MANAGER’S COLUMN
STEVE
HOUSHAM
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Dover to our home this afternoon, and after an enjoyable game I hope everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Dover Athletic in the National League. The last game at home saw us come unstuck against Macclesfield Town for the third time this season. It was another day were it did not go right for us we had a bare bones squad and then an injury to Connor Oliver didn’t help and we had to play players out of position, but I could not fault their attitudes - they gave it there all, but no reward.
They have the leading scorer in the division in Ricky Miller in their ranks, so we need to be on our guard all game – it will be a good test for our young lads. Injuries are still in the squad, but some are nearly there. Simon Russell has stepped up in his
Like I have told the players, you should all be proud of this club, who would of thought we would still be in with a fighting chance of staying up? It’s still a tough challenge, but one we will not give up on keep on! Keep up your great support, be
We then travelled to Braintree and in a massive game we did everything, but score yet again. For the first time I and the players had come off knowing the better team had lost, it was a game which saw new signings Robbie Tinkler and Matty Dixon made their debuts and they did well. They will bolster the squad for the run in. Today we take on Dover who occupy a play-off place, it will be a very tough game, but one we yet again will be doing everything we can to get a positive result from.
recovery and he is showing signs of doing very well.
proud and embrace the last few months.
We have 14 games left of this historic season and there all very big games. I want you, the fans, to enjoy every one.

THE VISITORS...
DOVER ATHLETIC
North Ferriby United host high-flying Dover Athletic hoping to dent their play-off charge, while aiding their fight for survival... Dover make the nine hour round trip to the Eon Visual Stadium hoping it is not in vein, but their arduous journey may only serve to benefit the Villagers. Ferriby have lost their past three home games, but the form of Dover has slipped of late with their only victory in their past five matches a 3-1 win over Chester. Their 1-1 draw with Wrexham last weekend was a performance which showed glimpses of their potential, but Ferriby must be on their 4

guard today, with Dover possessing the league’s most potent forwards – Ricky Miller. The marksman has struck 27 times this campaign, which is in fact nine more than the combined Ferriby side, but aside from Miller, Dover have threats elsewhere with Joe Healy striking in back-to-back matches. Steve Housham knows his side need to start picking up victories sooner rather than later or face becoming further entrenched in the battle for survival.

RICHARD ORLU
Sam Magri is a right-back who has experience in the youth sections of Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Portsmouth – where he earned a trial at Liverpool. Has represented the England youth squad from Under 16 through to Under 19 levels. Has developed into a key player in the defence of Dover and has notched up 29 appearances already this season, with one goal to his name.
A tall central defender, Richard is powerful in the air and became a fans favourite during the club’s promotion to the Conference Premier in 2014. Richard signed a new deal at Crabble for the 2014/15 season and continued to improve his game at this level, remaining a permanent fixture in the Dover defence. In January 2015 he extended his existing contract until May 2016.
THE OPPOSITION
THE DANGERMAN
RICKY MILLER RICKY MODESTE
ASWAD THOMAS
A skilful and pacey winger who was chosen to appear in Sky One’s reality TV show ‘Football Icon’, making the final six contestants. He scored twice in the 2013/14 play-off semi-final, and set up the winner in the final. A fans favourite who has found his best form under Chris Kinnear.
Aswad Thomas signed for Dover Athletic in August 2015. Having started his career with Charlton Athletic, he spent time on loan with Accrington, Barnet and Lewes, before signing for Woking in 2009, and Braintree Town in 2011. Thomas then went on to play for Grimsby for 2-and-a-half years before returning to Woking during the transfer window of the 2014–15 season.
JACK PARKINSON A tough-tackler who can play comfortably at either centre-half or centre midfield, previously of Maidstone United, Welling United and Woking. Was offered a deal by League Two side Leyton Orient, but decided on a oneyear contract with Chris Kinnear’s Whites and has been a consistent performer this campaign.
ROSS LAFAYETTE Following his departure from Eastleigh, Ross Lafayette joined Dover and has chipped in with his fair share of goals bagging 10 times for the club. Had previous spells with Welling, Woking and Luton Town. The 30-year-old scored four goals in 22 appearances for the Spitfires last season.
Dangerous striker Miller was signed on a two-year deal, following a successful loan period with the club where he scored five goals in ten appearances. Scored 28 goals for Boston United before being snapped up by Luton Town, and is a constant threat in front of goal. Is currently the top scorer in the division with 27 goals to his name.
THE GAFFER
CHRIS KINNEAR The most successful manager in Dover Athletic’s history came to Crabble as a player in 1985, however it was to be on the touchline where he would make his name. After a ten year spell with the club he left to join Margate before Wolves as a scout. He returned to Dover in 2013 and led the side to the National League with victory over Ebbsfleet in the play-off final.

CLUB HISTORY
CLUB HISTORY
DOVER ATHLETIC Dover Athletic F.C. was formed in 1983 after the town’s previous club, Dover FC, folded due to its debts. The new club took Dover’s place in the Southern League Southern Division, with former Dover player Alan Jones as manager. Initially Athletic struggled, finishing second from bottom of the table in the 1984–85 season. In November 1985 Steve McRae, who had succeeded Jones a year earlier, was sacked and replaced by Chris Kinnear. Under Kinnear the club’s fortunes turned round, with two top-five finishes followed by the Southern Division championship, and with it promotion, in the 1987–88 season. The team started strongly in the Premier Division, finishing in sixth place at the first attempt, and then winning the championship in the 1989–90 season. The club was denied promotion to the Football Conference, however, as the Crabble Athletic Ground did not meet the standard required for that league. After finishing fourth and second in the subsequent two seasons, Dover won the title again in the 1992–93 season and this time were admitted to the Conference. Although Dover finished in eighth place in their first season in the Conference, the following season saw the club struggling against relegation, and Kinnear was replaced at the helm by John Ryan – but his reign was a short one. The club then appointed former England international Peter Taylor as manager, but he was unable to steer the team away from the foot of the table, and Dover held onto their place in the Conference only because
Northern Premier League runners-up Boston United failed to submit their application for promotion before the required deadline. Bill Williams took over as manager in 1997 led the club to the FA Trophy semi-finals in the 1997–98 season and a best ever league finish of sixth place in the 1999–2000 season. Amid financial crisis the entire board of directors resigned, forcing the club’s Supporters’Trust to take over the running of the club, and manager Gary Bellamy was sacked after just six months in the job. Former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall took over but was dismissed just three months later, with Clive Walker taking over in March 2002 with the club rooted to the foot of the table. The club finished the season bottom of the Conference and was relegated back to the Southern League Premier. In Dover’s first season back in the Southern League Premier Division the Whites finished in third place. A poor start to the following season saw Walker replaced by Richard Langley. Dover finished the season in 19th place, before being switched to the Isthmian League Premier Division in the summer of 2004 following a re-organisation of the English football league system. The new season started with six successive defeats, which saw Langley sacked, and the financial problems continued. Dover were relegated to the Isthmian League Division One at the end of the season. Dover Athletic narrowly missed out on an
immediate return to the Premier Division in the 2005–06 season, reaching the play-offs for promotion but losing out to Tonbridge Angels. The following season Dover again reached the play-offs but lost in the semi-final to Hastings United, after which Walker did not have his contract renewed and was replaced by former Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler. In his first season in charge he led the club to the Division One South championship and promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division. The following season Dover won a second consecutive championship and thus gained promotion to Conference South. In the 2009–10 season, Dover reached the play-offs for promotion to the Conference National, but lost at the semi-final stage to Woking. In the 2012–13 season the club again reached the play-offs, but this time lost in the final to Salisbury City. On 10 May 2014, Dover beat Ebbsfleet 1–0 at Stonebridge Road with a goal from Nathan Elder enough to seal the club’s return to the top flight of non-league football for the first time since 2002. The following season, Kinnear built on the good work done previously and guided the side to a 5th place finish in the Vanarama National League. The side faced Forest Green Rovers in the play-offs, losing 1-0 at home in the first leg before drawing 1-1 in Gloucestershire to suffer an undeserved exit from the play-offs. Brian Barwick, Chairman of The National League said: “This is an innovative approach and we are pleased that with the cooperation of our member clubs we will be able to consolidate the relationships we have collectively and individually with the Army. STANDS With games running out in the battle for survival, Sam Shepherd discusses today’s crucial game... Today we face Dover Athletic in what looks like a game we need to get some points from. Last week Ferriby played very well at Braintree, but missed plenty of chances and ended up losing 1-0. This is typical of Ferriby’s season, but their position is becoming more and more worrying. Ferriby are now bottom of the league and midweek results didn’t go their way with Woking, Braintree and Guiseley all winning.
disappointing because Ferriby dominated the match for long periods and created more chances than their hosts, but they failed to convert any of them. Sam Topliss missed two great chances and the Braintree goalkeeper had an excellent game to deny Curtis Bateson, Danny Emerton and Reece Thompson, who all had shots on target saved. Braintree found the winning goal
reverse fixture with Dover early on in the season, but Dover have been on a less than impressive run of form lately and Steve Housham’s side will be hoping to exploit that. Our home form has been shaky recently so a win today would be the perfect result all round. It would close the gap on the teams around us and instil some confidence going into Tuesday’s difficult looking game at home to high-flying Lincoln City. Robbie Tinkler made his debut last week and put in a man-of-thematch performance, which will have pleased him and Housham. Tinkler and his fellow teammates will all need to be on their game today to get what would be a vital three points. Another defeat could leave Ferriby cut a drift at the bottom with games running out.
Dover occupy the final play-off position at the moment so this looks like a difficult game, but Steve Housham needs to find a way to motivate his side enough to get something from the game.
when Ferriby failed to defend a cross properly. They held on to win and, whilst it was not the result Ferriby deserved, it again illustrated the point that you have to take your chances at this level or you will be punished.

If Ferriby survive from here it will certainly be a “Great Escape”, but we all know it’s been done before and hopefully Ferriby can be the latest team to pull of the feat. Enjoy the game! Sam
