CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Phoenix FC our local neighbours, on this cold Boxing Day afternoon, and after some warm hospitality and maybe a nice mince pie and hopefully an enjoyable game they all have a safe short return journey home. May I also personally, once again, take this opportunity to welcome all those local resident’s that have decided to join us as new supporters through our season ticket initiative this season. I know that the benefit of the £30.00 season ticket for four has made a lot of difference to the families that are involved at this time with this initiative, and I hope during the next few weeks we have more families join us and become new supporters. Also may I thank all the schools that have joined the Passport Scheme that allows all persons under the age of 14 to come to a match free of charge as long as they are accompanied by an elder who is only charged the concession price. Finally also to all the schools that have arranged to visit the club during

the season, the club allow them on free as we feel that the children may go home and tell their parents how much they enjoyed the experience, but whatever scheme you are involved in you are very welcome to SCT as the club’s guest. As most of you will know I have not been around for the last few weeks due to my ill health I have been suffering from bronchitis with a little bit of pleurisy thrown in to make things interesting. But I’m now well on the road to recovery and, while I have not passed my medical to join you this afternoon, hopefully I will be able to join you all when we visit Tilbury on the 31st. Since I last wrote my programme notes at the beginning of December we have had a great run of results, and to be honest I am very pleased for Tommy and his squad of players. It has proved that my unconditional support for them during the previous difficult few months has been fully rewarded, by the club rising up the league. I know personally the effort and hard

work that my management team have been putting into getting it right on the field all those hard training sessions and all this hard work is now paying off. I can remember when we were sitting at the bottom of the league people around me stating I should bite the bullet and just admit I had made a mistake bringing Tommy to the club, but no I had faith in my own convictions. As I have said before you do not become a bad player overnight and the same goes for a manager and, as I have said on numerous occasions, I feel I have the best non-league manager in Tommy at this club, and I feel my loyalty and belief is paying dividends. Here we are at the end of December, we have played five months of football and had a good FA Cup run which earned a bit of money for the club, it all helps. For those that have been reading my programme notes this season will know that this is the last season that we shall be playing at SCT,

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

this decision is mainly based on the inability of SCT being able to accommodate our training needs for both the first-team and the Under-21s.

benefits the club were offered and given when we first moved into these fantastic facilities being removed. I felt, at times, people forget that the football club was here long before the SCT, and as I have said many times, in my opinion, I feel that the club in those early days allowed decisions to be made that in the long term has found us where we are today moving from the SCT.

But the other part of my decision was the inability of the club being able to agree a long-term strategy that both parties could work to within a reasonable financial figure. I wanted to have the club playing at SCT for the next 10 years, but this was not part of the new strategy of the Peabody Group and my requests fell on deaf ears, they seem to have other ideas on how they can use the facilities at the SCT more beneficially without the involvement of our club. Therefore I have had to look for a new home for the club and too this end I think I have found one. I have reached the legal process of putting my money where my mouth is and a proposed ground share agreement has been given to the Ryman League for their approval. Once this is done and the document is signed by all parties I will advise you all were I have decided will be the club’s new home for the next five seasons. It has been a long slog for me because I knew the alternative for the club was to let it die, but as I gave my word when I took over the financial responsibilities of this club, I would do all I can to ensure it continue to operate. I know a few of the older generation and members of the old committee have suggested to me that they would fully understand if I left the club to die, but I have not taken the club over to lose this battle now, so I ignored those around me sometimes annoying individuals, but I feel whether I am right or wrong as long as I am the one putting the money in I should be the one making the decisions and sometimes I will not

In my opinion moving to the SCT was not the correct decision that was made especially without some formal agreement in place by those in charge of the club at that time, other than 1 year licences.

seek advice from others. Unfortunately this club is run as a business and a limited company so the Directors are responsible for the legal running of the club. I know of course I will be known as the Chairman that took Thamesmead out of Thamesmead, but the alternative is quite clear for all to see by going to company’s house and reading the accounts. Therefore, I have no regrets of what I have done, as I believe it will be a new beginning for the club and Tommy and his management are ready for the challenge and I hope you will support me and continue to follow the club. Finally, I have just been advised that Mick Hayes, the Trust Thamesmead old CEO, is leaving the Trust after 12 ½ years this Christmas. I first met Mick when I joined the club in 2012, and since then he has always been a dear friend to the club. Yes, we have disagreed on many issues but only due to his budgets being reassessed resulting in many of the

Anyway Mick and his staff have worked tirelessly with me since 2012 and especially on a financial basis he was very eager to assist me in complying with Peabody’s cash flow policy’s. I therefore would like to thank Mick personally in print for his support, and make him an offer, that he will always be a friend of the club and maybe in his part retirement he will find the time to join is on the terraces as he has done in the past, he was a true friend to me and I fully appreciate the efforts he personally took to ensure the club continued to play at SCT over the last 4 years. May I take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Happy New Year and I hope you will agree with me that 2017 will be a year for everyone to remember when the club was given a new lease of life something it certainly needs if it is to survive. Enjoy the match! Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW I would like to welcome our neighbours from Phoenix to Bayliss Avenue this Boxing Day afternoon, and I hope that you all had a good Christmas! We were obviously delighted to keep the winning run going in our last game nine days ago against Witham. We went in at half time two goals up and said they’d been good and bad in the performance because we’re expecting so much more from the boys now. We’ve told them that when we’re having a go at them now it’s not just possibly because they’re not playing well, it’s because we know how much

more we’ve got to give. And the Witham game was a classic example of that – 4-2 against a side who, on their day, can beat anyone and in the game before they came to us had got a good draw at Hornchurch. We really should have been out of sight as we gifted the two goals to them through individual errors and yet we had the character to go back and create the chances that we needed to where we could have scored four or five in the second half to keep the winning run going. I have been asked what I actually hoped for when I put in my notes against Great Wakering at the start of

the month and I said that we need a “big December”, and if I’m honest its exactly what we’ve done since that day. I’m not just saying it in hindsight – the Chairman will tell you, week in week out even when we were bottom of the league – I’m an honest fella and I know what I’ve seen; we’ve been alright this year. There’s an old saying someone once told me in football about rather being a lucky manager than a good manager. But I don’t think we’ve had a lot of luck in the first half of the season – don’t get me wrong we’ve been our own worst enemies at time, but we do

“Five wins on the bounce is fantastic, but it doesn’t win anything! We won’t get carried away” 06

MANAGER’S NOTES

create a lot of chances. We’ve turned quite a long way since pre-season here when everyone was worrying about us scoring goals to now talk about the chances that we’re creating. We’ve done it before – OB and I – we’ve been around the block and five wins on the bounce is fantastic, but it doesn’t win anything! We won’t get carried away and there’s no reason that we can’t take the form into the New Year. We did it in our little stint at Cray after finding our shape through some in’s and out’s and I think we’ve done the same here. I’ve told the boys if someone comes available better that’s football – but at the moment there’s no real need as there’s nothing that wrong with what we’re doing.

We’ve “just” got to make sure that we don’t make things hard for ourselves. This run honestly does not surprise me, and if anyone says “you’re bound to say that”, then they haven’t been listening to me or reading my notes all season! I know what I see – I’m happy with what we’re doing and I can’t see any reason why it can’t continue. Every game we’re playing at the moment is a difficult one to call for different reasons. I don’t care who we play – I’ve got a lot of friends at Phoenix and I’m so pleased with the way they’ve grown as a club over the past few years. But whether it’s them or VCD – I got no more pleasure in beating VCD than I did in winning against Witham – I want to win games. I’m expected a tough game – it is a local derby on

Boxing Day, which hopefully everyone will have come to join us to get some fresh air after enjoying their day yesterday. So it’s a completely different animal – all the game’s we’ve got are tough. Yet again that showed last week when Hornchurch only just edged out Wroxham – you’ve got to be respectful on who you’re playing, but if we can sort ourselves out and do what we do then there is no reason at all that this winning run can’t continue! Join us if you can in the Mead Bar after the game – and if you can’t and aren’t making the trip to Tilbury on Saturday, may I wish you and your family a very Happy (and safe) New Year! SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, may I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and hope that your festive holiday is going well. This afternoon we welcome our close neighbours Phoenix Sports to SCT, I hope they enjoy their short stay with us. Last Saturday saw us chalk up another three valuable points, a solid 4-2 home win against Witham Town, we have now put 5 victories together back-to-back and this has made our league position definitely more healthier than a few

weeks ago! Today will see us involved in a very tough encounter, Phoenix have started the season really well, their manager Steve O’Boyle, who spent many seasons here as both player and manager of a very successful reserve side, has put together a very capable Ryman North side and as long as they can find a degree of consistency in the second half of the season I see no reason why they can’t get themselves into a play-off position. On New Year’s Eve we travel to play Tilbury, which is always a difficult

place to go and earn points. It has a 3 o’clock kick-off as does our New Year’s Day fixture on Monday 2nd January when we again travel through the Dartford Tunnel to play high flying Aveley, they are now managed by Thamesmead’s former manager Terry Spillane, but all said it will be two very tough matches. Enjoy today’s match and all the best for the New Year. Best wishes. Dave Joy Club Secretary

From being threatened with relegation to now being considered one of, if not the, form team in the division Thamesmead Town host Phoenix Sports on the back of five straight victories.

The Mead will no doubt want to make it six in succession, but must be on their guard against Phoenix who sit six places and ten points higher in the table. That said, the away side arrive at Bayliss Avenue with mixed form.

14

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

After registering back-to-back wins over Brightlingsea Regent and Witham Town they fell short against Bowers & Pitsea in a 3-1 loss.

Last time out, they played out a 2-2 draw with Tilbury, but if they are to harbour any hopes of pushing for the play-offs they will have an eye on beating Thamesmead this afternoon. For the Mead they are riding the crest of a confidence wave, but with harder games on the horizon in Tilbury and Aveley, the Mead could do with another three-point haul.

CLUB HISTORY Phoenix Sports Club was formed in 1935 as St. Johns Welling which later changed its name to Lakeside. After the Second World War they reformed and renamed Phoenix as it was seen to be rising from the ashes of the previous two clubs amid the destruction of the blitz. After entering the Sidcup League, Kent Amateur League, and the Dartford League, the club settled in the Kent County Football League Division One West, finishing runners up twice in the 1950s, and once in the 70s. Due to financial difficulties we were forced to form a Limited Company and are now called PHOENIX SPORTS CLUB (1982) LTD. The club entered the Spartan League in 1986-87 and competed there for six seasons. They then returned to the Kent County League Division One West, winning the challenge cup in 1993-94. We won the league in 1999-2000, gaining promotion to the Premier Division, however after two relegations we ended up in Division Two West. We won Division Two West in 2004-05 and Division One West in 2007-08, regaining our Kent County League Premier Division status. In recent years we have seen a steady improvement in the standard of football played at Phoenix, especially after the introduction of our Saturday morning soccer academy for juniors and a new management team at our senior level. This resulting in the 1st team winning Div 2 of the Kent County Football League, The West Kent Challenge Shield, The Hospitals Charity Cup and the Kent Junior Cup in season 2004-2005.

Maintaining steady progress to win the Div 1 Championship and promotion to the Premier Division and also the West Kent Challenge Shield and the Hospitals Charity Cup again, followed by a win in the KCFA Intermediate Challenge Shield.

After 3 seasons in the Premier Division, the first team became founder members of the Kent Invicta League at step 6 of the National League System the highest level of football the club has ever played at. We went on to finish runners up, missing out by only two points to eventual champions Bly Spartans as well as reaching the League Cup Final, again losing out to Bly Spartans. This past season our 3rd senior team gained entry into the Kent County League, winning Reserve Division West and reaching the final of the KCFA Junior Cup group A and the Hospitals Charity Cup. We presently have a total of 38 teams at Phoenix, making us one of the biggest clubs in the area. Phoenix are also a FA Charter standard community club, the highest level of youth recognition from the Football Association. Unfortunately the 1st team and Reserve team Management both decided to resign for personal reasons at the end of season 2011-2012. After an exhaustive process we appointed Steve O’Boyle and Tony Beckingham as Joint 1st Team Managers, and John Hope as Manager for the Reserves assisted by Brian Magenis and John Barry. After a successful campaign and losing only 2 League games the 1st Team managed to win the Kent

THE OPPOSITION

Invicta League Championship to gain promotion to the Kent League, which has been renamed as Southern Counties East Football League. After finishing in 6th place in our inaugural season, we have made some more ground improvements and have received confirmation of an F Grade. We aspired to a higher finish, hoping for maybe 4th spot, for the next season. We had a very good start to the season but unfortunately lost in our first ever appearance in the FA Cup. Losing on penalties after a replay. We then began an unbelievable run in both the League and FA Vase. The Vase journey was fantastic culminating in us reaching the 4th Round Proper, losing to the eventual winners North Shields. In the League we managed to lose only 1 game all season and accumulating 30 clean sheets. Due to these performances we managed to win the League quite comfortably in the end. These achievements meant that we also had to work miracles off the pitch, but we eventually managed to get all the necessary works done in time to gain promotion to The Ryman League North Division. After a long 1st season, we managed to finish in 14th place of 24 teams. This can only be classed as a great result for the club. We now try to push on for another good season and hopefully a higher place finish, although we will not now be an unknown quantity.

Alex almost opened the scoring early on as his header (from Ellis’ corner) was cleared off the line. The same players then combined for Vinesy’s opener on 16 minutes – Ellis hit the bar and Alex’s shot was saved before following up Vinesy scored his fourth in three games since returning from injury.

The response though was magnificent and swift – Ellis’ great ball released Alex who raced clear and drilled the ball past the advancing. Witham then bundled a second when Osei scored.

Good afternoon and here’s hoping everyone had a great Christmas Day and are now raring to go on this Boxing Day derby. Good luck to Tom and the boys and here’s hoping for another three well-earned points. Our academy lads finished off this year ten days ago away at Maidstone United and found themselves seven nil down at half time. Gary took the team and Tommy went down to watch. The lads started of slowly and were obviously nervous with the first-team manager being present, but after a few words of wisdom from the Gaffer and Gary, the lads “only” lost the second half 1-2; losing 1-9 at the

final whistle with Ryan Walters netting our goal. Hard lessons need to be learned and the sooner the lads realise that attitude is the key, then the quicker they will progress! In the New Year, I will be pushing Gary to now start bringing through our better players into training sessions with his Under-21s and making sure they get minutes on the field too. We must ensure we follow our pathway into the first team. Have a great Boxing Day and enjoy the match. Yours in sport. Ian Docker Academy Manager

CHRISTMAS DAY FOOTBALL

FOOTBALL ON CHRISTMAS DAY?

For football fans, the Christmas period serves up a real festive feast, with fixtures stuffed into the calendar like sage and onion into a turkey’s nether regions. Christmas Day, however, is a football-free zone, with supporters left to sit indoors and endure the Queen’s speech, cracker jokes, and kisses from elderly relatives. This wasn’t always the case, as up until the 1950s, football was traditionally played on Christmas Day. The first Football League match to be played on Christmas Day 1889 and saw Champions Preston North End beat Aston Villa 3-2 in front of a crowd of 9,000.

20

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Clubs often played derby matches on Christmas Day, and one of football’s biggest early derbies was Blackburn Rovers versus Darwen. In 1890, a match between the sides at Ewood Park ended in a Christmas Day riot!

As the Football League expanded, clubs began to travel longer distances for Christmas Day matches. There was no public transport shutdown, so fans and players could take trains and buses for festive away trips.

CHRISTMAS DAY FOOTBALL

It was customary to play return matches on Christmas Day and Boxing Day against the same opponent, to ensure that paired-up teams had equal distances to travel. The most famous Christmas Day football match took place in 1914, when one of the deadliest conflicts in human history was paused for a kick-about. The First World War ‘Christmas Truce’ saw around 100,000 troops along the Western Front exchange gifts, sing carols, and play football. The match has attained mythical status, but letters from soldiers provide evidence that it did take place. A letter home described how it all started. “A German looked over the trench – no shots,” he wrote. “Our men did the same, and then a few of our men went out and brought the dead in (69) and buried them. The next thing, a football was kicked out of our trenches and Germans and English played football.”

Playing football on a religious holiday was a contentious issue at a time when Sunday football was still banned, and some footballers abstained from playing in Christmas Day matches. Participation was actually voluntary, with FA rules at the time stating that “no club shall be compelled to play any match on Good Friday or Christmas Day”. Indeed until 1925, Arsenal were prevented from playing Christmas Day matches at Highbury as the ground that the stadium was built on was owned by St John’s College of Divinity, and the terms of the club’s lease, playing matches was banned on religious holidays. One of the strangest Christmas Day stories came in 1937 from the game between Chelsea and Charlton at Stamford Bridge which went ahead despite thick fog in London. With the score at 1-1 in the second half the fog thickened and Charlton keeper Sam Bartram began to lose sight of his team-mates – there was a good reason; they weren’t on the pitch as the game had been

abandoned! Christmas Day 1957 was the last with a full league programme. The arrival of floodlights and evening games had removed the need for fixtures to be squeezed into public holidays, and many fans were preferring to stay at home with their families on Christmas Day. In those last matches, Blackpool beat Leicester 5-1, Manchester United beat Luton 3-0, and Sheffield Wednesday and Preston drew 4-4. Chelsea beat Portsmouth 7-4, with a 17-year-old called Jimmy Greaves scoring four – whatever happened to him? The last English League match played on Christmas Day was Blackpool versus Blackburn in 1965. A crowd of 21,000 turned up to see Blackpool win 4-2. A revival of Christmas Day matches was tried in 1983 but failed miserably. Brentford had arranged to play a Third Division game with Wimbledon at 11am on Christmas morning but after pressure the game was played on Christmas Eve instead!

MATCH ACTION

Q AND A WITH

TOMMY WARRILOW Over the course of the season, we ask the Gaffer some very serious questions putting his usual column together. But as its Christmas, we’ve had a bit of fun – and we thank Tommy for playing along – with these festive posers... THE MEAD - What’s your earliest Christmas football memory? TW - No real memories as in those day’s all the games were local derbies and have merged into each other.

would you give the side and why? TW - At the moment it’s a C+ as we haven’t got the results that our performances have deserved! THE MEAD - Who’s your Player of 2016? TW - There’s probably three that I can’t split – Bode Anidugbe, Jay Porter and Paul Vines. THE MEAD - Is there a player who’s really excited you this season?

THE MEAD - What’s your best Christmas football memory?

TW - Aaron Rhule when he’s running with the ball!

TW - All the good games that are played at Christmas.

THE MEAD - What do you hope your players had for Christmas dinner?

THE MEAD - And what’s your worst? TW - Haven’t had one - yet! THE MEAD - What’s the best or worst football based present you’ve ever been given or received? TW - Bah humbug! Never bought one or ever received one. THE MEAD - What do you think of Christmas football? TW - Nothing at all – absolutely love it! THE MEAD - If you were preparing a “Mid-term” School report on the Mead’s season so far, what grade

22

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

TW - Salad! They’re very good with their diets and I was told that they were looking at salmon with lots of water with it!!! Now do I believe them, that’s the question? That said, I’m having Turkey with ALL the trimmings!!! THE MEAD - What’s your hope for football in general in 2017? TW - I really hope that more English players develop properly rather than becoming boring players and they come through with quality as I think the national team at the moment is so boring with no flair which if I’m honest doesn’t look as if

it’s been encouraged! And can we also get a few more characters in the game please… THE MEAD - If you could have asked the chairman to sign you one player as a Christmas gift, who would it have been and why? TW - Gareth Bale as let’s face it he is one of the best players in the world at the moment though what he’d think of Tilbury and Aveley away I’m not sure! THE MEAD - Finally your festive message for the Thamesmead fans? TW - I want us to break into the play-offs and whilst it’s been frustrating for everyone so far this season with your brilliant backing and help, I honestly think that it is definitely on!

THE UNDER-21S

THE

UNDER-21s Hello everyone and I hope you all had a good Christmas.

In our last game of 2016, we had a fantastic victory away to Harlow Town ten days ago. Despite having to travel on a Friday night, just for a change we arrived early and in extremely high spirits I have to add – the reason? We went through the Blackwall Tunnel rather than Dartford and the boys were singing something all the way – what I’m not too sure! Anyway despite the early arrival we didn’t start too well – partly because the Gaffer had asked us to play a different formation, but mainly because Harlow threw everything at us early on and we were a goal down before we really knew where we were. Having said that the new formation of playing three at the back did help in the respect that BOTH our usual full backs were out and didn’t play! Once we sorted things out we came in at the break 1-1 – George Jeffreys scored with his first touch. That said it, took George 30 minutes

to touch the ball and I was on the verge of pulling him off when he scored! The winning goal in stoppage time at the end showed how close the squad is as the bench cleared to celebrate sub Jack Godfrey’s goal – an inspired substitution they call that I think! Seriously, the first half of the season has gone really well. At the end of the day we are a reserve side who needs to play every week and that’s exactly what we’ve got this year in this league. As a result the first half of our season has been so much better than I could have ever hoped and we’ve now got players who are knocking on the Gaffers door to get into his first-team plans – I think that the boys are starting to realise now that they’re only one good game away from pulling on a first team shirt! Enjoy the game and a Happy New Year to you all!
