THE MANAGER

TERRY

SPILLANE

I’d like to welcome you all to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome Soham Town Rangers to our home ground. Welcome to the SCT for today’s game with Soham. First up today, it came to my attention that a supporter was in earshot of some “industrial language” used at a recent home game. Please accept my/ our apologies for this! To the action now since my last notes and last week we picked up three hard earned points away at GWR. It’s always a tough place to go, it’s in a very open position so there always seems to be a strong wind blowing. Add to that the pitch has a distinctive slope which definitely has an impact so we were very pleased with the result. We started brightly and were 04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

putting GWR under pressure with high tempo football and were awarded a penalty on 4 mins when their defender clearly handled the ball. Up stepped Butts to put us 1-0 ahead. We continued to press but on the 10th min mark after getting hit on the break we conceded a penalty for handball from which they equalised. It was a topsy turvey game from then on as both defences really struggling with the conditions and chances for both sides were being created. On the 20 minute mark Theo put as back in the lead as he picked up a loose ball on the edge of their area and side footed home to put us 2-1 up.

Just 5 mins later tho once again we lost concentration and gave another penalty away from which they equalised to make the score 2-2. On 35 minutes the very impressive (and my m.o.m on the day) Harrison picked the ball up out wide, cut in and hit an unstoppable shot into the corner which turned out to be the winner and once again put us in the lead. The second-half we improved defensively as a team, despite the conditions getting worse which made it very difficult for our boys and although not perfect we managed to keep a clean sheet in the last 45 mins which we had asked for during our half-time talk.

We had further chances to increase our lead but it was one of those days for our boys in front of goal. At the final whistle we were very happy with the result and at this stage of the season it’s results not performances that matter!!

are very grateful for. Don’t forget we’re at home again next Saturday when we’ll be doing our bit for Sport Relief and good luck to all those taking part in our very own version of the “Sport Relief Mile”! Come on you Mead!

Once again our few loyal supporters were there to cheer the boys on which as always we

THE BOARDROOM

PAUL

BOWDENBROWN

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Soham Town Rangers to our home at SCT this Saturday afternoon, and hope after an enjoyable game and refreshments everyone has a safe journey home. Firstly an apology from me as at the time of writing I don’t know whether I will be able to attend the game having had more hospital tests at the end of this past week - I don’t actually know where I will be come 3:00pm on Saturday afternoon! It was with sadness this week that we waved good bye to our club captain to join up with our former managers at VCD. I would like to wish Derek well for the future and I would like to thank him for the service that he’s given

06

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

the club during his stay, especially during the time when he has been our club captain. He leaves the SCT with my very best wishes and I’m sure that you our supporters will echo my sentiments. Its been a little over a month now since I announced that we would continue our £30.00 Family Season Ticket into 2016/2017, and I’d like to thank our current holders for their support and backing for the scheme. We hope to have full details and the new application forms available for

our home game on Good Friday. I’d just like to wish all of those who are joining Greenie on our very own Sport Relief Mile next Saturday - personally I didn’t know Mike had it in him to do a mile, but it is for charity I suppose! Seriously, best of luck to everyone involved for raising money for such a great charity. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman & Managing Director

CARLY’S CORNER

CARLY’S

CORNER

In her regular column this year first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list...

Good afternoon all... Welcome today to Bayliss Avenue as our boys take on Soham Town Football Club. It’s been a quiet week for us as our midweek game against Haringey Borough was subject to a late pitch inspection and subsequently postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. After an eventful 3-2 win over

Great Wakering Rovers last Saturday we saw ourselves move 2 places up the league to 9th place. With Play-off places still within our reach albeit at a stretch three points today is a must to keep the dream alive! In injury news it’s been a funny few weeks with a couple of the boys picking up silly injuries, I suspect there may be one or

two fitness tests ahead of today’s game. At the crunch point of the season everyone wants to be playing and the whole squad will be fighting for their spot today in the starting VI. Enjoy the game and have a safe journey home. Carly Payne First Team Physio THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Soham Town Rangers

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Welcome to SCT for our home Ryman League fixture with Soham Town Rangers, I hope they enjoy their short stay with us. Last Saturday saw us travel to Great Wakering Rovers, three points were a must as we now need to pick up a string of points to remain with any sort of chance to reach the Play-off, I know that speaking with Terry he fully believes that we can still make the Play-off positions, we may need results to go in our favour to do that but all we can do is keep winning!

We had to graft for the three points at Great Wakering, difficult conditions made football impossible, Harrison Carnegie got a screamer to earn us the victory and the three points made the journey home all that much better! The ongoing saga with our match with Haringey continues, last Tuesday’s game which was at Tilbury was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, we will try and get it played at the 5th time of asking.

playing Tilbury here at SCT, they are in a similar position to us and have their eye on a Play-off place too so it should be a tough encounter. Little on the playing front to report but we do have Jack Barry, Marc Gorbell and Farrai Hallam suspended for the next two matches so the squad will be a tad smaller for a while! Enjoy the match. THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Soham Town Rangers have had a remarkable turn of form since January. The club has picked up 13 points from their last five games and are unbeaten in as many too. Wins over Brightlingsea Regent, Redbridge, Harlow Town and AFC Hornchurch along with an away point at Barkingside have propelled the club up to 15th place in the Ryman Division One North table. The Play-offs may be just out of reach for the club sitting on 44 points but the club have been performing well and have been heading in the right direction. The Mead will know about their upturn in fortunes and will want to get off to a good start when Soham visit the SCT. Three points for Thamesmead is vital in their hunt for the Play-offs.

THE OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY

Soham Town Rangers were formed in 1947 as a result of a merger between Soham Rangers and Soham Town.

The Julius Martin Lane ground, which at the time was the home of Soham Town, is still the home of the club today, after it was purchased in 1952. The new club started life in the Cambs League, also running a Reserve team. In 1956, they joined the Peterborough League where they were to remain until 1963. During their time there, they won the league and the league cup on three separate occasions. A measure of the level of support enjoyed by non-league clubs in those days was the fact that on their first home game of the season, on August 22nd 1956, a local derby against near neighbours Ely City, over 500 match day programmes were sold - Unfortunately, the 6-2 drubbing for the hosts took the shine off the day. The club joined the Eastern Counties League in 1963, and remained there until 2008. During this time, considerable ground development has taken place - The social club was built in 1968, new dressing rooms and showers were erected in 1979, along with a grandstand extension. In 1981, a lounge bar extension was added to the social club. Floodlights were erected in 1983, and were inaugurated by the visit of an Arsenal XI in front of 1200 spectators. A new grandstand eventually replaced the original wooden structure at

the beginning of the 1990’s, whilst various other developments have taken place in order to qualify the club to compete at step four in the non-league pyramid.

Soham enjoyed considerable success in the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup during the 1990’s, winning it on three separate occasions, including for the first time in their history in 1991 defeating March Town United, before repeating the feat again in 1998 and 1999 against Wisbech Town and Newmarket Town respectively. The Greens were also the first winners of the Millennium League Cup, when they defeated Diss Town on penalties in the final in 2001. The 2007-08 season was to be the clubs most successful season to date winning the Premier Division for the first time, beating nearest challengers Needham Market 4-0 on the final day of the season to clinch the title in front of 680 spectators at the Lane, and with it promotion to the Southern League for the first time in their history. In the first three seasons in the Southern League, Soham recorded finishes of 15th, 11th and 17th. At the end of the 2010-11 season, Ian Benjamin, who had been at the club for six seasons and was in charge of the 2008 title winning side, stepped down from his position as 1st Team Manager. Soham transferred to the Ryman League Division One North for the 2011/12 season with former striker Andrew Furnell returning to take over as Player/Manager. However with the Greens languishing near the foot

of the table, Furnell was replaced by former Histon Managers Steve Fallon and Ian Hart in March, with the club finishing the season fourth from bottom. It was a successful campaign for Soham’s other sides though, with the Reserves returning to the Kershaw Premier Division after finishing as runners-up in Senior A, whilst the Under 18s progressed to the 1st round of the FA Youth Cup, where they were beaten by Charlton Athletic in front of a crowd of over 500 people at the Lane. The 2012/13 season saw Soham record their highest ever League position, finishing seventh in the Ryman League North Division, five points outside the play-offs. Soham won the Cambs Invitation Cup for the fifth time in their history in 2014 beating CRC 6-1 at the Abbey Stadium, but were unable to retain the trophy last season, narrowly losing 2-1 to Cambridge City in the final. Soham did finish the season with an accolade though, winning the Ryman League Respect award for the second consecutive year having gone through the season having not collected any dissent points, which saw the club commended in the end of season FA Respect and Fair Play awards. Following a difficult start to the 2015/16 campaign, Steve Fallon stepped down as Manager at the start of October to be replaced by senior players Robbie Nightingale and David Theobald.

TRAVELLER’S TALES

TRAVELLER’S TALES

The travels of a Thamesmead Town away supporter... Leaving home at 8am on a cold winter’s Saturday morning can surely only mean one thing....... yes, today is the day for the season’s longest Ryman League trip. Those who believe that Non-League footie is all about playing the “team from round the corner”, surely didn’t factor in a 270 mile round trip to the Norfolk Broads to play “The Yachtsmen” from Wroxham FC. Arriving at Dartford FC to pick the Coach up at 9.45, we awaited the arrival of the men who would represent South London’s Green & White army on the pitch – although the Essex based brigade were to later join the coach at Thurrock FC. As the clock ticked slowly past midday, concern was raised among the Management team as we passed a sign advising us that we were fast approaching “Plumstead”, just beyond the next field, however we were assured by the driver that all was progressing well toward our destination and Sat Nav was functioning correctly. A relatively smooth journey saw us arrive in Norfolk shortly before 1pm, affording the players opportunity to chill and relax in the club house following the trip, before preparing to

pick up 3 crucial points. It soon became clear that the modern marvels of Wifi had yet to reach the coastal town as fruitless attempts were made by all to liaise with the outside world. Those of us who arrived to spectate were somewhat disturbed to discover the facilities offered by our hosts didn’t extend to draught beer..........so it was onto the bottled / canned variety as we eagerly awaited kick-off. Mention should however be made of the high quality cheeseburgers and hot dogs available, although the chips would surely not have met with our chairman’s approval. As a chill wind blew across Trafford Park during a disappointing first-half, thoughts started to turn to a half-time Bovril to warm the cockles. However, Aaarrrggghhh!!! As if not having

draught beer wasn’t enough, it was alarming to discover the total shock on the faces of the catering staff when I had the temerity to ask for Bovril!!! You’d have thought I’d asked for a free sample of one of Bernard Matthews finest, such was the shock at my request. And so a cup of coffee it was as we awaited the 2nd half. As a disappointing match came to an end, we awaited the return of the players from the dressing room before collectively refuelling in anticipation of a rather subdued journey back to London. However, a brief stop at the nearby petrol garage did help to lift spirits somewhat on the way home!! Oh well...............onto the next. Let’s at least hope that Great Wakering have some Bovril. POSSIBLE FIXTURE CHANGE

Monday’s scheduled Ryman League North home game against TILBURY by the time you read this weeks programme has been postponed. The game has been called off because the Dockers last night (Thursday) won their delayed Essex Senior Cup tie against Redbridge and now face the next round next Tuesday. This means that our game has been postponed and will now take place in a week’s time – MONDAY 14th MARCH – at the SCT with a 7:45pm kick-off.

TWO YOUNGSTERS DEBUT AT GREAT WAKERING In the Meads 3-2 win at Great Wakering last weekend, two youngsters – Kye Jude and Harry Price – made their first team debuts. A third – Sam Orisatoki – was an unused substitute. We’d like to congratulate all three and hope that they represent the Mead for some time to come in the future

FIFTH TIME LUCKY! You’ll have heard that our away game against HARINGEY BOROUGH was postponed this week for a fourth time due to the weather. Even moving the game to Tilbury’s Chadfield Stadium didn’t help on this occasion, with club secretary DAVE JOY left shaking his head. Dave admitted that he couldn’t ever remember having the same game called off four times – well fingers crossed for fifth time lucky!

2016/2017 SEASON TICKETS Work is continuing to finalise all renewals for our £30 Family Season Ticket Offer, and we hope to have renewal forms available for our home game on GOOD FRIDAY when we welcome BARKINGSIDE to the SCT. We’ll keep you posted over the new few weeks as we confirm more details.

TALKSPORT RADIO

Tony Incenzo of talkSPORT Radio tells us about his love for non-league football... I’ve been watching NonLeague football on a regular basis since I was 10 years old. What I like most is that the players, club officials and supporters are there for the love of the game. The true spirit of football exists at NonLeague level. I grew up in North-West London and I was taken by my family to see my local club QPR as a child in the 1970’s. I’ve always supported the R’s, but when they were playing away from home I started going to see my local Non-League clubs – Hendon primarily, but also Finchley, Barnet and Edgware Town. From there, I decided to visit every Non-League club in London as my groundhopping bug began. By the time I was 17, I had visited all 92 Football League grounds and I visited all the Scottish League grounds whilst still a teenager. Since then, I’ve continued travelling all around the country to visit Non-League clubs. Earlier

24

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

this season, I chalked up my 2,000th ground at FC United of Manchester. One of the best groundhops was being part of a world record in March 2004. I joined 250 other groundhoppers to watch five matches at five different football grounds in one day in the Central Midlands League. This is listed in the Guinness Book of Records and we received certificates confirming the world record at the end of the fifth game. In December 2011, I set about watching a match inside Feltham Prison in Middlesex. This featured a team called Phoenix FC, who had to play all their fixtures at home (for obvious reasons!) as inmates of the Young Offender Institution at Feltham. I received special permission by email to attend a fixture, but I was told not to bring a phone or a camera with me. I was instructed to arrive in the main car park along with the match referee and the visiting players from Hanworth

Villa Vets. We were met by members of the prison staff who escorted us all in together…via an airport-style metal detector, a body search, numerous locked gates and along a path to the changing rooms. This process took 45 minutes. After the players and ref got changed, we were then accompanied through more locked gates out to the playing area. A high mesh fence with barbed wire on top surrounded the football pitch. There were dug-outs along one touchline and I watched the match from there as the only spectator. By going to FC United, I recompleted visits to the top 16 divisions of English football down to Non-League step 4. Then at step 5 I need 26 grounds and another 76 at step 6. There are endless possibilities at step 7 and below. Also, I’ve been to 35 European countries plus the USA for football – so it would be nice to visit more countries.

GUEST BLOG

GUEST BLOG by Jess Beasley

Jess Beasley is a 21 year old English and Creative Writing Student from Nottingham. She follows Nottingham Forest home and away which is what she bases most of her blogs on. That was until the day she was brought to the SCT. We’re delighted that Jess has agreed for us to print her story of her visit just two weeks ago… “I write today having had my eyes opened wider to another side of football. Non-League! I’m not talking about the likes of Grimsby Town or Chester- more the teams whose players take on another part time job and can recall every name of the less than 100 fans that go and watch every week. I say opened wider, because having visited non-league football before, I do know what it’s all about. But, on Saturday I witnessed the same lower standard football, cold weather and small ground, yet left with both a bubble in my heart and a stab in the chest. “On Saturday, I attended Thamesmead Town vs Cheshunt, a Ryman League Division One North fixture. It was a cold, miserable day. I stood on a stand with a few seats and a bar. The ground was small yet modern in places. The wind was blowing a gale at times and the fine rain managed to hit us even from underneath the stand roof. There were approximately 90 people in attendance and a muddy cut up field of a pitch that held 22 young men playing their hearts out. The refereeing standard is apparently appalling whichever level you grace your presence at and I do admit that it is incredibly strange visiting a football ground with a glass cabinet for a club shop! Honestly? It was fantastic. The “people” 26

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

I attended with, Richard and Jamie Green, are regular attendees for Mead, and prior to the game were filling me in on how the club worked; the people that helped it run and why they enjoyed going so much. Within minutes of the game starting, I already understood exactly what they were trying to describe to me. The simplicity of everything involved with Mead, and other non-league clubs in general is incredible. Everyone knows everyone. Everyone talks and greets each other like old friends. The players are encouraged and everyone chips in to do their bit. There’s a real sense of community and family; a real network of friendships. I was asked after the game, “Do you see why we enjoy it?” The better question would be, how can anyone not enjoy it? The standard of football isn’t brilliant admittedly, but for the first time in as long as I can remember, I saw two full teams of football players, regardless of age, talent and standard, give everything they had. And when it was over they had drinks in the bar with the fans. Again, everyone knew everybody. It left a really good feeling inside; a “bubble” that said I really enjoyed the game and that I would definitely go again. But, then came the stab in the chest. I know what modern football entails, I know what it is and how it impacts

football fans, but seeing the simplicity of the non-league game left me feeling deflated about the football I go to watch. I love Forest and I love the sport. However, it’s no secret that every season that goes by, football is changing, and now at an even more alarming rate. Some of the changes are okay, don’t get me wrong, but the passion and love for the game is slowly disappearing. Football has no soul. Or very little! Visiting Thamesmead on Saturday really showed the flaws that are appearing in professional football. The standard may not be as good, but the feel good factor certainly is worth it. And the best bit? Each penny that gets spent is actually making a difference to the club and to the local community. Now that really is being a part of something, even if it is small! The club is lovely, the ground is brilliant for the level of football that they compete at and once again, each player gives everything they have. Unfortunately Thamesmead lost 2-1, but it was a fantastic day all the same. Everyone I met or was introduced to were extremely friendly and welcoming, the players were lovely and the day as a whole was thoroughly enjoyable. I wish Thamesmead all the best in future games and I do hope to return to watch them again when I can!

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD Once again, we’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Throughout the 2015/16 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. Again, we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter, Charlotte, for donating the prize to the club. This year, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. So hang around for a few minutes at the end of the game to see who is the recipient of the Cooper Man of the Match award. COMMERCIAL CORNER

COMMERCIAL NEWS

with Mike Green

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the SCT! We’re moving forward with the renewal of our £30.00 Family Season Ticket offer for next season and we hope that notices will be ready in time for our home game with Barkingside on Good Friday. I’d like to thank Ken Maslin, the headmaster of Bishop John Robinson Primary School here in Thamesmead, for his time this week - we had a very productive and successful meeting as we continue to reach out into local schools and form partnerships which hopefully will last a long time. If you’d like me to talk to your son/daughter/ grandson/granddaughter’s school, simply let me know... As you’ll read in Mead Matters, as we’re not at home on Sport Relief Weekend, we’re looking to hold our own “Sport Relief Mile”a week early - next Saturday (March 12th) prior to our home game with Waltham Abbey. If you’d like to join us on the walk - and trust me it will be a walk and not a run - see me as soon as

you can so that I can give you full details and more importantly a sponsorship form! Take care everyone - to our friends from Soham a safe return home, and to all Mead fans don’t forget we’re home again next Saturday when we host Waltham Abbey - after of course some of us have done our own Sport Relief mile.

If your company would like to sponsor a forthcoming home game, please see Greenie TODAY or contact him on commercialttfc@live.co.uk or alternatively 07845 751319

If you’d like to join the fundraising, please either see me today (or maybe Monday) or mail me at commercialttfc@live.co.uk Cheers Greenie THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Soham Town Rangers

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

10

CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34
