THE MANAGER
THE MANAGER
CHRIS BOLDER
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Alfreton Town to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon.
Both games against York City were tough encounters, they have some very good players and I expect them to be in the mix come the end of the season. At home there were elements of the performance I was disappointed with, but at Bootham Crescent I thought we had a very good shape about us and each player implemented the change of system well. We knew that they would have good possession of the ball and that we would have to be disciplined and work together as units. I have since had chance to watch the game back on DVD and I feel that we were wasteful in possession in the early stages of the game, but this did improve as the game wore on. When we play teams of the calibre of York it is important that when we regain possession that we retain it otherwise it becomes a big task to defend for sustained periods. To today’s game, Alfreton Town have found themselves towards the wrong end of the table of late and I know their manager will be working very hard to turn their results around. I know John well and he has been very helpful since I took over giving advice on all
aspects of managing a football club. We have to approach every game as a must-win fixture really, but obviously trying to get points off the teams in and around us is vital, so we will be going in to the game looking to assert ourselves and gain a positive result. Alfreton have not picked up the points of late, but recent reports suggest they have still been creating chances and they will see this as a good opportunity to get back to winning ways. As with all teams in this division they have some very good experienced players and they will be looking to rectify individual errors which have apparently been a part of their problem currently. Bobby Johnson has been suffering with illness of late, but hopefully he will come through training OK this week. Kojo Keyi picked up a rib injury on New Years Day, so he is a doubt at this stage. The game also saw a couple of the lads gain valuable minutes on the pitch as they work towards match fitness as well. We are constantly working hard to evaluate the playing squad, but we feel the players NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

we have brought in will be good long term additions to the club. We are creating an ethos and identity, therefore any players we bring in must fit in with this. We don’t have the biggest squad currently, so recruitment is an ongoing process and things can change very quickly in football so you have to adjust accordingly. The support of the fans has been encouraging and it was nice to see them making the journey to support the lads at York. Hopefully they can see that the lads are working extremely hard to gain positive results and the style of play is slowly being implemented. It has been a difficult period for the fans in recent times and their continued support is greatly appreciated so we will be everything in our power to gain a win today. Alfreton Town head to the Eon Visual Media Stadium hoping to bring an end to their four-game losing slump in the National League North. The Reds have slipped into the relegation zone in recent weeks and know they need to address their slide or face being entrenched in the battle for survival. Last time out Alfreton fell to a 3-1 defeat to Stockport County. A performance which lacked fire, urgency and quality, the Reds conceded three goals from set pieces and scored a late consolation from the penalty spot by Brendon Daniels. The result leaves the Reds now in the relegation zone, two points from safety after losing their eighth
league game in the last nine. The loss meant the Reds were beaten for a sixth home game on the trot, with boss John McDermott saying: “In football you do have to deal with frustration and anger from players at all levels. ““We had a good go after that, between the boxes we played well and the fans were with us, we had some good openings and we had to deal with the situation and I thought we did okay in creating openings after the red card.” Ferriby too need to pick up a muchneeded win, so we should be in for an entertaining fixture. RECENT HISTORY A European Cup winner with Nottingham Forest and former Notts County manager, Gary Mills was installed as the first full time manager at the Impact Arena in the summer of 2005. His was assisted by Darron Gee and the pair faced a huge rebuilding job with several senior players being released and a dozen new players being brought in prior to the kick-off. As the side took time to gel it was five games before a league victory was achieved and inconsistency proved a problem. The team sank to the foot of the Conference North table. A much improved run of form saw some notable wins achieved in the final third of the campaign and safety was achieved well before the final day of the season with the Reds finally finishing 17th out of 22, six points clear of the relegation zone. The 2006/07 season saw a decent-looking rebuilt squad, albeit somewhat light in numbers, following summer budget cuts in a bid to keep the club on an even keel. A second budget cut came in a couple of months into the campaign and this was followed by manager Gary Mills departing 20 months into a three year full time contract when former club Tamworth came calling in January. His assistant Darron Gee presided over one game, a win, before he too departed to team up again with his long term managerial partner. Marcus Ebdon was handed his first managerial reigns as player/manager and, despite his inexperience, he guided the club to the end of the season where the team finished a very creditable 14th, matching their best ever placing in non league’s second highest tier. Whilst the side exited all cup competitions very early, the league position was achieved with a best ever Conference North points total of 54. For the 2007/08 season, former Chesterfield and Bradford City boss Nicky Law took over as Reds manager in June having had two highly successful seasons with Buxton. Once again a major squad
rebuilding exercise was necessary and there were plenty of comings and goings throughout the season with a number of players finding the leap from lower levels too much. Holding a professional coaching licence, Law is the highest ever qualified manager to have held the Impact Arena post and his team’s early efforts won plaudits for their style of play which brought some very good wins, particularly on the road. A number of injuries and suspensions around the turn of the year saw off any ideas of a challenge for a play off place which had at one time looked possible as the club finished 16th. The 2008/09 campaign was one of the most successful in the club’s entire 50-year history despite no silverware being won. Under manager Nicky Law and assistant Russ O’Neill, the Reds finished in their highest ever position of third in Conference North and competed in the play-offs for the first time ever, narrowly losing out in the semi-finals on a 5-4 aggregate against AFC Telford United. The 2019/10 season saw the club again finish third in the final table. That they finished that high after suffering a horrendous crop of injuries mid-way through the campaign bears testament to the character and spirit within the squad. They recovered to piece together a tremendous run of form which lifted them into the play-offs for the second successive season. This time the Reds went one better, reaching the final, only to narrowly lose out 2-1 in the final at Fleetwood Town. The 2010/11 campaign saw a third promotion tilt prove ultimately successful as Law and O’Neill’s fourth season in charge at the Impact Arena ended with the side winning the Blue Square Bet North title by a ten-point margin. It is almost certainly the biggest achievement in the 52-year formation of the club which sees them now competing at the highest level of football ever in their history. YORK CITY Parkin (31, 76)
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED

Monday 1 January 2018 | Bootham Crescent | National League North | Att: 2523 Despite the result, this was a much better performance by Ferriby. There was much greater commitment and positive attitudes on display, and if this level can be maintained, there is some hope for improved results to come. As on Boxing Day, York striker Jon Parkin was the major difference between the two teams. It was his two goals, one in each half, that win the game for The Minstermen. York had the greater possession and territory throughout the game. However, Ferriby’s defence and midfield made life difficult for them with some determined harassing and tackling. Both York’s players and fans became frustrated and this, to some extent, played in to The Villagers’ hands. The game was not all one way, too. Ferriby had some significant attacking spells. Carl Stewart and Brett Agnew combined well upfront, winning the ball and troubling defenders. They have the makings of a good striking partnership, something which Ferriby have lacked all season, while the returning Alex Davidson added some impetus playing wide in midfield. Manager Chris Bolder has commented recently that he wants his players to show more confidence on the ball. He saw that confidence in lengthy periods of the game. The ball was frequently played out of, and around the defence. Players were finding space to receive passes and they looked as if they wanted the ball. Not only does this release pressure on the defence, it also helps to develop attacks. It was also one of the features that frustrated York. Ferriby’s midfield played a more controlled game and passing was generally far more accurate that the faithful Ferriby fans have become used to of late. 12
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme
The defence, despite being under pressure for longish periods, never panicked. Keeper Ross Durrant had a good game and made a number of crucial saves to deny York. It was unfortunate that it was Durrant’s mistake that allowed Parkin to score the clinching goal, Although it was a blank day for the strikers, half chances were created. It was also one of those days when clearances and blocked shots in front of goal would not just fall kindly for Ferriby. Durrant made two very good save in the 30th minute, but York’s pressure told when David Ferguson’s cross from the left found Parkin at the far post and the striker headed deftly home. York did not really go close again in the half. Adam Bolder and Agnew both drew saves from York keeper Adam Bartlett as the half closed. The second-half opened quietly and it was 11 minutes before wither side had a goal attempt. Davidson’s low long pass found Agnew whose shot was saved by Bartlett. Durrant then saved well from Connolly has York began to exert some control. The crucial moment of the game was, perhaps, not the second goal, but the sending-off of Jake Skelton after 69 minutes. Skelton and Parkin were fighting for the ball on the edge of the area when Skelton clipped the striker. Unlike many strikers, Parkin stayed up and hit the ball home. Unfortunately for both players, the referee had blown for the foul so had no option, but to disallow the goal and send-off Skelton. Neither set of fans was happy with the decision. The freekick was wasted. The clinching goal came after 76 minutes. Durrant came to meet a cross but he pounced and the ball fell to a grateful Parkin who fired home.
