MANAGER’S COLUMN
STEVE
HOUSHAM
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Solihull Moors to our home this Saturday afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Solihull Moors in the National League. We have nine games to go and its a tough ask, but we are still in with a chance of getting out of the bottom four thanks to a great victory over Woking in our last home game.
and gets a straight red! It spoilt the game and was an uphill struggle from then, but I could not fault the lads for keeping on going and keeping there composure in frustrating circumstances.
The injury list is still the same, but we are slowly getting there, Simon Russell has been to St Georges’ park this week to help with his rehab and is doing very well. We still could get to see Simon
I thought it was a game we really deserved to win, I was very disappointed with there goal, it was not very sporting at all, but we dug deep and I said to the players the good guys get their rewards and we did just that. We then travelled to Bromley looking for our third victory on the bounce. We started the game OK, but it was affected by some strange decisions again. The first talking point was an elbow on Reece Thompson, which got punished with only a yellow card. Then two minutes later Taron Hare goes in with a 50/50 tackle
We now move on to today’s game against Solihull Moors who, like us, came up last season and they have had a great season sitting comfortably in mid table so its going to be a tough game, but one we need to go out and give our all to try and get the three points.
back on the pitch before end of season. Keep up your great positive support and enjoy the game, but also keep. Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE VISITORS...
SOLIHULL MOORS
Entering the realms of must-win fixtures, North Ferriby United host Solihull Moors in a crucial fixture in the National League... The gap to safety stands at six points and North Ferriby need to bounce back from their 3-0 defeat against Bromley at the first time of asking. The Villagers entertain Solihull Moors, who have acquitted themselves well in their new division. The Moors currently sit in 15th place and are in no real danger of relegation, having amassed 45 points from their 36 games. The reverse fixture saw Solihull claim a 2-0 victory, with goals Akwasi Asante putting in a man-of-the-match display

firing in both goals. The away side come into this fixture in mixed form, having picked up back-to-back draws with Braintree Town and Dover. They did, however, fall short against Wrexham and Woking, with a 1-0 win over Bromley sandwiched in between. If Ferriby fans can take heart from anything it’s that Solihull Moors away from isn’t the best. The club have won just five times away from home, but the side have enjoyed seven draws over the course of the season.

CLUB HISTORY
CLUB HISTORY
SOLIHULL MOORS Solihull Moors FC is a merger between the former Solihull Borough and Moor Green clubs. With both clubs struggling to secure gates big enough to sustain the two teams, the merger of both seemed an obvious way forward and formed in the summer of 2007, Solihull Moors Football Club became one of the youngest clubs in senior English football. Bob Faulkner, the Moor Green manager was given the job to take the new club forward, but Borough Boss Mickey Moore would return in the new club’s hour of need. The campaign proved a struggle with the team rarely out of the bottom six in the league table. Survival was confirmed after the 40th league game of the season with a memorable 2-1 victory at Blyth Spartans on the penultimate Tuesday of the season. Eight new signings greeted the start 2008/09 season, but it soon proved to be a struggle with only two points being gained from the first five games. In truth, it was the away form which kept the Moors sucked in at the wrong end of the table with only 16 points being collected away from Damson Park. Keeper Danny Crane, the enormous central defender Liam Daly and striker Jake Edwards did, however, suggest that the tide was turning but nevertheless Solihull finished in 16th position, with a better points total than the previous season, so progress of some sort was made. The 2009/10 campaign saw another poor start despite summer signings which on paper looked good. By mid September Moors
were languishing in 21st place. Bob Faulkner brought in 10 more players to stem the tide and a wonderful run between mid January and mid March saw the team up to a healthy 13th in the league. It was all to little avail, however, as by the end of a gruelling season Moors were again back in 17th position having gained only 3 more points in the final 7 games of the season. By the start of the 2010/11 season, our manager of 25 years, had put together the best by far Moors team we had seen. Maintaining a healthy position for the first half of the season, we were all shattered when Bob Faulkner sadly passed away in February. Amazingly this galvanised the team and with Mickey Moore stepping up to fill the empty void the Moors went from strength to strength and with 8 games to go were in the play off places. It was emotional for us all and with a small squad – the momentum slipped and we missed out by 4 points. During the summer break before the 2011/12 season Mickey Moore decided to take up an offer from Mansfield Town and Marcus Bignot, ex Crewe, Bristol Rovers, QPR and Millwall was announced as his replacement a week later. He inherited a youthful squad but the spark was missing and having won no pre season friendlies, we lost the first seven games of the season. Using his connections in the game, Marcus brought in several new players, and the tide began to turn, so much so that by January the possibility of the play offs seemed achievable. However, it proved impossible to maintain the
momentum and by the end of the season the club finished just one point above the drop zone. 2012/13 saw a blend of youth and experience but with only one win the first six outings, manager Bignot brought himself out of retirement for the visit to Droylsden and Moors took all three points in a 4 – 2 scoreline. By mid season eyes were cautiously cast at the play off positions although by April we were four places adrift of the mark but a creditable ninth league position. 2013/14 saw most of the previous team stay and were joined by seven quality players from the Midlands for what was another good season. The team finished eighth in the league. 2014/15 Marcus Bignot decided to run with the nucleus of the previous seasons. Just like the previous campaign results after Christmas were disappointing and the team finished 12th in the league. 2015/16 saw 11 new signings with Vanarama National League experience. We went on an unbeaten run that lasted into December and remained unbeaten away throughout the whole season. Having flirted around the top of the table throughout the first half of the season we started the second half as league leaders after taking six points off Nuneaton over the Christmas / New Year holiday period and there we stayed winning the title three weeks before the end of the campaign. LEAGUE REVIEW Forest Green Rovers recovered from last weekend’s set-back to return to second place in the National League table following a 2-1 win at Gander Green Lane, against a Sutton United side who are now looking nervously over their shoulder at the drop zone. It was a mixed night for Forest Green’s Mark Ellis.
were held to a goalless draw by a battling Torquay United outfit at the Launa Windows Stadium.
After the U`s had started the game well, Ellis headed the visitors in front from a corner in the 32nd minute.
The visitors travelled the Cheshire without a defeat since January and on the back of a six-game winning run.
And less than 3 minutes later, striker Christian Doidge made the most of a mistake by on-loan goalkeper Will Puddy to double Rovers` lead. Despite plenty of second half pressure, and a late red card for Ellis for denying a goalscoring opportunity after he brought down Max Biamou on the edge of the penalty area, Sutton`s only reply came in the 5th minute of stoppage time through sub Kieron Cadogan. Tranmere Rovers missed the opportunity to move level on points with Forest Green and slip above the Daggers into third place when they

Fifth-placed Gateshead were also held to a draw on Tuesday as Macclesfield Town held the in-form Tynesiders to a 1-1 Moss Rose stalemate.
But after a first half generally bossed by the Silkmen without managing to penetrate a solid-looking Gateshead backline, the deadlock was finally broken 15 minutes from time when the visitors` Manny Smith slotted into an empty net after Macclesfield `keeper Scott Flinders had saved Paddy McLaughlin`s initial effort. But 8 minutes from time John McCombe grabbed his second goal of the season with a powerful header past James Montgomery. That draw meant Dover Athletic could have returned to the top five
with a win at Meadow Park against a Boreham Wood side who came into the game without a win in nine matches. But Luke Garrard`s side comprehensively ended that run with a stunning 5-0 win. However, Dover came the closest to scoring in the opening 45 minutes, but Joe Healy`s effort from the edge of the area hit the underside of Grant Smith`s goal and bounced to safety. Eleven minutes into the second period, it was Wood who drew first blood when he lobbed Dover `keeper Steve Arnold. Ricky Shakes then doubled the home side`s lead in somewhat controversial fashion when he took the ball off Arnold when the number one claimed he had full possession of it. On 73 minutes though, Wood put the game to bed when Shakes set up Andrade for his second of the evening. Shakes was certainly the talk of the terraces as he went on to complete his hat-trick with goals in the 83rd and 86th minutes, both times finishing off breakway attacks.

STANDS Another vital week in the relegation fight, North Ferriby fan Sam Shepherd talks about today’s importance... Ferriby’s last home game saw them secure successive wins, as they followed up their away win at Guiseley, with a 2-1 victory over fellow strugglers Woking. Jake Skelton opened the scoring early on and, despite Woking getting an equaliser late in the first half, the Villagers were not to be denied.
Steve Housham was incensed and was sent to the stands for his protests. With a man advantage, Bromley were always likely to get a goal and, once

Reece Thompson combined well with Robbie Tinkler, before curling a first-time shot into the bottom corner. Despite a few nervy moments Ferriby held on for another important win in their bid to survive. Steve Housham’s side travelled to Bromley last week full of confidence, but they were brought abruptly back down to earth by the South-London side. Curtis Bateson pulled out through injury which was a blow, especially as it looks like he may well miss the rest of the season. The game didn’t start well as Taron Hare was given a straight-red card for what some saw as a 50/50 challenge. The Ferriby management team were not happy and, when an alleged elbow from a Bromley player went unpunished later in the first half,

the first one went in, there was no way back for Ferriby. They were beaten 3-0 and suddenly the task of avoiding relegation looked like a mountain to climb again. The Villagers are now six points from safety, so a win today is absolutely imperative. Today we welcome Solihull Moors who won the National League North title last season. Ferriby have had some good battles with Solihull in recent seasons, especially last year when Ferriby produced one of their best performances of the season to record a 3-1 away win.
successful first season at this level and sit comfortably in mid table, seven points clear of the relegation zone. Whilst no team will be metaphorically on the beach at this stage with nine games to go, Ferriby have to target games against sides in mid table who can’t make the playoffs and probably won’t be relegated. If Ferriby’s survival bid is to continue they have to get a win today and hopefully Steve Housham can pick them up after last week’s defeat. Enjoy the game! Sam
