MANAGER’S COLUMN
STEVE
HOUSHAM
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Dagenham & Redbridge to our home this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Dagenham & Redbridge in the National League. First of all welcome and happy new year to you all! Our last home game saw us take on York City in our first of a double Christmas games. The Boxing Day game was a disappointing display. It was a game dictated by the weather and York who played with the wind first half took advantage and scored a scrappy goal.
lads. What made it even better was the turnout by our fans 200 plus! Myself, staff and players can not thank you enough for such a great turnout. Today we take on Dagenham who are chasing a promotion back into the Football League and with John Still, who i see as one of the best
out to strengthen our squad, but at moment we are happy with the players on board who are doing the club so proud. Talking of proud I know I mentioned the fans who travelled to York before, but as a squad we was so proud to see that many at the game. We discussed it before the match
We was happy just to come in a goal down as York dominated with the wind, although we huffed and puffed in the second half we couldn’t find the equaliser – the only winner on the day was the great support from both sets of fans. In a quick turnaround we went to York on New Year’s day looking for a response and a response is what we got, we went with a plan and spoke at lengths how to combat York City’s strengths. The team went out and delivered a professional and disciplined show and came away with three valuable points, it was a superb display by the
managers in this league, we expect a very tough game, but we go into it in good form and spirits. We need to show the same desire as at York to get the points we need. Clubs will also be busy bringing players in and we are still on the look
and we dedicated that result to you the fans. We must all stick together as we enter the second half of the season! Keep the belief! Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE VISITORS...
DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE
North Ferriby bounced back from defeat at the first time of asking and host Dagenham & Redbridge hoping to claim a major scalp... The Villagers suffered a Boxing Day hangover as fellow strugglers York City edged a 1-0 victory, but found the perfect tonic of recovery on New Year’s Day being on the right end of a 1-0 scorelines. 214 Ferriby fans made the journey to Bootham Crescent and were rewarded when former York player Reece Thompson scored the only goal of the game. Today the Villagers host Dagenham & Redbridge, a side who sit joint-fourth in the 4
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme
table. While on paper this would seem a straightforward match for the Daggers their recent form will be of concern. They head to the Eon Visual Media Stadium with one win in their past four matches, but more worrying is that they have shipped in nine goals in that spell. Granted the Villagers will have to be at their best, but will take heart from their own recent showings and hold no fears going into this match.

CLUB HISTORY
VICTORIA ROAD HISTORY
DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE Victoria Road has existed as a football ground since 1917, when the Sterling Works side, whose factory was situated alongside, used it. It was not fully enclosed until the summer of 1955, when Briggs Sports moved out to Rush Green Road, and Dagenham FC moved from the Arena. During that summer they levelled and re-seeded the pitch, and removed the stones from the playing surface. They then extended the banking and the terracing. The only cover was a tiny wooden stand, which was steep and narrow, and had a few rows of seating, on the far side of the ground. The main stand was built that autumn and was opened on 7th January 1956 by JW Bowers who was then, the chairman of the Essex County FA. The first match was an Essex Senior Cup tie with Harwich & Parkeston and the score was 6-0. It was reported that the new stand had a capacity of 800.
The attendance record was set in 1967 with the visit of Reading in the FA Cup when 7200 crammed into the ground. Although the ground was regularly maintained, not a lot changed until the arrival of Redbridge Forest in 1990 to ground share. They paid for a new stand to be erected in the corner of the ground to increase the seating capacity and replaced the grass banking with concrete terracing. These improvements brought the ground up to the standard required by the Football Conference. Redbridge Forest and Dagenham merged in July 1992 and the ground improvements have continued right up to the present day. In 1995 they replaced the crumbling pitch perimeter wall with a new brick built one and two years later rebuilt the toilet block at the Victoria Road end of the ground.
During the summer of 1956, the turnstile block at the Victoria Road side of the ground was added, and the men’s toilets situated at the Victoria Road end were also built. In the summer of 1958, the cover over the far side was erected, at a cost of £1400 - a substantial sum in those days.
The wooden stand was now starting to look its age and the Club decided it was time to demolish it and brought in Bill O’Neil from Atcost to design and build a new purpose built one. The new 800-seater, which brought the Clubs seating capacity to over a thousand, was used for the first time for the Essex Senior Cup final against Canvey Island on August 4th 2001, just 12 weeks after the old stand saw it’s last game.
The first floodlight match at Victoria Road was Dagenham v Woodford in the FA Youth Cup on 26th September 1957 and the first senior match was friendly against Rainham Town on 19th March 1958.
The Club continue to improve the facilities and summer 2001 also constructed new turnstile blocks and replaced the eight floodlights which used to sit on the sides of the ground with four corner ones.
In October 2001, Bass Brewers PLC, agreed a record breaking £150,000 sponsorship of the new stand, now named the Carling Stand. This provided the funds for the improvements to continue and a number of crush barriers were installed in 2002, which helped ease the flow of spectators around the ground along with a new walkway behind the covered terrace. Also constructed was a new turnstile block at the Bury Road end of the ground. In July 2007 a new sponsorship deal was set up with the Barking and Dagenham London Borough Council with the stadium renamed the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Stadium. Two years later the Council gave the Club a grant of £250,000 and a loan to assist the funding of as new stand to hold 1200 visiting spectators at the Pondfield Road end of the ground. The stand was opened for the first time for the visit of Darlington on the 10th October 2009. This brought the seating capacity of the Stadium up to 2200 and the stand also incorporates the new changing rooms. The floodlights were replaced in the summer of 2012 bringing the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Stadium fully up to the new Football League regulations with regards to floodlighting.

STANDS Norh Ferriby fan Sam Shepherd discusses the hectic festive period which yielded mixed results... The two games against York over Christmas and New Year provided two completely differing performances from the Villagers. On Boxing Day they gave their big city rivals too much respect, especially in the first-half, and were bullied out of the game. York scored a scrappy goal and managed to hold onto the narrow lead throughout the rest of the game. Ferriby created chances in the second-half, but they couldn’t find an equaliser and therefore fell to a
and he definitely got one. Ferriby dominated the game at Bootham Crescent for large periods especially in the first-half. They dominated the midfield thanks to some excellent play from Emerton, Fallowfield, Oliver and Sutton. They opened the scoring in the 28th minute when an excellent ball from Connor Oliver split the York defence apart. Reece Thompson did well to beat the offside trap, before rounding the goalkeeper and finishing exquisitely from a narrow
half. Connor Oliver almost got his second assist of the game when his floated free kick was met by the head of Mark Gray, but he was denied by an excellent save. A few minutes later Levi Sutton, who was my man of the match, had an even better chance to seal the three points. An excellent counter attack started by Taron Hare ended with Sutton baring down on the box, he cut inside the last defender but leant back too much and scooped his shot over the bar when aiming for the top corner. Despite the missed chances Ferriby held on for all three points which they richly deserved much to the delight of the large following from Ferriby who celebrated with the players after the final whistle.
disappointing 1-0 defeat. Steve Housham identified the problems after the game. He felt his side lacked their usual fighting spirit in the first-half and that cost them the match. He asked for a response from his players on New Year’s Day 22

This was the perfect performance to make up for a disappointing Boxing Day defeat. Today we face promotion chasing Dagenham & Redbridge in what will be a very tough match, but a confident Ferriby side could surprise a few people again and get a result. Enjoy the game! Sam
