22 - MATCH ACTION 35 - CLUB STATS 36 - FIXTURES & RESULTS Good afternoon everyone and welcome to back to Bayliss Avenue for the second part of this week’s first team home double header… and let’s hope it’s a bit warmer than it was on Tuesday night! And it’s a welcome to our friends from Hertfordshire who have braved the M25 and the bridge to be with us on the last Saturday in January.

tonight, after bringing you the story of the Brazilian air crash before Christmas, we’ve the story of Chapocanese’s game and their first game since played last weekend… You may have heard that the major sponsorship news regarding the league – we’ve the details for you. And we’ve the Gaffers reaction to recent games and there’s the very latest from a very busy Chairman’s office…

Where did that month go? After a truly fantastic December, we’ve had an ordinary January so let’s hope that we end it on a good note today and gain some revenge for our defeat at Ware in mid-October.

Enjoy the game – safe trip home to our visitors – and don’t forget we’re here again in a fortnight’s time when we welcome Brightlingsea Regent to Bayliss Avenue…

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Ware FC on this Saturday afternoon and hope after their journey they enjoy the hospitality available. Of course it is an important match for both teams even if for totally different reasons and, after hopefully an enjoyable match, they have a safe journey home. Well here we are playing once again at home after our forgettable match against a Norwich United side last Tuesday evening. Although they took all three points on the cold evening, I felt they were not as strong as the first time we played them, it was in reality a game of players taking their chances, we could have gone in at half time 4-0 up had we taken them and the linesman had kept up with play as he missed a number of clear off sides.

The first time in 40 years I have seen an assistant wearing spectacles – I know that my glasses were steaming up with the variances of the cold temperatures on Tuesday, so how could he make the correct decisions as part of his job.

to waste time during the match, but although the referee pointed to his watch at the time of these many incidents at the end of the game there was only just over 3 minutes of extra time although not advised to us until the match was over.

As I have said on numerous occasions within previous programme notes, in my opinion the standard of refereeing has deteriorated over the last couple of seasons, and it would seem we must all accept it will never improve as the football hierarchy does not think there is a problem so why would they to accept there is a problem.

At this time of the year, we are advised by the FA regarding our standing in the respect leagues and the bookings leagues.

I read the independent views of the football reporter that attended and reported on the match on Tuesday and he quoted the same concerns as my interpretation regarding missing blatant off sides and other drops in the required refereeing standards. The Norwich team were determined

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Without divulging placings and points, I can report we are in a better place than we were last season, but I still feel that our players must seriously think about with all of their actions on and off the field. It has to improve otherwise it will place this club in a position that I do not even want to think about with regard to financial implications as allowed by the rules of the FA all due to rashness on the pitch.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

I will never criticize hard tackles, that is part of the game, but I will not tolerate dissent, I am also worried about to the deterioration of the officials actions. Referees are issuing cards for dissent when the player is only talking, but it would seem now you cannot talk to the referee or the assistants as they will take appropriate action in their eyes, and I personally believe that with regard to the respect campaign, all parties should realise it works both ways otherwise it is looking very one sided. Rant ended! On the 9th January, we started our one year apprenticeship Scheme at Long Lane Kidbrooke. We initially had planned for a class of 40, but due to circumstances at the agreed start date early January, we only had around 30, but now I am advised that we have 36 so there are only 4 more places vacant. But due to the late interest, I am increasing the size of the required class to 50, and so there you have it an extra 14 places to fill within the next 2 weeks. So if you are interested or have young 16 year olds that are sitting at home under your feet that need a qualification together with a level one coaching badge, and get paid £100 per week, please make contact with the club before the vacant spaces are filled. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank both Darren Ryan of SCL our education provider and Ian Docker the club’s Director of Football & academy manager for the effort they both have put into this scheme it is very much appreciated and because of their hard work we have a very professionally run operation running at Kidbrooke. And I must not forget to thank Andrew Merritt the owner and boss

of SCL who without his help and unconditional support this Club would never have been able to operate this scheme. I have left this part to the end as I feel very strongly about it. You will all have read that our captain Scott Kinch was up in front of the FA last Monday fully supported by the club and myself on the day, against unsubstantiated and unfounded allegations. Unfortunately, although it took all day Scott was found guilty of the alleged charge resulting in him being suspended from all football for nine games and a fine of £1000.00. I personally do not feel that the process as it was administered by the FA was correct therefore I have instigated a complaint with regard to the content of the process, and secondly I feel that had we been allowed legal representation on the day we could have proved the charge unfounded therefore I am hoping that I will be able to use through the appeal process. I am at this time awaiting the Judicial Services department within the FA to advise me of my options. By losing Scott from our team selection is a very great blow to Tommy and his players, but now is the time for all the players to come up to the mark until Scott returns. I hope for the benefit of the good name of the club I can get matters resolved that will allow Scott to return sooner than later to play the sport he loves. I hope you enjoy the match Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Bayliss Avenue for today’s game with Ware, to who we bid a warm welcome!

second half we got caught chasing the game.

Since my last notes, I have been really disappointed with our results.

They’d brought a few in as they’re fighting for their lives, but we should have come away with something but we didn’t!

Don’t get me wrong we got we got what we deserved against Cheshunt – nothing! We were poor and just not good enough do no excuses from me on that one.

Then on Tuesday, we should have got something out of the game – we got into some good areas again, but didn’t take our chances and went a goal down to a really poor goal.

We then went to Wroxham last weekend and started well before we had Aaron sent off after 25 minutes – we still should have gone in front but didn’t take our chances and in the

Even at the end, a toe comes out and it doesn’t bounce right for Alex – we deserved something from the game, but its one of those things. On Tuesday we were back to a little

bit to how we were earlier in the season when we had the really bad run where we were playing well but didn’t get the just desserts. We’ve taken our foot off of the gas the last three or four games – we need to go back to enjoying ourselves with football. We mustn’t get so negative and aggravated that its not going right because you will get that during the course of a season – you’re going to have three or four nightmare games as a team; it happens at every level! Suspensions are what they are, but what players are getting booked for now and having to keep our

MANAGER’S NOTES

discipline with what we have to put up with is for me summed up Tuesday when we had four subs, the keeper has his gloves taped and a boy goes down for treatment on top of acknowledged time wasting by the official and yet we only play three minutes fifteen extra. People will say that we’re clutching at straws, but as managers and coaches all we want is consistency. Crowd reactions ends up making fun of officials and that’s not right but what can we do? If we say anything we get sent to the stands and it costs you money. OB mentioned on Tuesday that he wouldn’t want to play under today’s rules and I have to agree with him. It’s a shame but footballs evolved and you evolve with it. Unfortunately I think its something that’s got to be looked at in a proper way and not in a stupid way as every manager that

we go to and speak to say the same thing – they’re frightened to address it and that’s wrong. We should be able to sit down and talk about it and try and help the officials – at the end of the day I wouldn’t want to be a referee or an assistant. Fair play to them, but if they need some help then let’s give them that help!

But it’s not over yet and we’ll still chase it but we’re kicking ourselves now where we were – you have to remember that when we lost at Norwich in October we were actually adrift at the bottom of the league. If we keep playing like we did on Tuesday today and going forward and take our chances as I’ve said before, we’ll be fine!

Playing wise, we’ve turned it around since we played at Ware and have got to where we are – we’ve got thirteen games left so we’ve just got to try and get as many points as we can and stripping it back to the bare bones, if we can get more points than last year – which I’ll be disappointed if we didn’t – it’s an improvement and we had a great FA Cup run!

We’re not a million miles away – its been a very, very tough year off the pitch and the main thing is that the club are coming through it and I think we’ll finish strong and as long as we can keep the season alive that’s the most important thing, and that all starts again today with your help and backing!

So you look back at the season and says yes it’s been frustrating as it could have been a lot better.

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Afternoon everyone and welcome to SCT for our next Ryman League match against Ware, we hope they enjoy their brief stay with us. We’ll be hoping today to stop the run of defeats we have suffered recently at Romford, Wroxham and Norwich here on Tuesday. There are no easy matches in this division regardless of where a team is in the league, they all bring their own strengths onto the pitch. Both Romford and Wroxham

were as always hard working and difficult to break down, we never played exceptionally well, but deserved something out of those games. On a difficult pitch on Tuesday at home to Norwich they raced into a two goal lead, before Paul Vines pulled one back early in the second half, we had the better of play without really looking like getting anything from the game. Tommy and Alex are working hard to get us back on the winning trail that saw up climb to a mid-table

position, hopefully today will see us return to winning ways. Ware were very impressive when we played them at their place earlier in the season and I am surprised to see them so low in the table, but they are now under new management and that sometimes is the little boost a club needs to turn the corner. Enjoy today’s match. Dave Joy Club Secretary

CLUB INFO Nickname: The Blues Founded: 1892 Chairman: Inanc Elitok Manager: Anwar Uddin Last Season: 11th Ground: Wodson Park Capacity: 3,300

A changing of the guard has took place at Ware, with new boss Anwar Uddin making his mark on the side.

no less than 15 players released and four signed the likes of Rokas Janilionis, Russell Harley, Teo Borozam and Imedd Kartita.

After a string of 11 defeats, 1 draw and three wins, Ken Charlery departed the club, with the side slipping to 19th in the table.

With such a vast change in players, Ware are something of an unknown quantity, but the Mead know this is a vital game if they are to harbour any lingering hopes of reaching the play-offs.

Uddin’s impact was instant with his first game in charge a resounding 5-0 victory over Great Wakering Rovers. In terms of personell, Uddin is already stamping his mark on the side with

At present the gap stands at 11 points, which isn’t beyond the club, but a three-point haul this afternoon is vital.

CLUB HISTORY The Club was founded in 1892 and although first called Ware Town soon changed its name to plain Ware FC.

This unassuming title makes it probably the shortest named affiliate of the Football Association and has caused problems for programme editors and journalists ever since. In fact, the Club has been anything but unassuming. It has held senior status from its very beginning, entering the Herts Senior Cup for the first time in 1893, and winning the cup on the first of five occasions in 1899 with a 2-1 win over Hitchin at St Albans. By this time Ware had been instrumental in founding the East Herts League and had won its championship on two of the three times it had been competed for. The club was to win it five more times before moving on to the North Middlesex League in 1907 and then also to the Herts County League in 1908. The Championship of the latter came that season in a three-way play-off against St Albans City and Welwyn. After the First World War the Club gained a league and cup double with a second Herts County League Championship and a fourth Herts Senior Cup win in 1922.

special train to Ware, everybody being in high spirits.

The Cup was marched through the town in front of a cheering throng.” Indeed, it was later recalled that the cup was taken through the town on subsequent nights and that stops were made outside public houses where it was charged with beer before being drained by the crowd. Shortly after this Ware joined the Spartan League in which they were to enjoy several successes, winning the Division 2(B) Championship in 1926, Division 1 in 1951 with the highest “goals for”total ever achieved by a club in the Spartan League, and the Premier Division in 1952. In these later years the Club also made significant progress in the old Amateur Cup meeting many famous sides on the way. One of these was Hendon, against whom Ware drew their largest attendance of 3,800 in the 1st Round in January 1957. Moving on to the Delphian and then Athenian League, Ware enjoyed another successful period. Two promotions, two league cup wins and two reserve championships paved the way for progress in the FA Cup. In this Ware reached the First Round proper for the first time in 1968 when they travelled to the then Third Division side Luton Town.

The scenes in Ware when the team returned with the Senior Cup tell us something about the hold that football had on local loyalties at the time.

The opposition had a 100% home record but the game was scoreless with 30 minutes to go before a judicious substitution broke the stalemate and left Ware beaten 6-1 at the final whistle.

The local paper reported that “Large crowds awaited the return of the

In these successful circumstances it was not surprising that Ware pressed

THE OPPOSITION

for entry to the expanding Isthmian League. This was achieved for season 1975/76 and they have maintained their place at that level ever since. This is thanks most recently to their Division 2 Championship season of 2005/6 under manager Glen Alzapiedi which carried them into Division 1 just before Division 2 was disbanded. Alzapiedi’s side brought further distinction with another FA Cup First Round appearance in 2007 which saw a narrow home defeat against Kidderminster Harriers in front of 2,123 spectators, a record for the current ground at Wodson Park. Before that a tenth Herts Senior Cup Final in 2001 and another in 2008 have emphasised the club’s long history and continuity. Ware is the first of only three possible candidates to appear in this final in three separate centuries, evidence that it is still one of the county’s leading clubs. After a poor start to the 2013/4 season Kem Kemal was appointed manager and steered the club clear of relegation worries. The 2014/5 season was one of consolidation with a tenth place finish but, with Ware then in the Southern League, Kemal resigned half way through the following season. His replacement was the former Birmingham, Watford, Barnet and Peterborough player Ken Charlery who cemented Ware’s league position during the rest of the season. A return to the Isthmian League saw the club have a good start but slowly drop down the table before ken was replaced by Anwar Uddin in January 2017.

disciplined young men.

On Wednesday this week, our academy lads played a strong Crystal Palace Trust side and unfortunately got beaten 9-0.

They are all finding their feet and we are seeing their level compared to their team mates.

It’s such a frustrating time for Gary and the lads, as some of our players have been missing training and been unavailable for matches. The lads who are holding the fort are doing a fantastic job and even though the lads are getting beat, all players are improving. They are getting despondent, but they must remember they are playing against ex-professional academy players. Keep it going boys!

Our satellite centre in Gravesend have been doing well and two of the lads will be given the opportunity to train with the U21 side next week. I will let you know how they get on... Finally from me today – a reminder that our trials are coming up soon for September and season 2017/18 – please see opposite for the details… For more info please contact me on Academy_thamesmeadtownfc@ outlook.com Yours in sport.

CHANGES TOMATCH SPONSORSHIP ACTION

Changes in the offing... The Ryman League will have a new title sponsor from next season after announcing the ending of the longest running sports sponsorship in UK football as the Isthmian Football League’s record-breaking partnership with Ryman the Stationer will cease at the end of the 2016-17 campaign. Negotiations with a replacement sponsor are ongoing and an announcement is expected shortly after the Isthmian League officially confirmed the ending of the Ryman title sponsorship on Saturday night. Having led the way in sponsorship since securing Rothmans in 1973 as football’s first title sponsors, Theo Paphitis stepped with his nationwide stationers in 1997 and has sponsored the Isthmian League ever since, adding the Ryman Youth League and Ryman Development League as they were introduced. This season, clubs played with specially produced match balls marked with the number 20 to celebrate the milestone in sponsorship. Paphitis and his businesses have also teamed up with the Ryman League’s 72 clubs over the last two decades to raise thousands for charities and good causes, most notably on Red Nose

Day. Paphitis said: “The last twenty years as sponsor of the Isthmian League have created some fantastic sporting memories for me personally, and also for my businesses. It has been a pleasure to have been associated with the league for such a long period of time as grassroots football has always been close to my heart. Some of the players who are playing today have only ever known it as the Ryman League, but nothing lasts forever.” Mead Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown said: ”I feel that we will certainly miss their involvement, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the Ryman Group for their support and involvement over the years, and I would say that any member of the Group will always be welcome at this Club. Whoever is going to try and fill the role with the League that we all love, will certainly have a large set of shoes to fill.” League chairman Nick Robinson, added: “It is a sad day, but one which we knew would come sooner or later. We are very proud of the work we have done with Ryman and other companies in the Theo Paphitis Retail Group…we have built up great

friendships and I know these will not be lost in the future.” The League also confirmed a new match-ball and bench-wear sponsorship partnership with leading international sports brand Mitre from the start of the 2017-18 season. The company, established in 1817 and still the world’s oldest manufacturers of footballs, have agreed a four year deal with a one year option which will see the Ryman League’s stars will be playing with the British firm’s latest high-tech and FIFA approved ‘hyperseam’ footballs when they kick-off in the new season. Mitre are producing a yellow-based coloured ball for use throughout the season to reflect the Isthmian’s colours and League chairman Robinson commented: “We have been very impressed with the Mitre Company and the quality of the clothing as well as the match ball is extremely good. “This is a great step forward for the Ryman League to be associated with Mitre. Given the match ball they will produce, we will use a yellow coloured ball throughout the season rather than changing from a white to yellow ball for the winter months.”

A TEAM REBORN

CHAPECOENSE: A TEAM REBORN

It was the footballing fairy story that ended in tragedy… Yet rising like a phoenix from the ashes, Brazilian side Chapecoense have played their first game since nineteen of their squad were killed in a plane crash on 29 November. You’ll remember that in December, we joined the world of football as we stood in tribute to the 71 people, including the players and staff, who were killed as they travelled to Colombia to face Atletico Nacional in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana. The club has been busy rebuilding since, and have recruited 22 new players and last Saturday played for the very first time since the tragedy as they hosted Brazilian league champions Palmeiras in a “friendly”. Three players survived the crash, defenders Neto and Alan Ruschel and former reserve goalkeeper Jackson Follmann – who had his leg amputated – and amongst naturally incredible emotional scenes received the Copa Sudamericana Trophy before the game at the Arena Conda stadium. Follmann’s story is even more heart-wrenching as the keeper is still recovering in hospital from his injuries from which it was first

20

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

thought that he would not survive. The presentation of the trophy to him in his wheelchair truly does sum up what this “little” club have gone through in the last two months. He was pushed on to the pitch in a wheelchair, whilst Neto has only just started walking without crutches, while Ruschel is targeting May for his return to football – truly remarkable and for that matter inspirational when you consider what each one of the went through that fateful night. Chapecoense were awarded the Trophy (the South American equivalent of the Europa League) following the disaster in November – a move which began with the authorities at Nacional and received universal backing from across Brazil, South America and the World.

Looking on as the trophy and medals were awarded to the families of the victims were over 20,000 fans at Chapecoense’s sold-out stadium, while another survivor, radio reporter Rafael Henzel, provided the main commentary on the game.

A TEAM REBORN

Such has been the interest in the tragedy following the massive achievements of the club who some dubbed the “Leicester City of South America” such was the unexpectedness of their success, the club received requests to cover what

was never ever going to be “just a friendly” from across the globe and gave a total of 241 journalists from around the world accreditation for the game.

On a truly emotional day there were tears on the pitch, and the fans cried on the stands! For the record, Douglas Grolli scored Chapecoense’s first goal and Amaral added a second as they drew 2-2 with the Brazilian Champions.

The game was stopped on 71 minutes (the number of victims) as players from both teams and supporters stood and clapped in honour of the dead, before

continuing with the match. It was later reported that such a tribute would be held after 71 minutes of all games that the club play in for the foreseeable future. The fans were keen to celebrate their home team again and showed their support to the newcomers - but on the stands and on the pitch, it was clear that Chapecoense’s drive to move forward will always mean looking back. This was a day when the grieving of this little club from Rio took a huge step forward and a step that the 71 who died would undoubtedly have been very proud. Sadly though the hard football doesn’t understand tragedy, and makes no allowances – the real hard work starts now once the gaze of the world moves elsewhere. But whatever happens, there will always be a small part of the football world that will always remember the name of Chapecoense. #ForcaChapecoense

The Mead slipped to a disappointing road defeat as for the second year running they lost at Wroxham with ten-men. Despite taking an early lead courtesy of Paul Vines’ 17th goal of the season – the Mead’s top scorer finished off Ellis Green’s good run – the home side levelled soon afterwards. Yet despite the setback, the Mead could have regained the lead before the break with a couple of good chances – Bode Anidugbe was denied by a good block from keeper Pride, before Vinesy came agonisingly close to his 18th of the season as Pride did well to beat out his header. Jay Porter also forced the keeper into a good low save before Leon Smith couldn’t direct his header from Greeny’s whipped free kick.

Speaking after the game, a disappointed OB admitted , “we worked a real good goal early on to lead and then conceded a really bad goal – we huffed and puffed towards the end with ten men, but we didn’t do enough to win the game.” “Officiating is a hard job to do and “all” you want is consistency in football, and in the build up to both of Aaron’s card’s I would have been proud of in my day battling away in the middle of midfield – they were foul challenges that other weeks are booking and so you can see why players get frustrated. But we’ve got to get on with and bottom line is we didn’t! We lost our shape, our discipline and organisation and it cost us.”

THE UNDER-21S

THE

UNDER-21s

Good afternoon everyone.

Have you ever had one of those weeks? On Tuesday night we tried to answer Great Wakering’s appeal for a friendly meaning a trip to Southend on a bitterly cold night. Sadly as we got closer to the ground, it became clearer and clearer that we were in trouble, and when we arrived it was clear that the pitch – unlike the Bayliss Aenue pitch that was somehow playable on Tuesday night – as frozen solid and unplayable. As I’m writing these notes on Wednesday evening, I’m now not sure if our scheduled league game this week’s game away at Hornchurch is going to go ahead because of the weather. It makes things tougher for the players who remember are still young, when you’re trying to get ready and plan things knowing at the back of your mind that the game is likely to be off – it’s tough

so fair play to the players for their attitudes… In our last game that we did play, an experienced side held a very good Billericay Town side – the league leaders to boot – with Michael Ademiluyi scored a deserved equaliser. The lads really are playing some good stuff and if you need a “fix” of Mead football before the first team are next at home in a fortnight, we’re at home on the next two Tuesdays – Haringey Borough this week (January 31st) and then Cray Wanderers next (February 7th) – we’d love to see you… and whilst on that subject its really terrific to see so many of you supporting the boys – we all really do appreciate it very much! Good luck to the Gaffer and the boys today! Gary Ryan Under-21s Manager
