MANAGER’S COLUMN

STEVE

HOUSHAM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Woking to our home this Saturday afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Woking in the National League. Here we are again after our great result last Saturday, which was also our second double of the season against Guiesley.

performance, but we put that to bed and need to continue today against another team in Woking, who are also fighting to stay up, so its going to be another tough challenge for us, but one we as a group are going to fight for everything.

celebrating was fantastic, you are the 12th man and we need you again and we hope come 5pm tonight we can give you something else to cheer about at home.

The injury update is still the same, but some are showing signs of getting there. Their attitude is not down they are sticking with us and are supporting the lads through every moment.

club run by Anthony Wood for their great gesture of sorting accommodation out for our away game at Torquay on the last day of the season. It just shows what a great club we have here. Thank you again and keep believing.

On a final note I and the players would like to thank the supporters

It was a game we entered on the back of four losses and, with teams around us picking up points, the gap to safety was starting to look big, so it was very important we got something out of the game. To make it more pleasing was the way we reacted from going a goal down and when that happens it’s easy for a team down in trouble to crumble, but the lads we have here do not believe in that and the second-half performance. The display showed the spirit we have amongst us, Reece Thompson got us underway with one of the best goals you will see all season and then Jake Skelton, who deserves special praise for his recent rock solid performances, gets a great winner for us. All in all it was a great day and

I want to yet again thank you the fans. To see you behind the goal on Saturday against Guiesley

North Ferriby picked up a morale-boosting victory last weekend and will look to make it back-to-back against Woking this afternoon... With the gap to safety growing in recent weeks, Ferriby picked up a superb 2-1 victory over Guiseley last weekend and will have design on another three-point haul today.

4-3 to high-flying Forest Green Rovers.

Steve Housham saw his side go 1-0 down, before fighting their way back, with goals from Reece Thompson and Jake Skelton.

If last week was a proverbial “sixpointer”, today is another vitally important game.

The victory moved them upto 23 in the table, but after results in midweek didn’t go in their favour the gap to safety stands at seven points. Woking themselves came so close to pulling off a superb victory, but were left to rue a late collapse which saw them lose 4

However on Tuesday Woking picked up a victory at home against Dover.

This afternoon’s opponents Woking sit 19 in the table, having picked up 37 points from their 35 games. They have picked up crucial wins over Torquay United, Eastleigh, and Solihull Moors since the turn of the new year, while also drawing 0-0 with Southport.

CLUB HISTORY

CLUB HISTORY

WOKING

Woking Football Club, known as the Cards, was formed in 1889. The Club joined the West Surrey League in 1895/96, winning the title by one point on the final day of the season. In 1911 the Club joined the Isthmian League, maintaining their place in the top division for 72 years and finishing as runners-up to Wycombe Wanderers in 1956/57. Sadly, the Club then went into decline, culminating in a first-ever relegation in 1982/83. By the end of the 1984/85 season the Club had plunged to Division Two South of the Isthmian League. It was during that season that former player, Geoff Chapple, was appointed as manager. Although he was not able to save the Club from relegation, the renaissance was underway. Just missing out on promotion at the first attempt, the Club clinched the Division Two South title in 1986/87 and, after two third place finishes in Division One, they were promoted back to the Premier Division at the end of the 1989/90 season. Promotion to the Conference was achieved in 1991/92. The Isthmian League title was clinched in early April, with seven games still to be played. The new season kicked off with very few of the all-conquering championship side in the line-up. After a shaky start a very respectable eighth place finish. The FA Trophy was won in 1994, 1995 and 1997 and the Cards also achieved five successive top five finishes in the Conference, including being runners-up in 1994/95 and 1995/96. At the end of the 1996/97 campaign, having just clinched the FA Trophy for the third time, Geoff Chapple and his coach, Colin Lippiatt, left the Club, John McGovern was appointed as manager. Hopes were high that he would lead Woking into the League but, although the Club finished in third place, his style of play and his personality did little to endear him to the fans. A poor start to the 1998/99 campaign led to his

dismissal. Brian McDermott joined Woking on a non-contract basis and achieved a temporary upturn in fortunes, guiding the team to a ninth place finish. However, the Club struggled again in 1999/00 and McDermott was relieved of his duties in March 2000. Colin Lippiatt returned and secured a 14th place finish. The 2000/01 season saw yet another poor start, but finished 14th before against struggling the next year, with Geoff Chapple back as manager. Hopes that the duo could restore Woking’s status at the top of the non-League game proved sadly unfounded. Colin Lippiatt departed in January 2002 and Glenn Cockerill, the former Southampton midfielder, joined as Chapple’s assistant. The season ended with the Club just one place above the relegation places. In the meantime very significant events had taken place off the field. The downturn in the Club’s fortunes had led to a financial crisis. With the Club facing administration or worse, successful businessman and long-time fan, Chris Ingram, came to the rescue, becoming Chairman in Feb 2002. The 2002/03 season saw the Club facing relegation and, after Chapple resigned and replaced by Glenn Cockerill took over, the club survived on the final day of the season. The Club went fulltime in 2003. The next few season saw mid-table finishes, with Cockerill leaving in March 2007 with Graham Baker and captain Neil Smith in charge. The reprieve proved only temporary, with the following two seasons producing more disappointment, culminating in the Cards’ relegation in summer 2009 from the BSP. In summer 2008 Frank Gray and Gerry Murphy assembled a young squad but the Board became disillusioned with the style of play and apparent lack of ambition and they left the Club by

mutual consent shortly before the season ended, with the Cards finishing in 17th place. The appointment in May 2008, of Kim Grant, the former Charlton striker and Ghanaian international, as Head Coach, with Phil Gilchrist as his Assistant, proved disastrous. A poor start to the season led to Grant’s contract being terminated after only seven games, with Gilchrist taking temporary charge. Gilchrist was confirmed as Manager shortly afterwards but, while he steadied the ship, the Club still found itself facing relegation with six games to go. Graham Baker was appointed caretaker manager but, with other clubs making the best of their games in hand, he was unable to lift the Club above fourth from bottom. Baker was confirmed as Manager just before the season ended and set about building a new side to compete in the Blue Square South. A storming end to the 2009-10 season saw the Cards clinch 5th place. Dover Athletic were beaten in the play-off semi-final but the Cards lost to Bath City in the final. The Club went part-time in summer 2010, with Baker and Dack both being awarded new two-year contracts. But, in spite of good runs in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy, both decided to leave the Club in January 2011, with Garry Hill taking over the reins till the end of the season. A dramatic upturn in league fortunes took the Club into 5th place, but the Cards lost to Farnborough in the play-off semi-final. The revival continued apace in the 2011-12 season, with the winning the BSBS title was won by nine points, with only five games lost all season. The Cards finished in a comfortable 12th place in their first season back in the Conference Premier, and did even better the following season, ending in 9th. STANDS North Ferriby fan Sam Shepherd discusses the importance of the victory over Guiseley last weekend... The importance of last week’s game at Guiseley cannot be underestimated. Following home defeats to Dover and Lincoln it’s fair to say Ferriby’s season had reached the point of no return. Rooted to the bottom of the National League and seven points from safety, time was beginning to run out for Steve Housham and his side.

ball, before they took the lead in the 13th minute. It was very much against the run of play and it would have been easy for the players to buckle, but they didn’t

Despite having a man advantage it looked like Ferriby would have to settle for a somewhat frustrating

At the start of the season Ferriby were written off by all who cared to offer an opinion, so you could argue that any result this season doesn’t matter because Ferriby were expected to be the whipping boys. The Villagers have defied these opinions this season and have put up a real battle in the face of adversity. The manager and the players are singing from the same hymn sheet, they want to fight until the very end this season in a bid to survive, so with that in mind, the game at Guiseley was immensely important for them. Another defeat would have made Everest look like an easier mountain to climb than the one they would have faced to stay up. The squad is decimated by injuries and Guiseley were unbeaten in 12 home games, a guaranteed home win? Far from it! Ferriby were excellent from the first whistle. Guiseley barely touched the 22

and that is a credit to them. Ferriby created several half chances in the first half, but couldn’t convert them so they went in at half time trailing. Steve Housham must have delivered one hell of a team talk because his team were unbelievable in the second half. They dominated it from the first whistle and levelled the scores thanks to the tireless Reece Thompson. He lobbed the keeper from 20 yards, with a little help from the wind, to get Ferriby on terms. He was then fouled by the Guiseley skipper who was red carded.

draw. Step forward Jake Skelton. The big centre half picked up a knock down from a free kick, swivelled and smashed a shot into the bottom corner to the delight of the healthy Villagers away support. Ferriby held on for an absolutely massive win and Steve Housham was delighted after the game. Another defiant result from Housham’s battling Villagers which will set them up perfectly for another relegation “six pointer” today. Enjoy the game! Sam
