustrating loss for the team on Saturday. With some changes to the line-up due to injury we had an initial 10 or 15 minutes of unsettled play.

to get the goal back. Their keeper made a great save from Tom, but that’s as close as we got. A very frustrating result against the run of play against the side second in the league above so maybe… Anyway, back to the day job tonight and hopefully some pints to get us going again against a side we know very well. Forget a week - four days can make a massive difference in football! On Saturday, the Mead turned in one of their most frustratingly desperate performances in the Warrilow era as they drew a blank on Walton Casuals artificial surface, but yet here on the Kent coast, virtually the same team turned in a performance that was for an hour brilliant as it was scintillating whilst the last half hour displayed a top drawer battling quality as ten men secured three deserved point for their first sixty minutes display! And the unlikely scoring hero was full back Harvey Brand who’s two goals in the first half gave the Mead the platform after Paul Vines’ early penalty to secure the win and only a very late second half flag denied the Mead full back a hat-trick just before the hour with the score at 3-1 in the visitors favour. Scott Kinch was then shown a straight red card meaning the Mead had half an hour to play a man down, and after the home side pulled a second goal back, there was optimism amongst the locals that a point could be achieved. But the reckoned without the Mead’s resilience and outstanding defence led by skipper Leon Smith and Joe Denny and the points would be heading back up the M2/A2 corridor.
PAGE 10
The evening off the pitch didn’t start too well as roadworks delayed the Mead’s arrival - not that you’d have known as within seven minutes, the visitors were in front. Danny Parrish was floored in the box by home keeper Hunter - who was perhaps fortunate to stay on the pitch - and Vinesy stroked home the spot-kick. The lead was doubled on 13 minutes when Harvey got on the end of fine driven ball into the box from Bode Anidugbe, and despite the attentions of two defenders and the keeper still managed to get his foot to the ball to steer it into the net. To say the home side’s way back into the game was fortunate was the understatement of the night as a shot from Carlton which was heading wide hit Cox on the back of the head and apologetically looped into the opposite corner to Lewis Carey as the Mead stopper had moved to shepherd the original shot wide. The Mead though were not to be denied and Harvey got on the end of Tom O’Connor’s exquisite cross to volley home the third before the half hour. And with Vinesy and Danny pulling the home defence all over Winches Field, you felt that a fourth was just a matter of time. Danny almost provided it just before the break only for Hunter to save well

before Laurent Mendy’s header from the corner was headed off of the line! The second period began with the Mead still well on top, and Laurent was unlucky to get the ball stuck under his feet after another great ball in from Tom before Harvey was denied the match-ball as he raced onto yet another Tom through ball. Then the game turned as Kinchy was shown a straight red card which gave Herne Bay hope that they didn’t previously have - hope that grew almost immediately as Rumbol reduced the arrears from a corner with twenty minutes left. The Mead goal then endured an incredible let off as the ball fizzed across the face of goal in an amazing sequence that fortunately saw no-one in blue on hand to take advantage! To their credit the ten men kept asking questions with Danny looking lively up front, and it was the young Mead striker who fired narrowly wide in the Mead’s next attack before being taken out by a clumsy tackle which incredibly the match official didn’t see as a foul in the box! The home side huffed and puffed trying to force an equaliser that thankfully didn’t come and the Mead headed home with three deserved points. by Mike Green

METROPOLITAN POLICE Macklin (48)
And so, another FA Trophy campaign comes to an end without the Mead still not getting past the Third Qualifying Round. But the result of this contest will only tell half the story as the Police side arrived second in the BOSTIK Premier Division winning nine of their previous twelve matches and with just one reverse since opening day. With all that in opposition there was nothing between the two sides almost for the whole ninety minutes - both forward lines were busy; both midfielders were probing and both defences were outstanding - and it was clear that one mistake could prove the difference and sadly it was the Mead who made it - at the start of the second half - when Mummery fed in Macklin to score the game’s only goal. It was tough on the Mead, but another step on the learning curve of this side and with some real challenging League games ahead in the coming weeks, there are some intriguing times ahead at Princes. But sadly, it won’t for this season include another FA Trophy tie... Real chances were at a

premium throughout what became a fascinating contest with the clearest in the first half falling to Police defender Robinson who shot across the face of the Mead goal after the ball ricocheted to him in the six-yard box before Danny Parrish raced onto a long clearance from Lewis Carey and picked out the late arriving Tom O’Connor into the box. Sadly, for Tom, his side footed effort was superbly turned aside by Police keeper Williams and the chance was gone. Ellis Green was then unfortunate to see an angled pile driver flick off the top of the head of a defender and flash behind for a corner. The second half began with the decisive moment of the game - the Mead defence

didn’t clear, and Mummery had the time to roll the ball into the path of Macklin who drilled the ball past Lewis and into the net. Despite the constant prodding and probing’s of Tom in the middle of the park, the home side just couldn’t find a way through. Not even the introduction of Raphael Duyile or new signing Richard Pacquette was able to alter the result and so it’s the Police side who take their place in the Third Qualifying Round draw on Monday morning, whilst the Mead look forward to the derby with Phoenix Sports at Princes on Wednesday night and will look to get back to winning ways against their local rivals. by Mike Green

PHOENIX SPORTS
CLUB HISTORY Formed in 1935, Phoenix Sports Club originally started out as St. Johns Welling, later changing its name to Lakeside, before renaming to Phoenix following the Second World War as it was seen to rise from the ashes of the previous two clubs amidst the destruction caused by the blitz. Over the years the club has played at various locations in the local area, including Danson Park until 1950 when the local council offered them a piece of waste land in Mayplace Road East, Bexleyheath. Over time it evolved into the ground that we all know now as The Club. After entering various leagues, including the Sidcup League, Kent Amateur League and the Dartford League, the club settled in the Kent County League Division One West, finishing as runners up twice in the 1950’s and once in the 70’s. Due to financial difficulties, Phoenix were forced to form a Limited Company and adopt the name PHOENIX SPORTS CLUB In the 1986/7 season, the club entered the Spartan League and competed there for six seasons. They then returned to the Kent County League - Division One West. In 1999/2000 we won the league, gaining promotion to the Premier Division, however after two relegations ended up in Division Two West, finally returning to the first division in 2004/05, and then back to the Premier Division in 2007/08. Over the years various honours have come our way, but unfortunately records are fairly sparse. However, we have won the Hospitals Charity Cup Division 1 twice in recent seasons. In recent years, we have seen a steady improvement in the standard
of senior football. These changes resulted in the first team winning the Kent County Football League Division Two title, The West Kent Challenge Shield, The Hospitals Charity Cup and the Kent Junior Cup, in the 2004/05 season. The team maintained steady progress to win the Division One Championship and promotion to the Premier Division, and also the West Kent Challenge Shield and Hospitals Chairty Cup again, followed by a win in the KVFA Intermediate Challenge Shield. After three seasons in the Premier Division, the first team became founder members of the Kent Invicta League at step 6 of the National League System (Step 10 of the English Football League System) – the highest level of football the club has ever played at. We went on to finish runners up, missing out by only two points to eventual champions Bly Spartans as well as reaching the League Cup Final, again losing out. The reserves also had a good season that year, winning Division Two of the Kent Hurliman League and were finalists in the Kent Intermediate Cup. This past season our third senior team (The A Team) gained entry into the Kent County League, winning Reserve Division West and reaching the final of the KCFA Junior Cup group A and the Hospitals Charity Cup. Unfortunately, the 1st team and Reserve team Management both decided to resign for personal reasons at the end of season 20112012. After an exhaustive process we appointed Steve O’Boyle and Tony Beckingham as Joint 1st Team Managers, and John Hope as Manager for the Reserves assisted by Brian Magenis and John Barry.
After a successful first campaign under the new management structure and after losing only two league games all season, Phoenix won the Kent Invicta league and gained promotion to the Kent League to play at step 5 of the National League System and finished in sixth place in our inaugural season. We aspired to a higher finish, hoping for maybe 4th spot, for the next season. We had a very good start to the season but unfortunately lost in our first ever appearance in the FA Cup. Losing on penalties after a replay. In the League we managed to lose only 1 game all season and accumulating 30 clean sheets. Due to these performances we managed to win the League quite comfortably in the end, although there were a few sticky moments. These achievements meant that we also had to work miracles off the pitch, but we eventually managed to get all the necessary works done in time to gain D Grade and promotion to The Ryman League North Division. After a long 1st season, we managed to finish in 14th place of 24 teams. This can only be classed as a great result for the club. We now try to push on for another good season and hopefully a higher place finish, although we will not now be an unknown quantity. After another hard season where we were in and around the play off places for most of it, we were cursed by Boyley winning the Manager of the Month award for March, and managed to go the rest of the season without picking up another point, and finishing in 8th place. We were also the subject of a lateral movement at the season end, so will be competing in the newly sponsored Bostik League South.
