THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

CHRIS BOLDER

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Nuneaton Town to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home.

Hello and welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium where we take on Nuneaton Town. I have a long history with North Ferriby United playing the majority of my nonleague football here with numerous successes and happy memories. It has always been a club that has been viewed with high regard in the non league world and to be a part of that both as a player and now the manager is a real honour. I have an affinity with the club and the messages of support from fans on social media are appreciated. It’s that affinity that was one of the reasons I’ve accepted Jamie’s [Waltham, club owner] offer to become manager. The other main reason is that it is a progression in my management career. I’ve learnt a lot working as Steve Kittrick’s assistant at Scarborough and the Ferriby role is a good opportunity for me. When Jamie acquired the club and we discussed the possibility of me becoming

manager it was an easy decision both from a personal progression point of view and from a professional basis. The short-term aim is to keep the club in the division and I do believe that this can be achieved. You only have to look at Gainsborough Trinity to see that putting a run together can dramatically change your league position. There is always something of a confidence issue when you are in a poor run of form, but a few good results can turn that round. When you’re in this sort of situation it seems that every mistake is punished and that decisions go against you. My long-term goals are to build a team where players can develop and instil an ethos that becomes synonymous with the club once again. Hull and the East Riding has produced good players over the years, so in the longterm we want to include more local players. There are good players in the area and they need the opportunity to play at a higher level. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE MANAGER

For some it will be a step too far, but there are others who will thrive and develop. North Ferriby was quite unique when I played for them. We had a large number of local lads in the squad. That develops a closeness to the club because players arrive with a sense of belonging and an identity with the club and its fans. Jamie and I feel it is important to try to bring that quality back. I think it’s only natural that when a new regime comes in to any football club that player departures and arrivals are to be expected. I will be working hard with both the current squad of players and exploring the possibility of potential arrivals in order to turn this current situation around. This is not something that can happen overnight, but I am fully aware that we must start putting points on the board sooner rather than later. We have good players here, but we need to develop the basics quickly and start reducing scoring 4

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

opportunities for opponents. It goes without saying that we also need to put goals away at the other end so we will also be looking at increasing opportunities for the strikers Prior to last Saturday, Nuneaton have found themselves with only one win in their past six league games, so last week’s victory would have given them a much-needed confidence boost. They showed last week that they have goals in their side and were very organised and hard working. The fans of this football club have always been positive and have experienced some very special moments. Their support is essential and hopefully we will create another special memory by pulling off the great escape! Chris Bolder First-Team Manager

NUNEATON TOWN

The wind of change has blown though the Eon Visual Media stadium, with Jamie Waltham becoming owner of the club. One of the first decision was to relieve manager Steve Housham of his job and replace him with former Ferriby favourite Chris Bolder. Bolder returns to the club and takes charge of his first competitive match this afternoon against Nuneaton Town. The two clashed a week ago in the FA Trophy, with Town dumping the Villagers out of the competition after a 5-1 defeat. Waltham had taken on the job of manager for the match while a permanent boss could be found, but Ferriby found themselves 4-0

down at half-time after goals from Ashley Chambers (two), Daniel Nti and Jordan Nicholson. Callum Rzonca pulled a goal back early in the second-half, but Nuneaton scored a fifth via Nicholson, who completed his brace. Returning to league action, Nuneaton sit two places and have 10 points better off than Ferriby, with both needing to pick up points in order to avoid relegation. Ferriby, though, will take heart from Nuneaton’s recent form in the league having not won in their previous five league outings. That said, Town have picked up back-toback draws with Chorley and Curzon Ashton, prior to a run of three defeats on the trot. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

NUNEATON TOWN

RECENT HISTORY

March 2008 saw a take over from the board that had run the club from 1991. The new directors soon found they had inherited excessive debts despite the sale of Manor Park to property developers. The new club reverted to its former name of Nuneaton Town and were demoted two divisions from Conference North to Southern League Division One. Following the demotion to the Southern League Midlands Division the club gained promotion following a 1-0 play-off final victory over Chasetown at Liberty Way. The next season, 2009/10, Nuneaton found themselves in the Southern League Premier Division with several teams that were spending vast sums chasing promotion. After a slow start the team went on a fantastic run that saw them beaten only once at home and included a run of 14 straight victories, narrowing a 24-point gap between the leaders Farnborough to just two points at the end of the season. Again, the play-offs beckoned and a 6-0 thrashing of big spending Brackley Town in the semi-final saw home advantage given to Nuneaton who faced Chippenham. The final went into extra time and it was befitting that a local player, Eddie Nisevic, who had come through the ranks, got the winning goal returning Nuneaton to the Conference North. Nuneaton’s return to the Conference North for the 2010/11 saw them start well and remain in the top six up until Christmas, where they gained top spot until the last week in March. Eventually after other clubs played their games in hand, Nuneaton finished just outside of the play-offs. Fortune smiled on The Boro when the club above them, Eastwood Town, were prevented from taking part in the play-offs due to a technical problem. Nuneaton faced AFC Telford Utd in the play-off semifinals but went down 2-1 on aggregate. The 2011/12 season was to see Nuneaton gain promotion back to the Conference Premier for the first time in 10 years. After maintaining a high league position throughout the season Boro’ were dealt a blow as the season entered its final few weeks when an administration error led to a six-point deduction. This seemed to spur the team on and a final day 3-2 victory at Blyth Spartans ensured their play-off place.

A superb semi-final second leg victory over Guiseley, with a goal from Andy Brown in the last minute of extra time, meant that Boro had to travel to Gainsborough Trinity for the play–off Final. Again Brown (ironically the player concerned in the admin mishap) was the goal hero in a game that saw Boro claim a 1-0 victory amid wild scenes of delight amongst the travelling supporters as the club won their place back in non-League’s top-tier. The 2012/13 season saw Boro pitting their wits against the non-League elite. Up against many full-time clubs it took a while to get to grips with their new environment but Boro’s team spirit and work ethic never wavered. Despite spending much of the season in and around the relegation zone a terrific run towards the end of the season saw Boro eventually finish in 15th place. The 2013/14 season surpassed all expectations with Boro leading the table early on and featuring in and around the play-off positions for most of the season. After manager Kevin Wilkin left for Wrexham, results tailed off in the last month or so of the season but they still finished in 13th position. A new manager, Brian Reid, was appointed and oversaw the last three games of the season. Season 2014/15 marked the club’s 125th Anniversary. However, Boro made a poor start and this resulted in Brian Reid being replaced as manager by Liam Daish. Despite the managerial change Boro were in the relegation zone for most of the season and finally finished bottom of the table. Daish parted company with the club at the end of the season and was replaced by Kevin Wilson shortly afterwards. Having just missed out on a place in the play-offs by a point at the end of the 2015/16 campaign, Boro made a slow start to the following season and Kevin Wilson was replaced by Tommy Wright in November 2016 and he promptly took the club on an unbeaten run which pulled them up the table. A mid-table finish came at the end of 2016/17, however, some key signings during the summer of 2017 led to plenty of positivity going into the new campaign. The club were rocked by the sudden departure of manager Tommy Wright in October 2017.

Saturday 25 November 2017 | Liberty Way | FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round This is not the scoreline that new owner Jamie Waltham would have been hoping for. Waltham had taken on the job of manager until a permanent manager was found. Having seen the players perform, he will be even more aware of the task that faces him over the coming months. In many ways, this was a similar performance to the one at Kidderminster, Ferriby were outplayed in the first-half and, once again, went in four goals down at the interval. Just as against Kidderminster, the secondhalf performance was an improvement and the players regained a little pride, but that is not enough. Ferriby were largely outplayed in the firsthalf. The central defence had little answer to Nuneaton’s Ashley Chambers and Jordan Nicholson, who ended the half with two goals apiece. Headers from Jordan Cooke an Bobby Johnson, both off-target were Ferriby’s only goal attempts until Mason Warren hit a free-kick straight to keeper Dean Lyness just before half-time. By then, Nuneaton were three ahead. The home side took the lead after 16 minutes through Nicholson after Chambers squared the ball across the penalty area. Three goals in seven minutes then settled the game. Ryan Beswick’s corner into the six-yard box was put home by Daniel Nti after 31 minutes. Two minutes later Chambers’ shot was deflected in for number three. The fourth goal was another saw Nicholson feed Chambers after another break. Nuneaton had looked more comfortable on the ball and always seemed to have players in a position to receive the ball. 12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

To their credit, the Villagers gave a better second-half performance, Joel Ambalu came on as a substitute and he and Joe Pugh looked sharper up front. With Simon Russell dropping into a more defensive midfield role and with a tighter defence, Nuneaton had far less space and time than they did in the first-half. The home side were regularly pushed back and were often glad to just clear their lines. Ferriby went close in the opening minutes. Warren’s goal-bound shot was deflected for a corner and then Nuneaton cleared off their line after the ball had come off two of their own defenders. Chambers hit the bar for Nuneaton, before Callum Rzonca pulled a goal back. He scored from close range after Lyness had parried an Ambalu shot. The final goal in the last minute was academic. Nicholson scored with a low drive after a quick break. Waltham was unhappy with some aspects of the performance, but he believed there are positives to be taken from the game, “We played a 4-4-2 formation because that demands accountability from the players. In the first-half we saw one of the worst centre-back partnership performances you will ever see. That cost us three of the goals. “On the plus side, the players want to get the ball and play and we performed better in the second-half. The lads showed a good attitude and there were glimpses of quality. Callum Rzonca was impressive and he got our goal. Bobby Johnson also performed well once he started playing inside. Kojo Kyei also had a good game. I’ve learned a lot from the performance.”
