THE MANAGER
THE MANAGER
CHRIS BOLDER
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Leamington to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon.
Obviously it was disappointing to lose 5-1 against Boston United last time out at home. We displayed some very poor defending in the first 45 minutes of the game. We have worked hard in training to rectify some of the issues. I think and it showed against Chorley last weekend, where we defended with much more purpose and solidity which was very pleasing. The determination the lads showed to gain a positive result was a big plus, and the way we attacked creating a good number of goalscoring opportunities. Chorley is always a difficult place to go to and they have been doing well this season and I am sure they will be looking at a play-off play, so to go there and take a point was a big confidence boost for all involved. We still have Alex Davidson injured and Paul Robson will be serving his one-match suspension, but other than that, we have a full squad to select from which is good. Looking at Leamington’s results, they have shown that they can compete with the best teams in the division, but they have lost three
of the past four, so they will be looking to try and get back to winning ways on Saturday. Like all teams in this division, they have some good experienced players and have a clear way of playing so we will be looking to nullify that. All the new lads that have come in have settled in well and are getting used to the intensity and quality required at this level. These lads are being given an opportunity to test themselves at a new level and, therefore, it will take time for them to fully implement certain aspects. I am delighted to welcome Paul on board both from a playing perspective, and also as an assistant manager. Paul has great experience and knowledge of the game, so this will give me another pair of eyes and opinions on all aspects. Paul is someone that has the respect of all players and has already formed a very good reputation for being a coach from his previous roles at other clubs. THE STRIKER
BRETT AGNEW Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Leamington in the National League North. It was a big relief to finally get on the scoresheet against Chorley, but I never doubted myself. I knew I would a result would eventually come, but it feels like a big weight has been lifted off our collective shoulders, as it stops the losing streak and that will instil huge confidence throughout the team. I love training as the manager Chris Bolder puts on a great session. There is plenty of ball work, shooting and drills to get you thinking. The squad is starting to settle down and the boys are starting to find out how each other play which can only be a good thing in the long run. Every game is possibly our last in the Conference North, so we just need to go out with no pressure and express our talent and hope that we can build a run which can happen with some confidence as you see in football every year. LEAMINGTON
Leamington arrive in East Yorkshire hoping to bounce back from the 3-2 defeat suffered against Darlngton last time out in the league. The Brakes suffered injury-time heartbreak as they slipped to defeat at the Phillips 66 Community Stadium having played for over 50 minutes with ten men, after losing Joe Clarke to two yellow cards after 40 minutes. Despite forging ahead through Jack Edwards on the hour after Callum Gittings had levelled Stephen Thompson’s early penalty with one of his own, Paul Holleran’s men began to tire on a heavy
pitch in the closing stages having played in midweek, and Thompson would have the last laugh as he struck twice late. Leamington were due to play in a midweek Birmingham Senior Cup tie at The Phillips 66 Community Stadium against West Bromwich Albion, but that fell foul of the weather, so Leamington will be raring to go today. Today’s visitors sit in 16th place in the table with 31 points garnered from their 28 matches n the National League North. Victory this afternoon could see them clumb up to 14th if results went in their favour. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

LEAMINGTON
RECENT HISTORY In 2011-2012 Paul Holleran hoped he had put the foundations in place to move the team forward in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division. With a top of the league position at Christmas things looked promising, despite early exits from both FA Cup and Trophy competitions. However, an inexplicable two months without a win in the New Year saw the Brakes slip to seventh in the league and unable to reach the play-offs, despite finishing with a twelve match unbeaten run at the end of the season. The start of 2012-13 saw the team go a further 14 matches unbeaten at the beginning of the season, and despite some fierce competition from old rivals Stourbridge, Hemel Hempstead and also Gosport Borough in the second half of the season, Brakes won 10 and drew 2 of their final 12 matches to win the Southern League Premier Division for the second time, 30 years after their previous win. The return to South Warwickshire of Football at Step 2 of the Non-League Pyramid, and more importantly, back in the Football Conference which the club last competed in at the beginning of the 1980’s, presented a new set of challenges. The inaugural season in the Conference North contained many highlights with wins over AFC Telford United and Stockport County, but these were balanced by losses against North Ferriby and Vauxhall Motors. Although the season started well with a home win against Bradford Park Avenue it was tempered by several lengthy injuries, including three cruciate ligament injuries which ruled players out for the rest of the season. Points were difficult to come by and fans’ relegation concerns were only quietened by a fantastic festive season. This led to the loss of star striker Stefan Moore to Brackley, although he was replaced by the excellent Danny Newton. The remaining season was much calmer and a competent 13th place was achieved by the end
of the season. A great deal of ground work was carried out during the summer of 2014, largely by volunteers, to ensure there would be a bright, fresh start to the 2014-15 season. The second season in a new league can often be difficult, and Leamington found this to be very true. A ‘reasonable’ position halfway through the season was not sufficient to combat the opposition’s knowledge of our style of play. The loss of players throughout the season meant relegation became a fact after a draw against North Ferriby at the last home game of the season. The 2015-16 season saw a return to the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division. A poor midseason spell saw all apparent hope of a return to the Conference North lost by the fans. So a strong finish, with a resulting play-off place, was unexpected, as was the win over second placed Redditch United in the semi-final. However, the final was a game too far and the 2-1 loss away at Hungerford Town. Key players were added to a mixture of youth and experience for 2016-17, and barring early exits from the national cup competitions the team made a very good start, topping the table for some time. They were finally toppled by eventual and deserved Champions Chippenham Town at the end of January, but finished the season strongly to secure the runners-up spot. Home advantage was key as Slough Town were defeated in the play-off semi-final, before an eventful final in front of a new record crowd of 2,102 saw Brakes finally taste play-off glory with a 2-1 victory over Hitchin Town, a late equaliser and a red card for the visitors taking the game to extra time before a spectacular winner from top scorer Courtney Baker-Richardson. Icing was added to the cake as the Birmingham Senior Cup was added to the trophy cabinet for the first time in 45 years, a young Wolves side being beaten on penalties at Molineux a 1-1 draw. THE OPPOSITION
THE OPPOSITION We introduce the key players to keep an eye on for Leamington here...
THE TEAM MANAGER Paul Holleran
GOALKEEPERS Tony Breeden Matt Hill
DEFENDERS James Mace Connor Gudger Jamie Hood Richard Taundry
TONY BREEDEN
CONNOR GUDGER
Tony had what he described as probably the best season of his career to date in 2016/17, and the statistics back that up. He played in all but one of the 56 games, and as the last line of a defence that conceded only 32 goals in 46 league games, kept 27 clean sheets in all competitions. Tony will pass 250 appearances this season.
Connor’s contribution to Leamington’s success in 2016/17 was recognised when he picked up the Players’ Player of the Year award at the end of the season. The former Coventry youngster has now passed 100 appearances for the club, and has virtually made the left-back spot his own since joining in February 2015.

JAMIE HOOD
JAMES MACE
Jamie was an integral part of the Brakes defence last season, and followed up winning the Manager’s Player of the Year award in the previous campaign by picking up the Supporters Player of the Year award. Now in his second spell with Leamington having the left the club to spend two seasons with Barwell.
James has been one of the biggest success stories of Paul Holleran’s time in charge of Leamington, and will surely pass 300 appearances for the club this season if he can steer clear of injuries. James Mace was a major part of one of the most watertight defences in non-league football last season.
THE OPPOSITION
JOE CLARKE
KIERAN DUNBAR
JUNIOR ENGLISH
Joe Clarke became Paul Holleran’s first signing of the summer as he captured the experienced midfield man to boost his squad for our National League North return. Clarke spent last season at league rivals Tamworth, making 36 appearances for the Lambs and scoring 1 goal.
Kieran Dunbar joined on a one month loan deal from AFC Telford United. The 20 year old midfielder, who hails from Solihull, had been involved in all of Telford’s league games up until they visited the Phillips 66 Community Stadium on August Bank Holiday Monday, after being signed from Stalybridge Celtic.
Paul Holleran added vast National League experience to his squad early in the summer with the acquisition of Junior English. Junior has played his whole career in the top two tiers of non-league football and spent the 2016/2017 season with Worcester City, making 38 appearances and scoring 3 goals.
KAINE FELIX
KURTIS REVAN
AHMED OBENG
The 22-year-old was released in November by our National League North rivals York, who he signed for in the summer of 2016 after their relegation from the Football League. Kaine found his opportunities limited however, making only 24 appearances and scoring one goal, and was an unused sub in our recent meeting with York.
Kurtis is in his first full season at Leamington, linking up with us in March last season having been released from King’s Lynn Town, and while he was restricted to appearances from the bench he played a pivotal role in our success, setting up both goals in our late win over Walsall in the Birmingham Senior Cup semi-final.
Ahmed enjoyed a successful first season with us, becoming a firm favourite with the fans and scoring 11 goals as he played an integral part in our promotion and Birmingham Senior Cup success. Born in Ghana, Ahmed moved to England with his family as a youngster and was spotted by Rushall Olympic. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Saturday 27 January 2018 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | National League North | Att: 1011 Not many people will have seen this result coming! Ferriby gave a much-improved performance against Chorley, but they fully deserved the point - despite finishing with just 10 men. This was a committed and more composed performance by the Villagers. They battled throughout and made Chorley work hard. Jordan Cooke and Jack Mail, until his substitution, were a very effective pairing at centre-back. Chorley had probably done their homework as they peppered the Ferriby defence with high balls throughout the game. As a tactic, it led to their two goals and created a number of good chances as crosses found attackers in space. But overall, Ferriby defended well, Jack Walters and newly-appointed assistant-manager/player Paul Robson performed well on the outside. Chorley always carried the greater threat and, to be honest, they had the chances to win the game, but that would have been unfair given Ferriby’s overall defensive display. There was little of note in the opening ten minutes, but Chorley went close twice within a minute. Delial Brewster’s shot was deflected for a corner. This was taken by Adam Blakeman and somebody put in a shot that was cleared off the line. Brett Agnew almost put the Villagers ahead after 16 minutes. He cut in from the right and his low shot went under the advancing keeper Matt Urwin and came back off a post. Agnew did, to the surprise of most people put Ferriby ahead after 19 minutes. Robson’s long free-kick was flighted over the defence and Agnew ran on to it to head home his first goal for the club as Urwin came off his line. A minute later Cooke headed Jason Walker’s 12
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme
shot off the line, but the equaliser was not delayed for long. Disappointingly for Ferriby, the goal was another header concede in the goal area as Walker headed in Blakeman’s near-post corner. The rest of the half mainly belonged to the hosts and good chances were wasted. Blakeman and Matty Hughes, both wing-backs had a lot of space down their respective wings and were prominent in many of Chorley’s attacks. Ferriby’s midfield contested well and made life difficult for Chorley. Challenges were strong and Chorley were not always given time to dwell on the ball. The second-half was not, in many ways, too different to the first. Chorley had more territory and possession, but wasted some good opportunities. Ferriby earned this good fortune, something that they have not experienced for much of the season. Chorley took the lead after 56 minutes. Ross Durrant, who made some good saves during the game, dropped Blakeman’s in-swinging corner, allowing Josh O’Keefe to score. Despair for Ferriby’s travelling fans who perhaps felt the floodgates might now open. However, the Villagers did obviously not feel that way. Agnew was desperately unlucky not to equalise with a rasping shot that thundered off the crossbar in the 62nd minute. The rebound reached Jorome Slew and his shot was cleared off the line by Andy Teague with the Ferriby players appealing for a penalty. It seemed more like ballto-hand. Again, Ferriby did not let their heads go down and substitute Jordan Harrison scored his first goal for Ferriby with a low shot after 76 minutes. The equaliser was, in many respects more than Ferriby deserved.
