CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Bower & Pitsea FC on this first Saturday afternoon of a brand new year, and after some warm hospitality and maybe a small little medicinal drink if you are not driving whilst watching an enjoyable game then have a safe return journey home. Before writing my notes may I wish everyone associated with this fine old club a happy New Year, whether they be a fellow director, manager, coach, player, sponsor, all of our volunteers, our Landlords, our league opponents and of course our own fine supporters.

They use it as a getaway for the children, something I would whole heartedly support, as I believe in the family unit and anything I can do that allows the family unit to be able to afford to watch their local team I will. Of course I did not decide on this initiative to make money with all my initiatives involving the Community the benefit to the family unit comes first. So as a personal gesture to those members or families that have not yet joined I will make this one off offer for the sum of £15.

May I also, once again, personally take this opportunity to welcome all those local residents that have decided to join us as new supporters through our £30 season ticket for a family of 4 initiatives that has been running for the last two seasons.

Any family that wishes to join and if the family is bigger than 4 so be it, and to those families that are already members and have bigger families larger than the agreed four see Mike Green and he will ensure you can also benefit from my New Year’s offer.

I have been informed on numerous occasions by members of these families that by joining the family season ticket initiative they are able to bring all of their family to watch the game.

I hope this initiative will be accepted by the local community as a gesture of goodwill from myself, we are a community club whether we are playing in the Thamesmead area or not. We all know we will not be playing at the SCT next season

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

although if discussions are completed as they are going at this time we shall be playing within the surrounding areas. And although this will be our last season playing out of SCT, I intend to continue with the season ticket initiative for the season 17-18, but until I can officially confirm where we are moving too I cannot work out the parameters of operating such a scheme, but watch this space we have no intention of losing your family support just because we have had to move to a new home. Also may I thank all the schools that have joined the passport scheme that allows all persons under the age of 14 to come to a match free of charge, yes totally free as long as they are accompanied by an elder who is only charged the concession price. This initiative hopefully will grow and bring young players to the club to join our development squads, our academy, under-21s and then the first-team, but if you do not want to play football and you just want to join our band of young supporters please do you are all very welcome.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

I must take a minute to thank Mike Green for the time and effort he has put into the work involving all of the schools initiatives, hopefully his hard work will result in a greater base of younger supporters watching our games and once again just because we are moving these initiatives will continue at our new home.

I am not stupid I know Tommy and the squad suffered grief during the months of October and November due to the results, everyone forgets the great FA Cup run Tommy took us on this season. In my considered opinion, criticism can be hard at times not all of us know how to deal with it especially young players, that’s when you see the best of a manager when you see a squad of players giving 100% at all times.

To date we have been advised that those schools that have visited us and spend a match as our guest have returned home and advised their parents how much they enjoyed the experience, but whatever scheme you are involved in you are always very welcome to SCT as the club’s guest. As most of you will know I have not been around for the last few weeks due to my ill health. I have been suffering from bronchitis with a little bit of pleurisy thrown in to make things interesting, but now I am well on the road to recovery although I must keep warm. Since I last wrote my programme notes at the beginning of December we have had a great run of results, 18 points out of a possible 21, and to be honest I am personally very pleased for Tommy, his management team and of course his squad of players. They have had to take a lot of negative press internal and external during the months of October and November due to bad results, but rather than letting it get them down, as professionals they have just got on with the job. Yes we could have bought in new players, but why bring in new players if they are no better than what you have, you will see with the couple of new signings we have made that we have gone for quality to blend into the squad we have at this time, may I welcome the latest players to join us

hear at TTFC. Tommy has always said to me that he knew he was nearly there, he felt they just needed the rub of the green something you never get when you are languishing down at the wrong end of the league table, who am I to argue with him? I bought him in as I felt one of the best non-league managers and I felt that Tommy coming to manage this club was a coup. I knew with him working in partnership with Ian Docker our Director of Football they would both drag this club into the 21st century and they are certainly doing that both on and off the field. I have been around the non-league game for over 40 years now with 30 years as an owner or chairman of a club and I know who are the really good managers are and Tommy comes well within this category and those managers that think they are but have in my opinion still have a lot to learn.

I too had personal criticism against me by a few saying why do I not consider getting a new manager in, but I can be honest about this next statement I had many chats with Ian and Tommy during those bad months and although I was very disappointed with results and our position Tommy always said let’s wait until after Christmas and we can go from there. So at no time did I consider a change in management all due to the positivity Tommy always gave me during our conversations, so I feel that my unconditional support of him and his squad of players has been totally vindicated, but no as always you must have faith in your own convictions and I am no different. So let’s continue supporting the manager and his squad and I am sure the club will continue to rise up the table, as I have said on many occasions I am not interested in what other clubs are doing, what they might be paying their players, I am the owner of this club that is something I can control therefore I am only interested in this club and hopefully next season having the opportunity of getting the club promoted. Enjoy the match! Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our visitors to Bayliss Avenue today – the players, officials and supporters of Bowers & Pitsea. It’s good to be home for our first home game of 2017 after two road trips that ended the old year and began the new one on Monday. I didn’t think that we played too badly in our last home game despite losing 0-1 to Phoenix – either team could have won it on the day and they cashed in on our mistake! It was one of them games – I think that in truth a draw would have

been a fair result. But then to go to Tilbury on New Year’s Eve – what a recovery that was after Boxing Day!

to the end they were putting their heads in and bodies on the line – it was a great win!

We hit them for five and anyone who was there would agree I’m sure that it could have been even more in what were horrendous conditions, I was so proud with the way the boys bounced back from Boxing Day.

We’re delighted to have Ellis Brown on board and I was pleased with his goal at Aveley – just what a manager wants to see a ball in from the man wide on the left scored by the one on the right.

Then on Monday against another side that were up there, we dominated again and should have put the game to bed before half-time. But that said, I thought we defended brilliantly from Tom all the way through the back four – right

I tried to get him in the summer, but understandably he went to a Conference South club and wanted to play at that level. We tried to get him on loan and that didn’t come off either and it finished up being third time lucky as Tony Burman texted

“We’re delighted to have Ellis Brown on board...I tried to get him in the summer and on loan!” 06

MANAGER’S NOTES

me to say that he needed to free some funds up to bring in a new player and was I still interested in Ellis.

twenty-one points out of twentyfour which of course I know is exactly the same as Bowers.

Thankfully this time he’s agreed to come and play for us getting some games in which will help both him and us.

But we’re on a bit of a run ourselves and we’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing. We can make life easier for ourselves but as long as we keep winning then that’s the main thing.

Today is a huge game for us, but as I’ve said countless times before this season, I don’t care who we play. If it’s the bottom of the league or the top, or near top, I’ll approach the game completely the same. Anyone, as has been proven again over Christmas, can beat anyone and vice versa, so for us to get six points out of nine. I’m delighted especially when you add it into the longer run of taking

Greenie told me about a tweet on Monday that mentioned our “overwhelming away support!” I must confess that made me smile, but you do make a difference believe me. I just hope that those who follow us away can make yourselves heard today as at the moment our away games are sounding like home games thanks to your backing.

Our support has been great this year – I know we’ve been frustrating which makes the backing you give us terrific. Now we appear to have turned the corner and are beginning to get the results that we deserved all the way down the line, with your help and backing who knows how far we can go in the second half of the season. See you in the Mead Bar after the game and don’t forget we’ve another busy week ahead – at Romford on Wednesday night and then here again next Saturday… Cheers Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. Our first home game of 2017 sees us welcome Bowers & Pitsea to Bayliss Avenue today. It was a great end to the year for the boys seeing us win 5 games back to back and securing a great 2-0 win on Monday away to Aveley. We’ve had a number of the boys out of the squad with illness

over the past few weeks and we hope to have them back today fighting fit. Joe Vines has been missing from the squad with a hamstring injury over recent weeks, we saw him return to the bench on Monday and make an appearance following Leon’s clash with an Aveley players elbow.

and will be back under the knife over the next few weeks to have the metal wires removed from his knee. Wishing him all the best for this and a speedy recovery from the op. That’s all from me I hope you enjoy the game, Carly Payne First-team Physio

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Good afternoon welcome to SCT for today’s Ryman League match, we welcome our visitors Bowers and Pitsea, I believe this may be their first visit to Thamesmead and we hope they enjoy their brief stay with us. Without a doubt our season has taken a dramatic upturn winning seven of our last eight matches, having collected 21 points we have moved up to 15th in the table! A position that a few weeks ago never looked possible, all credit to Tommy, Alex and the players, they’ve put in some solid performances which has earned points at Tilbury and Aveley.

There is a buzz around the club and dressing room that winning brings. Today’s opponents Bowers and Pitsea are an unknown opponent to us having been promoted this season from the Essex League, they have made a great start and reports of their performances have been very good. They too have just had a nine match unbeaten run end having lost 1-5 on Monday against Witham so I’m sure they will be looking to get that defeat out of their system.

released Richard Butler to VCD, Merrick James – Lewis to Hendon, Tyler McCarthy to Great Wakering and also released Connor French. We do however welcome to the club Elis Brown who has recently signed from Dartford, we hope Ellis enjoys his time with The Mead. We are away to Romford on Wednesday in a re-arranged fixture kick-off at Thurrock F.C is 7:45pm. Enjoy today’s match.. Dave Joy Club Secretary

Thamesmead Town’s surge up the table continued with a profitable festive period.

Granted the club suffered a 1-0 defeat to Phoenix Sports on Boxing Day, but found the perfect tonic of recovery by resistering back-to-back wins over Tilbury and Aveley. The Mead will again have to be at their clinical best against a Bowers & Pitsea side who are pushing for the automatic promotion places. That said, Thamesmead will take

heart from not only their own performance but the previous display by Bowers which saw them slip to a shock 5-1 loss to Witham Town. Their latest defeat brought an end to their three game winning run that saw them claim a three-point haul over Waltham Abbey, Great Wakering Rovers and Cheshunt. Having conceded just two goals in that sequence, while scoring ten times, made their recent loss all the more damaging.

CLUB HISTORY Phoenix Sports Club was formed in 1935 as St. Johns Welling which later changed its name to Lakeside. After the Second World War they reformed and renamed Phoenix as it was seen to be rising from the ashes of the previous two clubs amid the destruction of the blitz. The club began life in an old wooden cricket pavilion in 1947 on the site of what is now Pitsea Market. A move to Gun Meadow, Pitsea saw the purchase of a prefabricated building which was used as changing rooms. The building of the new A13 from Canvey to the Five Bells roundabout saw the compulsory purchase of the ground and the club’s move to its current home at Crown Avenue, Pitsea. The ground was purchased from Basildon Development Corporation along with a prefabricated building which still serves as the dressing rooms. After the war years, once stability had come to the nation, many new sporting clubs sprang up. One such club was our own, BOWERS UNITED, started in 1946 by Bert Salmon, playing at Gun Meadow, Pitsea, in the Thurrock & Thameside Combination, he was to be joined a few years later by his brother Len Salmon, who passed away and is sorely missed by everyone within the club.

The biggest tribute Bowers Sport & Social Club could give him was to name his beloved football stadium after him. Bowers United won the Essex Senior League title and the Essex Senior League cup in 1998/99 under Tony Cross and were also runners up in the Harry Fisher Trophy. They won the Don Douglas Trophy for top scorer with David Hope as well as the secretary of the year award. Season 2004/05 saw a new name on the footballing map when Bowers United took Pitsea Football clubs name to produce BOWERS & PITSEA FOOTBALL CLUB, and with a new start and a new team at the helm success was just around the corner because a strong link was established with the local community and the clubs facilities that offered the residence a large Clubhouse, Bar and Function room Together with a ground capacity for 1500+ spectators, which includes seating for 180 in a well appointed stand, excellent floodlighting is also an advantage at a higher level in which to play our football on. This showed that after years of being in the wilderness, Bowers & Pitsea Football Club (formerly Bowers United) now intended to take the football side of the club forward.

THE OPPOSITION

bring success to the club both on and off the field of play. The recent improvements to the ground and surrounding area as well as the Social Club helped Bowers & Pitsea Football Club to achieve their goal when Rob Small was appointed manager in 2014/15 and in his first season took the club to runners up in the league as well as winning the Essex Senior League Challenge Cup alongside his team of Harry Stevens and Wayne Franklin and with the leagues top scorer award and the league secretary of the year award things were finally looking up for the football club. In season 2015/16 Rob Small topped his haul from the previous season by winning the Essex Senior League Championship, getting to the quarter finals of the Essex Senior Cup but more impressive was reaching the semi-finals of the FA Vase were Bowers were narrowly beaten by eventual winners Morpeth Town 2-1 away after drawing the home leg 2-2. We finally achieved one of our goals to reach and play in the Ryman’s League and hope that this season we will see the Red and White flag flying high. Rob Small has kept Wayne Franklin and has added Frank Everett and Joe Corey Jnr to the team alongside Letitia Chapple the physio and we hope to see more success in the coming years.

Good afternoon everyone.

forward.

Our scholars have returned after their Christmas break and Gary has been putting them through their paces with fitness work and continued with their technical development.

Our first Academy trials for our September 2017 intake (based here at the SCT) will be held on Thursday 16th February with a 10.30am start. Open to 16-18 year olds – full details from me at Academy_ thamesmeadtownfc@outlook. com

It’s been a busy week as on Thursday our new apprentices signed their contracts to start a scheme that will all hope will be something really exciting for the club and the players. As I mentioned in previous programme notes, we are now covering all bases with our in house scholars here at the SCT, our satellite centre at Northfleet Technology College, and now our new Apprenticeship scheme at Long Lane JFC. These now allow young players the opportunity to have a choice of pathways into the U21 team and possibly the first-team, whilst being able to choose the education package that suits their respective needs, which is something which the chairman, first-team manager and I – with both academy and Director of Football “hat’s” on – all strongly believe is the correct way

Our current academy boys return to league action on Wednesday with a home game with Three Bridges – not sure at time of writing if it will start at 1:00pm or 2:00pm; I will ask Mike to post the confirmed kick off time on the website and social media early next week! The boys played Phoenix Sports yesterday in a friendly in preparation and fingers crossed – if you’ve got a spare couple of hours on Wednesday please pop along and support the boys! Let’s hope it’s another three points for Tom and the lads after a magnificent run of games. Yours in sport. Ian Docker Academy Manager

PHOENIX SPORTS Power (67)

There was little to cheer for Mead fans at Bayliss Avenue on Boxing Day as Phoenix literally “Powered” their way to three festive points snapping the Mead’s winning run in the process! A goal midway through the second-half from Michael Power (who was making his Phoenix debut after moving from Greenwich Borough) proved to be enough to win the game, but the truly breath-taking save that denied Paul Vines his 17th goal of the season late on was a real killer blow to the home side. After a first half where the Mead were definitely the better side, the gaffer would have been disappointed that his side weren’t in front at the break. Jay Porter fizzed an early shot just

over before Alex Teniola sent an overhead kick wide. Ellis Green fired in a shot that Phoenix keeper Phillips did well to beat out, before Alex will feel he could have done better after Harvey Brand did well down the right – Alex didn’t really get hold of his header which went over. The visitors almost (against the run of play) took the lead just before half time, but Tom Wellham got down well to push Patterson’s low shot away. It was a warning that the Mead sadly didn’t heed as the second half got under way and the visitors enjoyed chances of their own.

Tom did well to shovel a Carvell shot round the post before the same player shaved the Meads right post with a fierce drive. The Mead responded Thamesmead Town Line-Up well and Substitutes 1. Power picked up a clearance from Tom, left Nathan Simpson in a heap on the floor as he powered forward, before giving the Mead keeper no chance with a thumping drive from the edge of the box. The visitors now had their tails up and FairweatherJohnson was desperately unlucky when his shot hot the inside of a post and rolled along the goal-line. Carvell would have doubled the lead but for a brilliant goal saving challenge from Nathan as the Phoenix man looked certain to score. The Mead rallied and Jay looped a header over the keeper only to see the ball scrambled off of the line before Phillips produced a save that wouldn’t have been equalled anywhere on Boxing Day. A slow patience build up down the right saw the ball played into the edge of the box and as Scott Kinch laid the ball into his path, Vinesy drilled in a shot that the keeper couldn’t have seen till the last minute which made his tip over save even more remarkable! So the Mead’s winning run comes to an end after five games.

And as I’ve said before as well, there isn’t an easy game in this league, it doesn’t matter who you play against, you know it will be a tough battle!”

Butcher was hopelessly short when attempting a punch before the ball was sliced high into the air before being hacked away.

Keeper Tom then excelled keeping out a stunning Smith free-kick that fizzed round the wall – the Mead stopper plunging to his right to tip the ball round the post. to sweep home Alex’s pass to double the advantage and then returned the favour on 54 minutes by playing a super ball through for Alex to race clear and coolly ghost past the keeper to roll the ball home. The home side then received a belated Christmas present to get back into the game. Barham charged down Tom’s attempted clearance and as the pair collided referee Heavey after being called over by an assistant (who was at least thirty yards further away than the man with the whistle), gave the spot kick which Martin duly despatched giving the home side hope they barely deserved with twenty minutes left! It was hope that was soon extinguished when Lewis Knight fired home his first goal for the club – and what a goal it was; magnificently drilling a half cleared corner into the top corner leaving a bemused Butcher motionless! Bode then sealed the win with a fine low drive from the edge of the box in stoppage time.

Second half goals from Paul Vines – his 17th of the season – and a second from Ellis Brown on his first start for the club cemented the Mead’s seventh win in eight games. But once again the central defensive partnership of Lewis Knight and Leon Smith proved vital to the victory which statistically at least llifted the side to mid table – thirteen points off the Play-Off zone and eleven ahead of the drop one; a far cry from the position just one month ago when the club was rock bottom of Ryman One North. The Gaffer was understandably delighted, “I thought we defended magnificently today,” he told us, “all the way from Tom through the back three at the end – people putting their head’s in and bodies on the line. It was a great win!

through tackles on the edge of the box before Tom was able to turn the ball around the right post. Aveley keeper Joseph-Johnson then kept the score-line blank by a fine low save to keep out Bode’s drive before the visitors went close twice in quick succession. From Jay’s deep cross, Kinchy was denied by a good block from the keeper and as the ball looped up, Vinesy saw his header cleared off the line by Odamo. The home side then had their best opportunity of the opening half when Coyne’s free-kick was well beaten out by Tom diving to his right.

Ellis Brown then almost gave the Mead the lead just after the break as he prodded the ball past JosephJohnson only to see defenders clear the ball away, and despite the home side having a couple of shots It was a tight and fiercely contested from distance, the first hour ended opening half Toner had the game’s goal-less. Ellis Brown then literally first real chance as he battled turned the game with a Thamesmead Town Line-Up brilliant run that 1. Tom Wellham Substitutes left blue shirted 2. Harvey Brand defenders in 3. Nathan Simpson 12. Joe Vines his wake until 4. Scott Kinch 13. Ike Feehi that is his run 14. Michael Ademiluyi 5. Lewis Knight was crudely 6. Leon Smith 15. referee Lowe pointed to the spot. Up stepped Vinesy to drill the penalty home, for his 17th of the season and his fifth in his last six games. The home side tried desperately to get a foot hold, the Mead back line excelled – repelling wave after wave of Aveley attacks, and whilst the two central defenders were outstanding the contributions made by the two full backs cannot be underestimated as the unit as a whole kept the main Aveley threat – Marson Bloomfield (who has attracted interest from Football League scouts, and had again at this game) reasonably quiet as the home side were restricted for the most part to efforts from distance. Indeed from one such attack, Nathan did very well to clear the ball away when Tom for once was struggling! The win was sealed late on when Jay sprinted away down the left and as he rolled the ball across the face of goal, Brownie walked the ball into the empty net with the “offside” appeals from home players and supporters alike falling on deaf ears. The Mead now return home to face another side – Bowers & Pitsea – who have also been on an amazing run on Saturday. Monday’s 1-5 defeat at Maldon was the division’s new boy’s first league defeat in ten games after they had won the previous nine!

THE UNDER-21S

THE

UNDER-21s Hello everyone – I hope you had a great new year and are ready for what we all hope will be a good 2017 for the football club.

already progressed four of this year’s academy during the course of the season and I am sure of more to come!

The boys began their postChristmas campaign this week when we hosted Harlow Town on Tuesday night and got 2017 off to a winning start thanks to goals for Sam Skates and the ever reliable Gary Mulgrew.

The first team have been superb over the last month – what a month it’s been for the gaffer, OB and all players and staff – and it has genuinely rubbed off in both the under-21’s and to an extent in the academy boys too.

Even though the boys had a break from playing, we’ve been busy off the pitch and I’m delighted to welcome three more players to our ever growing squad – Gilberto Belayo, Kieran McMahon and Emmanuel Paul.

It goes without saying that everyone connected with the twenty ones wish Tom, OB and the lads our very best wishes for today and we all hope that they keep this fantastic run going.

Indeed, over the past few months I can’t begin to say how pleased I am with the development and progression that I’ve seen in this group of players this season. Let’s hope this year we continue to learn the game in the way we have for the last few months. We’ve got some very decent players coming through the ranks – and it’s the same with the academy – the lads we have at the club are very keen to learn and its enjoyable to spend the days coaching these lads on a daily basis with Ian. We have

We’re back in action next Thursday – the twelfth – when we head to Billericay, but before I end today I would like to put on record my thanks for all of our helpers behind the scenes that put so much into everything we achieved in 2016 – without you we wouldn’t have taken the club as far forward as we have done. So Richard, Jamie, Jermaine, Martin, Paul and Mark – many thanks, and I daren’t leave out Keith for his help on the gate. Here’s to 2017 guys!
