MEAD MATTERS

MEAD

MATTERS WELCOME TO THE SCT Good evening everyone and to the players, officials and supporters of TILBURY, welcome to the SCT! Ten game left for ourselves and nine for our visitors, it seems strange that tonight sees the first meeting of the two sides this season. We’d also like to apologise that tonight’s programme isn’t its usual 40 pages. Because of our visitors delayed Essex Senior Cup game with Redbridge, we weren’t able to confirm tonight’s fixture until after Saturday’s programme had gone to print that this evenings game would take place tonight. Normal service will be resumed for the weekend...

MAN OF THE MATCH

WE TRY AGAIN

Tonight we’re pleased to say that we not only have an award for the Mead Man of the Match (as usual “sponsored” by ERIKA COOPER), but we also have an overall Man of the Match, which for one night only has been sponsored by a follower of both the Mead and the Dockers - “Lowestoft Lee!” The announcement of both awards will take place shortly after tonight’s Final Whistle

After last Tuesday’s postponement against Haringey Borough, the game has been rearranged for a fifth time and will now take place on TUESDAY 5TH APRIL at 7:45pm.

FAREWELL TO DUNCS Last week the club said goodbye to Club Captain DEREK DUNCAN who has left the SCT for pastures new. He’s linked up again with former Mead boss Keith McMahon at VCD Athletic and we’d like to formerly thank Derek for his time with the club and wish him well for the future!

FANCY WATCHING THE U21S? Our under 21s are at home tomorrow night (Tuesday) when they host the Under 21s from CHESHUNT at 7:45pm - Gary and the boys would love to see you and to receive your backing! THAMESMEAD TOWN vs Tilbury

THE OPPOSITION

TILBURY

The Mead recorded back-to-bak victories for the first time since the end of January but know they must keep up this form in their hunt for the Play-offs.

CLUB INFO

Standing between them and another three points is Tilbury who, like Thamesmead, are still in with a glimmer of a chance at the top five.

Nickname: The Dockers Founded: 1889 Ground: Chadfields Chairman: Daniel Nash Manager: Gary Henty Last Season: 14th

Sitting just one place and a point below Thamesmead, Tilbury travel to the SCT on the back of a resounding 4-0 win away at Aveley. The win was the club’s first win in nine games as they ended a rotton run of six defeats and a draw. Thamemead know they need three points and could build up some momentum heading into clashes against Waltham Abbey, Bury Town and Barkingside.

THE OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY

Tilbury F.C. now have concrete proof that they were formed in 1889, and competed in the Gravesend League from 1889/1890.

The aim of the club was to gain success at junior level via the Essex Junior Cup, and thereby to eventually bring senior level football to the Town. At the end of the 1910/11 season, the club also lost its home ground, and the Committee decided that the club should take a break . The intended short break stretched to three seasons, and was then further extended by the outbreak of the First World War. As a result, it was not until 1919/20 that Tilbury were able to resume, this time in the South Essex League. During the Summer of 1926/27, they were granted Senior status by the Essex FA. Disaster almost struck however. Application was made to several Leagues but, one by one, they were all rejected, and it looked as though Tilbury were doomed. At the very last moment, the Kent League stepped in and offered them a place, which was eagerly accepted. Off the field the 4 seasons spent in the Kent League were a success. It was an off-field matter, though, that led to them eventually leaving the competition. The league had expanded in size greatly since Tilbury joined, and added to the difficulty of continually crossing the Thames was the end of season fixture congestion. At the end of the 1930/31 season, the committee very reluctantly took the decision that the club would have to move on. They made an application to join the London League, one of those

that had rejected them 4 years earlier, and this time were accepted.

Division Two.

Tilbury stayed in the London League until 1939, when the outbreak of the Second World War led to the disbandment of most Senior Leagues.

In 1974/75, they were the Division One Champions. 5th place in their first Premier Division season was the best Tilbury could achieve in their 5 season stay, before being relegated back to Division One.

Tilbury resumed in the London League in 1946/47, and then on a new home ground, the present Chadfields in 1947/48, and embarked upon a four season spell of much success and National recognition.

Since then, Tilbury have found things tough. They have suffered relegation on several occasions, but have mostly bounced back fairly quickly.

In 1950/51 Tilbury moved into the Corinthian League. The move into the Corinthian ranks had coincided with the gradual break up of the successful but ageing post-War side. The move back to the London League now coincided with the coming together of an extremely talented bunch of local young players that brought great success in the coming seasons. In 1957/58, Tilbury finished 3rd in the London League, but in each of the next 4 campaigns were the undisputed Champions. 1962/63 saw Tilbury move into the Delphian League. This was to coincide with that League’s last ever season. In 1963/64, that League joined the expanded Athenian League set up, becoming the bottom Division of a 3 Division set up. Tilbury were inaugural Champions of Division Two, also winning the Essex Senior Cup again. 5 seasons later, they completed the climb to the Premier Division, by winning the Division One championship. 5 seasons were spent in the Athenian Premier Division before, in 1973/74, they joined the newly formed Isthmian League

In 2004/05, Tilbury finished their one season in the Southern League Division One East in rock bottom position, and were relegated to the Essex Senior League. They bounced back immediately, and earned a return to Isthmian ranks, and have managed to remain there since. 2011/12 saw Tilbury greatly exceed their expectations, as Vaughan’s squad stayed in and around the promotion race all season, clinching a play-off place with a game to spare. Sadly, though, it ended in extra time defeat against Needham Market. The last two seasons again saw Tilbury performing creditably. In both closeseasons they lost a number of players, and had to rebuild. Once again, this summer, Tilbury have seen a number of senior players leave the club. Unfortunately, a combination of a crippling early season injury list and poor form saw Paul Vaughan stepped down as Manager in October to be replaced by Gary Henty. This brought about an almost immediate upturn in form and results, which saw the Club climb away from the relegation zone to finish in comfortable mid-table security.
