HARROGATE TOWN Sitting four points adrift of Solihull Moors, North Ferriby United will be looking to collect maximum points when Harrogate Town travel to the Eon Visual Media Stadium. The last time the sides met they played out a thrilling 3-3 draw which saw three goals scored late on. Liam King’s brace cancelled out Dominic Knowles and Brendan Daniels’ goals before Danny Emerton struck in injury-time. Not to be outdone Paul Clayton scored in the 93rd minute to rescue a point for Harrogate. Town come into this fixture with a real mixed bag of results. From losing to Chorley and more recently FC United of Manchester to thrashing top of the table Solihull Moors 6-0 on home soil. Whilst the side are capable of performing against the bigger teams they can be found out against weaker opposition. Harrogate sit in the final Playoff position but have Nuneaton Town breathing down their necks and will be looking to all three points to assure their fifth-place.

Harrogate Town

CLUB HISTORY The club was formed in 1914 as Harrogate AFC,but owing to First World War did not play a game until they joined the West Yorkshire League in 1919./20.

The next season they also played in the newly formed Yorkshire League. In 1921/22 they played in the Midland Counties League and after a disastrous season in the Northern League in 1931/32, Harrogate F C. folded. In 1935 a new team called Harrogate Hotspurs was founded and in 1948 changed their name to Harrogate Town. They played in the West Yorkshire League until 1957 when they re-joined the Yorkshire League. After the introduction of the Non-League Pyramid in 1982 they joined the Northern Counties East, but after just five years they joined the

newly formed Northern Premier League First Division in 1987/88.Town remained at this level until 2002 when they won the Championship and were promoted to the Premier Division. When Nationwide Conference North and South were created in 2004/5, Town’s 5th place finish in the Unibond Premier Division secured them a place in this new league. In their five seasons at this level Town finished sixth three times and reached the play-off ’s once, where they lost to Stafford Rangers. Long standing manager Neil Aspin left at the end of season 08/09 when Town finished ninth. His place was taken by Simon Weaver the ex-Lincoln, Scarborough and Nuneaton player. Unfortunately, Town finished rock bottom in 09/10 with 30 points, only to be saved from relegation to the Evo-Stik North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

League by the expulsion of Northwich Victoria. Following their reprieve Town finished in a creditable 12th position in season 2010/11. An injury blighted 2011/12 season saw Town finish in 15th place after a tense battle against relegation. Last season saw Town just miss out on a play off place when they finished sixth, but they reached the second round of the F A Cup with a victory over Torquay United, their first win over a League club, before losing to Hastings United on penalties. In season 2012/13, Town challenged for a play-off place but eventually finished ninth, whilst in the West Riding County Cup, they reached the final only to fall to a last minute penalty against Eccleshill United. In season 2014/15, Town finished in 15th place in the Vanarama Conference North.

MATCH REPORT 3 3

HARROGATE TOWN Knowles (24), Daniels (51), Clayton (90+3)

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED King (2, 87 (pen)), Emerton (90)

September 15, 2015 | National League North | Wetherby Road | Att: 397 An amazing final seven minutes of play saw Ferriby gain a point in a game that they looked like losing as late as the 87th minute. At that point, The Villagers were 2-1 down but scored twice through Liam King and Danny Emerton to take the lead before Town equalised in the third minute of added time.

The game had also started fairly explosively. The Villagers shocked their host by taking the lead after just 80 seconds. Sam Topliss’ cross found Ryan Kendall in the area. The striker laid-off the ball to Liam King who scored from close range. The Villagers controlled the next 20 minutes. The midfield constantly forced Harrogate back and Curtis Bateson and Danny Clarke caused problems down the wings. Kendall and Tom Denton were working well up front and made life difficult for the home defence. Harrogate had been limited to quick breaks from defence and in the 24th minute one of them produced an equaliser. Joe Colbeck’s cross in to the sixyard box was not dealt with by the Ferriby defence and Dominic Knowles headed home. The second-half largely lacked the intensity of the first until the final seven minutes.

Paul Clayton put a header wide at the near post. Town took the lead after 51 minutes. An Harrogate attack was only partially cleared, allowing Daniels to cut in and score with a cross-shot. For The Villagers, King was unlucky to see a volley go just wide whilst Clarke had a shot blocked by Crook after the keeper had mis-punched a Bateson corner. With time running-out it looked as if The Villagers were heading for a defeat. However, the spirit in this side is such that they do not give up. Kendall was tripped just inside the area by Lewis Turner and King sent Crook the wrong way from the spot to equalise. Just three minutes later Ferriby were ahead. Louis Bruce’s free-kick was headed by Denton to Kendall who squared the ball to Danny Emerton who scored from almost on the line. The game was still far from over as Town continued put balls in to the Ferriby penalty area. Inevitably, someone had to eventually get on the end of one of them and Clayton glanced home Colbeck’s cross with virtually the last touch of the game.

Harrogate started the better of the two sides and

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S

Sam Shepherd pens his regular column and talks about all the latest Ferriby performances and the arrival of Wayne Brooksby... Things are really starting to hot up at the top of the Vanarama National League North Table. Ferriby currently sit second, 4 points behind leaders Solihull after a hard fought victory over Brackley and a disappointing defeat away at Worcester City since my last column. AFC Fylde and Harrogate Town both sit three points behind Ferriby having both played one game less than the Villagers so it couldn’t be any tighter in the Play-off positions. Strugglers Brackley made Ferriby work extremely hard for their 2-1 win with goals from Danny Clarke and Tom Denton eventually sealing the three points for Billy Heath’s men. If Brackley continue to put in performances like that away from home I think they will stay up easily. Ferriby followed up this win

with a disappointing defeat away at Worcester City. Worcester always tend to give us a difficult game and this one was no exception but Ferriby didn’t help themselves and it was a bad day at the office all round. After the defeat at Worcester today’s game against Harrogate Town takes on huge importance. Harrogate are within striking distance of Ferriby in the race for promotion sitting just three points behind us in the table. We are now getting to the make or break stage of the season and three points today would be absolutely invaluable for Ferriby to keep pace with leaders Solihull and to create some breathing space from the teams below us. Harrogate are a dangerous side who play some excellent football as we saw earlier in the season in the reverse fixture which was a thrilling 3-3 draw. Last week’s North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

game at Stalybridge was called off due to the bad weather so the players should be well rested and prepared going into this game. Ferriby have been boosted by the return to the club of Wayne Brooksby. Brooksby left Guiseley to seek first team football and luckily Ferriby have managed to secure his services. As we saw in his brief loan spell earlier in the season and his time at the club a few seasons ago Brooksby is a pacey winger who has skill and can score goals similar to Curtis Bateson so it looks to be an excellent signing ahead of the difficult run in. Brooksby has stated he has ambitions to get back to playing National League football as soon as possible and he hopes to do that with Ferriby. Enjoy the game, Sam
