CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Cheshunt FC on this Saturday afternoon of a brand new year. After some warm hospitality and maybe a small little medicinal drink, if you are not driving, whilst watching an enjoyable game I hope you have a safe return journey home. Before writing my notes may I wish everyone associated with this fine old club a Happy New Year, whether they be a fellow director, manager, coach, players, sponsor, all of our volunteers our Landlords, our league opponents and, of course our own fine supporters. May I also, once again, personally take this opportunity to welcome all those local resident’s that have decided to join us as new supporters through our £30 season ticket for a family of four initiative that has been running for the last two seasons. I have been informed on numerous occasions by members of these families that by joining the family season ticket initiative they are able to bring all of their family to watch the game. They use it as a getaway for the children, something I would whole heartedly support, as I believe in the family unit and anything I can do that allows the family unit to be able to afford to watch their local team I will. Of course I did not decide on this initiative to make money with all my initiatives involving the community the

04

benefit to the family unit. Also may I thank all the schools that have joined the passport scheme that allows all persons under the age of 14 to come to a match free of charge, yes totally free, as long as they are accompanied by an elder who is only charged the concession price. This initiative hopefully will grow and bring young players to the club to join our development squads, our academy, under-21s and then the firstteam, but if you do not want to play football and you just want to join our band of young supporters, please do you are all very welcome. I have been advised by Mike Green that those schools that have visited us and have be a guest at ground have returned home and advised their parents how much they enjoyed the experience, but whatever scheme you are involved in you are always very welcome to SCTs the club’s guest. Since I last wrote my programme notes we have visited Thurrock on a cold Wednesday evening, it was a hard match and once again the officials officiating were very poor. Ian and I were level with the penalty box during throughout the game and on three occasions when the linesman put the flag up he was totally incorrect with his view of the situation something that was accepted by the home supporters as well.

But taking that away from the equation Romford’s goal was an unfortunate error in my opinion from our keeper. But if you take the remainder of the match, our keeper kept us in the contest with a number of point blank saves, some may feel my comments are very critical, but as I was a goalkeeper throughout my short time in senior football I know that goalkeepers remember errors rather than the saves. Our keeper is a young man that needs senior games, but also requires professional coaching and hopefully when Andy is fitter he will be able to assist with what Craig is doing at this time and give Tom the benefit of his experience. In my opinion our keeper Tom is a work in progress and will be a great asset to this club for the future. However, whatever I feel personally, he is a young man that has stepped up to the plate after Andy Walker suffered his terrible injury. Something I have noticed is that the players in front of him are talking to him and being supportive, so any errors are quickly forgotten as was shown on Wednesday evening due to the number of point blank saves that he made to keep us in the game. They are supporting him which is a great sign of a team in harmony, be assured if the defence was not happy

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

with a goalkeeper they quickly let you know on-and-off the field. So keep up the good work Tom. Let’s carry on onwards and upwards remembering the league means nothing when you are in a winning team. I had one of the last meetings with the SCT and Peabody management this week, where I confirmed the content of my original termination letter, first draft sent in February 2016. Thamesmead Town Football Club will be leaving SCT at the end of the season, we hope to continue to run our academies in partnership with SCL our education providers, but I was advised surprisingly during that meeting that, although I was still awaiting on a contract to sign, that we may not be able to run our academies at the SCT from September 2017. If that is the case I will have to advise the SCL of Peabody’s decision, and if we cannot overcome this decision we will, at the end of April 2017, leave totally being involved at SCT. For those that are saying under their breaths, I think PBB has made the wrong decision for the club leaving SCT, let me once again advise you of the only reasons I made that difficult decision. Initially I had two years of our licence remaining finishing April 2018, around January of 2016 I wrote to Mick Hays the previous CEO asking whether the club could have a 5-year licence or, if possible, even a 10-year. Unfortunately, it was agreed that, although they were in favour of considering a 5-year agreement, they were not able to advise me of the possible yearly charges for those 5-years, and as this is a business I needed to know what the charges would be. In the end I was advised that it would be more than the final year charges, but until the budgets were completed they could not offer me a figure. Around pre-season my new team management discussed the training

facilities required and the meeting was minutes and terms agreed in writing within e-mails. Then our management team started arranging friendlies and bringing players, when we were advised that rather than our training times being as they were agreed they were now being changed to, as we call them, the graveyard shift 8:30 -10:00pm, of course I got involved. It was decided by the SCT management that what had been agreed and they fully accepted a different time had been agreed between all parties, but it was now decided that in future the SCT would treat their teams as the main importance, leaving my team management to either accept the new terms or leave. Therefore, after detailed discussions it became very apparent that we as a club in our opinion were not going to benefit from being at the SCT in the future mainly due to the facts of the SCT current financial position now that Peabody had taken over. Therefore I respected their view and as I said there were two options; close the club down at the end of the season 2016-17, something I did not see as a genuine factor, even though for some members that have been at this club many more years felt it was the only way forward. So I disagreed and after discussions with my management it was agreed that we should try and find a new home and since July of last year I have been on that quest. Although I have, to date, not signed the actual contract with another club that will allow the first-team to play at their stadium. I have recently had our pending moved agreed in principle by both the FA and our league. All that remains is for the paperwork to be raised, the financial terms to be sanctioned as fully laid out within the ground share agreement and we are ready for go. I would think before the end of this month I will be in a position to formally

advise the public and the football community of our plans for the future, be assured we are moving. Finally I would like it put in writing that since I was involved with this club there have been many times I could have walked away from our dealings with our landlords due to reasons on both sides. I feel both parties could have dealt with matters differently that may have allowed us to continue to play at SCT, maybe I have been too stubborn with what I wanted, but I felt I was being fair. We are going so I would like to at this time thank all the SCT staff for their unselfish assistance throughout our period at SCT, and I am sure that our oppositions over the years would agree that although they may have had to wait sometimes, the food, the service and those smiling faces all made it worthwhile. A special thanks to the chef for the food that was prepared for the players home and away that was second to none, I will miss having a chat with the bar staff, but I am afraid that is life, so now at the end of this season will be a new era for the club so I thank you all for your help and friendship. I hope that will stop the whispers, we are a business so I have to try and run it as a business as I am the owner and single financial funder of the club. I feel I do not have to ask permission from anyone to make such decisions, and I will stand by my decision that I have made are correct and they will ensure the financial stability of the club. Be assured there has been many hours of soul searching and burning the midnight oil and I genuinely feel that now I have made the right decision. I, at this time, also thank the owners of our new home for all of their assistance with this matter and hopefully we will enjoy the next fiveyears the length of our new ground share with a further option of five-years. MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW Good afternoon everyone to all our own supporters and of course the officials, players and supporters of Cheshunt – welcome to Bayliss Avenue. It’s been a difficult week given that because we had a game on Wednesday we haven’t been able to train. And on top of that we’ve had a bug running through the camp as well, and I think that that showed on Wednesday against a very hard working Romford team. We knew what we were going to be face, but I was disappointed with the

way that we started as I didn’t think we played very well in the opening half.

half – but I was more disappointed with our thought process throughout the night.

They got into some good areas in the first 45 but so did we, and how we weren’t on the scoresheet at half time is beyond me.

We were offside too many times against a very high line that they played – we didn’t really get our third man runs going but even what I would consider an under par performance – as I told the lads after the game – we’ve gone down to ten men and not been beaten and that’s the sign of how far we as a group and side we’ve come.

But at the same time so did they – it was pretty open first half, but I honestly thought they were the better side. We had a right go at the boys at the break and the second half was obviously better – that cold wind was obviously strong as well so we took that into account for the first

One defeat in ten (so Greenie tells me) the run now stands at and that’s great – just don’t get beaten that’s the message as always and we’ll see

“We’ve had a bug running through the camp and I think that that showed on Wednesday” 06

MANAGER’S NOTES

where it takes us. Obviously there’s still quite a way to go – we didn’t lose on Wednesday, but I’m happy to admit that I’m far from happy at the way we’ve been playing, not just on our winning run but as throughout the season. We don’t worry about going a goal down as we know that we will create chances – whether we take them or not is another thing. We proved that last Saturday when we went a goal down with ten minutes of the first half left against Bowers, but should have gone in 3-1 up at least. We didn’t, but we carried on knocking on the door after half time and got our just rewards. I think we’ve been playing well all

season – we didn’t get the results at the start but we’re starting to now. Which is why to go down to ten men on Wednesday against a side that is causing others problems this year – remember they won 3-1 at Phoenix a couple of weeks ago – is just what this league is all about which is why I believe we got what could be a valuable point in midweek. I like our opponents today. I think Cheshunt are one of the teams that will be up there come the end of the season, but if we do what we do, I really don’t fear anyone in this league – we’ll treat everyone exactly the same as we did on Wednesday when we had one of the supposed “easier” fixtures from the neutrals viewpoint – but we know it’s not like that!

I’d like to finish by sending our best wishes to Ellis Green – Eilis missed the game at Romford on Wednesday night because of a close family illness – I’m hoping that he’ll be back and available to be part of the squad today if circumstances allow. We all know how important football is to all of us, but family will always come first… Hope to see you in the Mead Bar after the game when I’m told that I’m going to win one of the “Lucky Squares”! I’ll believe that if it happens… Cheers Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

Welcome all to Bayliss Avenue today as we host Cheshunt. It’s been a great month for us so far with a run of wins since Boxing Day, we’re back up to full strength in the squad and confidence is high. We start today with no major injuries to report. Vinesy made a return to

the squad on Wednesday following his spell out with a hamstring problem. Kinchy remained in the side albeit sporting a bright blue strapping around his head after his nasty cut last Saturday against Bowers and Pitsea. Aaron made his first appearance for a couple of weeks coming on as a late sub

on Wednesday after recovering from a virus over the Christmas period which kept him out of the side. That’s all from me I hope you all enjoy the game and have a safe journey home. Carly Payne First-team Physio

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Welcome everyone to SCT for today’s Ryman League match against Cheshunt, we hope the players, committee and supporters enjoy their brief stay with us. Our season continued in a winning vein last Saturday in an entertaining game against Bowers and Pitsea who were an impressive side. I thought we played really well and gave a work-man-like team performance and deserved our 2-1 win, courtesy of goals from Bode and Alex Teniola. Moving on to today’s opponents, Cheshunt, who were many people’s

pre-season favourites. Although they did hit a patch of inconsistent performances that has seen them slip out of the play-off positions they are still a very good side and today will prove a tough encounter. Off the field having attended a league meeting last weekend I can tell you the Ryman will cease sponsoring the league at the end of this season, it is indeed a sponsorship that has been in place for twenty years - in fact the longest sponsorship in non-league football!

We have also been awarded the team of the month performance by the Ryman League for our excellent 5-1 victory away to Tilbury, the award will be presented at a home match in the near future. Thamesmead are up against it this weekend having to contend with midweek football and a sickness bug in the camp.

After rescuing a point on Wednesday in a 1-1 draw with Romford, the Mead turn their attentions to Cheshunt, a side five places and eight points ahead of them in the standings. Afforded the luxury of no midweek exploits, the Ambers bounced back from their shock 2-0 loss to Waltham Abbey by overturning Bury Town 3-1 and will be high on confidence at the SCT.

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Three points for the away side could see them climb into the play-off places should results go their way, while a triumph for Thamesmead may see them climb another place in the table. Looking at the two team’s season not much seperates the duo, with Cheshunt scoring 51 times, two less than Thamesmead, but have only conceded 44 goals to the Mead’s 50. All this points to an even contest, and don’t be surprised to see honours even at the full-time whistle.

CLUB HISTORY Cheshunt Football Club was formed in around 1880, just 17 years after the FA codified the laws of football. They played at Cheshunt Cricket Club’s Recreation ground.

After finishing bottom four seasons on the trot and in debt, they disbanded in 1931 when the cricket club raised the rent. At the time they were the oldest amateur club in Hertfordshire. In July 1946, at a public meeting in the Co-op Hall in Waltham Cross, a group of local businessmen decided to resurrect the club, using junior side Crossbrook Sports as the basis for the new team, with Roy Bailey as manager. The new club applied for and were accepted into the London League, playing in division one for the 1946-47 season. They won the League Cup and Herts Charity Shield. Initially, home games were played at the Gothic sports ground, off Theobalds Lane, east of the Great Cambridge Road, before moving to College Road the following season. Cheshunt then won the division one title in 1947/48 and again in 1948/49 season and reached the Herts Senior Cup final for the first time. The 1949/50 season saw us in the London League Premier division and playing at our newly opened Cheshunt Stadium on Theobalds Lane. We won the championship - beating Tilbury on the last day of the season to clinch the title. The side that won the London League in 1950 included many talented players, including Arthur Ault, Fred Pointing and Dudley Sapsford, but most notably Ralph Wetton. Cheshunt were members of the Delphian League from 1951/52 and 1954/55, rejoined the London League

between 1955/56 and 1958/59 and then left to become founder members of the Aetolian League between 1959/60 and 1961/2 - all without achieving any notable success. Cheshunt joined the Spartan League for the 1962/63 season and won the title at the first attempt. The following season the team won the Spartan League Cup. For the 1964/65 season, Cheshunt joined the Athenian League, playing in division two. The following season we finished runners-up under the management of Terry Medwin, the former Spurs and Wales international. That same year, we lifted the Herts Charity Shield. The division one title was won in 1967/68, beating Wembley in another head-to-head championship decider. We joined the Premier Division in the 1968/69 season and achieved respectable positions right through to winning the Athenian in the 1975/76 season, guided by the club’s most successful manager, John Drabwell. Cheshunt’s time in the Premier Division saw the Club’s most successful period since the 1940s winning various cups. Cheshunt joined the Isthmian League Division Two in 1977/78. We found little success until the 1981/82 season. In 1986/87 Cheshunt were relegated into the Spartan League and spent the next six seasons in a state of persistent frustration, unable to achieve the consistency needed for promotion. Cheshunt rejoined division three of the Isthmian League for the 1993/94 season and achieved promotion to division two at the first attempt. The club was relegated to division three in 1997/98, but bounced back immediately the following season.

THE OPPOSITION

We consolidated with mid-table positions until being effectively relegated to the new division two at the end of the 2001/02 season due to League restructuring and ground improvements not meeting League deadlines. In season 2002/03, Cheshunt won the division two title (our first league title for 27 years), reached three cup finals and also achieved the necessary ground-grading to play at a higher level. With the FA restructuring of the non-league pyramid taking effect for the following season, Cheshunt were promoted to the Isthmian Premier division for 2004/05. We found ourselves relegated on the final day of the season only to then find we were saved due to the disbandment of Hornchurch that summer. However, the Ambers were moved across into the Southern League, where we spent a memorable 2005/06 season (finishing two places above the relegation zone) and lifting the Herts Charity Cup for the first time in the club’s history. 2007/08 saw the club break plenty of records for all the wrong reasons. Five managers took up residence in the hot-seat. Cheshunt were placed in the Ryman Division 1 North for the 2008/09 season, finishing 14th. The 2009/10 season saw a new squad, a new management team of Bob Dearie and Barry Green, and a more stable, supportive environment. In 2011 Cheshunt Sports & Leisure Ltd took over the Club with Dean Williamson installed as Chairman. Ensuring stability was the first priority along with investment in the facilities to build a solid foundation from which the club could grow.

Good afternoon and here’s hoping for three points for Tom and the lads today.

first game on Wednesday against Abbey School which are the school connected with Dover Athletic.

Last week, Gary took the academy scholars up the road to play Phoenix in a friendly. They had some of their younger players in the side and our lads won 3 -1. It was a well deserved win, with our captain, Alfie Day, netting from the penalty spot and our first year scholar Kofi Bright scoring two. A massive well done to the lads! The opponents manager was impressed with the way our lads played and conducted themselves.

The lads were looking forward to it although they knew it was going to be a very tough game , the match report will follow.

With new found confidence, the lads played Three Bridges on Wednesday and took a goal lead in the early minutes of the first-half through Akinwale Akinsami, only to go in 2-1 down at half time. Confidence seemed to drain from the lads and they eventually lost 6-3, Reece Derose and Millprince MideMadariola being the other scorers. Gary was disappointed that our players dropped their heads, but still saw some quality moments in our attacking play to stay positive and also thought our defensive play at times showed more maturity. Our next game was yesterday at home to Millwall and I will give you the result and match report in my next programme notes. Our satellite team played their

This week I have been busy coaching the clubs new apprentices and getting them used to full time training and making sure they are committing themselves to the education side of the apprenticeship as well. Some have taken it in their stride whilst others are taking time to adapt, but I believe we have some lads here that could do well and progress and develop into our U21 side and more importantly, the first team. Thanks must go to Mick Northwood and his staff up at Long Lane for making us all very welcome. Our education provider and staff have also been fantastic. It’s still very early days yet, but fingers crossed for the clubs possible future players. If we can add these to our first-team squad, where Tom and his coaching staff can then further develop them I’m convinced we will have a formula for success . Yours in sport. A TRIBUTE

A TRIBUTE TO

GRAHAM TAYLOR The news this week that former England boss GRAHAM TAYLOR has passed away shocked the football world. Here is a personal tribute to a true gentleman of English football from our very own MIKE GREEN… Do I not like that! Five words that if you say in the presence of any football fan of my era will forever be associated with one man who tragically passed away on Thursday at the age of just 72 – Graham Taylor. He was of course best known for his three year spell at the start of the 1990’s when he was the first to experience the turning of the tabloid press in a campaign where he was dubbed a “turnip” by at least one of them, and “left” the position after a now infamous World Cup qualifier against the Dutch in Rotterdam in 1993. It became infamous because of a “fly-on-the-wall” type documentary that was allowed to follow him in the build up to that game. The knives were out for Taylor after “failure” in Euro 92 in Sweden – he was the manager who substituted Gary Lineker in his final international – and when qualification came down to beating the Dutch (Gullit, Van Basten, Koeman et al) in their own back yard, he set out a team that came ridiculously close to qualifying! Whilst people always remember the Koeman free-kick that set the Dutch on their way, few remember that 20

minutes prior, the now Everton boss had hauled down David Platt when he was clean through “only” receiving a yellow card…

That decision effectively was the final nail in Taylor’s England’s career – a point that the man himself knew immediately. The line which was shown in the documentary (which was called “the Impossible Game” if I remember correctly) that the man himself used to the fourth official that night showed the honesty of the man – “Can you thank him for that (decision) – it’s probably just got me the sack!” Yet despite that he never backed away from the game and I was fortunate to meet the man himself when I attended a Radio Five Sports panel show at Highbury that he was on. The show was broadcast for an hour and a half, yet for an hour both before and after he was the one member of the panel who spoke with everyone. I’d only just begun reporting and I remember asking him if he had any advice for me – the words have lived with me at every game ever since. He said to me, “Enjoy yourself and always be honest! If you don’t – take a week off and see how much you miss the game!” It really summed the man up that given the abuse he received rightly or wrongly as England boss that he returned to club management with Villa and Watford where of course he made his name, and where I first saw

him in the old “away” team dug-out at Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium when his Watford side won 3-2 in a game in the late seventies which found its way onto the “old” Match of the Day in the days of Jimmy Hill and Bob Wilson with just two or three matches each week – times have changed huh?!? In my book the man went to another level when he joined the BBC Radio commentary team alongside Mike Ingham and Alan Green on England games where despite the numerous occasions that presented itself, he never once criticised the manager. Away from football he worked tirelessly with various charities – being the patron of one which collected old kits and distributed them to disadvantaged kids all over the world. I instigated one collection when I was helping out at a Kent League Club, and we not only received a certificate that was signed by Taylor, but we also received a personally hand written note of thanks from the man himself! He didn’t have to do it – but that was just the man himself off the pitch. No coach will ever take a side from the current League Two (Division Four in the old days) to challenging for the Premier League title in five years, but that’s what Taylor did with Watford… He’s been described as a coach before his time and an innovator – he was one of a kind, he really way! “Do I not like that!” news – Graham Taylor RIP

BOWERS & PITSEA Knight (39)

Two second half goals from Alex and Bode sealed not only a come from behind win for the Mead but also win number eight out of nine as December’s incredible form continued into 2017. All was set for a titanic from game of 2017 at Bayliss Avenue as although the Mead had won seven of our last eight, it has to be remembered that the visitors travelled from Essex with a better record - winning nine of their last ten although they arrived on the back of a 1-5 mauling by league leaders Maldon & Tiptree on Bank Holiday Monday. Both sides made encouraging starts although both managers will have been disappointed that their sides weren’t in front. Twice early on Bowers missed good chances before the Mead first real chance fell to Alex after Vinesy had brilliantly cushioned Jay’s cross into

his strike partner’s path. Only a great challenge stopped the Mead man from opening the scoring... something sadly the visitors were to do by half time, but not before a long period of treatment for the skipper after a clash of heads left him with his head bandaged almost ala Terry Butcher all those years ago when on England duty! Bowers took the lead on 39 minutes when Knight cut in from the left and as the Mead defence backed off the former Hornchurch man skimmed home a low shot from the edge of the box. The goal really kick started the home sides afternoon and they could have been level by half time as in the remaining twelve minutes (six normal and six added), the Mead created FIVE clear chances.

Greenie’s drive was brilliantly tipped over by Madden; Greenie’s teasing Thamesmead Town Line-Up cross was just Substitutes 1. Tom Wellham too far in front 2. Harvey Brand of Vinesy’ back 12. earlier; Bode saw the keeper pull off a good block before the resulting corner fell to Knighty who this time grazed the right post! Half time arrived at the wrong time for the Mead as it seemed to knock the boys out of their stride as Bowers again enjoyed the early stages of the second half. Manor saw a shot deflect off Knighty, wrong footing keeper Tom before looping onto the roof of the net. From the corner, Nathan was on hand to protect the Mead goal by a great goal line clearance. The Mead finally got back on level terms just before the hour - although they did need a “helping hand” to get back into the game on the hour. Greenie whipped in a free-kick which inexplicably Bowers keeper Madden spilled and Alex was on hand to sweep home his eighth goal of the season and his fourth in four games. Within four minutes, the Mead were in front and the goal scorer had turned provider as Madden partially redeemed himself for his earlier faux pas by making a fine low save to deny Alex a second. “Unfortunately” for the Bowers keeper, Bode was on hand to slide the ball into the unguarded net for his first home goal this season and his sixth of the campaign. A pulsating game then saw chances at both ends and one incredible escape for the Mead goal that saw a six yard box scramble that culminated on keeper Tom sitting on the ball!

REF Q & A

FROM THE REFEREE’S PERSPECTIVE... This season has yet again seen many referee’s come in for criticism for some of their decisions – from “making mistakes” handling Premier League games on television to games in the Ryman League and lower. The official here last weekend was JAMAAL HORNE, who not only is a Ryman League Referee, but is also a Referee’s Instructor with the London FA, and after chatting after the game about some of the recent well publicised refereeing “performances” – Mr Dean’s at the London Stadium was just one – he agreed to talk to us today… We started by asking about his own playing career – he told us,

20

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

“I started at West Ham academy, also played for Crystal Palace and Reading to name a few. “I then played for Hayes FC and Sutton United in the Conference South before having brief stints with Tooting & Mitcham and Merstham before deciding to give refereeing a go. “Whilst in a relegation dogfight in the Conference South, we had a relegation 6 pointer away from home. It was a huge match with a massive crowd, but both teams really wanted to play football – foul tackles and dissent were at a minimum. The ref made it all about him and I said to myself, ‘surely I can do better than this guy.’ Two years later I took up the whistle.

One thing that often surprises many is that unlike cricket, not more ex-players become officials, but that doesn’t surprise Jamaal! “No it doesn’t surprise me,” he said. “From a footballers perspective i.e. from the outside looking in, refereeing is running around a muddy pitch, getting shouted at by aggressive men. When in reality it is putting all of your football experience to good use, giving back to the game, an alternate career path, a great way to keep fit and earn some money. “Footballers need to understand that coaching and management is very crucial to the beautiful game, but when you compare

REF Q & A

it to refereeing ask yourself one question. When was the last time a referee got sacked?” A true point indeed, but we wondered what has changed most about refereeing since he started? “Some laws have changed a lot like the interpretation of offside and cosmetic law changes like the colour of undergarments and sock tape. “Also what has changed is that refereeing is now a lot more about delivering what the game wants rather than following the Laws of the game to the letter. “For example, Law 1 states that corner flags are compulsory, so therefore if there are no corner flags the match should be abandoned. If a referee did abandon for that reason, he would be heavily criticised. So nowadays, the referee may just report the incident, but the game would definitely play. I call it the ‘show must go on’ mentality. “That said, overall, I am happy with the current set of laws. I know most football clubs would disagree with me, especially in regards to offside, but in reality, I think most games at this level run fairly smoothly. I haven’t been involved in any games at all that are littered in controversy because of a particular law.

With television demands on players and managers alike growing it seems by the season, we wondered about Jamaal’s view on referee’s facing the music as well. His considered response was, “I understand that football is a passionate subject and refereeing is a service and technically part of a spectator’s ticket goes towards the referee’s fees so therefore they should be able to make a complaint or request answers if they are unhappy with the service. “Around 2007, referees at the top did answer questions from the media and it didn’t work. People felt their questions were not answered and they felt the referees were dodging questions. As for me, I will always answer questions about my performance. I need my customers e.g. players, spectators, club officials etc., to know that I am approachable and I am confident

in my decisions and willing to explain them. It works very well for me. So if anyone would like to “cross to the dark side” and become an official, what’s the next step we asked. Smiling, Jamaal said, “Please contact me asap as I run courses. Refereeing can be extremely rewarding. It is a great way to keep fit, stay in touch with the game, learn the game from another angle and it is another source of income!” In 2016 Jamaal received recognition for his work when the London FA voted him “Referee Volunteer of the Year!”We’d like to thank Jamaal for talking to us and would like to remind you that the comments and answers that he’s given are his own views and opinions.

“I am happy with the current set of laws. I know most football clubs would disagree with me!” THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

MATCH ACTION

ROMFORD

1

THAMESMEAD TOWN

Bichard (28)

Anidugbe (87)

It was Bode to the rescue as the Mead stretched the recent run to twenty five points out of a possible thirty at an ever increasingly cold Ship Lane in Thurrock against a Romford side who belied their lowly League position. The Mead salvaged what had seemed an unlikely point when Lewis was unfortunate to be shown a straight red card for a challenge that most referees would have only showed yellow. But sadly for the Mead and Lewis, referee Head was having one of those inconsistent evenings that is sadly becoming the norm rather than the exception. To be fair though, the man in the middle wasn’t helped by some strange decisions from his assistants which all in all was a shame to a game that deserved far more. Both sides contributed to an absorbing contest that was played for the most part in a great spirit but all too often “interesting” decisions left

many of the crowd scratching their heads. The home side had the best of the early chances with Green rattling the Mead bar from 25 yards, before Reynolds cleared not only the Mead net from six yards but also sent the ball into the marshland between the ground and the M25! For the Mead, a long Leon through caused chaos in the home box with Alex going close before the ball was scrambled clear. The home side were ahead just before the half hour when Bicard’s shot across Tom caught a horrible bounce just in front of the Mead keeper as it skipped into the net. The Mead’s response was almost instance as Lewis thundered a header just past the left post from Jay’s corner. Tom then redeemed himself with a fabulous save to deny Green as the home side broke swiftly from defending a Mead corner, whilst at the other end, home keeper Chafer pulled off an equally good save to deny Alex an equaliser before half time.

22

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

It wasn’t Alex’s night as early in the second period he had what appeared a perfectly good goal ruled out by a very late flag, before keeper Tom chalked up another brilliant

Wednesday 11th January Ship Lane Attendance: 101 Ryman League point blank block to again deny Reynolds. From the resulting corner Bicard fired over from six yards when completely unmarked. Bode then went close for the visitors – drilling fractionally over on the angle as he raced onto the rebound as Alex’s shot was blocked. Then came the challenge on the half way that initially it seemed had left Reynolds in a lot of pain following Lewis’ tackle. It would be fair to say that the Mead central defender took a chance with the challenge in the modern climate although the recovery of the Romford man was impressive. The Mead needed a saviour, and as the game was at Ship Lane, Thurrock, we should have expected it to be Bode. He reminded us after the game that he scored his first Mead goal on the ground last season, and had already a double in the August win over the Landlords. And so it came to pass that Bode went on a powerful run with just five minutes remaining leaving defenders in his wake before firing the ball beyond Chafer to send the Mead contingent in the crowd wild. It could have been even better for the Mead as first Ellis went agonisingly close from distance as he fired just over. A point though on this occasion was a good point – a fact that the Gaffer confirmed after the game when he said, “We’ve gone down to ten men and not been beaten and that’s the sign of how far we as a group and side we’ve come.”

FROM THE MAIL-BOX

FROM THE

MAIL-BOX We received an email this week which followed an incident that happened in the bar at Aveley after our game there on Bank Holiday Monday. With the sender’s permission we have printed Barry Gibbs’ email in full below which was headed Aveley v Thamesmead… “With regard to the above mentioned fixture last week I attended the match and then went to bar to wait for my son who is part of the Aveley squad. Whilst sitting it the bar I became ill with what appeared to be an allergic reaction. It escalated quite quickly and I asked someone to call me an ambulance. During my wait for the ambulance and first response unit I received some very welcome help and assistance from several people who were in the bar at the time. Two of the people who really did help were from your club – one was a lady supporter and the other was your physio – again a lady. Both were very considerate and helped to keep me calm and I cannot tell you how grateful I was that they were both there for me at that time.

Can you please pass on my sincere thanks to your Physio for all she did for me and let her know that her help assisted in me making a full recovery and being allowed home about 6 hours later! I do not know the name of the lady supporter so it will be difficult to thank her, but I will look for her the next time Aveley and Thamesmead play each other. I hope you can assist me with this matter and thank you in advance for doing so, Kind regards, Barry Gibbs” We have confirmed to Mr Gibbs that the two ladies that he so glowingly

refers to in his email are our physio CARLY and KAY who is keeper Tom Wellham’s mum! (right in the inset picture) When he confirmed that he was OK with us printing his email today so that the ladies credit and praise that they both fully and rightly deserve, Mr Gibbs told us, “I am OK with you including my e mail – as far as I am concerned they, as you say, deserve a lot of credit and thanks. They are top girls in my opinion!” And we agree… LADIES WE ARE ALL PROUD OF YOUR ACTIONS AND WE SALUTE YOU!
