30 - MEAD MATTERS 35 - CLUB STATS 36 - FIXTURES & RESULTS Good afternoon everyone. Someone once said that “a week is a long time in football!” Well if that’s the case, god knows how you would class a fortnight then - a lifetime perhaps? Lets face it, in our last edition of The Mead, we were bottom of the league having won just four league games all season. Today, two weeks later, Tommy and the boys go looking for our fifth win in fifteen days - which really is quite a turnaround!
And so what do we have for you today? We’ve the story of the last two weeks; we’ve news of new schools joining the Passport Scheme and there’s the regular features from the Academy and the Under-21s as well as from Carly’s treatment room; Dave’s secretarial brief case, as well from the Gaffer and the Chairman’s desk... May I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and see you all here on Boxing Day... Cheers Greenie

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Paul
BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Witham Town FC, on this last football Saturday before Christmas, and after some hospitality and hopefully an enjoyable game they all have a safe return journey home.
the schools that have arranged to visit the club during the season, the club allow them on free as we feel that the children may go home and tell their parents how much they enjoyed the experience.
May I also personally, once again, take this opportunity to welcome all those local resident’s that have decided to join us as new supporters through our season ticket initiative this season.
And today I’d like to welcome a couple of guests from our School partners – Clare Seccombe from Bishop John Robinson and Stuart Metcalfe from Foxfield School (who is joining us I understand after playing himself this afternoon) – and thank both for their help in establishing the scheme. But whatever scheme you are involved in, you are very welcome to SCT as the club’s guest.
I know that the benefit of the £30.00 season ticket for 4 has made a lot of difference to the families that are involved at this time with this initiative. Even though we’re half way through the season, it’s still a great deal and could well be a great present for someone this Christmas. Also may I thank all the schools that have joined the Passport Scheme that allows all persons under the age of 14 to come to a match free of charge as long as they are accompanied by an elder who is only charged the concession price, and finally also all

It seems an age since my last notes when we were bottom of the league and about to face Great Wakering – it is really only two weeks ago and doesn’t it surely highlight how things can change so very quickly in football. It helps it to be the game we all love so very much. My thanks must go to my director
of football Ian this week as it’s been a difficult period for me because of a close family bereavement. Indeed, I was in two minds whether to go to VCD last weekend, but my family insisted and so I was on hand to witness what was our third win in a row. Since then of course, we’ve also won at Cheshunt as well on Tuesday to lift all our spirits going into the busy Christmas period ahead! My thanks also to Mike for helping me compile my notes today, which is why they are somewhat shorter than normal, but rest assured things will return to normal on Boxing Day when we welcome Phoenix here to the SCT. All that’s left for me to do is to invite you all to join us in The Mead Bar for mince pies during the afternoon, and finally to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas! Enjoy the match! Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director
MANAGER’S NOTES
TOMMY
WARRILOW Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Witham Town to Bayliss Avenue for a game that’s important to both sides. We go into today’s game after a great start to December – I said in my last notes how important it was to get a good run going and so far it couldn’t have gone any better. There’s no way that we’ll get carried away with the last four games, but at the same time I fully believe that we are at last getting out just rewards. We’ve all been very frustrated yet those who have watched the majority of our games will be the first to tell you that we’ve deserved a lot more than we’ve actually got this season.
But I have to give the lads full credit for the way that they’ve stuck at it and they’re now beginning to reap the benefits of what we’re trying to do down here. I said on Day One that we’ll look at the league table on the first Saturday in January to assess where we are and where we’re going and if we keep going during the rest of December through to then it’ll make it very interesting for the remainder of the season. The Great Wakering game was just all about winning. It wasn’t the best performance we’ve put in this season by a long way but for both sides it was a very messy, very flat game where whoever scored the first goal would ask the opposition difficult questions and we got that goal which resulted in
three points which were a must going into the game. What it did do was to give us a spring board to build on and touch wood so far we’ve now won four on the bounce. That’s not to say that we haven’t had to have words with the players on the way, but they’ve come up with goods and have fully deserved all three road wins. We’ve been on some results where we’ve deserved a lot more which has made the last fortnight so pleasing. We could have won all three games by more than we did. We’ve shored up the defence taking away the two great strikes at VCD and the boys up front have been great – we’ve got a fight going on up there now for the places.
“90% of managers have said to us after games that we deserved more than we’ve got and now they’re starting to look over their shoulders.” 06
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
MANAGER’S NOTES
Competition throughout the squad is getting better now which is what we’ve been looking for and is good and that’s what all managers want – it’s not nice, but it’s what we all want! We’ve a lot of games again this month and we want everyone involved and everyone staying positive. We’ve resigned Tyrus again for the club and he scored on his debut. His fitness levels aren’t going to be there through no fault of his own – he’s working hard to get there! He’s come in and now he’s going to fight it out for a place with the other three guys – Ike, Vinesy and Alex Teniola. It’s good that the boys up front are all chipping in, and overall the performances are improving all over the pitch. I think Harvey Brand and Jay Porter have been outstanding getting up and down the line – its great as no one player is complaining about being left out and everyone’s digging in. We’ve stayed together as we’ve had
to – going bottom of the league isn’t a nice place to be and we’ve found a lot out about each other. We’re football people and we know what we see – if we’re rubbish we’re big enough to say so and I hope now that we can move forward through December and into the New Year and finish up having something to play for at the end of the season. We’re still just turning the corner but we’ve given ourselves a platform. We’ve got a great set of lads here and when you’re at the bottom and look around the changing room you learn more about each other and hopefully we’re now in that position we want to be so that we can push onwards and upwards. Ninety percent of managers have said to us after games that we deserved more than we’ve got and now they’re starting to look over their shoulders. I just hope that we can carry that on today, but I know that we’re going to have another difficult game. They are a well organised and athletic side so
it will be a tough afternoon, but if we can see December out the way that we’ve started it, it will give us a great spring-board or launching pad for the New Year. It’s a busy time of year for all of us as we all know, but the boys are still in Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday for training and games all over the Christmas period. Games we all know come thick and fast on Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and Bank Holiday Monday so the next couple of weeks will be without doubt our busiest time of year as we’re all focused on keeping this run going. Thanks as ever for your support and backing especially at this time of year – it is appreciated and valued by every single one of the players and my team off the pitch and so for today it just remains for me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and we’ll see you in the Mead Bar after the game. In her regular column, first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list...
Welcome to Bayliss Avenue this afternoon where we host Witham Town. It’s been a great December for us so far which has seen us win our last four games against some good sides. There’s a real buzz inside the changing room at the moment and I think that’s been a factor in the last two games where we’ve gone behind.
In injury news; Again its been a quite couple of weeks with just a couple of ankle injuries causing doubts for Aaron and Ellis. It’s that time of the year where the pitches tend to get a little heavier and the players have to really start looking after themselves in between games and training to recover.
am hopeful Tom will have a full side to pick from for the game today. Let’s make it five in five and see in Christmas and with a good win today. Have a lovely Christmas all. Carly Payne First-team Physio

SECRETARY’S COLUMN
FROM THE
SECRETARY’S DESK
Welcome everyone to today’s Ryman North fixture against Witham Town, we hope they enjoy their brief stay at SCT. Our season seems to have finally kicked itself started, up to kick off today we have had 4 tough wins on the bounce. Three points earned at home to a dogged Great Wakering Rovers team. We then followed this with three superb away victories at Waltham Abbey, in a performance where we had total control and thoroughly deserved the points.
Then we went to local rivals VCD last week and again deserved all three points with a solid all round performance. Then finally last Tuesday we travelled to Cheshunt, a club with aspirations of promotion and have been riding within the promotion places since the beginning of the season, but a superb 3-1 away win gave us all three points to come home with. It’s hard to explain why our fortunes have turned , Tommy and Alex have been working hard on the training ground and maybe now we are at times getting that little run of the ball that you often need.
I am expecting a tough game today as always and having played them within the last few weeks we know that Witham are very good going forward, strong, pacey and have players within their squad capable of getting goals. I hope you enjoy the match today and that the result once again favours the Mead. I’d just like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful, healthy time with their families. WITHAM TOWN
Thamesmead Town have had quite a turnaround in fortunes of late. From languishing at the foot of the table with relegation becoming an ever-increasing prospect to now being clear of danger.
Momentum is often a term used in football and the Mead have that in abundance at present after four victories on the trot seeing them rise from 24th to 17th in the table. Today hoping to dent that newfound confidence is Witham Town, who sit five places above
14
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
Thamesmead, but have struggled to find consistency of late without a win in their last six outings in all competitions. That said, they have picked up creditable draws with Cheshunt, Aveley and AFC Hornchurch.
Having once been on the cusp of the play-off places, Town have dropped with a run of poor results, but they will view this game as a chance to get back to winning ways, while the Mead will be keen to make it five on the trot.
CLUB HISTORY In 1948 the Witham Town FC of today re-formed thanks to the efforts of a small band of stalwarts who met in an old British Legion hut under the Chairmanship of Mr.Sid Rice who was the driving force behind the club re-forming.
In their first season back playing they became champions of the Chelmsford and Mid Essex League Division 2, winners of the Tiptree Charity Cup and the Tolleshunt D’Arcy Cup courtesy of a 1-0 win over Feering. They became founder members of the Mid-Essex League Premier Division. After two more seasons in the CMEL, a dispute with the League over a cup match played in blizzard like conditions, saw Witham Town switch to the South Essex League where they spent seven seasons winning the Championship in 1955-56. A supporters club was then formed and in 1958 the decision was made to join the Essex and Suffolk Border League and thus step up to an intermediate level of football, which came about in 1959. In the meantime, Witham Town again won the Essex & Suffolk Border League (in 1970-71), and were invited to become founder members of the Essex Senior League and were the inaugural Champions in 1971-72, pipping Billericay Town to the title by just one point. Witham went on to spend more than 15 seasons in this league, usually finishing in the top half of the table.
The mid 1980’s provided several top 3 finishes including runners-up in 1984-85 and 1986-87, with the Championship being won for the second time in 1985-86.
This good run of form in league and cup competitions again led the club to seek a higher level of football to play at. They applied to join the Isthmian League and this was accepted in 1987. Their first match in the Isthmian League (Division 2 North) in 1987-88 saw Witham win 6-0 at Ware which ended with the club finishing in 7th place. The end of the 1990-91 season would see the two Isthmian Division 2’s (North and South) ‘de-regionalise’, therefore making a top half finish imperative if Witham were to retain their Division 2 status and avoid the drop into what would be the next seasons new Division 3. A good finish saw Witham end up in 6th place, thereby ensuring their position in the restructured division. In 1993-94 Witham had their highest ever league finish, 5th in the Isthmian League Division 2.. Unfortunately, this could not be built upon and Town were relegated at the end of the 1999-2000 season to Division 3 after 13 years in Div 2. The next few years saw further restructuring of the Isthmian League culminating in a runners-up spot in Division 2 (formerly Div 3) at the end of 2005-06 as Witham took their place the newly formed step 4 Division 1 North. At the end of the 2008-09 season Witham Town finished 21st out of 22
THE OPPOSITION
teams consigning them to relegation to the Essex Senior League. As the 2009-10 season drew to a close, and on the back of eight straight wins, Witham earned the necessary point on the last game of the season at Barkingside in a tense 2-2 draw that guaranteed runners-up position just ahead of Burnham Ramblers. Unfortunately, this was not enough for Town to regain their spot in the Ryman League. During the 2010-11 season, for the last 4 games, current manager Garry Kimble took over the reins as the club finished third. In the following campaign, Kimble’s first full term in charge, Witham Town enjoyed what could arguably be claimed to be their most successful season ever as they broke many long standing club records on the way to the Essex Senior League title, last won in 1986, and therefore securing a return to Ryman football. 2012-13 Witham achieved their highest ever league finish, 4th in the Ryman League Division 1 North and qualified for the Play Offs only going down 3-2 to eventual winners Thamesmead Town. 2013-14 season Witham finished in their highest ever league position, Runners up in the Ryman League Division 1 North and qualified for the Play Offs again. Needham Market were beaten 1-0 in the Semi Final and Harlow Town 3-0 in the Final as Witham secured a place in the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time. The highest position the club as ever achieved, however Premier status only lasted the one season.

Hi and good luck to Tom and the boys today.
1-6 3-8 2-5 3-8 3-3 2-3 0-8 P-P 1-9
The academy lads had a rest last week as the bad weather forced us to postpone our match against Millwall Lions. The lads were obviously disappointed, but it gave them a chance to rest up and enjoy a relaxed training session with Gary. They played their last match before Christmas last Wednesday at the Gallagher Stadium in Maidstone against their “Blues” team and I’ll hopefully have good news to report in my Boxing Day column. I would like to thank Gary for his continued hard work and effort in the academy and I must also thank Kim Shirley and all at Timpsons dry cleaners
in Thamesmead centre for making sure our lads always look pristine in their kit – it’s very much appreciated by everyone! The players and I would like to thank Paul, our chairman, for his continued support and for his hard work in assuring the academy runs smoothly and continues to progress. With our satellite centre at the Northfleet Technology College performing well and our apprenticeship scheme starting in January, it’s really is going to be a busy and exciting New Year ahead. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas! Yours in sport. Ian Docker Academy Manager

THE UNDER-21S
THE
UNDER-21s Hello everyone,
Since my last notes we’ve played twice with a third game being just last night (Friday) when we travelled to face Harlow Town. The first one came on a Thursday night when we made the long trip to face AFC Sudbury. Now anyone who made the midweek trip there with the first team midweek there last season knows it’s not exactly the best trip to have midweek – and so it proved – sadly – once again! We were caught up in traffic and arrived late, and really had no real time to warm up and found ourselves a goal behind in the first ten minutes. To their credit the boys levelled the scores through Jeremiah Efe only to go in at the break behind. Sudbury added a third after half time to make it a very long – and late – journey home! The following Tuesday, we hosted Brightlingsea Regent looking to complete the double over the Essex side after winning 3-0 at their place in early November. Sadly again it was to be the visitors who won the game as we went down 1-3 on the same night as the first team won at Waltham Abbey.
I don’t know why, but we started slowly and were two down inside 25 minutes, and although Ayo Odukoya pulled one back for us, a goal eleven minutes from time condemned us to a successive 1-3 defeat. That leaves us 9th in the table, and the boys now get a “break” until Tuesday 3rd January when we host the return with Harlow at 7:45pm. If we can show this same level of passion, hunger and desire every week that we have showed so far, I really don’t see any reason why we cannot be right up there again come the end of the season. Finally from me, I’d just like to welcome one of the Club’s guests this after – Clare Seccombe – who’s the PE lead at Bishops John Robinson School. Since we began sessions at the school as part of Year five and Year six’s curriculum on a Thursday afternoon, the backing and support that we’ve had from Clare has been terrific and can’t thank her (and the school) enough for their welcome and hospitality – something that I hope will continue into 2017 and beyond! Good luck to Tom and the boys today and Merry Christmas to you all!
