Brackley Town

CLUB HISTORY The first records of Brackley Town Football Club can be traced back to 1890 and around the turn of the century they were a prominent side in the South Northants /North Oxfordshire area. Most of the time before the war was spent in the Oxfordshire League, their games being played in Manor Road, before they transferred to the North Bucks League in the post war years. Here they stayed until 1968 when they took what appeared to be a step down the ladder by joining the Banbury & District League. During this time they had moved their ground to the Buckingham Road. In 1974 they moved back to the North Bucks League and this coincided with a move to their current St James Park ground in Churchill Way. They stayed in Division One until 1983, winning the KO Cup in their final season. They then made the move into the United

Counties League, winning the Division One title at the first attempt. Promotion into the Premier Division followed and as a result of this the club achieved senior status. After finishing in the bottom half of the league for the first few seasons, they then experienced their most successful season ever in 1988/89 when they achieved runners up position in the league and were beaten finalists in the Northamptonshire Senior Cup. As invariably happens, the side then broke up and there followed several years of real struggle at the foot of the table with the survival of the club in real doubt at times. The 1992 / 93 season ended with them having the worst playing record of any Senior side in the country.

during the 1995/96 campaign. Phil Lines, who was Manager of the successful side in the late eighties, took charge again and a runners-up position was achieved in his first season. 1996/97 saw them go one better and win the Premier Division title and promotion to the Southern League. The nucleus of the title winning side together with some astute signings saw the side finish a respectable 13th in the Midland Division at the first attempt.

Drastic action was obviously necessary and accordingly the club was restructured and became a Limited Company. In 1994 they moved back across the pyramid into the Hellenic League. A move prompted by their geographical location.

A move to the Southern Section was not a success and joint Managers Bob Rayner and Jon Blencowe found it impossible to field a side capable of competing at this level with the finances available to them. With finances at full stretch, the club was forced into voluntary liquidation in February 1999. Mike Bosher and Ray Styles stepped in to buy the assets and ensure that the season was completed.” The “new” club finished bottom of the Southern Section and were therefore demoted back into the Hellenic League.

After a mediocre first season, things improved dramatically

Former player Terry Muckleberg was appointed Manager for the

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

1999/00 season and he was succeeded by the experienced Peter Foley who took over during the 2000/01 season and under his astute guidance the club finished in runners up position. The 2001/02 season proved to be a bit of a damp squib with Foley leaving in mysterious circumstances and the reins were taken until the end of the campaign by Coach Matty Haycocks who then left to take up a similar role at Hook Norton. Tim Fowler, the ex Middle Barton Manager was appointed during the close season and he guided the team to a top half finish in his first season. The 2003/04 season saw the return of Phil Lines as Director of football to work alongside Tim. After an indifferent start the team worked their way up the table and in an exciting run in, lifted the championship shield on the last day of the season and with it, promotion back to the Southern League. Mike Ford took over as Team Manager in October 2004, guiding the team to the fringes of the play off positions. Ford departed in February 2006 with the club again just outside the promotion frame. Phil Lines and his Assistant Andy Sinnott took over and guided the club to a third place finish culminating in the

heartbreak of losing in the last few minutes of the Play-off Final. The 2006/07 season finally saw the team reach its potential and leading the table from early December the League was won at a canter with a 15 point cushion. Lines then stepped aside and the club appointed the experienced Roger Ashby as they took the step into unknown territory. The club’s first season in the southern League Premier division (Step 3) brought a creditable eighth place finish. Oldfield with top flight experience as a player and for Brackley in the 2006-7 season, scoring in the play-off final, moved on to a coaching role at Peterborough United and Phil Lines again took the reins for the start of a second Premier Division campaign. An eleventh placed finish in 2008-9 consolidated Premier Division status and the club’s growing ambitions brought a new all-seater stand behind one goal to match the newly constructed covered terrace at the cricket ground end. However, 2008-9 will be best remembered for sparkling cup runs and historic appearances in the first round proper of both the FA Cup and FA Trophy.

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

The 2009 / 10 season saw the side in the top 3 for nearly the whole campaign and an eventual 5th place finish and defeat in the end of season Play-off semi-final. 2010 / 11 started with high hopes but a combination of injuries and inconsistency contributed to an eventual 9th place position. The 2011 / 12 season saw the most successful season in the club’s history culminating in winning the Southern League Premier Division Championship and further success in the County Senior Cup. The first season in the Football Conference saw the side make it all the way to the Play-Off Final where they lost by a single goal to FC Halifax. The 2013/14 campaign saw the side consistently in the top five before falling off the pace in the last few months. The 2014/15 season ended with the club avoiding relegation by winning their last game of the campaign. After a slow start to the current campaign, Jon Brady resigned his position with Frank Sinclair acting as interim Manager. Kevin Wilkin who was with Wrexham last season has now been appointed to lead the side.

MATCH REPORT 2 4

BRACKLEY TOWN Whittall (31), Moyo (79)

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Bateson (22, 28), Kendall (50, 67)

September 15, 2015 | National League North | St James’ Park | Att: 238 This win extended Ferriby’s unbeaten run to seven games and ended a sequence of five draws. The villagers were the better side throughout the game and were worthy winners.

It took 20 minutes for the game to really get going and it was Ferriby who threatened first when it did. Russ Fry’s free-kick was headed by Tom Denton straight to home keeper Dan Crane. This was immediately followed by Crane blocking Liam King’s low shot after some good approach work by Kendall. The spell of pressure finally paid off in the 22nd minute. Denton’s shot was blocked and the ball fell to Curtis Bateson who fired home a powerful shot. Ferriby were on top and Danny Clarke and Denton both went close before Bateson scored his, and Ferriby’s second goal. Mark Gray’s accurate 40-yard cross-field ball found Bateson on the left touchline. The winger cut inside then blasted the ball past Crane. Ferriby looked in control and it was a surprise when Brackley pulled a goal back after 31 minutes. Stephan Morley’s free-kick from the left was met unchallenged at the near post by Sam Whittall and he duly headed home.

The half ended controversially. Whittall pushed King in the back in the penalty area as King was about to shoot. Following discussion with the assistant referee, Whittall was shown the red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. King steppedup to take the penalty but his shot struck the bar and bounced out. Ferriby opened the half strongly and Crane fingertipped a Bateson shot round the post. If Ferriby had any nerves, they were settled after 50 minutes. Kendall was the first to react after Bateson’s shot hit the underside of the bar. Like all good strikers, Kendall put the ball in the net from close-range rather than wait for the referee’s decision as to whether or not Bateson had scored. The clinching goal came on 67 minutes. Josh Wilde’s cross was neatly headed by Denton to Kendall who poked the ball home from close-range. Bateson drew a diving save from Crane before Brackley pulled-back a goal. David Moyo was played-in behind Ferriby’s defence. He rounded Nicklin to slide the ball home. That was Brackley’s last opportunity as Ferriby closed-out the game for a deserved and welcome win.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S

Sam Shepherd pens his regular column and talks about all the latest Ferriby performances including one which he described as “one of the best”... Christmas is now long behind us and January is supposed to be a depressing month however that isn’t the case if you’re a North Ferriby United fan! 2016 has started perfectly and things are hotting up at the summit of the National League North. Ferriby kick started the New Year by getting revenge on our nearest and dearest Gainsborough. Ferriby played them off the park in a 4-0 demolition but that didn’t tell half the story. Former villager Nathan Jarman received his marching orders for a two footed lunge on Ben Middleton and just a minute later Steve Brogan joined Jarman in the dressing room after he hit Danny Emerton with what can only be described as a forearm smash. Frustration certainly got the better of the visitors and Ferriby cruised to victory against 9 men with goals from Emerton,

Palmer, Bateson and Clarke. Danny Clarke’s goal was a brilliantly worked, Josh Wilde released Bateson down the wing and he hit a perfect first time cross to Clarke who met it with a bullet header that almost took the net off. Beating Gainsborough was good but things were only going to get better for Ferriby. A week later they travelled to table toppers Solihull Moors with a point to prove. Solihull sat four points ahead of the Villagers with a game in hand so anything less than a win would have seen our title chances fade drastically. I can honestly say this was one of the best Ferriby performances I have ever seen. Ferriby played Solihull off the park in their own back yard and won 3-1. From the first minute Ferriby totally dominated and made that count early when Tom Denton grabbed North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

a brace. A Ferriby mistake allowed Solihull to score but Ferriby were never really troubled and Curtis Bateson scored a fine individual goal to secure the vital victory. This was a massive confidence boost for Ferriby and I can’t see any reason why we can’t challenge for the title after performances like that. With last week’s game at Hednesford postponed Solihull took advantage by beating Stalybridge to extend their lead to 4 points having played the same amount of games as Ferriby. That means today’s game against strugglers Brackley is vital because we need to keep winning, especially at home, to pressurise the teams around us in the increasingly tight and tense top 6. Enjoy the game, Sam
