THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

CHRIS BOLDER

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Curzon Ashton to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Obviously we were disappointed with the final outcome of the Nuneaton Town game last weekend, but there were positives to take from the performance, especially the first 45 minutes. I think a turning point was losing Bobby Johnson through injury as he has that energy to be able to join in with the forward line and alleviate pressure on the defence. We showed a desire to want to work hard and compete for every ball which was pleasing with it being my first game in charge and is something that must be present in all future games. It does take time with new players coming in to gain a complete understanding of their teammates, but I thought they equipped themselves very well. Jack Walters played the game as if he had played at this level all of his non-league career, he was calm, composed and he will be a very important player for this club. Craig Nelthorpe worked tirelessly for us in a position that is not his favoured one, I know Craig well and the quality he has from having worked with him previously. As I mentioned, Bobby had to leave the field with an injury due to him opening up his knee joint. He has had some good treatment from the

physio this week and feedback is positive and we are hoping that he will be able to return for the Harrogate game. There were no other injury issues to report after the game which is a positive for the game this weekend. Although Curzon Ashton have not won in their past 4 league games they have shown already this season that they are capable of beating some good teams in the league. They have always been known as a side that likes to move the ball and they have brought in some players that they will be hoping gets them back to winning ways. Looking at their recent results it shows that the games have been very tight so we will be expecting a very tough encounter. We are working hard as a club to try and bring in some new faces, but these things can take time and it is really important that we get the right players for us moving forward. The current squad of players have shown an excellent professional attitude since I have come in and they are working hard to turn our results around. THE CAPTAIN

THE CAPTAIN Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Curzon Ashton in the National League North. We felt a lot more solid against Nuneaton Town as a team, especially in the first half. It’s difficult that we again conceded two goals and the way we did, but we have to focus on the positives and take these forward. We have things to work on and we have to work hard in training to improve as a team and individually. We need to keep working hard and making sure we do everything we can to get that win which can kick start a run of results for us. Confidence is a factor after such a poor run of results, but only we can go out there and turn it around. The manager has told us it’s a fresh start from now and we have to believe, like he does, that we can get out of this situation. It’s all about getting tht run of results together. Three wins on the bounce and it looks very different for us and momentum can take you away from the bottom very quickly. Simon Russell First-Team Captain

CURZON ASHTON

Both North Ferriby United and Curzon Ashton exited the FA Trophy last weekend and both will have designs on bouncing back with a return to league action. For Curzon, they fell short away against fellow National League North side Leamington. The visitors went ahead with only six minutes played when Matthew Crothers delivered a free-kick from the left which saw Niall Cummins attack, only for his shot to go in off the post. But Leamington hit back after the 40th minute when Joe Magunda glanced a header into the far corner. Into the second-half James Ballie deflected

a cross into his own net and Leamington sealed the win and progression when Liam Canavan converted a penalty. The defeat means Curzon haven’t won in their past five games in all competitions - a run which included two draws with Southport and Nuneaton Town. That has seen the club slide down the table to 13th, with 25 points picked up from their 20 games. For Ferriby’s part, they need to pick up results, with the threat of relegation becoming into focus with each passing week, but new manager Chris Bolder will be happy with an improved performance last weekend. THE OPPOSITION

CURZON ASHTON

RECENT HISTORY

Curzon Ashton FC was formed in 1963 following the amalgamation of Curzon Road and Ashton Amateurs. The newly-formed club joined the Manchester Amateur League, winning the title twice and finishing runners-up in their first three seasons. A step forward took them into the Manchester League, and after a period of consolidation a string of honours followed in the early 1970’s, amongst them runners-up in both the First and Premier Divisions, twice in respect of the latter. In 1977-78 they took the title by storm, winning a league and cup double and in 1978/79 Curzon become founder members of the Cheshire League Division Two, winning promotion at the first attempt, just missing out on the title, by just two points. After three years in the Cheshire League, Curzon once again became founder members of yet another competition, the North West Counties League (NWCL), in 1983/4 with the merger of the Cheshire League and Lancashire Combination League. Managers then quickly came and went with Steve Waywell being their fourth appointment in the space of 12 months when he was appointed in October 1987. Such were the on-field problems that relegation was only avoided when the League was expanded from 19 to 22 clubs. Waywell remained with the club until February 1993. The Club were competitive in the NPL First Division, but after they reached their highest finish of fourth in 1995-96, the following season, problems on and off the field beset Curzon, and their ten year NPL stay NPL. Terry McLean was handed the reins at the start of the season, only to resign in September. Changes in the boardroom brought with it more unrest within the club, and Dave Denby was placed in charge of team affairs, with Ged Coyne as his assistant. Denby remained until just after the New Year. Coyne took charge on a temporary basis, but he was unable to halt the clubs slide and with it relegation for the first time in their history. If relegation wasn’t enough, the club received a “double-whammy’ when they were placed in the Northern Counties East League (NCEL) following a meeting of the Northern Joint Liaison Committee, a decision which not only shocked officials of the club but many others. The much anticipated difficulties followed, and the club ended the season one place above the bottom club. The mistake was recognised and the NCEL Management Committee assisted the club in supporting their move back to the NWCL for the 1997/98 season. The club remained in the Second Division until under

the guidance of Joe Murty they gained promotion at the end of season 1999/2000, although Murty was relieved of his duties in June 2000, and Gary Lowe was appointed. The start of season 2005/06 was the beginning of an upturn in Curzon’s fortunes and after previous repeated attempts to return to the NPL they had to wait until season 2006/07 to benefit once again from the restructure of the pyramid system. Season 2007-2008, and the first back in to UniBond League, saw the club reach the promotions play-offs after leading the First Division North for most of the season. In the 2008-2009 season the club reached the Play-off Final, but were beaten by Newcastle Blue Star. Season 2009-2010 the club reached the Play-offs for the third consecutive season, but were again beaten in the semi-finals by the eventual winners Colwyn Bay. Season 2010-2011 saw the club once again the club reached the Play-offs for the fourth consecutive season and were again beaten by the eventual winners Chorley. This was the final season for manager Gary Lowe who called it a day after eleven seasons at the helm. The club appointed John Flanagan as Gary Lowe’s successor and would start the 2011-2012 season building a new team. In his first season in change John Flanagan took the club to the Play-off Final where they were beaten by Witton Albion. Making the Play-off Final in his first season in change was tremendous achievement but the most significant accolade was finishing the season in the clubs highest ever league position of second. 2012-2013 saw the club celebrate their 50th Season but in terms of league success, it was their worst for some time, the club finishing seventh and missing out on the play-offs for the first time since they rejoined the NPL. A team rebuild in the summer of 2013 saw the team get off to a flyer before clinching the league title. Season 2014-2015 saw Curzon compete at their highest ever level of the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division, and they reached the play-offs and, on another never to be forgotten day, beat Ilkeston 1-0 in the final. The win meant that Curzon would take another step up the non-league ladder with promotion to the National League North, and successive promotions for the only the second time in their history to put them at their highest ever level in the football pyramid. Season 2015-2016, Curzon Ashton FC finished in eleventh place in the Vanarama National League North. This achievement was the highest the club has ever achieved. NUNEATON TOWN

2

Elliott (58), Chambers (62)

Saturday 2 December 2017 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | National League North The result was, obviously, disappointing to Ferriby’s new manger Chris Bolder, but he would have taken heart from his side’s first-half display. It was a vital game for both sides with both in the relegation zone at the start of play. Unfortunately the defeat leaves Ferriby in even deeper trouble as they remain rooted to the foot of the table. There was more of a buzz around the ground before kick-off than there has been in recent games. This was raised even further by the Villagers’ first-half performance. At half-time it seemed as if this game could go either way. The first-half was relatively even though it was Nuneaton who looked the more threatening. Ferriby’s approach to the game was different. The ball stayed on the floor for much longer and they did get at the visitors’ defence. Unfortunately, little was created in the way of clear chances. Ferriby’s back four looked fairly solid against a Nuneaton side that attacked with pace down both wings. Striker Ashley Chambers was a major threat throughout the game. He is strong and has pace with the ability to hold-up the ball. Jake Picton and Jake Skelton looked more confident as the centre-back pairing and debutant Jack Walters had a solid debut. The return of Adam Bolder saw a stronger midfield with him and Simon Russell doing a sterling job in front of the back-four. Craig Nelthorpe, another debutant, worked 12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

hard as a striker, but he often had to go looking for the ball rather than receiving it. Ross Durrant made two good saves to keep the Villagers in the game. First, he denied Jordan Nicholson with a one-handed diving save and then produced reaction save to Brad Gascoigne’s close-range header. The closest Ferriby came to a goal was a Picton header from a Nelthorpe corner which caused some confusion in the six-yard area. The second-half was a different story. Nuneaton came out after half-time and immediately upped the tempo. They totally controlled the half in terms of possession and territory. Ferriby were penned back for most of the half and did not manage one real attempt at goal. It has been a familiar scenario this season and one which Chris Bolder will be looking to rectify quickly. Ferriby’s midfield and defence worked hard and tirelessly, but Nuneaton’s pace caused problems. Ashley Chambers, in particular, was a handful for Ferriby’s defence. Tom Elliott opened the scoring in the 58th minute. His first-time volley from Ryan Beswick’s corner found the top corner. Four minutes later Chambers sealed the victory. Ferriby lost the ball some thirty yards out and the ball reached Chambers who drilled-in a low shot. Nuneaton peppered Durrant’s goal but he was up to the challenge for most of their efforts
