CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Brighlingsea FC this Saturday afternoon and hope after their journey they enjoy the hospitality available and after hopefully an enjoyable match they have a safe journey home. Of course it is an important match for both teams even if for totally different reasons and, after hopefully an enjoyablse it will Mlub I can get matters resolved that will allow Scott to return sooner than later to play the sport he loves. Well here we are back home after our travels of last week when playing once again a strong and organised Heybridge Swifts side. If we had taken our chances in the first half and organised our defence correctly we could have gone in at half-time 2-0 up, but it was not to

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

be and we came away losing 3-0. To be quite honest I fully appreciate that this type of display is totally the responsibility of my management team to deal with, but as the chairman and also a supporter it is not the type of display I want to watch or will accept as satisfactory for a squad of our depth and experience. It has been well documented by third party rumours, and genuine statements made by myself through my pages within the matchday programme recently that this will be our last season running any of our football operations out of SCT at Bayliss Avenue. So I have decided to keep all the supporters aware of any updates as they are happening, although

at this time even though I have negotiated and signed a 5-year ground share agreement with a local football club that will allow our first-team to play at their stadium. I am not, as was my intention today, allowed to advise you formally until the Isthmian League board of directors have given their final approval at this month’s board meeting, even though they had given provisional agreement subject to sight of the signed documentation in December. I am very surprised and annoyed at their stance, but as always we must not antagonise the board as it will certainly only have negative consequences. So unfortunately I will not formally be able to advise you until the end

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

of the month the earliest so please await. At the same time, I have been reviewing all the club operations and have come to the conclusion that if the club is to survive we need to do something more than just finding a new home. I have therefore, given instructions for a professional company to review the current operations and then suggest how we can operate more efficiently as well as being cost conscious, and their immediate comment was that I should consider re-branding the football club as they feel the move would be a very convenient and beneficial time for the club to consider such options. So after careful considerations I have given them the go ahead to prepare a report with their suggestions, once prepared and I have digested the content I will make the final decision, but listening to these professionals positive comments I must say it makes great sense to consider such options. The timetable for the initial rebranding will be late February/ early April, so watch this space, I know those people that have been around the club for years and always given their time free to the club during this time may be worried about change, but I honestly believe that without this re-branding I am throwing my money away whilst I am financing this fine old club, therefore there is no other option. You will have heard that we started

our own apprenticeship football academy at Long Lane Kid Brooke in January 2017. I am pleased to announce that this started with a cohort of around 26-28, but now at the end of January we have nearly 40 cohorts employed on the scheme, so well done to Darren and Ian for their efforts with this scheme. And yes if you know of anyone that would like to join the oneyear scheme and get paid ÂŁ100 per week make contact as per the details as shown within this matchday programme. Remember this is a new type of football apprenticeship scheme for football clubs, and has generated a lot of interest and I know is being currently watched by many other clubs who I feel would like to be able to run such a scheme themselves. Finally, today I want the current season Ttcket holders not to be worried about the future due to our pending move, you will not be forgotten and I will do everything that is practical to ensure you will still have the opportunity to continue supporting this fine old club. There will be a separate press release covering my thoughts on this matter within the next few weeks, and I hope you will see how genuine and fair I have been. I hope you enjoy the match Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW A warm welcome back to Bayliss Avenue this afternoon to all of our supporters… I wish I could put my finger on why in the past few weeks we’ve slipped back into the bad habits that we had before Christmas. Last weekend was a disappointing defeat away at Heybridge where we gave them two of the three goals and, yet

again, we should have been in front before they scored. Having said that I really expected more from our performance – we’ve got eleven games left which leaves us thirty three points to play for, and so we’ll keep going until it is mathematically impossible for us to reach the play-offs. Who knows what could happen

if we can go on another run over the coming weeks? There’s definitely still something to keep playing for, and you have to remember that there’s next year to look at as well… And so it’s important that we bounce back today against a team who are flying at the moment. Brightlingsea had a great result last weekend. But as I’ve said so many times

“We’ll keep going until it is mathmatically impossible for us to reach the play-offs!” 06

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

MANAGER’S NOTES

this season, the results in this league this year have been so unpredictable, and so we’ll just continue to concentrate on who we’re playing rather than looking at other results. We’ve lost a few on the spin after our great run in December, but in our last couple of home games we’ve done reasonably well – we should have got something from Norwich United and then beat Ware – and we’ll be looking to continue that today. Now that we’re being able to train twice a week is a bonus as it will allow more recovery

time between games as we’ve no more scheduled midweek games between now and the end of the season. It helps too with new players coming in to get them used to us. We’ve had a few going out in the last few weeks, and I’m still looking at bringing one or two in. That said, I’m happy with the squad that we’ve got with competition at every position which is something that I’ve had at every club I’ve managed. So having a Tuesday and a Thursday session for the rest of

the season will be a big help to us and hopefully help us to push on up the league. Finally it’s been a big week for the chairman as he celebrated his 70th birthday! Hopefully we’ll be able to provide him with a good end to his celebrations and get three points this afternoon – HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHAIR! See you in the Mead Bar after the game as ever, Cheers Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Good afternoon everyone, welcome to SCT for today’s Ryman League match against Brightlingsea Regent, I hope that everyone involved with the club enjoys their brief stay with us. With no more midweek matches scheduled for our first-team our last match against Heybridge Swifts last Saturday saw us produce a poor performance. The opening 15 minutes we looked really good and we had Heybridge on the back foot, but again we failed to take a couple of chances we had created and an opportunist

goal against the run of play set the tone for the rest of the match and Heybridge ran out deserving winners in the end. Today’s match sees us entertain high-flying Brightlingsea, who enjoyed a victory last week against the League leaders Maldon & Tiptree, that has kept them very much in the mix for a play-off place, so I would expect a really tough match here today to keep their momentum going. We have no new arrivals this week at the club however, new signing Ollie Bowles seems to have settled

in well and I think he will go from strength-to-strength as he plays more matches for us. Tom O’Connor came on as sub last week at Heybridge, following a short lay-off with injury which was nice to see. Next Saturday we are back on our travels when we visit Dereham for another Ryman League fixture. Enjoy today’s match. Dave Joy Club Secretary

THE OPPOSITION

THE OPPOSITIO

N

BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT

Thamesmead Town host Brightlingsea Regent to Bayliss Avenue hoping to bounce back from a 3-0 away defeat to Heybridge Swifts last weekend.

By no means will this be a straightforward game, with Regent flying-high in the division. The club sit second place, but should they win their games in hand, the club will be sitting top of the table. If the last meeting between the two sides

14

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

is anything to go by, this fixture should be a cracker. Back in October Regent ran out 4-3 winners, but found themselves 3-1 down after Thamesmead scored via Scott Kinch, Paul Vines and Aaron Rhule, before late goals from Aaron Condon (2) and Jake Turner secured a dramatic victory. A home win for the Mead could see them climb above Witham Town, while a three-point haul for Brightlingsea could see them close the gap on table-topping Maldon & Tiptree.

CLUB HISTORY Early league action saw Brightlingsea playing their football in the Essex & Suffolk League, and virtually one hundred years on the current team compete in the same competition. Records state that in the season 1908/09 Brightlingsea Town won the 2nd Division title with the Army Service Corps runners-up. Football was keenly contested in the 1920’s with the town boasting other teams as well as The Town team, and a junior team also entered competition as well as a United eleven. Games were played on Bell Green an area now known as Bellfield Close, before the recreation ground in Regent Road became the regular home venue for the teams. The current pavillion was in those days double tiered and even in those early days a real atmosphere was generated especially for the local derbies against Wivenhoe & Gt Bentley. A United team moved to the current North Road site in the 1920’s, whilst the other main Brightlingsea team namely Athletic and nicknamed “The Tics” continued to play on the rec. The game continued to flourish in the forthcoming years and plenty of successful seasons kept the now United team collecting a number of cups & trophies. We have the word “bung”being bandied about in this year 2007, but in the pre-war years the local agents were busy recruiting any army personnel stationed at Colchester barracks, to travel to the town and

wear a United shirt.

Moderate success during the 50’s & 60’s saw United continue to enjoy their football in the Essex & Suffolk League, before a move to the newly formed Essex Senior League in 1971 saw a new challenge for the club. These early years saw competitive league fixtures against teams such as Billericay, Heybridge, Witham & Maldon, an indication of the standard required to compete at a higher level. The club enjoyed some successful seasons during the 70’s & 80’s winning back to back Championships and League Cups under the management of Jackie Parkinson and in the later seasons current BUF&SC viceChairman Steve Dowman was the man at the helm. A then major step was undertaken in 1990 when the club moved to the Jewson Eastern Counties League. A grey day on the 25th August 1990 saw them start their new era with an away match at Yaxley, almost into Leicestershire, where the team fought out a nil nil draw. The first Jewson League line up was as follows, L Pentney, S Howe J March, R Schultz, G Higgleton, W Ward, R Woodall, C Dines, P Frost, T French, G Staines, subs were P Daley & P Carter. This proved a difficult period for the club although a brief experience in the Premier Division provided some notable fixtures & results. The spiralling costs of travelling, match officials and general expenses were proving difficult to maintain. The

THE OPPOSITION

longest serving manager in this period was local personality Frank Thompson who competed well with the limited resources and is still plying his trade with Arlesford. Again decisions were made at the club, and at the end of the 2001/02 season they left the Jewson League and returned to the Essex & Suffolk Border League, now completing a full circle. The final Jewson fixture was on the 25th April 2002 when a 5-1 defeat ensued at Somersham, the goal scored by J Chatters. The line up for that day was G Wood, D Wilson, D Booker, J Morris, S Gove, G Salmon, T Chatters, G Staines, M Simkin, D Saunders, J Chatters, with subs T Payne, B Weeford, D Allen, R Meadows. Back in the Border League the new season opened on 17th August with a 3-2 defeat at Hatfiled Peverel with the United line up R Meeking, J Reynolds, D Marks, N Turner, W Saunders, J Wilde, D Saunders, J Walters, M Wheeler, D Razor, K Welsh, subs were J Chatters, J Baebone, G Fisher with the goals from N Turner & W Saunders. Once again another chapter opened for the club when the amalgamation developed with the successful Regent Park Rangers set up, which now sees an umbrella of some 18 teams from 7 year olds to the senior team giving football to players & spectators no doubt for another one hundred years. Brightlingsea United FC and Regent Park Rangers FC amalgamated at the start of 2005/06 season to become Brightlingsea Regent Football Club.

Good afternoon and here’s wishing Tommy and the lads to three points today. Our academy boys have been up against it lately and unfortunately have been conceding far too many goals . It’s not been for the want of trying and the lads have been improving all the time under Gary’s watchful eye, but they still have to tighten up in all departments to see the results improve . Four of our apprentices , Lennie Laker , Kallum Crooks- Parkes , Nathan Mpungu and Rilwan Odaramile were drafted into the academy for our game last Wednesday Dulwich Hamlet and I will update you on how they did in my next programme

notes. I met with an old colleague of mine this week regarding the running and setting up of the pre- academy. He has been involved with Dartford FC and their preacademy and we are now moving forward and will be arranging some trials for certain age groups in the very near future. WARE Smith (5)

The Mead came from behind to record their first win in five games as Ellis Brown’s glorious late goal sealed the points. After the visitors scored with the game’s first attack, Paul Vines thought he’d levelled almost immediately as he headed home debut making keeper Ollie Bowles’ long clearance only for referee Butcher to make the first of a number of interesting decisions by ruling out the goal. Vinesy though wasn’t to be denied and on the stroke of half time rolled home his 20th goal of the season from the spot after Brownie had been fouled. The home side had the better of the second half with Alex Teniola and Joe Vines both going close before Brownie’s moment of brilliance as he cut in from the right to strike a wicked swerving drive into to net. The visitors, who are still anxiously glancing over their shoulders at the wrong end of the table, threw everything into trying to get a point with their best chance falling to Appiah who drew the very best out of Ollie who spread himself brilliantly to block.

The gaffer was naturally delighted. “I thought we were the better team,” he told us, “we made hard work of it, but kept knocking and knocking and got our just desserts in the end! We’ve stopped the rot and we just have to make sure that we take it into next month and have a good February now.” “I thought it was going to be a frustrating game as there was nothing wrong with the goal (that was disallowed) and then after that I thought we could have had a penalty you do start to think but we’ve cracked on and Ellis have come up with a bit of quality after he’d had a quiet game, and I’m pleased for him but overall delighted that we’ve got three points.”

Ware took the lead with their first attack when Smith slid the ball wide of the advancing Ollie from a long ball meaning that the keeper’s first main task was to pick the ball out of his net. Vinesy then appeared to head home his 20th goal of the season when he beat a defender to a long clearance, but the official had other ideas. With Ware sitting deeper and deeper, the Mead kept probing, and were eventually rewarded when Vinesy did net his 20th of the season albeit from the spot. save out of Behcet as the keeper grabbed the ball from under the bar. The second period was a tale of the Mead probing and Ware looking to catch the home side on the break. Alex headed over from Jay Porter’s cross before Joe headed over Greenie’s corner. The Mead finally went in front ten minutes from time when Brownie cut inside from the right to fire home with ten minutes left. The ball swerved viciously in front of the keeper who actually looked wrong footed as the shot came in. Indeed it was strike that drew special praise from the Gaffer. Tommy told us, “That’s what I expect from Ellis Brown. Ellis Brown in honesty shouldn’t be playing here! He’s come in and we’ve had a frank discussion – I’m not daft enough to think that he wants to play in Ryman North given the experience that he’s had at Dartford – I still think he can do a lot, lot more. He’s come in and today he’s scored a great goal. But he’s got a lot more in his locker and if he helps us and it helps him, it’s a win, win all round! There’s still a lot more to come from Ellis Brown as well.” Ware desperately looked for an equalizer and almost immediately Ollie made a brilliant spreading block to deny Appiah as he raced clear. The Mead goal had a narrow escape as the ball flashed across the face of goal before Rose headed over from a second corner in quick succession after the first one had resulted in a great scramble. The Mead almost cemented the win in stoppage time when Jay’s late drive fizzed past the post but shortly after the victory was sealed with the final whistle.

JEFF’S MARCH

JEFF’S MARCH First there was the March to the Arch; then came Men United, and now it’s the turn of the March for Men as the football world continues its support to raise money for the research into Prostate Cancer… and as before its

down to one man… Jeff Stelling is at it again! After his March to the Arch raised more than £420,000 for Prostate Cancer UK, he’s doing it all again in June this time aiming to raise £500,000

on his March for Men – 15 walking marathons in 15 days from St James’ Park, Exeter to St James’ Park, Newcastle. Prostate Cancer UK Chief Executive Angela Culhane, said: “Ignoring prostate

cancer will not beat it. But Jeff’s epic efforts have helped wake men up to the need to take action. “Thanks to all of our fundraisers, we can fund more ground-breaking research to fight back against the disease. It will also help us provide

dedicated support and information to men and their families and make prostate cancer a disease the next generation of men need not fear.” Whilst sadly not on Jeff’s route, and after seeing so many footballing people wearing the “Prostate Cancer” pin badge, we’re delighted to say that we have a supply of the badges for sale right now available behind the Bar in “The Mead Bar” where you will also find a collecting pot that’s just right for your loose change after that round of drinks or cup of tea or coffee…

“Referee’s Assessor” – two words that strike fear into many football fans! But what exactly do these figures in the stand actually do?

been the target of criticism from players & spectators who understandably have a limited understanding of the role of the referee.

We approached a recent such visitor to Bayliss Avenue with that question, and we’re delighted to say that we received a reply from “The Watcher”…

“Those who criticise referees find it hard to be objective regarding a referee who makes decisions which are not given in favour of their team.

“On match days when a match observer enters a football club it is not unusual to feel an undertone of resentment from some club members. “This ‘resentment’ is based upon a feeling by some that the official will referee differently because the match observer is present. “A match referee has always

22

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

“The referee is in a difficult position as every correct decision will meet disapproval from those who only see the decision has gone against their team. “In other words, half of all the decisions in a match will be awarded against one of the two competing teams either their own team or the opposition team.

“The players and spectators need to remember that the referee makes upwards of 150 decisions in a match. When these decisions are measured for accuracy only a very few may be two or three of the 150 decisions are not accurate. “The match observer is present at a game to try to help the referee develop & improve his performance to help the game of football to improve. Referees have coaches & match observers to help them to achieve a higher level of performance. “Regarding the role of the match observer I hope the following will shed some light on why a match observer is appointed to attend a game of football. The observer scheme consists of a team of observers,

THE WATCHER

appointed and managed by the Football Association. “The Observer’s role is to provide match day support to referees and assistant referees through offering advice to support their ambitions to maximize personal potential. “The principles of the scheme are quite straight forward really. There’s is immediate feedback after the game focusing on the priority strengths and development areas. It provides officials with written confirmation indicating their strengths and areas for

development based upon the current reporting method for referees and assistant referees. “It gives an evaluation of the level of performance seen through performance review marking. It’s absolutely critical that observers recognise that the mark and copies of reports are a major factor of influence when considering progress for career development for both referees and assistant referees. “This process provides officials first-hand information from experienced observers, allowing match officials to

continue to develop and improve their performance. It also provides an independent performance evaluation of match officials. “In closing, I hope that this article gives you a little more insight into the role of the match observer. So, please the next time you spot a match observer at a game understand that the he is there to help the referee to improve which in turn will improve the enjoyment of everyone involved in our great game.” THE WATCHER
