THE MANAGER

TERRY

SPILLANE

Can I start by welcoming the Harringey manager Tom Loizou, his players, team officials and especially the supporters who have made the trip to the SCT this afternoon – and may you all have a safe trip home. In the opposing dug out today is man who is very experienced. Tom knows the Ryman League well so I expect them to at least stay up and quite possibly be a surprise package this season.

We are also aware that they have some very good experienced players with the likes of ex-pro Leroy Griifiths no less. We have

done our homework and we will have had them watched in midweek (when they beaten 0-1 at Cheshunt) so hopefully that pays dividends and we continue the excellent start we have had.

ideal start to the season. Away at Swifts I felt we looked a little cagey in possession of the ball but on a blistering hot day their fitness levels shone through and we got the win we fully deserved.

We are absolutely delighted with our 2 wins although I don’t think we have played particularly well. That said 2 wins and 6 points is an

On Monday against many people’s favourites for promotion this season (Thurrock FC) the lads once again showed courage and commitment against a very physical team. Our defence were simply fantastic and it was no surprise to me when 1 of them (Tom) got the evenings M.O.M award. Having Tony Faulkner back alongside me on the bench on Monday after his holiday was obviously a massive boost to both myself and the players. Tony’s calmness in situations is invaluable and this was evident during Monday night’s game

as he showed all of his experience in organising the team when we unfortunately were reduced to 10 men. On the player front, we have signed Marc Gorbell from Harlow. Marc is what I’d call a “proper centre half” but he can also play when necessary. Welcome to the club Marc leaving however is George Benner who felt he needed a regular spot in the team and unfortunately I cannot guarantee ANY player that! We now face a 4 game run of away games which will be tough. The squad will be fully utilised of that I have no doubt and I’m quietly confident we have the right

characters that will see us through possibly the toughest start to a season I’ve had to endure. Finally I’d just like to thank all the Mead supporters – new and old – for making Monday night’s game a fantastic experience for us!! It was great to see so many of you wearing the club colours. The players and staff really appreciate your support and it definitely gives the lads a lift knowing you’re behind them cheering them on! Onwards and upwards - come on the Mead! THE BOARDROOM

PAUL

BOWDENBROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Haringey Borough FC to our home at SCT on this Saturday afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game they have a safe journey home. Well here we are, our third game of this season and to date we are unbeaten I am advised it’s the best start that we as a club have had for a number of seasons, long may it continue.

Since Terry has taken on the role as first-team manager at the later part of last season there has been an air of comradeship within the club. Terry and his management team enjoy their responsibilities and are very professional in everything they are involved with, and this sense exudes to each and every one of the players new and old - resulting in a very tight unit working for each other on and off the field. This camaraderie extends not just with the boys that are playing in the first team at this time it radiates through ought the squad. Although Terry is a large built gentlemen in stature very much just like myself he is a very genuine person with a kind heart and always, whatever the situation, has the players best interest at heart at all time, another way to describe this air of being in charge would be honest.

06

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Many of you will have read about the serious public disorder by two rival groups of mindless individuals at our game 2 weeks ago, I now think enough has been said about the incident within the local media but I will clarify the facts as I see them. This was a mindless act thought to be pre medicated by a minority who wanted to cause havoc at a friendly game of football at a family oriented club. I on behalf of the Club deeply regret these events, but these mindless acts will not distract me from what I am trying to achieve here at Thamesmead Town FC since

becoming Chairman and that is to play entertaining football in front of a growing crowd drawn from Thamesmead’s diverse and resilient local community. To everyone that was effected by these mindless actions both the volunteers of this fine old club, some who were put in personal danger, as well as both sets of supporters and

players I personally unreservedly apologise for putting them in danger. Had I been made aware of any impending trouble like others

as it now transpires during the investigations but for whatever reason they decided not to involve the chairman and owner of the football club of this possible trouble maybe because they would have known that the game would never had taken place a decision I would have made without hesitation. This season we as a club are offering many initiatives within the community the first of many was the offer of a £30 Season Ticket for a family of 4, yes £30 I think it works out at just over 30p per game per head for a family of 4. The only conditions that we ask is that all applicants are residents within of the local community and when they come to a match they buy a £2 Match Day programme. At the count last Tuesday we had sold 17 so let’s get firstly to the magic number of 100 and then the next.

Another initiative was to change our mid-week night for our home matches to a Monday, it would seem to have worked if we take the numbers through the gate on Tuesday, but we must keep ensuring that we make everyone visiting our games welcome at all times I want everyone to feel at ease so that families can visit us and then bring their friends. You will see within the Mead Bar our club shop with all of our merchandise for sale, this is another new initiative and this also looks to be a success if you take the number of orders and the scarves that I see wrapped around adults and children’s necks. Now let’s enjoy an afternoon of football together. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman & Managing Director

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

HARINGEY BOROUGH

You don’t get promoted with a points total of 103 by chance. Add into the mix a side that had won 34 of their 38 league games and Haringey Borough mustn’t be taken lightly. The Borough won promotion deservedly in top spot in the Essex Senior football league. Having only lost three times all season the club finished eleven points clear of Bowers & Pitsea in second-place. After the opening two games of the season the club have picked up just the one point on the opening day drawing 0-0 with Dereham Town. They faced an away trip against Cheshunt but were narrowly beaten 1-0 in a tense encounter at the Cheshunt Stadium. Somewhat of an unknown quantity the club will be looking for their first win of the season when they take on the Mead.

CLUB INFO Nickname: The Borough Founded: 1973 Ground: Coles Park Chairman: Aky Achillea Last Season: 1st (Promoted)

TODAY’S OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY It was not until 1970 that a team played under the name of Haringey Borough when Wood Green Town, who had played at Coles Park since 1930 , changed their name to Haringey Borough whilst playing in intermediate football. But the roots of the Club go back to 1907 when Tufnell Park FC was formed and joined the London League in which it played until 1914 and from 1912 to 1914 a team was also entered into the Athenian League. Wood Green Town was itself a breakaway off-shoot of Tufnell Park in 1911, playing under the name of Tufnell Spartans until 1920. The two Clubs merged in 1973 and played at Coles Park, briefly under the name of Edmonton & Haringey FC until 1976 when the present name was adopted. The Club played in the Athenian League until that Competition closed and they were admitted into the Isthmian League Division 2 North in 1984, remaining in membership for four years but being unable to fulfil their fixtures in 1988/89 due to a mass exodus of management and players just a few weeks before the start of that season. After a year in the wilderness they were admitted to the Spartan League in 1989 retaining Premier Division membership throughout until the South Midlands League merger in season 1997/98 when they finished 7th. In the Premier Division South to secure membership of the new “combined” Premier Division in 1998/99. Premier Division status was retained until the end of season 2006/07 when the Club’s regular flirting with danger

finally failed to provide the customary last gasp escape and relegation to Division One ensued. The team bounced back with promotion at the very first attempt and a fine season ended with promotion and winning the Division One Cup. Back in the Premier Division for the season 2008/09 the Club again quickly found itself among the relegation strugglers leading to the appointment of the current Manager – the vastly experienced Tom Loizou. The bottom places were again just avoided but 2009/10 produced a better showing and after a poor start the efforts of the team produced a marked improvement after the enforced winter break owing to the inclement weather. A good run of results led to the club finishing 15th in the Division. Better was to follow in 2010/11 when 8th place was achieved and the Club entered 2011/12 with Tom Loizou at the helm for the 4th season and with realistic hopes of making a challenge for the sole promotion spot which until home defeats around Christmas by the 2 front runners looked to be a serious

possibility. Once it became clear that it was not on the opportunity was taken to field teams with the following season in mind and several defeats inevitably followed although the final placing of 5th represented their best ever performance and the winning of the League Challenge Trophy was an exciting end of season bonus. 2012/13 was the last season in the Spartan South Midlands League as the FA moved the Club sideways into the Essex Senior League in the following close season and runners-up spot was achieved at the first attempt in 2013/14 along with being the runners-up in the League’s Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy. The calendar year 2014/15 saw Borough win more League games (38 out of 41 and 1 drawn) to give them the best record of any Senior Club in the Country. The Championship of the Essex Senior League was won in 2014/15 resulting in promotion to level 4 of the National Game Pyramid and entry to the Ryman League Division One North in 2015/16.

HEYBRIDGE SWIFTS Davidson (61)

THAMESMEAD Gordon-Young (71) Butler (84)

Saturday 8th August 2015 | Ryman League Division One North | Scraley Road | Att: 160

In steamy conditions, the Mead came from a goal down to clinch an opening day win in some style against the ten Swifts from Heybridge. With the home side ahead through a stunning free kick from Correy Davidson, the Mead levelled through some part of Tyrus Gordon-Young’s anatomy as the home keeper missed a Tommy Spillane free-kick. Before stand-in-skipper Richard Butler slid in to win the game for the visitors, as the woodwork denied Gordon-Young a second four minutes from time to seal what for long periods in the firsthalf looked unlikely as the heat

initially looked like being the only winner. Indeed in glorious sunshine, thoughts at kick-off were more akin to the summer game than our winter sport and for periods it showed with neither side creating more than half chances. Butler shot straight at the keeper early on before Gordon-Young tested home keeper Sam Cowler from distance. At the other end Shamido Pedulu could possibly have played in Davidson rather than shooting wide, before Pedulu received a yellow card for a horribly late lunge on Mead keeper Andy Walker.

The second-half was so much better and began with both keepers excelling – Cowler to deny Theo Fairweather-Johnson before Walker made a stunning full length save to deny Pedulu. The home side did take the lead just past the hour when Davidson gloriously curled home a free-kick from the edge of the box giving Walker no chance. The Mead were level though shortly afterwards and it’s a goal that Cowler will not what to see again! Spillane launched a freekick into the box and as the keeper was challenged by Gordon-Young, the ball bounced off some part of the strikers back and almost apologetically rolled into the net. The game then significantly turned the Mead’s way as Josh Fagbohun was sent off for a horribly late lunge on the magnificent Jack Barry (indeed his partnership with Farai Hallam was the undoubted highlight for the Mead) as the visitors took control. The visitor’s supremacy was then rewarded with what proved to be the winner six minutes from time

when Gordon-Young powered a header against Heybridge’s right post and as the ball rolled agonisingly along the goal line, stand in skipper Butler was on hand to win the game for the Mead. And in truth there could have been more as twice substitute Ainsley Everitt went close. The young winger did put the ball in the net with a 25 drive which was disallowed for “offside”, before forcing Cowler into the save of the game in stoppage time. First-team coach Darran George spoke after the game, and was naturally delighted with the result. “Heybridge is always a hard place to go and get a result for us so yes it’s a brilliant start for us. We showed great character and determination to grind out a result which I’ve no doubt we will have to do again throughout the season.”

“Credit where credit is due though,” Darran continued, “even after going behind to a very well taken free-kick, the lads kept going and got their rewards with two goals in the 20 minutes the winner coming in the 83rd minute which is pleasing as our fitness levels on a very warm afternoon looked good.” The best possible start then for the Mead before the derby with Thurrock as Monday Night Football comes to the SCT. The Mead - Walker - Aziaya (Evertitt), Spillane, FairweatherJohnson (Addae), Barry, Hallam, Butler, Dark, Gordon-Young, Uwezu, Koranteng (Porter)

Monday 10th August 2015 | Ryman League Division One North | Sporting Club Thamesmead | Att: 160

A goal ten minutes after half-time from stand in skipper Richard Butler gave the Mead the three points against a Thurrock side who demonstrated why they went so close last season in the Play Offs. The game was effectively decided in a three minute spell early in the Second Half. At one end, Mead keeper Andy Walker made a magnificent save to deny Ross Hall’s 25 yard pile driver whilst almost immediately Richard Butler’s angled shot crept in at Rhys Madden’s near post. Not even the late sending off of sub Bode Anidugbe could detract from another well earned three

Our defence were simply fantastic and it was no surprise to me when one of them (Tommy Spillane) got the evenings M.O.M award.” Indeed for long periods, it was back to the walls for the Mead as Thurrock probed and created the better chances. Daniel Francis shot over from a corner; Wall sent a free header from a corner wide before Joe Christou was unlucky to see a free

kick come back off the underside of the bar and rebound off of a prone Walker and away to safety. The home side didn’t create much in the opening half – Tyrus shot into the side netting and Spillane’s free kick was allowed to bounce through the box and flew just wide! After the break came Walker’s incredible save before stand in Captain Marvel Butler cut inside to score what proved to be the winner as try as they might, Thurrock just couldn’t find a way through the

On a balmy South East London afternoon, Jersey started brightly and Calvin Weir should one better than heading an early free kick wide. The home side then went close twice from Derek Duncan free kicks – both of which were headed wide by Jack Barry – before they went ahead on 18 minutes when Tyrus Gordon Young raced clear.

Theo Fairweather Johnson couldn’t get on the end of Michael Uwezo’s knock down, whilst Rupert Murray shot over at the

DOCKER

Today sees us begin out third Ryman League match of the season up to now we have made a solid start picking up 2 wins from our opening two matches. What a great day last Sat was as the first team beat Jersey and I was introduced to Stephen Howlett of Peabody and Mick Hayes from the Thamesmead Trust.

After chatting to them it was very encouraging to hear how excited they were in setting up a meeting to discuss ways of progressing the Academy and I will keep you posted on future developments!

The players have been responding well to training and they are now starting to realise just what is needed for them to make it at Ryman level especially after watching the firstteam play. I was delighted when Gary (our u21 manager) took three of our players under his wing and involved them in a friendly. Kehinde Aliu, George Jeffrey and Habeeb Ajane all did ok and are currently training with the u21s. Well done lads!

Our recruitment is still ongoing and we are still waiting on lads to return from holiday before we can step our sessions up but in general I am pleased with what I’m seeing. Finally good luck to Terry and the lads today.

Today sees us begin out third Ryman League match of the season up to now we have made a solid start picking up 2 wins from our opening two matches. Last Saturday’s venture into Essex to play Heybridge Swifts showed that sometimes the performance is not the most important thing, picking up 3 important away points on the opening day was a nice bonus.

Monday saw us entertain a very strong Thurrock side, under the guidance of the experienced Mark Simpson, are always well organised, strong and this proved to be the

case then, but a good solid all round performance saw us again take all the points winning a very tight contest 1-0. The home attendance of 160 for the Thurrock match was pleasing, hopefully our adventure into Monday night home games will reap us benefits. Our opponents today Haringey

Borough are newly promoted to the Ryman league this season and we welcome them to STC for today’s encounter, hopefully Terry and the boys can continue with their run of victories and collect another 3 points. Hope you all enjoy today’s match. Dave Joy Club Secretary

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD

COOPER’S MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD Once again, we’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year. This season, we’ll be awarding a Mead Player of the Match game award, and once again we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte for donating the prize to the club. This year for the first time though, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. So to see who wins the season’s first prize, why not hang on just a couple of minutes at the end of the game to see who’s first to receive the “Cooper’s Man of the Match!” STOP PRESS – we’re in negotiations to hold a “Player of the Month” award this year for the first time. We are at an advanced stage of agreeing terms with a sponsor over the prize and hope to agree things in the coming days...

COMMERCIAL CORNER

COMMERCIAL

NEWS So that was MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL at the SCT? What a great night it was... The gate of over 150 was our biggest league gate here at the SCT for more than 18 months and we hope an early indication that maybe, just maybe our plans to involve our neighbours and attract more of them through the gates maybe beginning to pay off. Two lots of big news to bring you today from the commercial world and the first is that its with huge thanks to the CANARY WHARF GROUP PLC who have agreed to sponsor “The Mead Match-day programme” for the duration of season 2015/2016. A massive thank you to Howard Dawber and everyone at Canary Wharf for their support - just another sign we hope, of the growing support the club is receiving. A thank you too to ABBEY WOOD MINICABS who have joined the Mead as a Community Business partner and have ordered a new advertising banner for here at the SCT which will be in place for our next home game - scheduled at the moment for Bank Holiday Monday. Another big thanks to Nim and his team and we look forward to a prolonged and successful partnership!

A second ongoing target of course had been to attract more advertisers and sponsors. That’s exactly what our new friends at Abbey Wood Cars have done and we’re at an advanced stage of finalising our arrangement with Nim and the team so keep your eyes around the ground over the coming weeks... Alternatively, just give me a call or come and see me on a match day to find the ideal sponsorship package for you!

at the SCT reception during normal centre opening hours...

Next up another unashamed plug for the offer of the year and our absolutely ridiculously priced season ticket offer for our friends and neighbours in the local community that you’d be made not to take up! Family of four - one season ticket - JUST £30.00! Application forms are all around the SCT on Match Days and completed forms (together with your remittance) should be handed into the board room on Match Days. You can also leave your completed forms

Cheers, Greenie

Final word on how great it was to see so many people enjoying “The Mead Bar” and wearing club colours - to get yours today, please see the club shop cabinet in the bar, and we’ll be happy to serve you. Just a quick note that all polo shirts that have thus far been ordered will be ready for collection at our next home game...

AWAY DAYS

DAYS

The Mead’s second away fixture will be against AFC Hornchurch on Saturday August 22, 3:00pm kick-off.

GETTING THERE AFC HORNCHURCH Saturday 22nd August Kick-Off: 3.00pm Postcode for Sat Nav: RM14 2LX Estimated journey time: 35 minutes Round trip mileage: 35 miles AFC Hornchuch is the second venue The Mead will visit after travelling to take on Heybridge Swifts on the opening day. The Urchins suffered relegation from the Isthmaian League Premier Division finishing second bottom 12 points from safety in a disappointing campaign all round. Having picked up 40 point from their 46 games the club ultimately fell to relagation winning a mere ten games. A large reason for their downfall was their inability to find the back of the net scoring a league’s third worst 46. Despite losing a few players the club signed Dave Knight from Wingate & Finchley, Danny Woodards from Tranmere, Jed Chouman from SC Bafa and Abs Thompson from Thurrock. However the best news the club received was that Sam Mott and last season’s top goalscorer George Purcell put pen to paper on new deals. The game will be a good test for Terry and his troops but one which we will relish and travel in numbers to support the boys.
