THE MANAGER

TERRY

SPILLANE

I’d like to welcome you all to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome Maldon & Tiptree to our home ground. Good evening everyone and welcome to the SCT... In our last game here at the SCT, we came up against league leaders Sudbury and lost 1-2. Our home record has been superb this season and this was only our 3rd league defeat at Bayliss Ave. I thought we more than matched them throughout and maybe a draw would’ve been a fair result. We started brightly and had 2 good goal attempts to go in front but as often happens at this level if you do not take your chances we fell behind when Sudbury scored on the 35 minute mark. The second-half started with Sudbury on top possession wise, but we gradually got a foothold in the game and were putting a lot of pressure on the Sudbury

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

defence. Twenty minutes from time, we had Farai sent off for a deliberate foul as the Sudbury forward used his experience and got himself “across” Farais run and went down to earn his team a penalty. The very same player picked himself up and duly out the ball in the bet. 0-2. Theo gave us a lifeline as he scored a good goal five minutes later and we had Sudbury on the rack but try as we may the goal just would not come. On Tuesday we came up against one of my previous clubs where I have very fond memories of a great season there as my team reached the second round of the FA Cup. We got off to a great start by

going 2-0 up through Jack and Theo after only ten minutes and it really did look as it could be a rout!! But credit to Redbridge as they came back to 2-2 with two quick fire goals from young Charlie Portway. After a couple of tactical changes at half time, we once again took control of the game in the second-half and on 55 mins the ever impressive Theo put us back in front 3-2. We were in control of the game although it took us until the 85min to see Jack Barry power another header into the net from six yards out to put us 4-2 in front. Redbridge scored again to make the score 4-3 but we saw the

game out to earn another three points.

justice was done - but we were still a man down.

Then on Saturday, we travelled to Wroxham who had a new manager on show. We warned the players of the dangers we faced in the game as a new manager coming in always inspires the players when he takes over.

We obviously had to adjust & decided 4-4-1 was the way forward. But unfortunately a lack of concentration let their winger get a decent cross into our box where an unmarked player powered his header into the net to put them 1-0 up.

Once again we started quite brightly, but the officials decisions left a lot to be desired! After only around 20 minutes, we had Farai sent off for an alleged elbow which only the referee saw!!

Again we changed shape and replaced Duncs and Vinesy with Tyrus and Lee. The game opened up as you’d expect but chances were at a premium. Five minutes from time, we got the closest to getting a point when Theo wriggled his way past three challenges to get his shot off but

Walks though saved the resulting penalty, so you could say that

it cannoned off the post to keep Wroxham in front on the day. We had a very good penalty claim denied us as the game came to a close. Tonight we play another of my old clubs and I’m expecting another tough game as the resources they have at their disposal are the envy of the league. I hope as usual you get behind the boys this evening and help us to get a win and some very valuable points on board. Come on you Mead! Terry Spillane First-team Manager

Good evening all and welcome to Bayliss Avenue where our boys tonight take on Maldon and Tiptree. After a tough week with two loses against Sudbury and Wroxham retrospectively and an away win at Redbridge we look to get back to winning ways against our visitors

tonight and keep our play-off dreams alive. In injury news the treatment rooms has been empty again this week much to the delight of the management meaning again a full squad for selection. I‘d like to also take this opportunity to wish our club

THE OPPOSITION

MALDON & TIPTREE

CLUB INFO Nickname: The Jammers Founded: 1946 Ground: Park Drive Chairman: Ed Garty Manager: Steve Ball Last Season: 19th

Sitting side by side in the table Thamesmead Town know they need to get back to winning ways if they are to make a late push for the Play-offs when Maldon & Tiptree come to town. That said this won’t be an easy game by any stretch of the imagination. Maldon won all of their fixtures in January and have only tasted defeat the once in February against AFC Sudbury. The club bounced back from their first defeat in eight in all competitions to narrowly win 1-0 against Brightlingsea Regent. A win for the Mead could see them climb as high as 8th whilst three points for Maldon would see them close the gap on Thamesmead to just a point.

THE OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY The re-establishment of normal life after the war saw the formation of Maldon Town FC in 1946, with their HQ at the Rose and Crown in the High Street and home venue was at Sadd’s Ground on the cause-way. The Mid-Essex League Div 2 gave them their first league trophy in that season, when they gained the runners-up spot. Now transferring their home ground to the Promenade Park and joining the North-Essex League, they once again achieved runners-up spot in this league and were also runners-up in the Essex Junior Cup. Returning to the MidEssex Premier Division saw them lift the league title in consecutive seasons, as well as the league cup in 1949/50 Season. Success now followed them to their newly acquired Wallace Binder ground in Fambridge Road, joining the Essex and Suffolk Border League, that season the runners up spot was gained. The league winning team of 1965/66 gained them senior status, and they joined the Eastern Counties League in 1966. After six years in this league they joined the Essex Senior League, picking up the league title in 1984/85 and almost completing the double when beaten in the final of the league cup by Chelmsford City Reserves. Moving to the new ground in Park Drive in 1994, and crossing the pyramid structure to return to the Eastern Counties League in 1996 under the continued management of Ben Embery and his assistant Steve Jackson, the pair were very unfortunate not to obtain promotion in their first season in the Jewson League (ECL). Our second year in the League proved to be a

different story, with the team gaining promotion to the Premier Division. In our first year in the Premier League we finished a creditable 13th position and improved that to eighth in the second year. We now entered a new era with a new manager Colin Wallington, in our third year in the Premier League we finished fourth and now looked good to progress further. After 14 years as chairman Bob Large decided to stand down has he felt he had taken the Club as far has he can. The new chairman Mike Kirkham stated that he hoped to take the Club to the next step up the ladder in a few years. Season 2005/06 after two promotion seasons we found ourselves in the Ryman Premier. This found us fighting relegation for the whole season, with our fate still being in our own hands right up to the last 3 games of the season. Season 2006/07 saw us play in the Ryman North Division, where we finished fourth, and due to the Club not applying for pro-motion, the club were excluded from the play offs. The 2007/08 season started with a new Manager Russell Tanner with Dean Parrott as his assistant. The club made several major signings during the close season but these players moved on when Clubs from a higher level came in for them. In September 2008 Stuart Nethercott was promoted from his position of Assistant Manager to Caretaker Manager (and ultimately to permanent Manager) following the departure of

Russell Tanner. Stuart’s reign lasted a year, as he was replaced by former Manager Colin Wallington who hoped to bring back some of the good times to Maldon Town. Season 2009/10 saw mixed fortunes on the pitch, due in part to the large turnover of players. Following the retirement of Manager, Colin Wallington, assistants, Brad King and Glen Knight were promoted to Joint Managers and put in charge of the Club which as a sign of the likely future amalgamation started the season under the new name of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club. Season 2010/2011 saw the new club placed in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season. Despite another high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was frustrating for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. Following King and Knight’s departure during last season Mike Flanagan came in and took on the caretaker role and steered the club to a respectable mid-table position. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager. After a fantastic start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-off. Disappointment came in the Final when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who won on penalties. THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Maldon & Tiptree

TYRUS GORDON-YOUNG CELEBRATES PUTTING THE MEAD AHEAD AGAINST PHOENIX SPORTS

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Welcome to everyone for our Ryman League home match against Maldon & Tiptree, I hope that the player s, officials and supporters enjoy their brief stay at SCT. Tonight’s article cannot start without mentioning that Maldon are manager Terry Spillane’s old club so football being football I am sure he will want to get a victory against them tonight. Last Saturday saw us entertain league leaders and now favourites to go on and win the title AFC Sudbury.

They were a strong well organised team, a mixture of ability and work rate always a difficult opponent a very good centre forward and although in my opinion they were not an outstanding side they area team on a roll and will be difficult to beat in the coming weeks. We did lose the match 2-1, an honest result although we had spells we never really deserved anything from the match and from it we moved onto Redbridge last Tuesday. Another one of Terry’s former clubs, on a very difficult playing surface we managed in the end

to record a 4-3 victory 2 goals apiece for Jack Barry and Theo in a scrappy match that could have ended 7 all!! But it was however a massive three points, Redbridge is a difficult place to go they worked hard and were a big strong side. A special mention to Charlie Himbury who made his debut in this match and did well pulling off a blinding save at the death to earn us the three points. Enjoy this evening’s game. AFC SUDBURY

Fairweather-Johnson (76)

Baker (34), Parker (65 pen)

Saturday 6th February 2016 | Ryman League Division One North | Sporting Club Thamesmead | Att: 102

AFC Sudbury maintained their ever increasing strangle hold at the top of Ryman One North with a hard fought three points at the SCT condemning the Mead to just our second home defeat since the end of August. The day started badly for the home side when top scorer Tyrus Gordon-Young was ruled out as a result of his leaving the game at Romford seven days previously unconscious on a stretcher. Just as with the Mead’s trip to Sudbury back in November, an increasing wind caused both sides huge problems and made playing any quality football all but impossible. Sadly for the home side, just as in that November game, it was Sudbury who adapted best and in the end claimed the points. For the Mead, it was a day that got progressively worse and was topped by the late dismissal of Farai Hallam as the centre half was penalised as he brought down Sudbury’s Blackwell as he

wriggled clear. The visitors lead at the break courtesy of Baker’s curling left footed shot flew into the corner of the Mead net with Andy Walker both unsighted and motionless. It was tough on the Mead to go in at the break a goal behind as both teams had struggled to come to terms with the conditions with Theo Fairweather Johnson twice going lose. That said however shortly before they scored Sudbury did hit the Mead bar courtesy of Baker’s thumping header after Walks had brilliantly denied Parker. Parker was to gain his revenge on the Mead stopper though midway through an intriguing second-half. Following a melee on the edge of the home box, referee Crowhurst pointed to the spot and Parker duly stepped up and drilled the ball to Walk’s left as the keeper dived to his right. Theo did pull one back for the Mead quarter of an hour from

time – drilling home from the edge of the box – but this time the home side couldn’t recover from a two goal deficit as they had done in each of their previous two outings and the points headed north with the visitors. The afternoon was made even worse for the home side as Farai was sent off in the last ten minutes as he was shown a straight red card as last man, and insult was very nearly added to injury in the dying seconds as Baker thundered a shot off of the Mead’s post, but by then the damage had been done. The Mead now face two teams in the bottom three in their next two outings (Redbridge and Wroxham respectively) knowing that maximum points are now most definitely needed to keep in touch with the race to the Play-offs. REDBRIDGE

THAMESMEAD

Portway (30, 43) Knight (82)

Barry (1, 80), Fairweather-Johnson (5, 83)

Tuesday 9th February 2016 | Ryman League Division One North | Oakside Stadium | Att: 55

Two goals each from Jack Barry and two from Theo FairweatherJohnson eased the Mead to a reasonably comfortable if sticky three points through the Redbridge mud! In the end, the three points were the most important thing for the visitors to return home with from one of Terry’s former club’s, and the boss will be first to admit that this was far from the Mead’s best performance of the season. But in the final analysis, the points keep the Mead within touching distance of the Play-Off places, and that when the side arrived at Oakside Stadium was after all the objective. The Mead were forced into a change in goal when Andy Walker fell ill allowing under 21 keeper Charlie Himbury to make his debut – and an eventful one it was as well! It was a debut that the young man will remember for one stunning save in the final ten minutes which in the final analysis sealed the Mead’s win. That and the debut from the bench at half time of new signing Harrison Carnegie and the performance on paper at least improves all the time! It was a dream start for the Mead as the visitors struck in the opening minute. Unofficially timed at 38

seconds, Jack was on hand to power home the games first corner with a fine header. Theo then fired a shot which thundered off the bar before completing the dream start by driving home the Mead’s second from the edge of the box giving keeper Chafer no chance from the edge of the box. It could have been three moments later when Marc Gorbell’s header produced a tremendous save from the home keeper full length away to his left after the Mead’s central defender powered in another header from yet another great corner from Max Mitchell. The half exploded into controversy just before the half hour when the home side pulled one back when Portway received the ball yards behind the Mead defense, and when the offside flag the striker beat Charlie low at his near post. Despite the protests the goal stood! Vinesy was then denied by both a foul and a post when he got on the end of a fine through ball. Despite having a home defender all over him, the Mead striker managed to poke the ball past the keeper only to see the ball bounce to safety off of the left post. The Mead surely denied a third as the correct result should surely have been either a goal or a spot kick, but not for the first

time during the evening, the officials ruling must be called into question. There was another big question over the home sides equaliser in the half’s closing stages, as once again the home side were given the benefit of a questionable offside ruling as Gent got away down the right before squaring for Portway to net. Harrison’s first significant involvement as a Mead player saw him find Vinesy, who’s shot was well kept out by the keeper only for Theo to try and break the net from a couple of yards out – a real poachers goal. The Mead skipper though was not to be denied as from a deep flag kick, he made space for himself before expertly guiding a looping header into the roof of the net to re-establish the two goal cushion. But yet again the home side responded and substitute Knight was given far too much time and space as he waltzed into the box before drilling home Redbridge’s third. As said previously, three points won and three more points in the Play Off hunt as the Mead on to one of our longest trips of the season to another struggling side Wroxham at the weekend. report by Mike Green THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Maldon & Tiptree

THAMESMEAD

Kelleher (50)

Saturday 13th February 2016 | Ryman League Division One North | Trafford Park | Att: 112

The Mead travelled to Norfolk to face a Wroxham side who had “parked the bus” in frustrating us at the SCT in October in order to gain a point and went into the game with a new manager in the hot seat. And unfortunately for the second successive weekend, the Mead ended up on the wrong end of the scoreline to an East Anglian side and finished with ten men! Whilst the week before, the Mead had been beaten by the League leaders (AFC Sudbury) and had Farai Hallam sent off for conceding a clear penalty, lightening sadly struck again in Norfolk as Hallam received a straight red conceding a penalty. That’s where any similarities end though sadly for the Mead defender as it appeared that only the referee seemed to spot whilst there was jostling waiting for a throw to take place. For the record, Forshaw then saw his spot kick magnificently save by Andy Walker. Sadly for the Mead however, they conceded the match winner right at

the start of the second half as Garrod was given too much time and space down the left to cross and Kelleher was completely unmarked as he powered his header past Walks into to net.

shot after Davey completely missed his kick.

The Mead didn’t learn from a first half incident that saw Garrod strike the right post with a great effort after being too much room, as he raced clear down the right.

Sub Tyrus Gordon-Young was brilliantly denied by a last gasp Sommerfield tackle as he raced clear. Shortly after Theo FairweatherJohnson (who’s flick had released Tyrus) did well down the left before cutting inside and firing in a great shot which beat home keeper pride all ends up only to smack into the right post. And to prove it wasn’t the Mead’s day, the rebound then hit the keeper and span away to safety.

Shortly after Kelleher’s header came the home sides “auditions” for first the Rio 2016 high-jump team and then the 2016 BAFTA’s (the British “Oscars”) as Paul Vines attempted challenge on Garrod saw the home man leap into the air (would have been fine if the Mead man had actually been anywhere near the Wroxham man). Home defender Ramm then had to be helped to him feet after throwing himself to the ground with no player within four yards of his position! Forshaw was then involved in separate moves that could and perhaps should have extended the home side’s advantage. Firstly, a miss-hit cross eluded Walks and bounced off the top of the crossbar; he then crossed from the left only for Walks to brilliantly block Garrod’s

The Mead rallied in the final quarter and were agonisingly close to gaining an unlikely point.

It wasn’t the Mead’s best performance of the season (indeed the game itself wont live long in the memory of anyone who saw it) but the bottom line is it wasn’t helped by some very strange decisions from the officials. TRAVELLER’S TALES

TRAVELLER’S TALES

The travels of a Thamesmead Town away supporter...

Following a surprisingly orgasmic night at Ship Lane in October when the boys convincingly disposed of Thurrock, Saturday’s return journey to face Romford was certainly an away trip with a difference.

and with Jamie in Liverpool sampling the obscure delights of Marine taking on Darlington in the Evo-Stick Northern Premier League, what else to do but enjoy the delights of the well stocked hospitality suite, accompanied by the Chairman among others.

A winter spent mastering control of four wheels saw Farai venture out on his first excursion from South to East London via the “Dartford Pipe”, in search of 3 much needed points as we kept pace with the Play-off pack. Pace seldom displayed in the centre of the Mead defence had Farai completing our arrival well ahead of schedule at 12.45, leaving many of his team mates trailing in his wake.

An enjoyable pre-match burger (recommended) provided some sustenance against a cold wind as our heroes set about the task in hand. A burger in sharp contrast to the cup of hot water thinly disguised as Bovril (not recommended) that was consumed at half-time!!

So, 2 hours to fill before kick-off, 22

Sadly, Mead support was surprisingly thin on the ground as we duly took the spoils, leaving me a lonely figure as I single handedly

applauded our boys off at the end of a frustratingly fluctuating encounter. And it was a lonesome walk back to the Bar where I excitedly awaited the arrival of the Team for a quick post-match celebration. Once concern over Tyrus’ stretcher assisted journey from the battlefield were allayed, we were able to reflect on the progress made on those in front of us in the table. And so another away day comes to a successful conclusion.............. now on to Wroxham next week. COYM!! The Traveller

Greenie

Good evening everyone and welcome back to our visitors from Maldon - we hope you enjoy your evening with us and have a safe trip home! After two postponements (just lie tonight’s game the Draw was made in the Committee Room after our home game with AFC Sudbury on Saturday 6th February. All the sold squares were numbered and then numbered cloak room tickets were placed in the draw pot before the draw itself was then kindly performed made by our “Man of the Match” sponsor ERIKA COOPER, and witnessed by officials for both clubs. Thanks to Erika for drawing the winning tickets which are listed above Congratulations if you have been lucky…

We would like to thank all those who donated prizes – The Morgan Public House, KELME Sports, Richard Brooks Photography, Mr N Johnson Esq. & Mr P BowdenBrown Esq – and many thanks to everyone who entered. There’s still time for you to sponsor your favourite player for the remainder of the season. Indeed we’re still on the look out for more Match Sponsors between now and the end of April. So if you’re interested in either or just want to back your club, drop me an email at commercialttfc@live.co.uk and I’m sure we can help you!

we’ll be able to use a picture or two of their big day in a future edition of The Mead. Cheers and enjoy the game! Greenie If your company would like to sponsor a forthcoming home game, please see Greenie TODAY or contact him on commercialttfc@live.co.uk or alternatively 07845 751319

Finally from me, can I please pass on my own congratulations to Hoppo and his bride Kellie for their wedding day this coming Thursday. Hopefully THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Maldon & Tiptree

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

10

CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34
