BRADFORD PARK AVENUE North Ferriby United will be looking to get back to winning ways on home soil when they entertain Bradford Park Avenue this afternoon.

November looked to be heading for a perfect set of results before losses to Nuneaton Town and Stocksbridge Park Steels at the end of the month. The FA Trophy holders will have been disappointed to have exited the FA Trophy at the first hurdle but must now concentrate on the league with promotion still in their sights.

CLUB INFORMATION Founded | 1907 Nickname | The Avenue Ground | Horsfall Stadium Chairman | Bob Andrews 2014/15 Position | 13th (Conference North) Honours | FA Cup Winners - 1912/13, 1919/20, 1945/46 Northern Premier League Division One Champions - 2000/01 Northern Premier League Division One North Champions - 2007/08

The club bounced back from two successive defeats by beating Chorley 3-2 in dramatic circumstances. Today’s opponents Bradford Park Avenue arrive at the Eon Visual Media Stadium in good form with the side now seven games unbeaten in all competitions.

MANAGER: Martin Drury Martin was appointed manager in May of 2015 at the age of just 29, after almost a season serving as assistant following his untimely retirement from playing due to injury. As a player he was a left back who played for Sheffield United, Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford (Park Avenue).

Three points for the Avenue could see them climb up to 11th whilst a win for Ferriby would close the gap at the top to just a point.

He joined Avenue in 2009 and went on to make over 170 appearances for the club. North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

CLUB HISTORY Bradford FC began playing association football in 1895, alternating home Saturdays at Park Avenue with the Northern Union. The club shared the West Yorkshire League championship with Hunslet in 1895–96, also winning the Leeds Workpeople’s Hospital Cup. Bradford played in the FA Amateur Cup in 1896–97, progressing to the FA Cup in 1897–98 and 1898–99.

League (although the club was based in the north) and filling a gap left by Fulham (who joined the Football League). Their nearest opponents were Northampton Town, whose ground was 130 miles distant. In 1908, Bradford FC was elected to the Second Division of the Football League. The club was promoted to the First Division in 1914 after finishing second, and achieved its highest-ever league position (ninth) at the end of the 1914–15 season. In

The club entered the Yorkshire League in 1897–98, finishing next to last, and was banished to Birch Lane the following season (where it fared little better). Bradford’s first football club was closed down at the end of the 1898–99 season due to mounting losses. Despite the failure of this early experiment, association-football success elsewhere prompted the club to abandon rugby in 1907 and apply to join the Football League. They were not accepted, instead joining the Southern North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

1914 Donald Bell played four games, but at the outbreak of war asked to be released to serve. Rising to the rank of lieutenant, in 1916 he received the VC for conspicuous bravery on the Somme before being killed later that year. After the First World War the club began a steady decline, relegated to the Second Division in 1921 and to the Third Division North in 1922. In 1928, the club were the Division 3N champions and were promoted back to

the Second Division. They were relegated again in 1950, and placed in the Fourth Division after a 1958 reorganisation. Although the club won promotion to the Third Division in 1961, they were relegated back to the Fourth Division in 1963. After several difficult seasons, in 1970 they were replaced in the Football League by Cambridge United. The club joined the Northern Premier League, selling Park Avenue in 1973 and sharing facilities with Bradford City. Bradford Park Avenue went into liquidation on 3 May 1974 with debts of £57,652 ($95,517), and immediately re-formed as a Sunday league club playing in the league club’s former colours. After playing at Bingley Road and Hope Avenue in 1974 in Bradford Amateur Sunday League Division Four, the club moved to Avenue Road and won promotion in 1975. The next season, they were again promoted into the newly

formed Bradford Sunday Alliance League. Although the stands and other buildings at Park Avenue were demolished in 1980, the playing field and terraces remained. The stadium was renovated for amateur football during the mid-1980s, and the Sunday League club played a full season there in 1987–88. However, it was forced to move out at the end of the season to accommodate an indoor cricket school on part of the pitch. A new club was formed to return Bradford Park Avenue to Saturday football for the 1988–89 season, joining the West Riding County Amateur Football League and then the Central Midlands League. The club moved to the North West Counties League the following season, playing matches at rugby-league grounds such as Bramley and Mount Pleasant, Batley). The Sunday side formed in 1974 merged with the new Saturday club during the early

1990s. In 1995 Bradford Park Avenue won the North West Counties League, re-joining the Northern Premier League and moving to Horsfall Stadium. At the beginning of the 2004–05 season they were founding members of the Conference North, although they were relegated to the Northern Premier League at the end of the season (after finishing seventh) and to Northern Division North the following season. The club returned to the Northern Premier League as champions in the 2007–08 season. The club reached the FA Cup quarterfinals in 1912–13, 1919–20 and 1945–46. Since reforming they have reached the first round three times, in 2003– 04, 2011–12 and 2012–13. Their best performance in the League Cup was a third-round replay in 1962–63. Since dropping into non-league football, the club’s best FA Trophy performance has been the fourth round in 1998–99. In the FA Vase, the club reached the second round in 1994–95. In February 2008, chief executive Bob Blackburn unveiled plans for a 20,000-seat stadium at Phoenix Park in Thornbury, within the Leeds metropolitan district, but the site had to be sold before this was realized. In July 2008 Blackburn predicted on a supporters’ forum that the club would reach the Football League within four years (an achievement no longer possible). In 2012, Bradford gained promotion to the Conference North by beating F.C. United of Manchester 1–0 in the playoff final.

MATCH REPORT 4 4

BRADFORD PARK AVENUE Chilaka (14, 20, 70) Marshall (57)

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Bateson (19, 28) Denton (30) Kendall (42)

August 29, 2015 | National League North | Horsfall Stadium | Att: 226 The scoreline may seem to indicate that this was a really entertaining game but good football was in short supply. Both defences looked jittery at times. In fact, Ferriby defended better after Hotte’s dismissal. Ferriby had the better of the opening 10 minutes with Tom Denton and Ryan Kendall both going close. Bradford’s response was two efforts that did not trouble Adam Nicklin. Bradford took the lead after 14 minutes. Craig King’s cross saw Chilaka head home unchallenged at the far post. Five minutes later The Villagers were level. Curtis Bateson burst past the defence on the left and pushed the ball past keeper Myles Wright as he hesitated. Chilaka again went ahead within a minute. He broke through the defence to go round Nicklin and score from a narrow angle. Ferriby restored parity after 28 minutes. Ben Middleton’s throw was cleared back to him. His low cross was blasted home by Bateson from eight yards. Tom Denton took the lead after 30 minutes with a shot that hit both posts before crossing the line. Kendall looked to have settled the game after 42 minutes. He burst down the left before cutting-in and rounding Wright to slot home the ball. The Villagers almost increased their lead just after half-time when Russ Fry’s deep free-kick was

headed on to the top of the bar and over. Bradford pulled a goal back after 57 minutes. The Villagers’ defence stood-off and Richard Marshall fired an unstoppable 25-yard drive into the top corner. There was worse to come for Ferriby two minutes later with Hotte’s harsh dismissal. The equaliser came after 70 minutes. A three-man move left Chilaka with space to complete his hattrick from 10 yards. Credit goes to The Villagers for defending well in the last half-hour. The players worked hard to limit Bradford’s goal threat and the point was hard-earned but well-deserved. However, it was disappointing to concede four goals in this game after only letting-in four in the previous five. It is equally disappointing to score four goals away from home and still not win.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S

Sam Shepherd sums up the latest Ferriby results and pays tribute to Russell Fry... Well that wasn’t in the script was it? The holders of the FA Trophy crashing out in the third qualifying round was a huge surprise to everyone except Stocksbridge who played very well against us and deserved their victory. It is definitely a disappointment to be out of both cup competitions before Christmas, especially the FA Trophy after the euphoria of last season but I believe it could end up being a blessing in disguise for Ferriby. We are very well placed in the league with just Fylde and Nuneaton ahead of us and we now have only the league to focus on whereas other clubs still have cup competitions to distract them. If we can push on and keep winning with no cup distractions I am confident of making the play-offs at least this season.

Russell Fry recently made his 400th appearance for Ferriby and I would like to congratulate him on this achievement. Russ really is “Mr Ferriby” and has been very well liked on and off the pitch throughout his years at the club. Fry has been an integral part of the clubs success over the past few seasons winning two Doodson Cups, the Evo Stik League title and the FA Trophy. It can’t all be good for a player and unfortunately this season Russ missed the decisive penalty against Stalybridge in the FA Cup. I have never seen someone look so disappointed after missing a penalty in a shootout and that optimises how much the club means to him and the response of the fans and fellow players North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

after the penalty miss showed how valued Fry is at Ferriby. Well done Russ on your 400 appearances and here’s to many more in the green and white. Today we face Bradford Park Avenue in another tough league game in this busy festive period. This period of the season can define whether it’s going to be a mediocre or a successful season and hopefully we can put a few wins together to keep us right up at the sharp end of the league table. Following today we face our local rivals Gainsborough which will see the return of both Anthony Wilson and Nathan Jarman amongst others. Our defence are going to have their work cut out that’s for sure! Enjoy the game, Sam

A cold afternoon in November by Nick Quantrill A pub close to Hull...

‘You look like you’re freezing, mate.’ ‘I am.’ ‘Been raining?’ ‘All afternoon. Didn’t stop.’ ‘You should have stayed here with me in the warmth, had a drink. Seen the scores? Rooney’s missed another sitter.’ ‘Past it, isn’t he?’ ‘Too much too young. It’s the English disease. That Jeff Stelling, though. Should have heard him going on about it, like he could have done any better.’ ‘Talking nonsense?’ ‘Hasn’t stopped shouting since I got here. Don’t know why I bother listening to him. Going on about Vardy’s old team from Sheffield now.’ ‘That’s who I just watched.’ ‘What was the score?’ ‘Got beat 2-1. Not even Denton could get his head on one today.’ ‘That’s that, then. Out of the cup. Don’t know why you bother going there, mate.’ ‘Why not?’ ‘It’s not real football, is it?’ ‘And watching Wayne Rooney in the pub is?’ ‘You know what I mean. They’re not as good, are they? It’s not the same.’ ‘It’s different, I’ll give you that. It’s got a heart and soul for starters.’ ‘You reckon people like Rooney don’t love the game?’ ‘I doubt he loves it like those who turn up every week despite the weather at places like Ferriby.’ ‘Like that lot on the Salford City programme the BBC showed?’ ‘Just like that of, but without the cameras being there to make sure they’re noticed. You don’t get any of that cheating, either, or the rolling around like they’ve been shot by a sniper when they go down.’ ‘I suppose that Stelling can be an idiot.’ ‘And Rooney’s pretty much finished.’ ‘True enough.’ ‘Coming to the next game, then?’ ‘I reckon I might do.’ Format shamelessly borrowed from Roddy Doyle’s, “Two Pints”.
