PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of AFC Sudbury to Princes Park the club’s new home for the next five years on this cold Wednesday evening, and after enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe short journey home. Well here we are back in cup action after being away at league leaders Lewis on Saturday; a game that I feel we threw away. At half time we were 2-0 up with goals scored by our two new forwards, then our opponents made a substitution by bringing their top scorer into the game and it only took him minutes to score his first and then in the 94th minute he popped up and scored the equaliser making it a 2-2 draw. I heard comments from our side that at least we got a draw! I am sorry, but that made me very annoyed; it was two points lost as far as I was concerned! In my humble opinion, the only reason we had these two goals scored against us was for the sole reason certain players were not doing their jobs, maybe they think they are too good to listen to their management because I would certainly think that that’s not the way Tommy asks them to play. This is the time that I review the first four months of the season and reflect on how we are achieving, and whether we are on target with what

was originally agreed with the manager in pre-season. And to be totally honest I think personally we are on target, but if you include those game we should have won or drawn but did not for whatever reason, we would be in the play offs, our original target for the season rather than in the 10th position we hold at this time in the league. I then think, had we gained these extra points, we would not be under any pressure to perform just to play the good football we know as a squad we can. So now we make things harder for ourselves, so let’s hope we all learn because be assured I will not in the future be satisfied with a display as I witnessed at Lewes last Saturday afternoon, because I believe with the type of players we have in our squad a good mix of seniors and young players together they should be a dominant team to play against as they showed us within the first 57 minutes of the game on Saturday. Well here we are in the month of November and our academy term draws to an end; the academy is run out of Long Lane

and has certainly been an eye opener to both Ian and myself. I would like to once again take this opportunity to thank all those Dartford supporters that join us on matchday when their team is playing away and taking advantage of our Mead Card initiative, it’s not bad gaining entrance to our matches for £5 and over 65s for only £2-50, remember telling all your friends you can enjoy an afternoon or evening watching TTFC with those supporters that followed us from Thamesmead Town. I am at this time looking for a commercial person to join our team, it could be a full-time position or part time, but will totally depend on the type of person applying for this position, it is a type of job that the right person can develop the role for the benefit of all parties, so if you interested or know someone that would like to apply please make contact directly with myself and I will send a full job description. Simply get in touch with me at directorttfc@live.co.uk Now let’s all enjoy the game... Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

ALEX O’BRIEN

THE MANAGEMENT Good evening everyone and a warm welcome to AFC Sudbury for tonight’s cup match. If we’d have said going into the last week that we’d beat a Kent rival and beat them well and then get a point at the league leaders on the Saturday and not be beaten in both game, I call that a good week. Put into that the lad who scored the Lewes goals probably gets what four or five of our players’ score, and that must put it into perspective and the way that we stayed in there and battled was fantastic and we got a great point. Everyone was on the floor at the final whistle – of course we were – but you’ve got to remember that we didn’t get beaten and that’s just one massive positive to take from the game. Another one is that we’ve given Lewes, one of the favourites for the league, a WWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG

really good go and we’ve got them again back here after Christmas. So why can’t we beat them again just as we did in the FA Cup? But what frustrates me is that we must perform like that week in week out against the teams around us. The lads have shown us this week that their performance levels and their fitness levels and work ethic is through the roof and long may that continue. We’ll go into tonight knowing that AFC will be a good side – they always are! They’ll be strong, they’ll be organised, and I fully expect them to be the same tonight. It’s a cup game – it’ll be a toss of a coin and hopefully we can stay involved already knowing that we’ve a home tie in the

last sixteen. When Tom and I looked at the team tonight, I don’t think it’ll take too long as we’re so short of numbers – we’re fighting above our weight and are doing so well and working so hard from the Chair, Greenie, Doc with the academy, the kit men, the physio down through to the players – we’re all trying so hard, we really, really are! It’ll get no different on Saturday when Carshalton come calling – another really, tough league game against another really tough side – but that’s all after tonight! Thanks as ever for your support, Alex O’Brien First-Team Assistant Manager

LEON SMITH THE CAPTAIN

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on AFC Sudbury in the Velocity Trophy. Good evening all as we welcome old friends from the North Division here to Princes for another cup night under the lights. We knew it would be a tough challenge going down to Lewes at the weekend. They had been on a good run – Greenie tells me they’d lost just once since we beat them in the FA Cup – but we were really, really up for the game and took it to them from the off. We started well and gained a 2-0 lead going into half-time care of Pacq and Danny – we had Proudly sponsored by... even more chances and it could have been even more.

they did just that and even though they pulled one back they didn’t really bother us until the closing stages. We were always in the game and creating chances and if we’d have just taken one of them, as in the dying seconds they got a scrappy goal from a corner to make it 2-2. It was a brilliant point for us, but it should have been three, so we’ll go into tonight with possibly the league pressure off our shoulders and look to progress in another competition before we go again in the league on Saturday… Thanks as always for your support. 2 THAMESMEAD TOWN Pacquette (10), Parrish (42)

A terrific point gained or two lost at the end of a titanic battle in Sussex with the BOSTIK South pace setters? That’s the bottom line of the Mead’s Saturday afternoon by the sea… A cold bleak damp Saturday didn’t help the mood as the Mead were undone by the leaders super sub Jonte Smith who scored with almost his first touch and then deep into stoppage time to grab the leaders a point that on the balance of play they probably deserved. But that should take nothing away from a fantastic Mead performance and hugely deserved point which extends the recent league run to just one defeat in eight games. Yet after taking a fully deserved two goal lead through Richard Pacquette and Danny Parish, to concede an equaliser so late in the contest was tough to take. But the point that the Mead did return home with means that it’s now just four points away from the play-off places still with games in hand… The two sides of course have met already this season, with Tommy leading the boys to a 3-0 win in the FA Cup in August. Since then though Lewes

PAGE 10

THAMESMEAD TOWN V AFC SUDBURY

have been almost unbeatable – winning 12 and drawing three of their 16 games since – which highlighted just how good a start the Mead made on the day as the visitors duly surprised the home side when Pacquette drilled home on ten minutes and took the game to the leaders to such an extent that it took Lewes 27 minutes to have a shot that threatened Lewis Carey in the visitors goal. Pacquette was then denied a second after a great run from Raph Duyile which saw Duyile’s shot cannon off the keeper and the Mead’s number ten saw the rebound scrambled off the line. It delayed the inevitable though just a couple of minutes as Bode Anidugbe powered through, aided by a terrific advantage from the match official – one of his “better” moments on the day – and via a great ball from Tom O’Connor, the ball fell to Parish who doubled the lead with a drive into the corner. The Mead almost expected a comeback from the home side and to be fair that’s exactly what they got, but it was inspired by substitute Smith who pulled one back almost immediately after coming on. Medlock was then denied by a fabulous block from Carey before the Mead keeper reacted smartly to tip over Smith’s diving header and then shortly after Coppola

Saturday 18th November The Dripping Pan Attendance: 546 Bostik League South

fired wise with the goal at his mercy. The Mead then came agonisingly close to sealing the game when substitute Paul Vines brilliantly worked half a yard for himself only to be denied by a desperate last-gasp challenge, before Jake McIntyre pulled off arguably the tackle of the day just as Smith looked as though he’d worked room for himself as the 90 minutes expired. Sadly, though for the Mead, Smith was to have the last laugh as from the resulting corner, he beat Lewis with a low shot into the net to spark wild scenes amongst the home fans. For the Mead, it was tough to take yes; but to get that close to beating the League leaders at kick off for a second time this season – remember the Mead dumped Lewes out of the FA Cup in August – really illustrates the strides that this group of players (today dressed in blue and white stripes) have taken as they move to within four points of the top six still with a game in hand. AFC SUDBURY

CLUB HISTORY AFC Sudbury was formed on Tuesday 1st June 1999 from the amalgamation of Sudbury Town and Sudbury Wanderers. In their first season 1999/00, the club finished third in the Jewson Premier League and the Reserve side won the Premier League title in the Essex and Suffolk Border League. In 2000/01 the club powered their way to the Jewson League Premier title, reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup and the Reserves won the Essex and Suffolk Border League Cup. In 2001/02 the club retained the Jewson League title and reached the Semi-Final of the FA Vase and won the Suffolk Premier Cup. In 2002/03 AFC Sudbury retained the Jewson Premier League Premier and won the Suffolk Premier Cup. They also reached the final of the FA Vase being beaten 2-1 by Brigg Town. After this manager Keith Martin stepped down and was replaced by the Reserve Team Manager Gary Harvey. 2003/04 saw a fourth successive Ridgeons League title and the Suffolk Premier Cup retained. The FA Vase Final was reached, again it was lost 2-0 against Winchester City. In 2004/05 the club were again successful, they won their fifth consecutive Ridgeons Premier League title (a record for the Eastern Counties League), and for third year in succession reached the final of the FA Vase another record, unfortunately they again lost 3-2 to Didcot Town. In 2005/06 the club continued in the Ridgeons Premier League and finished third, the Ridgeons League Cup was won for the first time and the fifth round of the FA Vase reached.

Season 2006/07 saw the club accept promotion to Step 4, and the new Ryman League Division One North. The club changed managers with Mark Morsley taking over. The play-off finals were reached where they lost in a penalty shoot out. The 2007/08 season was a nearly season. The club was still managed by Morsley aided by assistant Nicky Smith and coach Paul Skingley. The club got to the final of the Ryman League Cup but lost on penalties. They again reached the play-off finals but lost in the semi-finals. In May 2008 Morsley resigned and Nicky Smith was appointed manager with Chris Tracey as his assistant. A few days later the club were moved from the Ryman League and placed in the Southern League Midland Division for season 2008/09. The 2009/10 season saw Smith and Chris Tracey still in charge, and still in the Southern League. AFC lost in the First Qualifying Round of both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. In the Southern League Cup it was a Second Round exit and it was the same round in the Suffolk Premier Cup. AFC finished the season in 14th position in the league. Smith and Tracey remained in charge of the first team for 2010/11 and Ian Manby the second team, with a new A Team started and played in the Colchester and North Essex League under Phil Root. The first team ended in seventh place. In the FA Trophy they lost in the First Round Proper. Season 2011/12 saw Smith and Tracey start the season but Smith later resigned and Tracey was put in temporary charge and later appointed permanent manager. In the Ryman League North they finished in eighth place.

The start of season 2012/13 saw Chris Tracey in charge with Barry Lakin at his side, he departed in September and Ian Brown joined as his assistant. Tracey resigned in March 2013 and Michael Shinn and Ian Brown took charge until the end of the season. In May 2013 the club appointed David Batch along with Head Coach Steve Eastaugh as their new management team for 2013/14 and they quickly set about building not only a fresh squad but also the entire structure of the football club. The 2014/15 season saw Batch and Eastaugh start it but leave in December. A new management team of Jamie Godbold and Andy Reynolds took over and led the club to third place and to the play-offs but were unsuccessful in them. For 2015/16 Godbold and Reynolds continued in post with Danny Laws and Dave Cannon in charge of the Res/Academy. The season was an undoubted success with AFC never being out of the top six in Ryman North and they won the Championship on 9th April 2016 ensuring promotion to the Ryman Premier Division. 2016/17 saw the club in the Ryman Premier League for the first time still with Godbold and Reynolds at the helm. It was a disappointing season as the club were relegated for the first time in their history. On 13th May 2017 Godbold and Reynolds were announced as the first team management duo for the 2017/18 season and Danny Potter appointed as goalkeeping coach. On 12th September 2017 Godbold and Reynolds were relieved of their duties with Danny Laws taking over as Caretaker Manager.
