THE MANAGER
CHRIS BOLDER
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Boston United to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon. The performance against Alfreton had some really positive aspects and some aspects that we must eliminate from our game if we are to turn results around. We started the game very well and had a couple of early chances, then from their first corner we allowed a free header in our box resulting in the first goal. The importance of how you perform in both boxes clearly highlighted. We then made a number of poor decisions leading to further goals and going down to 10 men, which meant it was always going to be a challenge getting something from the game. The lads they showed a positive response in the second half and managed to create a number of chances as well as keeping a clean sheet. We have had a couple more players move on for various reasons and, therefore, we are continuing to look for additions to the squad. We had a practice game last weekend which allowed me to view a number of trialists, as well as more training sessions. As I write these notes we have a number of potential signings, but nothing has been finalised as of yet. Obviously we have Bobby unavailable today due to him serving his one-match suspension and we have a couple of lads recovering from
injury and illness, but they have trained well this week, so should be no issues. Boston have been on a very good run of form since the new manager has come in, he has brought in several players to boost his squad and they are now unbeaten in their last six outings, winning five of these. This just goes to show that a positive run of results is possible in this league, as prior to this, Boston found themselves towards the foot of the table. They have some familiar faces in their ranks, both players that have played for North Ferriby and players I have played with. They have added some good defenders and are a threat going forward, with Reece Thompson and Ashley Hemmings, so it will be good challenge for us today. Thank you to the fans for their continued support, everybody associated with the club are trying desperately hard to turn the clubs results around and hopefully once we get that first positive result it will improve all round confidence. THE DEFENDER
BEN CLAPPISON Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Boston United n in the National League North. The club is obviously going through a transitional period at the moment with a lot on ins and outs over a short period of time. However the squad is starting to take shape now and we are becoming closer as a group. We are all still in the process of learning each other’s game and how different people do different things, but things are definitely improving and everyone is giving 100 per cent to make sure we give ourselves the best opportunity to turn our fortunes around. I think what’s lacking at the moment is a self confidence within the group. We are all desperate to do well, but sometimes when you are in a poor run of form, you lose the rub of the green and mentally that can affect teams. But that’s down to us, as players, who want to be here and do well for the club. The gaffer is demanding 100 per cent from everyone and that’s what we need if we are going to put a run together. First and foremost I want to help the club get out of the current situation we find ourselves in. I came here from not playing as much football as I would have liked during my time at York, so to get an opportunity to play week in week out was also a factor in my decision to join the club. It’s now down to me, personally, to make sure I keep my place in the team and kick on from here. I can feel my match fitness improving with every passing game and, hopefully, through doing well individually that will help to get some points on the board. The gaffer is raising the standards at training and everyone is buying into it, we have to now take that out onto the pitch on a Sunday. Ben Clappison Defender 4

BOSTON UNITED
Boston United make the trip to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, with more than one familiar face in their ranks. Reece Thompson, Ben Middleton, Taron Hare and Stephen Brogan have all played for North Ferriby United recently and will be keen to give their former employers a reminder of their talents. In the league Boston sit mid table in 12th place on 32 points from their 25 fixtures and have been on a superb run of form lately. The club are enjoying a six game unbeaten run, beating York City, Southport, Alfreton Town, Gainsborough
Trinity and Tamworth in recent weeks. What’s more, Ashley Hemmings in bang in-form for the club. The striker moved to double figures for the season with two more goals in their win over Tamworth. Hemmings struck from open play in the 52nd minute and from the penalty spot 10 minutes later to seal United’s fourth consecutive home win, following Reece Thompson’s opener midway through the first half. Bradley Reid reduced the arrears with 16 minutes to play, but United held firm to make it 16 points from a possible 18. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

BOSTON UNITED
RECENT HISTORY The 2007-2008 season saw the Pilgrims finish 10th in Blue Square North, under the guidance of new manager Tommy Taylor. Paul Ellender, Stewart Talbot and David Galbraith were the only players to figure from the previous season’s squad and Taylor guided his new-look side to a top half finish against all the odds, as Boston United finally started to show signs of recovery following a dark spell in the club’s history. However, the Pilgrims were hit with another demotion in June 2008, when the club were removed from The Football Conference and placed in the UniBond Premier League — the third tier of non-league football. United struggled to adapt and escaped relegation on the final day of the season by virtue of a 1-0 victory over Cammell Laird. Taylor and Steve Welsh had shared the managerial duties during the campaign, but the club appointed new joint first team managers ahead of the 2009-2010 season in the guise of Rob Scott and Paul Hurst, who had guided Ilkeston Town to promotion via the play-offs just weeks earlier. The club’s York Street ground was renamed “The Jakemans Stadium” in the summer of 2009 following a major sponsorship deal with Sutterton-based Jakemans Confectioners. Scott and Hurst repeated their earlier promotion feat with Ilkeston by guiding Boston to promotion via the play-offs on May 1, 2010. The Pilgrims’ 2-1 extra-time victory at Bradford Park Avenue added to the Lincolnshire Senior Shield and UniBond League Challenge Cup already collected during the season. The 2010-2011 season in Blue Square Bet North was another memorable one, with a third place finish secured and another tilt at the play-offs. United trailed 1-0 to Guiseley after the first leg but won the second leg 3-2 after extra-time, only to be beaten on penalties. United’s surge into the play-offs was not hindered despite the ill-timed departure of Scott and Hurst to Grimsby Town in
March 2011. Jason Lee and Lee Canoville assumed control and guided the Pilgrims safely into the top five and were handed the joint managerial duties on a permanent basis ahead of the 2011-2012 campaign. The Pilgrims took time to adjust following the loss of several key players during the summer months but a strong run post-Christmas run took United to the brink of the play-off positions, although a poor run towards the closing weeks of the season ensured an eventual 11th placed finish. Canoville departed ahead of 2012-2013, with Lee left to plot a sole route to success for the Pilgrims in a fiercely-competitive Blue Square Bet North division. Lee himself departed in December 2012 following a poor run and his replacement Graham Drury, the former Stamford AFC manager, lasted an even shorter period of time. He was in charge until March 2013, encompassing 79 days, and was sacked following a run of two wins from 13 matches. Dennis Greene arrived and a three-match winning run alleviated any growing relegation fears although the Pilgrims finished in 16th place. Greene was handed the managerial duties permanently ahead of the 2013-2014 season and responded by guiding the Pilgrims to a sixth place finish, only losing out on the play-offs on the final day of the campaign. United recorded 15 home victories out of 21, which was their best home record since 2000. Greene was subsequently awarded a new two-year contract — tying him to the club until the end of the 2015-2016 season. The 2014-2015 campaign was another of great excitement at The Jakemans Stadium, with the Pilgrims clinching a play-off place following more excellent home form, which included an unbeaten home run stretching from November until the end of the season. United were only denied a playoff final appearance by a sensational stoppage time leveller from Chorley’s Adam Roscoe — and subsequent penalty shootout elimination. ASHLEY HEMMINGS
Ben Middleton joined the Pilgrims on an initial month’s loan from Harrogate Town in December 2017. Capable of playing at right-back or centre-half, emerged from Doncaster’s youth set-up to make numerous appearances for North Ferriby and Scarborough before a move to Harrogate Town in 2017.

In-demand Ashley Hemmings linked up with the Pilgrims at the end of June 2017 following his departure from Mansfield. The pacy winger had appeared under Adam Murray’s management during his time in charge at Field Mill. Hemmings had earlier played for the likes of Walsall and Dagenham and Redbridge.
JAMIE MCGUIRE

Jamie McGuire linked up with Boston United in the summer of 2017 after leaving Mansfield. Having progressed through the divisions with Fleetwood during their meteoric rise, McGuire subsequently went on to play over 100 times for the Stags, where he played alongside and was managed by United boss Adam Murray.
Pacy attacker Jay Rollins joined Boston United in July 2015 after agreeing an initial oneyear contract at The Jakemans Stadium, with a further oneyear option. The former Askern Villa and Armthorpe Welfare winger impressed during preseason outings for the Pilgrims to become Dennis Greene’s first outright signing of the summer.
Reece Thompson joined the Pilgrims on a short-term loan deal from Guiseley in November 2017. He had top scored for North Ferriby during their National League term bagging 12 goals. The move was extended into a long-term loan in January 2018 to keep him at The Jakemans Stadium until the end of the season. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Saturday 6 January 2018 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | National League North | Att: 297 This was a vital win for Alfreton as both teams were in the relegation zone at the start of play. The result leaves The Villagers in even deeper trouble at the bottom of the table. Ferriby actually started the game brightly with Carl Stewart hitting the bar in the 2nd minute. For the first 10 minutes pressed Alfreton back and things were looking promising. However, Alfreton gradually began to take control after 10 minutes. Chris Sharp placed a tame header in to Ross Durrant’s hands, before marauding full-back Tom Allan forced Ross Durrant in to a low save. The game really turned when Alfreton scored twice in three minutes. The first, after 17 minutes, saw Dave Shiels score with a free header in the six-yard box from a Brendan Daniels corner. It was a case of déjà-vu for Ferriby, as this has happened so often this season. Three minutes later a Ferriby set-piece broke down and Alfreton broke quickly. Bradley Wood fed Chris Sharp on the right and the striker drove on to fire an angled shot past keeper Durrant. In between those goals Bobby Johnson drew a save from Town keeper Chris Elliott. To The Villagers’ credit, they attempted to play football and there was some good passing football and some threats to the Alfreton goal. Jordon Cooke hit a powerful shot at Elliott. Jamie Forrester shot wide and Jerome Slew saw an on-target shot deflected for a corner. It got worse for Ferriby after 31 minutes when Johnson was dismissed for denying Guan Mulhearn a goal-scoring opportunity. Alfreton’s third goal in added time saw Pierce Bird head home relatively unchallenged in the 12
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme
goal area. With Alfreton three goals to the good and a man extra, it is perhaps no surprise that the second-half lacked a lot of real excitement. Alfreton had most of the possession with Wood, Mulhearn, Sharp and Daniels a constant threat. Even so, they did not trouble Durrant too often. A number of good chances were missed. Wood hit a shot at Durrant and Jorome Slew responded with another on-target shot was blocked. Daniels had a goal disallowed for a foul as Town continued to press and Wood wasted a great chance. Luke Lofts, a half-time substitute for Carl Stewart, gave some impetus to The Villagers’ midfield but it was always going to be difficult to break Alfreton down with only ten men. Ferriby did keep trying to play football but could make little headway in midfield and Chris Elliott in the Alfreton goal was rarely troubled. Manager Chris Bolder was visibly disappointed after the game, “I’m very disappointed with the result. After the performance at York I was optimistic of getting something. We almost took the lead early on, but then conceded in their first attack. We can’t concede two goals in six-yard box at this level. We have got to defend better and markers have to beware of their opponents. We had almost the same number of free-kicks and corners as them but we got no free headers at set pieces; they did. They did not real cut us apart at any time in the game. People are given roles and responsibilities and they have to make the right decisions. We need everyone to give the maximum.”
