THE MANAGER
TERRY
SPILLANE
I’d like to welcome you all to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome Waltham Abbey to our home ground. Good afternoon everyone as we welcome Waltham Abbey to the SCT for today’s game. Last Saturday saw us win 3-0 against an in-form Soham whose manager had just received the Ryman “Manager of the Month” award. I’m not one to talk about curses but... Anyway, the last time we played each other was still fresh in our minds as we’d let a two goal lead slip in the last five minutes to draw 2-2. Since then they (Soham) had gone on a great winning streak so it was a good time to tell the players that fact as its something we need to mirror if we are to sneak into a Play-off spot. We went into the game with all 04
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
four of our recognised centrebacks unavailable through injury or suspension, so it really was a case of putting square pegs in round holes. That said, on the plus side of that we were able to involve some more of our impressive under-21 boys in the squad & give them a little bit of experience to help with their development and I can tell you that none of them looked out of place whilst training etc with us this week. We went with the experienced duo of Butts & Vinesy & to be fair after a shaky first 10 mins they found their feet and they looked liked they’d played there for years. The whole team performance was good & we deserved the victory.
Next up was Tilbury at home on Monday night, who are in a very similar position to us as far as the Play-offs are concerned so it was paramount we got the win. Again we had to utilise Butts & Vinesy at centre-back as the 4 “regulars” were still unavailable. We knew it would be a tough game and our players were well aware and well prepared for that. We started the game with a high tempo & I thought our first-half performance was excellent. Our passing was crisp and precise and our work rate was fantastic. We went 1-0 up on the 30 minute mark when Butts scored from the penalty spot after the ever impressive Theo was dragged down in
THE MANAGER
the box. We had a few other opportunities to increase our lead but were unable to take advantage. Tilbury had a few chances themselves but our defenders were not in the mood to give away too much and Walks in goal was as ever Mr Reliable as the last line of defence. We spoke about concentration levels at half -time and the need to take advantage of the chances we were creating as we felt the longer the game stayed at 1-0 the more Tilbury would grow in stature. We looked solid at the back and powerful going forward with Tyrus, Harrison and Theo giving their defence
a torrid time. We had to wait until the 55th min to increase our lead. Tyrus cleverly putting Theo through on goal and after his initial shot hit the keeper, he calmly stroked the ball into the far corner of the goal to put us 2-0 up. Tilbury though are not a team that gives up and they forced a goal on the 65 min mark to give themselves a chance to get back in it. There were chances for both teams to score in the last 25 mins but our defence and in particular Walks was in no mood to let our lead slip away.
As always I’d like to mention the supporters who in our last 2 home games have helped us over the line. Its great to see and hear the boys getting encouraged by you all and it DEFINITELY does make a difference. Just like to finish by saying well done to all those who participated in our very own Sport Relief Mile at lunchtime. Its great that we as a club are able to raise money for such a great cause. Come on you Mead!
We saw the game out and got the points we deserved on the night.

THE BOARDROOM
PAUL
BOWDENBROWN
May I welcome the players, officials, players and supporters of Waltham Abbey after your trip round the M25 to our SCT home this Saturday afternoon, and I hope that after an enjoyable game and refreshments you all have a safe journey home. Firstly an apology from me as at the time of writing I probably wont be with you this afternoon as after having another hospital stay this past week probably wont be travelling to the SCT this weekend - I don’t actually know where I will be come 3:00pm on Saturday afternoon! Its been a good week for the club on the playing field as after winning two very enjoyable home games in three days which made it three wins in a row, the optimistic amongst us could really think that our team are back in

the Play-Off hunt. Seven points to make up in our final nine games does sound a lot, but as someone once said, “Football is a funny old game!” Its been a little over a month now since I announced that we would continue our £30.00 Family Season Ticket into 2016/2017, and I’d like to thank our current holders for their support and backing for the scheme. I’m glad to say that our plan to get the application forms out and ready for Good Friday is on track and I hope and thank you for the continued high levels of great support of our club.
Finally from me today, I’d just like to pass on my congratulations to all those who joined Greenie on our very own Sport Relief Mile this lunchtime - personally I still wont believe Mike’s done the mile until I see the proof, but it is for charity I suppose! Seriously, best of luck to everyone involved for raising money for such a great charity. Hoping that I can enjoy the game with you this afternoon, Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman & Managing Director

Mead into the break in full control of the game.
Two goals in a crazy couple of minutes in the closing stages of the first half saw the Mead ease back into second place in the table.
Further second-half goals followed with Jeffery completing a brace and Kye Jude and Terry Spillane (the young one!) completing the rout.
Continuous Mead pressure throughout the first-half was rewarded in the penultimate minute of the half when the excellent Samuel Orisatoki pulled the ball back for Philippe Blaettler to convert from 14 yards.
Special mention for “young” Spillane who not only was making his debut in a Mead shirt but it was his first competitive appearance for three years and he contributed an assist as well as his goal.
The visitors were then reduced to ten men after young George Jeffery was brought down on the edge of the penalty area. The young Mead striker picked himself up to convert from the resulting free-kick and send 10

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Good afternoon everyone and welcome once again to the SCT for our third Ryman League Home fixture in a row.
but goals from Richard Butler and Theo saw us chalk up an impressive home win and three valuable points.
Last Saturday’s 3-0 win against Soham Town Rangers was far from as easy as the scoreline would suggest, despite being reduced to 10 men Soham put up a spirited display and it was not until the final five minutes when we scored our second and third goals were we able to claim the points.
I thought we played well, Tyrus was back to his old self terrorising defenders and Paul Vines put in a good shift at centre-half.
Monday saw us entertain Tilbury, who like us, were knocking on the door of the Play-offs, it was as expected a tight physical game,
Today’s game will be another tough one, Waltham have spent most of the season near the bottom of the table but have started to turn the corner with some steady performances lately. Terry will have the team up for this match before we set off on our travels next week to Bury Town.
On the player front Derek Duncan has joined VCD, Del has been a good servant to the club and we wish him well. Alberto Pinto has joined us from Great Wakering Rovers, Pinto plays centre midfield and impressed against us recently in a 3-2 win we picked up a there a couple of weeks ago. Welcome Pinto. Enjoy the match. Dave Joy Club Secretary

Defeats against Cray Wanderers, Phoenix Sports and Maldon & Tiptree mean their game against the Mead is an important fixture for them. Add to the fact they play AFC Hornchurch, AFC Sudbury and Harlow Town the fixture list hasn’t been kind to them. Thamesmead have hit form of late and are currently on a three game winning run and have given themselves hope of the Play-off finish but they mustn’t get complacent against their opponents.
THE OPPOSITION
CLUB HISTORY
Waltham Abbey Youth Club, based in Waltham Abbey, Essex, first played football at “Capershotts” during the Second World War and in later years the club became known as firstly Waltham Abbey, then Abbey Sports. Both clubs gained numerous honours in the Northern Suburban League.
The club was founded in 1944 with a mix of players from Waltham Abbey Youth Club and former juniors from Tottenham Hotspur under the leadership of the trainer and manager Wally Hickman. The secretary was Mo (Maurice) Ward and the President was Capt. Larkin. In their early years they played to a high standard and reached the final of the Herts Junior Cup in three years out of four but lost on each occasion – including a loss to Redbourn Rovers of 4–5 after they had been leading 4–1. Some of the leading players in the early years included left winger Dave Cook who was killed in a road crash, centre-half Robbo Robinson and inside forward Frank Blower. Frank later became a dedicated treasurer of the club with Ray Buck as a similarly dedicated club secretary. Waltham Abbey United emerged in the late sixties and a new clubhouse was built. In 1974 the club amalgamated with the successful Beechfield Sports and joined the Metropolitan League, which later became the London Spartan League. In 1976 the club won the Essex Junior Cup and later that summer dropped the Beechfield Sports tag on the advice of The FA. Two years
later the club reached the final of the Essex Intermediate Cup and won the league’s Division One title, and, having gained Senior Status, were promoted. In their first season they won the title without losing a game and were again promoted this time to the Premier Division where they remained until season 2000–01. Season 2001–02 was spent in the Essex & Herts Border Combination to allow them to move across the pyramid. They were elected to the Essex Senior League for season 2002–03. In 2004–05, in addition to winning both the League Cup and the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy they finished in their highest position of 3rd. In 1990–91 the club were inaugural finalists in the Roy Bailey Memorial Trophy, a competition for local teams including Cheshunt, Ware, and Hertford Town. It was won for the first time in 1994–95 when they beat Hoddesdon Town. In both 1996–97 and 2005 (in the final held over from the previous season) they beat St Margaretsbury.
In 1998–99 they won the London Senior Cup with a fine 3–2 win over Bedfont at Dulwich Hamlet’s ground, and they also secured the Spartan South Midlands Challenge Trophy. Recent seasons have seen a lot of changes on and off the pitch with floodlights being installed in 1990 and the ground levelled. A great amount of work has been done around the clubhouse and a 200-seater stand built. A number of seats were purchased from Manchester City´s old Maine Road and these were installed during the summer of 2005 as the club strived to improve facilities on and off the field. On 2 May 2009, the Abbott’s capped off a successful 2008–09 season by beating Concord Rangers 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw to win the Isthmian League Division 1 North Play-off’s. They played in the Isthmian League Premier Division for the first time in their history in 2009–10. However, despite winning the last two games of their season, they finished 21st and were relegated back to Isthmian League Division 1 North for the 2010–11 season.

Saturday 5th March 2016 | Ryman League Division One North | Sporting Club Thamesmead | Att: 94
The Mead just about stayed in Play Off contention with a hard fought win, despite having no recognised central defenders available. With messers Barry, Gorbell and Hallam suspended and Matt Toms injured, Terry partnered Richard Butler and Paul Vines in the heart of defense. But why did we worry as Butts just pipped Vinesy to the Man of the March award as the pair both returned outstanding displays! The visitors had the first chance when Sharman was denied by the Andy Walker’s legs before Theo
Fairweather-Johnson headed the home side ahead from Tommy Spillane’s free kick. Theo found space well to bullet Chino’s flighted ball beyond the keeper and into the net. Will Lawton should have levelled for Soham on the stroke of half-time but missed his kick with the goal at his mercy. It got worse for the visitors early in the second half as Soham were reduced to ten men early in the second-half when Ross Paterson was shown a straight red card.
to double the lead before Simon Swinton battled through to take advantage of defensive hesitation only to hit the side netting. Salim Reliani forced Walks into a fine save before the home side sealed the win with two goals in the last three minutes through Harrison Carnegie – who sprinted into space behind the defense before drilling home into the bottom corner, before Theo coolly netted again for his 13th goal of the season. The Mead: Walker, Glasgow, Spillane, Prescott, Butler, Vines, Carnegie, Dauti, Gordon-Young, FairweatherJohnson, Porter.

TILBURY Carlile (62)
Monday 7th March 2016 | Ryman League Division One North | Sporting Club Thamesmead | Att: 121
The Mead’s pursuit of the Play Off places continued with a battling win against Tilbury, as Terry’s side moved within seven points of the top five with nine games left!
was brought down on the edge of the box, and up stepped Richard Butler and coolly rolled home his 12th goal of the season, as keeper Clark Bogard dived to his right. Theo was then unlucky himself as his shot on the turn sailed just over the bar.
Tilbury will be disappointed that they didn’t open the scoring early on when following a defensive mistake Dwade James sprinted clear before being denied by a very brave block from Andy Walker.
The Mead striker wasn’t to be denied however seven minutes after the break as following a delightful through ball from Tyrus (almost “Bergkampesque”) Gordon-Young, Theo duly netted his 14th goal of the season, netting after his first effort was blocked by the keeper, and following up, the Mead striker netted his fourteenth goal of the season.
In a tight opening half, Tyrus GordonYoung then had a chance as he raced onto a through ball, managed to hold off a challenge before lifting the ball over the keeper only to see the ball bounce wide of the left post. The deadlock was broken on the half hour when Theo Fairweather-Johnson
The visitors responded well and pulled a goal back as Jack Carlile slid in to reduce the arrears. Tilbury then introduced Tony Martin for Jimmy Cook and with his first touch, the
substitute brought a world class save out of Walks as the Mead no. 1 tipped Martin’s stinging drive onto the bar. And if the Dockers knew it wasn’t to be their night, it came from the resulting corner as the home goal bore a charmed life, as first Emiel Aiken struck a post only for Martin to clip the bar for a second time in a few short minutes with the rebound. The home goal then had a second amazing let off when Aiken’s driven cross was saved by Walks, who diverted the away from Martin, only for sub Andy Edmunds to drive the ball back across the face of goal in the opposite direction. Three more points for the Mead and that Play Off dream is still alive especially if they complete three wins out of three at home in their next match against Waltham Abbey.

WELCOME TO THE “NEW” BOYS Over the past few weeks, Terry has blooded a couple of youngsters into the first team with both KYE JUDE and HARRY PRINCE making their first team debuts. Kye started the away game at Great Wakering Rovers, whilst Harry was a second-half sub. Meanwhile in the last week, Terry has signed ADALBERTO PINTO from Great Wakering. Terry told us, “He’s an experienced midfielder even though he’s still in his twenties. He’s a great character who has leadership qualities who pops up with the odd goal too. We signed him from GWR but he’s also played for Heybridge, Maldon and in Ireland for Shelbourne.”

TRAVELLER’S TALES
TRAVELLER’S TALES
The travels of a Thamesmead Town away supporter...
Each away trip seems to have its own unique story, and the trip to Great Wakering Rovers was certainly no exception. A text message from Gary Ryan on Friday afternoon led to me agreeing to escort England Under-18 starlet Sam Orisatoki to the game, in anticipation of him making his Mead debut in a MUST win game for the boys. So it meant leaving Thamesmead at 11.45am with the Sat Nav telling me this would ensure our arrival at 1pm (traffic and tunnel permitting). With the players’ meet time at GWR being 1.30, and Sam being one of our younger boys, I didn’t want to risk incurring the wrath and “that stare” from “the Boss”, along with the potential of being the first “supporter” to receive a fine for late arrival at a game!! And so we arrived bang on schedule at 1pm and entered a freezing club
26
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
house to find a small number of our team already there. As if our meeting place wasn’t cold enough, we were disappointed to find that GWR didn’t have a BT Sport subscription, so were unable to watch the lunchtime Premier League encounter while waiting for the rest of the squad to assemble. So, as the players headed for the relative warmth of the dressing room and the opportunity to “warm up” pre-match, it was a case of “what to do” as the clock ticked slowly round to kick-off time. What ensued on the pitch, particularly during an action packed first half hour, was certainly worth waiting for as the Mead went about getting back in touch with the Play-off pack. And so to the half-time whistle and a welcome cup of Bovril, courtesy of Messrs Gorbell and Porter senior. Although the second-half didn’t live up to the excitement of that first half
hour, the boys deservedly held out for a win. Disappointingly, Sam didn’t get onto the pitch as Terry ensured everything was kept tight to ensure victory, but at least he was able to savour the hearty post match cuisine of pies and mash (albeit with GRAVY!!) before embarking on our return journey. Sam told me that he often sleeps on a journey, but I’m sure you won’t be surprised to learn that this was one pleasure I denied him as we recounted the afternoon’s events. Sam’s next match was an Under-18 international victory for England in Northern Ireland, but I’m sure that pales into insignificance when he recollects his day as a “Thamesmead Traveller”. Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the SCT! As you may have noticed by now, today is to our Sport Relief Day - a week before the event proper begins with a TV special on Friday night. By the time you read this a group of us (yes including me) will have done our very own Sport Relief Mile from the Sainsburys store in Abbey Wood to the ground. I’d like to put on record my thanks to Steve at the store for all his help and support in staging the Mile, and for seeing us off... During the afternoon we’ll be selling the exclusive RYMAN Sport Relief pens for just ONE POUND and when you came in you’ll have been asked for any loose change that you may have in our collecting bucket. Next season’s Season Tickets will officially go on sale at our next home game on Good Friday when we welcome Barkingside to the SCT. In the week where the Premier League have agreed to offer away fans tickets for £30.00 (some clubs even less) we’re offering you the whole season of Mead home games for the same £30.00 - and
we’ll even make it a Family Ticket, so that you can bring the whole family to the SCT for season 2016/2017... Take care everyone - to our friends from Waltham Abbey a safe return home, and to all Mead fans don’t forget we’re at home next on Good Friday afternoon when we welcome Barkingside, and don’t forget the earlier than normal kick off at 2:00pm.
If your company would like to sponsor a forthcoming home game, please see Greenie TODAY or contact him on commercialttfc@live.co.uk or alternatively 07845 751319
Remember you can get in touch with the Commercial team on email at commercialttfc@live.co.uk Cheers Greenie

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE
CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE
11
CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34
