THE MANAGER
TERRY
SPILLANE
I’d like to welcome you all to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome Barkingside to our home ground. Happy Easter everyone! Since my last notes we have played two very tough games and came out with four points to keep us within touching distance of the Play-offs. First up we were at home last week and we beat a resurgent and very good Waltham Abbey side (who then beat Hornchurch last Saturday!). Me & Tony had watched earlier that week and we knew it’d be a tough game; so to come out 4-3 winners on the day we were very pleased. I thought on the day we played very well for large parts of the game and deserved the win. It was a real “team” effort and that’s something I always like to see. 04
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
Last Saturday, we travelled to Bury who had been in a pretty poor run. We told the players that all runs, be they good or bad, have to end & that we’d need to really put a shift in to get anything out if the game. We got off to a great start and went ahead through a powerful headed Vinesy goal after excellent work from Lee had set him up. We then had another chance that unfortunately Jay just pulled wide when in a good position. It’s fair to say we edged the first-half and deserved to go in 1-0 up. We knew that Bury would throw the kitchen sink etc at us in the second-half so we
were well prepared for that and would make the necessary adjustments when needed. We were prepared to soak up the pressure and try and hit them on the break. Bury play a very direct style so we knew what to expect and I thought we dealt with them really well. Unfortunately they got back on level terms when the man in the middle awarded them a penalty for handball!! That in my opinion was hard enough to take as I thought it hit Gorbs in the stomach area & to make it worse he sent Gorbs off as well! The game ended 1-1 and in hindsight although it wasn’t our best performance, we still came away with a point away from home that could be
THE MANAGER
crucial who knows!! We’ve two games this weekend starting at home today against Barkingside, for whom I have strong admiration for as they are a very friendly club, I ground shared with them whilst at Redbridge, and I’m good friends with their chairman Jimmy Flanagan, whom I also respect greatly. It will be a very tough game as they are renowned for being hard to play against.
another really tough fixture for us and will no doubt there will be a good crowd and excellent atmosphere. Hopefully we get maximum points! We will give it our best that’s for sure. Lastly as always I’d like to thank the loyal supporters we get at both home and away games. Get behind the team as it really does make a difference when you do! Come on you Mead!
Then on Monday we travel just a few miles away to play a local derby v Phoenix Sports. Again

THE BOARDROOM
PAUL
BOWDENBROWN
May I welcome the Officials, Players and Supporters of Barkingside FC to our home at SCT this Good Friday afternoon, and hope after an enjoyable game and refreshments everyone has a safe journey home. May I also say a hello to all of our season ticket holders, all of you have made this season totally awesome, as it’s great to see families enjoying themselves either on an afternoon or an evening watching their local team. As a personal thank you to all the Mums and young members of these families, I have arranged, whilst stocks last that, they are given either a crème egg for the Mums and the older children and a chocolate bunny for the small ones, please enjoy them
06

whilst watching your team and a Happy Easter to you all. As you will have read I have once again agreed to offer for next season the £30 season ticket initiative and I hope more local supporters will take up this very good offer. Where else would you find such an offer that will allow you and your family to watch and support your football club for around £0.36 pence per match? So all I ask is that you pass the information of the £30 season ticket offer on to all of your friends,
neighbours and also the Mums and Dads who you meet picking up their children at the school gate, or your work colleagues. Remember the only condition I ask is that any applicant must live within 5 miles of the football ground. Come on we have 37 tickets let’s get it over 100 for next season, remember we are a community club whatever people may say we are very much as you are a part of the community. Well since we were last here playing at the SCT we have been on the road
THE BOARDROOM
travelling many long miles picking up points, and trying to make up for those lost points during November and December. I must admit the feeling amongst the players and management is very strong and positive and they believe they can get that last position for being involved with the Play-Offs. So let’s ensure you are fully behind your team as I have said on many occasions your vocal support is like a twelfth player on the pitch so please keep it up.
“That would allow Tyrus to find a club that he can walk into, my only verbal stipulation I had with Tyrus was that he did not join a club in our league as I did not wish to play against him for the remainder of the season.” There has been a number of player movements within the club during the last week, as we all know our club captain Derek Duncan decided to leave and renew a partnership with Keith at VCD, but on Tuesday after discussing the matter fully with Tyrus a player who was signed on a FA Contract. I decided that as he was not a happy player only being a squad player, as
he felt he was good enough to be playing every week, like all players do, but after listening to him I decided for the good will of not only Tyrus but the squad and the management that on this occasion rather than trying to sell him on, or put him out on loan I would terminate his contract. That would allow Tyrus to find a club that he can walk into and be guaranteed a place each week, my only verbal stipulation I had with Tyrus that he did not join a club in our league as I did not wish to play against him for the remainder of the season. I personally wish him well for the future and I thank him for his service whilst he has been a great servant for this club, but I felt the time had arrived that we should part company by shaking hands as professionals do and with regards to this matter as Chairman I think I have acted very honourably. Here we are at that time of the season that we start making plans for the next season, what teams are going to be registered, trials for new players, for our first year pupils within our academy which using puns has certainly been a trial this year for ALL of us involved with the academy since we took it over from the SCT/Trust Thamesmead. At this point I thank all those for their continued support and input, because I feel after discussing the matter fully with Ian and other professionals we are running it correctly and therefore should reap the benefits in due course sooner than later hopefully. The youth section has asked me to consider allowing them to be fully independent next season and be affiliated separately within their own right, so I am suggesting they become our community youth
section, and rather than be governed by the clubs rules they will be party to a licence agreement that will cover the senior club and protect its name whilst youth players are playing and wearing the clubs colours. But I am sure my new Director of Football Ian Docker currently my Academy Manager, the role he will continue in, will get his teeth into this as part of the complete reorganisation that I have asked for within the clubs team structure. I have asked Terry if he wished to remain as our manager for next season to which he said it was his intention if I wanted him. I personally think he has a lot of unfinished business to finish at this club and I was quiet calm wanting him to stay at the club. I feel although on the field we have had our ups and downs throughout the season, and as I am rather a tough chairman to work for because I cannot accept failure, and to be honest where we have dropped points it was down to players on the park not any decision made by the management in my opinion. But hey overall here at this time we find ourselves fighting for a Play-Off place. Now he can now start to prepare the squad of the players he wishes to retain for next season now rather than later, I always believe it’s best to get formal matters agreed with your management team and players before the end of the season you are playing. Now let’s enjoy our Friday afternoons football and I wish all of you a very Happy Easter and I look forward to you continued support. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman & Managing Director

CARLY’S CORNER
CARLY’S
CORNER
In her regular column this year first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list...
Good afternoon all! We welcome Barkingside to Bayliss Avenue today as we kick start our bank holiday weekend with the first of our two games.
week meant that our boys had to dig deep to muster a point showing great character and determination. In injury news;
It’s set to be an important weekend for us in our Play-Off push, with two wins a must to keep us in the running for one of those all important places.
Jack Barry was subbed early in the second-half last weekend due to injury but I am pleased to confirm that after a week of rest and treatment he is fit and available for selection today.
After a 1-1 draw last weekend away to Bury we hope to get back to winning ways today. Again going down to 10 men early on in the second-half last
Hoppo continues to get fitter having played a part in 2 of our last 3 firstteam games making appearances from the bench. He hopes to make a
full 90 minute return soon. Matty Toms is still out with a back problem, having seen a specialist it is thought sciatica is the cause of his pain and he looks to be out now for the rest of the season. A massive blow for him but without doubt he’ll be back next season fitter and raring to go. I hope you all enjoy the game and have a lovely Easter! THE UNDER 21S
THE UNDER 21s with Gary Ryan
Happy Easter everyone!
which we scored 23 goals.
On Tuesday night, our Under-21 squad journeyed over to Essex to take on a mature looking Billericay Town side who were, like us, in pursuit of league glory.
When at the start of the season I looked at what appeared to be a threadbare squad. I think a run of only 1 defeat in 10 matches during which we have played some delightful football shows how far we have come this term.
Although on the night we fell to defeat by 4-1, we were well in contention following a 54 minute Ainsley Everett equaliser until secondhalf goals for our hosts gave the scoreline a slightly distorted look. It was heartening, as always, to give debuts to 17-year-old Alfie Day and 19-year-old Jordan Williams, while also welcoming goalkeeper Max Ovenden back to the squad after 9 weeks out through injury. So our hopes of putting further pressure on league leaders AFC Hornchurch may have taken a knock, but it gave me reason to look back with pride on our 5 match winning streak leading up to the match, during 10
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
On a personal level, we have seen young left-sided player Sam Orisatoki become an established member of the England Schoolboys Under-18 side, starting in the opening 2 matches as the boys compete for the inspiresport Centenary Shield. The Club should celebrate Sam’s outstanding achievement with pride. During this season alone, we have seen the likes of Jeremiah Efe, Elliot Usher, Laurent Mendy, Max Ovenden, Charlie Himbury and Philippe Blaettler promoted to first-team duty, as well as bringing players through the Under 18’s to our squad.
It’s also been a pleasure to assist Terry and the first-team management in the rehabilitation of injured players into the senior side, in particular Jack Hopkins who is now fit and ready for action. We now look ahead to next season with the continued support of the clubs chairman, Paul Bowden Brown, in cementing our future as an integral part of the club. To this end, I’m delighted to have added Paul and Glen Taylor to my management team, along with Richard Green to take on Secretarial duties, as we look to gear ourselves up for further progress next year. Good luck to Terry and the boys over this Easter weekend as we look to secure 6 crucial points in our bid to secure a Play-off spot and promotion to the Ryman Premier League. Gary Ryan
FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK
FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Good afternoon everyone welcome back to SCT for todays Ryman league match against Barkingside i hope they enjoy their brief stay with us. Last Saturday saw us get a battling draw at Bury Town , a good first-half performance saw us take a one goal lead into the break courtesy of Paul Vines. We were though to be under the cosh for most if the second-half but after some good defending and excellent goalkeeping from Walks they needed a penalty to break us down to share the points.
Our recent run of good results has put us on the edge of the Play-Off positions we still need results to go our way but all we can do is keep winning. Today’s opponents are fighting for their Ryman status so we expect a tough encounter. On Monday we travel to Pheonix Sports for our local derby its a 3:00 kick-off so come along and support the team. On the player front Tyrus Gordon -Young has left the
club by mutual agreement. Tyrus has been a good servant to the club and I wish him well for his future. We do though welcome Joe Vines to the club , he will join his brother Paul in the squad we hope he enjoys the remainder of the season with us. Enjoy the match and a Happy Easter to everyone. Defeats against Heybridge Swifts and Cray Wanderers have left the club facing relegation sitting second bottom of the table ahead of only Redbridge. Six wins and nine draws whilst scoring 46 goals but conceding 92 have seen the Sky Blues rack up just 27 points. The side gave themselves a chance of staying up with wins over Witham Town, Wroxham and a 1-1 draw with Tilbury but the task facing the side is difficult.
THE OPPOSITION
CLUB HISTORY
Barkingside Football Club, based in Barkingside in the London Borough of Redbridge, was formed by a small group of enthusiasts in 1898, playing in the Ilford League, on a ground opposite the State Cinema in Barkingside High Road.
They gained their first honour after the First World War sharing the Championship of the Ilford League. The club then disbanded in 1922–23 due to lack of support but resumed in 1925 as Barkingside Boys Guild in the Ilford Minor League. The club gained the use of a pitch at Barkingside Recreation Ground, where they played for 25 years before moving to their present ground in Station Road. The club then became very successful in local football, winning the Ilford and District League on several occasions prior to World War II. The club resumed immediately after the Second World War and after a few seasons in the Ilford League they entered the South Essex League, finishing runners-up in their first season. The next season the club joined the Walthamstow League and also obtained membership of the Amateur Football Alliance. The club then entered the London League in 1950 and finished runnersup in their first season. They won the League Cup in 1956 and were beaten finalists in 1953 and 1963. They also won the Ilford Festival Cup and the Romford Charity Cup in 1952. Barkingside first entered the London Senior Cup in 1957–58. The club then joined the newly formed Greater
London League in 1964–65 and won promotion to the Premier Division in 1965–66, but were relegated after only one season. Barkingside entered the newly formed London Spartan League in 1976–77 and finished fourth, which earned them promotion to the Premier Division. This promotion was shortlived and they were relegated the following season.
They also attained a creditable 5thplace finish in the League in 1985–86 which earned them a return to the Premier Division, where they remained until joining the Spartan South Midlands League, which was born by the merger of the London Spartan League and the South Midlands League in 1996–97. The league championship and the London Senior Cup were won in a memorable first season. Prior to the start of season 1998–99 the club came under the control of new owners and work then commenced on the ground, which was christened Oakside Stadium, to bring it up to Isthmian League standard. In 1998–99 they won the Premier Division again but were denied promotion to the Isthmian League. After this setback the club wishing to move to the Essex Senior League, but this request was denied due to an FA ruling that did not allow sideways moves within the soccer pyramid. To make moving possible the club withdrew from senior football for one season and entered the Essex Senior League in 2000–01; a successful first season saw them finish third in the league and winners of the Gordon
Brastead Memorial Cup.
In the following season there were massive changes at the club: the senior management team and committee moved on en-bloc to an Isthmian League club and the lease at Oakside was sold on to Ford United (now Redbridge) Investment by Jimmy Chapman, the Ford–Redbridge Chairman, has seen Oakside developed to a grade 1 ground and Barkingside have a permanent ground-share agreement; to demonstrate the intention that Barkingside would continue Jimmy Chapman became their president in a gesture of support. Seasons 2001–02, 2002–03, 2003–04 saw the club finish in fairly moderate mid-table positions as the new committee worked to consolidate the long-term future. In the 2007–08 season the club finished 3rd in the Essex Senior League finishing behind Enfield 1893 and champions Concord Rangers in the table. The end of the season saw the club enter a new era after the Taylor family left the club after 8 years at the helm of the club. The 2009–10 season saw the squad finish 9th in the table, as injuries and a fixture pile up disrupted the side. The club celebrated 115 years in season 2012/13 & marked this by having the clubs most successful season ,we gained promotion to the Ryman League for the first time in the clubs history, we also won the Essex Senior League cup by a record score of 9-1.

Saturday 12th March 2016 | Ryman League Division One North | Sporting Club Thamesmead | Att: 92
The Mead took advantage of Cray Wanderers inactivity to edge to within four points of the Play Off places following a pulsating seven goal thriller as they edged out Waltham Abbey. After a quiet start, The Mead took the lead on 24 minutes when Harrison cut in from the right before firing in off the left post from the edge of the box. Waltham then took the lead by scoring twice in three minutes through Christian Assambolonga, who showed why he’s got League club’s chasing his signature.
The Mead were level though before half time as Vinesy powered home Harrion’s cross with a fine header that rocketed into the net. The Mead took the lead for a second time when Gazi connected with a clearance (after Tommy Spillanes cross had only been half cleared) and his shot flew into the bottom corner through the crowd past an unsighted keeper. The lead was extended ten minutes into the half when Vinesy expertly headed home Lee Prescott’s corner – making room for himself and steering a header home before Assembolonga completed his trick with 24 minutes left as he beat Walks
to a left wing cross. The visitors should have been reduced to ten men when Tom Wood clearly knocked the ball away from Tyrus with his hand as the Mead substitute so very nearly managed to get away from the Abbey defender. Walks then redeemed his earlier error by pulling off a brilliant save away to his left to deny sub Yemi Adelani with a full length tip round the post. That’s four wins in a row now for the Mead which takes us (for 24 hours at least before Cray host Soham) to within four points of the Play Off places.

Saturday 19th March 2016 | Ryman League Division One North | Ram Meadow | Att: 235
Paul Vines first-half header and a gallant rear-guard action earned the Mead a point at Ram Meadow which takes Terry Spillane’s side to with four points of the Ryman North’s Play Off places. Vinesy’s header after only eight minutes looked set to condemn the home side to their fifth successive defeat before the Mead were reduced to ten men on 74 when sub Marc Gorbell was sent off for handling in the box to
concede the penalty from which Bury scored their goal to earn a point. Such was the Mead’s rear-guard action that Andy Walker produced a series of outstanding saves to secure the point that edges the Mead closer to post season following results elsewhere going our way. The Mead move onto the Easter programme knowing that victories over Barkingside on
Good Friday (2:00pm kick off at the SCT) and then onto the local derby at Phoenix Sports on Easter Monday will well and truly keep Terry’s side in the mix for the Play Offs! As the Mead went to press we were still counting the sponsorship money, and so we’ll have the full amount that we raised next weekend when we welcome Dereham Town to the SCT...

COMMERCIAL CORNER
COMMERCIAL NEWS
with Mike Green
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the SCT this Good Friday afternoon! HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE Next season’s season tickets will officially go on sale today. Existing season ticket holders will have been given a renewal form as they entered the ground this afternoon and those who haven’t attended will receive their form in the post early next week. We’re delighted to confirm that just a couple of weeks after the Premier League have agreed to offer away fans tickets for £30.00 (some clubs even less) we’re offering you the whole season of Mead home games for the same £30.00 - that’s right EVERY SINGLE RYMAN LEAGUE HOME GAME the Mead play in season 2016/2017 for just £30.00... But then again that’s not good enough for you our fantastic home fans, so we’ve gone a stage further and we’ll make it a Family Ticket for up to four people, so that you can bring the whole family to the SCT for season 2016/2017... So in numbers, that’s £1.30 per game, or THIRTY THREE PENCE EACH if Mum and Dad and two children come to the SCT - surely
one of THE best deals in Non League football... If you need a form, they’ll be available in the Mead Bar and from the Committee Room this afternoon and at our two remaining home games this season.. Take care everyone - to our friends from Barkingside good luck for the rest of the season and a safe return home, and to all Mead fans don’t forget we’re at home again next for our penultimate home game of the season when we welcome Dereham Town at the usual time of 3:00pm - I for one hope its a warmer day than the one when we went to Norfolk back in November.
at 3:00pm - the boys are agonisingly close to achieving something massive on the pitch - nows it OUR turn to give them the extra push they need! Cheers Greenie If your company would like to sponsor a forthcoming home game, please see Greenie TODAY or contact him on commercialttfc@live.co.uk or alternatively 07845 751319
Don’t forget before then, we’ve the “derby” at Phoenix Sports on Monday

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE
CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE
11
CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34
