TAMWORTH North Ferriby United will be high on confidence having comeback from 2-0 down to beat Chorley 3-2 and could close the gap on Nuneaton Town when they take on Tamworth.

However the Villagers will have to be at their best if they are to get three points against a Tamworth team coming into this game on the back of three consecutive wins. Look even further into the statistics and the Lambs haven’t tasted defeat in the league as far back as the beginning of October when Curzon Ashton beat them 2-0. Their good form of late has seen them climb the league standings and the club find themselves in 6th place only two points outside the Play-off places. If the Villagers do earn all the spoils on offer it will be only the second time Tamworth have been beaten this season in the National League North.

CLUB INFORMATION Founded | 1933 Nickname | The Lambs Ground | The Lamb Ground Chairman | Bob Andrews 2014/15 Position | 7th (Conference North) Honours | Conference North Champions - 2009 FA Trophy Runners-up - 2003 FA Vase Champions - 1989

MANAGER: Andy Morrell Andy was appointed first team boss on 23 September 2014 after enjoying a successful association with Wrexham where he almost, but not quite, helped The Dragons gain promotion to the Football League in three successive seasons, although they did lift the FA Trophy at Wembley in 2012-13. Previous to his four season spell in the player-manager role at The Racecourse Ground that ended early in 2014, Andy played at Coventry City, Blackpool and Bury having previously been with The Welsh club a first time between 1998 and 2003 as a player.

For Ferriby, who will hope not to find themselves in an uphill battle again, know they need to keep up this momentum up with the teams from 2nd down to 7th separated by only six points. North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

CLUB HISTORY With the 80th birthday of The Lambs quickly approaching, a place in the top flight of non league football is a far cry from the humble beginnings of Tamworth FC.

The original ground on which the team played was next to the now demolished Jolly Sailor pub, and from 1934 onwards The Lamb became the club’s new home, where they remain to this day.

The demise of Tamworth Castle FC in 1933 left the town with no senior level football club, but a campaign involving a town businessman and the local newspaper set the wheels in motion to form another club, and so Tamworth FC was born.

The club played its early football in the Birmingham Combination, switching to the Birmingham League (now known as the West Midlands League) in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that the club achieved notable success.

These were good times indeed for Tamworth FC, but it wasn’t to last. Despite gaining entry to the Southern League in 1972, the club’s fortunes went on a dramatic slide as the 1970s proved to be as cruel to Tamworth FC as the 1960s were kind. Attendances fell to record low levels, The Lamb fell into disrepair and it became a major effort just to keep the club alive. However, in 1984, a consortium of local businessmen (including the current Chairman Bob Andrews) took the club over and set about restoring it to its former glory. The club returned to the West Midlands League and gradually found their feet again, eventually winning the Championship in 1988 and regaining their Southern League status after a gap of four years. Vase winning manager Graham Smith left the club two years later and four other managers came and went in the space of the next four seasons as Tamworth consistently struggled to finish in mid-table positions. Then, in February 1995, former

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

Birmingham City player Paul Hendrie was appointed to the managerial hot seat. His impact on the club was instant as he turned another mediocre season around, eventually guiding the Lambs to within a point of promotion. Things were suddenly looking more promising again, and in 1996/97 the Southern League Midland Division Championship that the Tamworth fans so craved was won by the remarkable margin of 26 points. More seeds of success were sown in January 2001, when former European Cup winner Gary Mills was appointed manager. The Lambs were languishing in the bottom four of the Dr Martens Premier Division at the time, and staring relegation squarely in the face. In the space of just over a year he turned the club around, firstly by saving the club from the drop, and then by masterminding a fantastic Championship challenge in the 2001/02 season. However, just a few weeks later, Gary left Tamworth to take up the post of First Team Coach at Coventry City, and the club moved swiftly to appoint his assistant Darron Gee in the hot seat. Having been through the last day heartbreak of April 2002, Darron, and indeed the club as a whole, started the 2002/03 campaign with a renewed sense of purpose, determined not to slip up again and they were confirmed as Southern League Champions with 3 weeks left of the season. Gee stepped down to join Mills at Notts County and another former Birmingham City player Mark Cooper stepped up as the

new manager along with his friend and fellow team mate Richard Dryden as his assistant. Lack of progress in the league saw the duo leave The Lamb in January 2007and Gary Mills was welcomed back to The Lamb, six years and 7 days since he last took charge. Promotion to the back Conference National achieved with a game to spare in 2008-09 and after a battling 2009-10 season, Mills and Gee departed for York City a couple of months into last season. After a few games as caretaker manager, former Nottingham Forest star Des Lyttle, who had been at The Lamb since August 2007 as a player and as part of the coaching staff, was officially handed the reins but stepped down with four games to go and relegation a distinct possibility. So, academy coaches Dale Belford and Steve Hinks along with club captain Jay Smith took charge and it went to the wire North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

but they survived. Once the dust had settled on 2010-11, Marcus Law arrived at The Lamb as the new gaffer and FA Cup success came once again. Law rebuilt his squad during the summer of 2012 but found the going increasingly tougher and this cost him his position in early January 2013 meaning his assistant, Dale Belford, was asked to step in as caretaker manager once again and rescue the club from the drop with the highest ever top flight points haul. Dale continued as permanent boss into the 2013-14 season, although the side was ultimately relegated from the Conference Premier. A proud new Club President, 100 year old Lambs supporter Joe Perry heralded the Conference North season, but poor results continued and Belford parted by mutual consent to be replaced by new boss, successful former Wrexham player manager Andy Morrell.

RUSSELL FRY - A TRIBUTE In an age when footballers at all levels seem to move clubs regularly it is good to record North Ferriby United’s appreciation of a player who has reached the milestone of playing 400 games for the club. Russ is highly respected both by opposing clubs and by everybody at North Ferriby for his ability as a footballer. There is more than one club that would have welcomed Russ to their side over the years. Russ reached this momentous milestone when he came on as substitute against Stocksbridge Park Steels on 28 November

2015. Russ started his career at Hull City where he made two first team appearances. Whilst at City Russ gained an England Under-20 cap. As a schoolboy he had appeared for Wales. Unfortunately for Russ he was not able to claim a permanent contract at the club and he was loaned out to Conference sides Halifax Town and Hinckley United in 2006-7 before signing for Halifax for the start of the 2007-08 season. He moved quickly to Boston United and

York City before joining Ferriby on loan in November 2007. This deal then became permanent and since that date Russ has become a very welcome fixture in Ferriby’s line-ups. Russ made his Ferriby debut against Eastwood Town in November 2007 and he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. During his years at the club, Russ has won one Northern Premier League title, two Northern Premier League Cups, five East Riding Senior Cups plus last season’s momentous FA Trophy victory. His Manager, Billy Heath has this to say about Russ, “He is a real professional. He goes about everything in the correct manner and is a wonderful player to work with. Russ is a marvellous person on and off the field. He is the only player still here from when Bobby Carroll and myself took charge. He is a skilful and thoughtful player and it’s a tribute to him that he has reached 400 games for the club in an era when players readily change clubs.”

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

In some ways, Russ is the quiet man of the squad but everybody at the club acknowledges footballing ability and his commitment to the team. Russ can always be relied to give 100% in every game he plays. He plays his football calmly and effectively and never really seems ruffled on the pitch. Club co-owner and Joint-chairman Eman Forster commented, “In the two years that we/Steve and I have been owners of the club, it has been obvious how much respect all those connected with the club have for Russ. His skill as a footballer and his commitment to the club are to be commended and this tribute is fully justified.” His passing is precise and is a key part of The Villagers’ attacking game. Russ is a good striker of the ball and his ability to deliver accurate free-kicks and corners has led to many goals over the years. Like all midfielders, Russ is capable of scoring and had

notched up 49 goals in his first 400 games. Russ has been an integral part of Ferriby’s progress and success over the last few years. It goes without saying that he has performed consistently for the club. The fact that he has been able to progress from the Northern Premier League Premier Division to the National League North is testament to his ability. Many players find it difficult to play at a higher level when their clubs get promoted but Russ has managed it in style. Russ is now third in Ferriby’s alltime appearance list, behind Gary Bradshaw 417 games and Paul Sharp’s 498. When Russ arrived at Ferriby they were in a relegation fight at the time and Russ commented some time later, “I wondered what I was getting into and I thought, ‘What have I done?’. However, I wanted to

be playing games and took the opportunity. Strange as it seems, that season produced one of the most memorable games in my career. We went to Hednesford on the last day of the season needing a win to stay up. We got the win and the club has gone from strength to strength since then.” “Everything about the club suits me. It is a friendly place to be, from the owners right down to the supporters. As players we were, and still are, respected and well-looked after by those who run the club. I also like the club’s attitude to the way we play the game. Our success over the last three seasons in particular have provided memories that I will never forget. To play at Wembley and win was dream come true.” Russ is a big favourite with Ferriby’s supporters and they will be hoping that he will continue gracing the Eon Visual media Stadium for a few more seasons yet.

TAMWORTH Durrell (60)

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED

August 8, 2015 | National League North | The Lamb Ground | Att: 791 Ferriby went down 1-0 in a game from which they should have earned at least a point. Both sides finished with 10 players in a niggly and scrappy match that also saw 6 yellow cards.

The first-half was entertaining enough. Both sides attacked down the wings but neither keeper was rarely seriously troubled.

Tamworth’s only attempts up to this point were two free-kicks from Elliott Durrell, one of which narrowly went wide whilst the other was way off-target. The second-half opened in explosive fashion. Tamworth’s Smith was sent-off after 49 minutes for elbowing Tom Denton in the face.

Ferriby’s defence was generally strong and assured whilst the midfield nullified a large number of Tamworth’s attacks. Adam bolder and Curtis Bateson drove Ferriby forward and Tom Denton proved a handful for the Tamworth throughout the afternoon.

After 53 minutes a Nathan Hotte foul led to a melee involving many of the players. Once order had been restored Bolder was dismissed for violent conduct and Hotte received a yellow card for the initial foul.

Denton was unlucky after five minutes when his snap-shot was deflected for a corner. Eight minutes later Bolder’s free-kick reached Danny Hone but the defender was unable to get a clean shot and keeper James Belshaw saved.

Tamworth started another attack down the right through Newton. His low cross was only partially cleared to Durrell on the edge of the area and his low shot through a crowded penalty area found the bottom corner of the net.
