TODAY’S OPPONENTS...

GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY 2016 kicks off with North Ferriby United hosting Gainsborough Trinity in what should be an interesting game with plenty of familiar faces.

The Trinity team will feature a number of former Ferriby players and we give a warm welcome back to Jonathan D’Laryea, Jamie Yates, Matt Wilson, Anthony Wilson, Nathan Jarman and loanee Jonathan Hedge. Trinity sit in mid-table at the time of print on 27 points from their 19 games this season. A victory against the Villagers would push them in contention for a play-off spot whilst three points for Ferriby would close the gap at the top. Due to printer constraints this programme went to print on the 18th of December so the information contained is correct as of then.

MANAGER: Steve Housham Housham was appointed Player/Manager of Brigg in 2007, and shortly afterwards retired from playing to tackle his new position in a non-playing capacity. In May 2011 he quit his post at Brigg and took up the role as youth team manager at his hometown club Gainsborough Trinity where he briefly worked under manager Brian Little, before replacing Little as caretaker manager in August 2011. Following five wins out of five in caretaker charge at The Northolme Housham was appointed as full time manager on 12 September 2011.

The club’s first season in Division Two of the League saw them finish seventh, but a gradual decline in form saw them finish in the bottom half of the table every season until 1904. Midland League, finishing third in 1912–13 and second in 1913–14, after which they unsuccessfully applied for readmission to the Football League. When the Football League created a new Third Division North in 1921, Trinity applied for membership, but

were again unsuccessful. The club won the Midland League title in 1927–28, and the following season defeated Football League opposition in the FA Cup for the first time since losing their League status, beating Crewe 3–1 in the first round, before losing to Chesterfield in the second round. In 1931–32 they beat Crewe again in the first round, before losing 5–2 at home to Watford. In 1937–38 Trinity beat Port Vale in the first round, before losing to

fellow non-League club Yeovil & Petters United. Another Football League team was beaten the following season, when Trinity knocked out Gateshead in the first round, before losing to Doncaster Rovers. The club won a third Midland League title in 1948–49, remaining in the league until it was disbanded in 1960. They spent a single season in Division Two of the Yorkshire League, before returning to

a reformed Midland League in 1961. Trinity won their fourth Midland League title in 1966–67, before becoming founder members of the new Northern Premier League in 1968. The club applied to join the Football League again in 1975 and 1976, but received only a single vote on each occasion. When the Northern Premier League added a second division in 1987, Trinity were placed in the Premier Division, where they remained until becoming founder members of the Conference North in 2004. In 2011–12 the club finished fourth, qualifying for the promotion play-offs. After beating Halifax Town in the semi-finals, Trinity lost the final 1–0 to Nuneaton Town. In 2012–13 the club reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy for the first time, losing to eventual winners Wrexham.

MATCH REPORT 2 1

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED King (49), Gray (90+2)

GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY Beesley (80)

January 1, 2015 | Conference North | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Att: 384 Despite it finally taking a Mark Gray goal in added time to win this game, there is no doubt that Ferriby thoroughly deserved to win. They probably should have won by the proverbial country mile such was their dominance throughout the game.

Russ Fry almost The Villagers ahead in the second minute with a 20-yard free-kick that came back off the crossbar with Gainsborough keeper Jan Budtz beaten. Ferriby thought they had scored after 23minutes. Jason St Juste poked the ball home from closerange after a goalmouth scramble but the referee gave a free-kick to Gainsborough for a foul by Denton on a defender. Ferriby had a series of corners but half-chances could not be converted. Danny Clarke, returning to the club, was unlucky on three occasions. Budtz made a very good double save from Clarke just before half-time.

Gainsborough started the second-half with more purpose and Margetts fired a shot at Nicklin. Ferriby responded with a shot from Kendall that was blocked but the ball rebounded to Liam King who shot home from close range after 49 minutes. Gainsborough had a goal disallowed for offside on 58 minutes. This led to another spell of Ferriby pressure. A goal-bound Russ Fry shot hit Tom Denton before being cleared for a corner. Jason St Juste’s corner found Denton who headed wide. Gainsborough still threatened little during the half but they got an equaliser in the 80th minute. Tom Davie’s free-kick reached Jake Picton at the far post from where he put the ball across goal for substitute Paul Beesley to score from close-range. However, justice was done in the second minute of added time. Budtz turned Josh Wilde’s 18-yard shot for a corner which was taken by St Juste. The ball reached Gray who shot home from close-range.

Matt Badcock of the NLP discusses the new “Football Firsts” feature... Everyone remembers their first time. Mine was at Cambridge United’s Abbey Stadium. It’s the day lift really begins. The first time you watch a football match - live.

After watching the U’s in friendly action, my first top flight game was Tottenham against Sheffield United. Paul Walsh scored a hat-trick and Nayim got the other in a 4-0 win, but I was mainly in awe of seeing Gazza. Not that I support Spurs. I was happy watching anything, from top to bottom. My dad was involved with the Eastern Counties League and he shared his love of NonLeague football with me. We went to Sudbury once and I went home with a club teddy bear as a keepsake from the chairman. My dad would often have to catch up with the referee after the games. I’d wait outside the changing rooms with the scent of liniment wafting down the corridor. I loved that smell. And I’ll never forget the first ever trip to Wembley Stadium. The FA Vase final in 1991,

Guiseley v Gresley Rovers. It finished 4-4. Not too bad for your debut at the home of football! I’d just turned six so don’t recall much of the game, but the stand out memory is running up the stairs to get to our seats while the national anthem was on because we were late. It’s probably why I enjoy covering FA Vase finals so much now. Remember your first game? We’ve started a new feature in The NLP this season called, Football Firsts. As it says on the tin, it’s about all those early memories and why we all fall in love with football. The first pair of boots, the first kit, your first footballing hero. It’s been interesting speaking to players about how it all began. Chester striker Ross North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

Hannah remembers going to watch Sheffield Wednesday with his grandad having normally been at a family house near Hillsborough listening the supporters’ roar. Didcot Town’s joint-manager – and club legend – Jamie Heapy recalled going to watch Reading and his dad taking a little step for him to stand on so he could see. Danny Cowley, Braintree’s manager, told a story from watching West Ham and how his brother Nicky, also his assistant, cried when the Hammers scored because the crowd was so loud! However young or old you are, everyone has that starting point, and it’s why you’re at a game today.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S

At the halfway point of the season Sam Shepherd reviews the season so far... As this is the first game of the New Year I thought I would use this column to review the season so far and so far it has been a good season with a couple of disappointments. To date we have only been defeated three times in the league and two of those were against Nuneaton. We sit nicely placed in the play-offs and have scored the most goals in the National League North so it certainly isn’t a dull season to be a Ferriby fan. Ferriby lost on the opening day of the season at Tamworth but didn’t taste defeat again until they were knocked out of the FA cup by Stalybridge some 17 games later. That run included 13 league games however a few too many of those were draws which saw us a bit lower down in the table than we could have been. Since then we have kicked on with 5 wins from the last 6 games in the

league which has moved us up to our current position of third. Unfortunately we are already out of both cup competitions in contrasting circumstances. We missed out on a trip to Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup after agonisingly losing 8-7 on penalties to Stalybridge. We should have had the game won in the original tie and we were eventually punished for our missed chances. The FA Trophy defeat was more disappointing as we were beaten at home by Stocksbridge Park Steels. After the brilliant day at Wembley last season it was a bitter pill to swallow losing in the qualifying round but on a positive note this allows us to focus solely on pushing for promotion. Ferriby have played some excellent football this season and have scored the most goals on the North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

league by a reasonable distance. The win at Chorley optimised the skill and spirit of this team, 2-0 down at half time Ferriby totally turned it round with goals from Kendall King and Bateson in the 95th minute to steal the three points at the death. Performances like this have been common this season and that has to be credited to the manager who is once again performing miracles on a tight budget and with a small squad. Today we face our local rivals Gainsborough and this is a match I always look forward to. Today also sees the return of Anthony Wilson and Nathan Jarman and others so I hope our defence are on their game today! Enjoy the game, Sam
