THE MEAD 20

ISSUE 20 Welcome

Good evening everyone on what we’re told and forecast will be another cold one as we welcome who have made the trip over from Guerney on this Wednesday evening. And we would really like to thank everyone braved the freezing conditions on Saturday as boy those of you who were here as the Mead drew with Corinthian Casuals will testify just how cold it was. The weather was a big factor for our visitors tonight on Saturday too as they had was proved to be a wasted trip to Sittingbourne only for the game to be frozen off fifteen minutes before kick-off. Instead, some of their party finished up freezing with us here at Princes.

Talking of reading, in today’s edition of THE MEAD, we’ve the action from Wednesday’s derby with Faversham; we’ve all the latest club on the Mead Matters page. Our latest run of home games – remember this is number three of six in month of December – continues here next TUESDAY at7:45pm – and not Wednesday – when Corinthians return for our last sixteen Velocity Trophy tie – see you then if we’ve thawed out in time of course! Cheers. Greenie

ALEX O’BRIEN

THE MANAGEMENT Good evening everyone and to everyone connected with Guernsey, welcome to Princes Park for another game under the lights! Saturday was a lot better – to get a point against a side battling for the title is a good point! It just shows the frustration really for me, and Tom and Craig, that the players have to believe in their ability, they have to believe that they can do that to teams in and around them – to teams at the top as well as teams at the bottom. It’s frustrating when you see the last couple of performances and then you watch us on Saturday – it’s like watching a Jekyll and Hyde side – that’s the most frustrating part for us as we know these players as they’re much better than actually the league table suggests. It’s been no secret that Tom signed Donovan a while back, but sadly he had some personal issues that he had to sort out and move forward.

But now that that’s been done hopefully that means everything’s out of the way for him so that he can concentrate on getting fit and getting back to the levels that he’s used to. Charlie Taylor is another one – a good footballer and so it’s up to myself and Tom to get the best out of them. But on paper what fantastic additions to our squad – so welcome both! I understand that we had a few unexpected watchers on Saturday as a few of the Guernsey boys watched after their game was called off at Sittingbourne fifteen minutes before kick-off. You have to feel for them – coming all that way and then to prepare themselves for a game only to literally find a group of hot kettles pouring steaming water – I’m led to believe – which were trying to defrost the goal mouth!

They came to watch us which was a bonus for them, but as Tom and I have both said many times this season, and something that I know in non-league football is that you can go and watch a team five times and the day that you go and play them they’ll make six changes and they’ll have two injured and one suspended - its never as clean as it should be. After Saturday one last thing to everyone – KEEP WARM! Seriously it was a cold one at the weekend, wrap up tonight and hopefully we’ll warm you up with the three points. And as these are my last notes, before the 25th, may I wish you all a very Merry Christmas! Cheers Alex O’Brien First-Team Assistant Manager

LEON SMITH THE CAPTAIN

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Guernsey in the Bostik League South. Good evening everyone. Saturday was a welldeserved point from a match which we could have easily won. What was pleasing was that we played for the full 90 minutes and didn’t tail off towards the end which we have done on a couple of occasions recently.

It really was good midfield play from Tom and Solomon and a good all-round team effort. We were disappointed not to have held out for the three points and conceded a late equaliser, but all in all Proud Supplier of Kent FA’s Print & Design

it was a much better performance against the side we must remember are second in the league. The late red card for Jake I thought looked harsh considering he clearly slipped, before fouling the player and we will miss him during his ban as we need to continue to build on Saturday’s performance going forward into the countdown to the Festive Season. Enjoy the game and keep warm! Thanks as always for your support. Leon Smith First-Team Captain

Honours even on a bitterly cold Saturday at Princes Park. For the Mead, this was a much-better performance from the midweek derby defeat to Faversham Town, as the home side came agonisingly close to their first win in six league games. Casuals arrived at Princes second in the table and looking to cut Lewes lead at the top from four points. In the end, they were fortunate to come from behind with a very fortuitous equaliser in the final 10 minutes. With Tom O’Connor behind most of the home sides’ good things, it took until the 70th minute for the Mead to edge in front as Danny Parish arrived late at the far post to score his seventh goal for the club in just his eleventh game. Sadly for the Mead, the recent poor fortune in front of our own net surfaced again as substitute DelgardoWWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG

Hibbert was allowed far too much time to literally roll the ball over the line past an exposed Lewis Cary with a little less than 10 minutes left to salvage what was an unlikely point for the visitors. As the temperature dropped, sadly there was little to warm the fans who braved the ever-increasing Arctic conditions in the first half. Tom went close a couple of times and Laurent Mendy shot across the face of goal, before Danny then brilliantly angled a header from Bode Anidugbe’s pin-point cross onto the left post. Casuals almost went ahead when Uzun’s dipping shot beat Lewis only to crash back off of the home wood work – it was ironic because as the Casuals midfielder unleashed his pile-driver his bench was preparing to substitute him! Indeed just a few moments later, Danny was on hand to sweep the home side in front and that was followed by chances for both Tom and

Bode that tested the Casuals keeper. Then with less than 10 minutes to go substitute Delgardo-Hibbert dribbled the ball over the line for the equaliser with possibly his first touch to grab what for long periods had seen an unlikely Casuals point. In stoppage time, Jake McIntyre was unfortunate with a clumsy tackle that saw him receive a straight red card as he slipped going into an attempted challenge – it just summed up the Mead’s afternoon! There were few pluses for the gaffer on such a cold day, but two were the late introductions into Mead colours of Donovan Simmonds and Charlie Taylor. INTRODUCING

Corinthian casuals After two titanic, historic battles in the FA Cup last season, the Green Lions arrive at Princes Park this evening for the very first time as the two sides meet for the very first time in League football. Following the Mead’s Cup penalty shoot-out, the two sides enjoyed mixed seasons and now that we’re both in the same division, the unique bond that the clubs enjoy will live forever in the history books of the greatest cup competition in the world. This season is proving to be PAGE 14

another challenging one for Guernsey and it could be summed up by their trip to Sittingbourne at the weekend that was called off just fifteen minutes prior to kick-off meaning that the Green Lions had a wasted trip leaving them 18th in the table. Three wins from their ten league games away from Footes Lane isn’t a bad return for a side for whom remember away trips are by plane and coach. With boss Tony Vance still holding the reigns one thing is for sure - the Green Lions will always roar and be a tough side to beat!

GUERNSEY

Recent CLUB HISTORY Guernsey Football Club was formed in 2011 to offer the island’s elite footballers the opportunity to progress and test themselves on a regular basis outside of the Channel Islands. We are an independent, community amateur football club which play in the Ryman Isthmian League Division One South at Step Four on English football’s nonleague pyramid system. The club is owned and run for the benefit of the local Guernsey community and it plays its home games at the Footes Lane Stadium. The initial idea to establish Guernsey FC was developed during the 2009-10 season when Guernsey’s Senior County Division One representative side enjoyed a successful run in the FA National League System Cup culminating in Guernsey beating the Liverpool County Premier League 5-2 in the final in May 2010. Over the course of the following few months, the club’s founding directors, Steve Dewsnip and Mark Le Tissier, received encouragement from various sources and the island’s local football community to develop our plans for the new club further and were delighted when the member clubs of the Combined Counties League voted by a significant majority on 20 June 2011 to allow Guernsey FC to join Division One of their league. Saturday 6th August 2011 was a historic day for Guernsey FC and the island in general when the club played its inaugural game at Footes Lane against Knaphill FC in the Combined Counties League Division One.

Saturday 6th August 2011 was a historic day for Guernsey FC and the island in general when the club played its inaugural game at Footes Lane against Knaphill FC in the Combined Counties League Division One. The 2012-13 season was a tough campaign. The league campaign saw countless postponed fixtures due to adverse weather and the cup run. In April, Guernsey FC played a staggering 16 games in 30 days. The May bank holiday weekend saw GFC play four games in four days and remarkably secure all 12 points to finish second in the Combined Counties Premier League and gain promotion to the Ryman Isthmian League Division One South. The club’s first season in the Ryman Isthmian Leagues was a constructive campaign and had plenty of highs. The club finished in a respectable fourth place but lost 3-2 away to Leatherhead in the play-off semi-final. Guernsey’s second season in Ryman South was much tougher. Injuries and unavailability left the Green Lions struggling though October and November and it wasn’t until just before Christmas that results picked up. Any hopes of sneaking into the play-offs late on were dashed with a run of four defeats in five games in March. The Green Lions eventually finished 10th in the league before many of the squad were part of the Guernsey FA gold-medal winning side at the 2015 NatWest Island Games in Jersey. Despite a couple of patches of indifferent form in the first half of the 2015-16 season, the Green Lions found themselves third in the table

in the new year and equalled their Ryman South unbeaten record of nine games. But a mixture of poor performances, injuries and bad luck led to a six-game losing run that saw our play-off challenge fade away. The 2016-17 season was GFC’s most challenging yet as they battled against relegation for the first time in their history. It took until the end of September to secure the first victory of the campaign and bad luck hit Tony Vance’s squad with several lengthy injuries and absences to key players. They didn’t manage to win a home game after Christmas, but finally ended their winless away run when they beat Chipstead in February and, ironically, it was their away results that kept them up as two more wins and a draw were enough to keep them ahead of their rivals. There was change off the field as Mark Le Tissier took over as Chairman, but the main highlight was the FA Cup coming to Guernsey for the first time in August amidst a tremendous fanfare that included the famous trophy being displayed at Footes Lane. Dave Rihoy’s second-half brace in the first ever FA-Cup match to be contested outside the maindland secured a replay, but GFC eventually went out on penalties at Thamesmead Town. More youngsters made an impact as Thomas Dodds went on to become a key player having only made his debut at the start of the campaign at just 17 years of age. He went on to scoop five awards at the end-of-season gala.
