THE MANAGER
THE MANAGER
CHRIS BOLDER
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of York City to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon. Firstly from behalf of all the players and staff we would like to wish all the fans a Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year. Due to printer deadlines I’ve had to write these in advance, so we would have hopefully played the Curzon Ashton game (Tuesday 19th December) and played Harrogate Town away on Saturday. It was very disappointing to have the Curzon game cancelled two Saturdays in a row, but it was the correct decision on both occasions as the pitch was unsafe. We were fully prepared for both occasions, but the extra time has been very beneficial both from a training point of view and the opportunity to allow a couple of the players to recover from injury and illness respectively. We have been working hard in training to ensure that the required levels are reached in every session undertaken which will then help with the transition in to matchdays. We have had a good number of training sessions now for certain elements to be instilled in all the players, but we are aware that it will take time for a complete change in philosophies. The festive period has always been synonymous with football and the games come thick and fast, but the majority of these players
have experienced this stage of the season many times before. It’s important that they spend time with their families and friends over this period, but at the same time, they must be disciplined and conduct themselves with professionalism. This year it has fallen in a fairly standard way with us playing on the Saturday, Tuesday and then the Monday, so we will squeeze another training session in between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day just to ensure we keep ticking over. Back to today’s game, York City are a big club and have some very good players with a relatively new manager who will have been working hard to get them playing the way he likes. They have shown that they are an attacking threat having scored goals in every game under Martin Gray and their defeats have only been by the single goal. Therefore we will show them the respect they deserve, but we must try and impose ourselves on the opposition and work towards turning our results around. THE CAPTAIN
JACK WALTERS Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on York City n in the National League North. Although I have been really enjoying my football at Bridlington Town, the opportunity to play at North Ferriby United was too good for me to say no. I had a chat with the manager Chris Bolder, before the game against Nuneaton Town and he gave me nothing but confidence, which is incredibly important for me making the step up to this level of football. There were lots of positives to take from the Nuneaton Town game, despite the 2-0 defeat. I was gutted that we couldn’t build on a decent first-half performance and get a result. I really enjoyed the challenge and look forward to the new era at North Ferriby United. Jack Walters Defender

York City head to the Eon Visual Media Stadium ahead of a crunch festive double-header which sees the Villagers make the return fixture on New Year’s Day. Ferriby have seen their fixture with Curzon Ashton fall foul of the weather on two occasions, so this will be the first time they take to the field since the 2-0 defeat to Nuneaton Town. York, however, were in action on Saturday 16th when they bowed out of the FA Trophy in a 2-1 defeat to Kidderminster Harriers. That said, York manager Martin Gray felt his side produced the best 45 minutes of
football since his appointment. The Minstermen’s defence of the trophy ended at the first-round stage after substitute Amari Morgan-Smith’s secondhalf reply could not turn the tables following two home goals in as many minutes from James Pearson and Emmanuel Sonupe. In the league, York sit comfortably in midtable in 11th with 29 points from their 20 matches. The club have won eight, drawn five and lost seven matches, scoring 34 goals in the process and conceding 29. Jon Parkin will be the one to watch and is the side’s top scorer with 11 to his name. YORK CITY
RECENT HISTORY The present club was formed in 1922 and prior to their election to Division Three North of the Football League in 1929 played in the Midland League. They remained in the Northern Section until 1958 when they became one of the original members of the Fourth Division. During the Second World War when the League was suspended from 1939 until 1946 the club operated in the various wartime competitions. Over the next 45 seasons (1958-2004) the club won promotion six times. In 1958/59 and 1964/65 they moved up to the third tier only to suffer immediate relegation. City again gained promotion in 1970/71 and in 1974 reached the Second Division (Championship) for the first and to date only time in their 95 year old history. In two seasons in the second tier of English football the club competed with Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest amongst others and in 1974/75 achieved their highest ever League placing when they finished 15th. The following campaign, however, they were relegated and by 1977 were back in the Fourth. In 1983/84 they won their first major honour when they finished runaway Fourth Division champions with 101 points becoming the first club in Football League history to reach three figures. City’s last promotion success in the League was via the playoffs in 1992/93
when on the club’s first ever visit to Wembley Stadium they beat Crewe Alexandra in a penalty shootout. On the other side of the coin City suffered relegation six times and over the years had to make seven applications for re-election back to the League. In 2004 the club finished bottom of Division Three (League Two) and dropped down to the Conference bringing to an end 75 years membership of the Football League. During that time they had spent two seasons in the second tier and 16 in the third tier. In eight years in the Conference City reached the promotion play offs three times. In 2006/07 they lost at the semifinal stage and in 2009/10 went down to Oxford United in the final and then, on May 20th 2012, promotion back to the Football League was achieved when Luton Town were beaten 2-1 at Wembley. This latter game marked the club’s 4th appearance at the national stadium in four years and completed a league and cup double that season. After four years back in the Football League, York dropped back into the Conference finishing in 24th place in League 2 in 2015/16. The following season City suffered a second successive relegation, after finishing in the final relegation place in the National League and will compete in regional nonleague football in 2017/18 for the first time since 1929. JONATHAN BURN Jonathan joined York on loan from Bristol Rovers in November 2017. Born in Darlington, he began his career at Sunderland academy before joining Middlesbrough in March. He joined Oldham on loan in August 2015 and made his professional debut on 9th August 2015.
THE OPPOSITION
DAVID FERGUSON David joined York in October 2017, becoming manager Martin Gray’s first signing after taking the helm. Born in Sunderland, David began his career progressing through Darlington’s youth, breaking into the Quakers’ first team in 2012. David was capped by England ‘C’ in May 2017.
ADRIANO MOKE

Highly-regarded young midfielder Connor Smith joined York City on a one-year deal from Hartlepool United in June 2017, becoming another useful addition to Gary Mills’ squad. Connor, aged just 20, is a graduate of the Pools’ Academy system, which he joined at the age of 16.
THEO WHARTON
JON PARKIN
MICHAEL RANKINE
Young midfielder Theo Wharton signed for York City in June 2017 on a one-year deal. The box-to-box midfielder has also been capped at international level by Saint Kitts and Nevis, making three appearances so far. Theo is the godson of former Welsh international Nathan Blake.
A huge favourite everywhere he goes, big Jon Parkin re-joined York City for his second spell in November 2016. Last season, Jon went on to score 16 goals for the Minstermen and led the line well. The crowning glory was a goal at Wembley in the FA Trophy Final win over one of his former clubs Macclesfield Town.
Another popular player with the York fans, striker Rankine returned this summer for his third spell at Bootham Crescent and Michael will be hoping to build on his total of 111 appearances and 24 goals. Michael is another player keen to get back into full-time football where he belongs. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

NLP COLUMN
Try comparing the full-back position to an ingredient used in a Sunday roast dinner and you may agree with my view that it would be the carrot. Carrots are more significant than the peas, but not the Yorkshire puddings, nor the stuffing or roast chicken. I myself play as a left-back and I know how undervalued the position is from my shaded pedestal placed far, far away from the table where our strikers and central midfielders drink in our clubhouse after a game. They may provide the goals and power the team’s engine room, but full-backs; we provide the cloak of invisibility for opposition wingers to turn into a nonevent. We are the garbage disposal men of the team. Full-backs could also wear hi-visibility jackets and we would still go unnoticed. Think back to the likes of Dennis Irwin and Kenny Samson and they are an example of consistency for the position. But nobody speaks of them in the same tone as when they reminisce about the days of Cantona or Wright, as if they were speaking about an old girlfriend from their teens. Remember during the 2000s when there was a faint hum over players like Ashley Cole and Marcelo pioneering a new role for full-backs? It was a notion that didn’t survive long because full-backs have long been a source of creativity and endeavour 12
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme
of support for wingers. Although I was born long after his playing days, Dennis Rofe was a source of inspiration for me growing up with his accurate crossing and troublesome dribbling ability. The only thing worse for a full-back than facing a tricky winger is their overlapping accomplice, ready to pull your shorts down and make you look like the village idiot. What I am getting excited about now is the growing endorsement of the 5-3-2 formation by managers across the country over the past 18 months. A system centred around the wing-back bearing the brunt of the attacking play out wide. With this new move towards a formation that strengthens defensive tactics in the middle of the park, a clash with teams sticking with the traditional 4-4-2 – a system ideal at exploiting the flanks – will give neutrals and fans alike plenty to enjoy. You may remember Jamie Carragher saying on Sky Sports a few years ago: “There’s only two things for a full-back. You’re either a failed winger or a failed centre-back. No-one wants to grow up and be a Gary Neville.” Say what you like, but I definitely wanted to play like Dennis Rofe when I was growing up. Adam Ellis Non League Paper Writer
