Curzon Ashton
CLUB HISTORY Curzon Ashton FC was formed in 1963 following the amalgamation of two clubs, Curzon Road and Ashton Amateurs. The newly formed club joined the Manchester Amateur League, winning the title twice and finishing runners-up in their first three seasons. A step forward took them into the Manchester League, and after a period of consolidation a string of honours followed in the early 1970’s. In 1977-78 they took the title by storm, winning a league and cup double and in 1978/9 Curzon become founder members of the Cheshire League Division Two, winning promotion at the first attempt. Managers then quickly came and went with Steve Waywell being their fourth appointment in the space of 12 months when he was appointed in October 1987. Such were the on-field problems that relegation was only avoided when the League was expanded from 19 to 22 clubs. Waywell remained with the club until February 1993. The Club were competitive in the NPL First Division, but after they reached their highest finish of fourth in 1995-96, the following season, problems on and off the field beset Curzon, and their ten
year stay in the NPL ended. Terry McLean was handed the reins at the start of the season, only to resign in September. Denby was placed in charge of team affairs. Denby remained until just after the New Year. Coyne took charge on a temporary basis but he was unable to halt the clubs slide and with it relegation for the first time in their history. The club remained in the Second Division until under the guidance of Joe Murty they gained promotion at the end of season 1999/2000, although Murty was relieved of his duties in June 2000, and Gary Lowe was appointed. Lowe led the club to the Final of the Worthington League Challenge Cup before moving into their magnificent Tameside Stadium for the start of season 2005/06. It was the beginnings of an upturn in Curzon’s fortunes and after previous repeated attempts to return to the NPL they had to wait until season 2006/07 to benefit once again from the re-structure. Season 2007-2008, and the first back in to UniBond League, saw the club reach the promotions play-offs after leading the First Division North for most of the season. Unfortunately they were knocked out of the play-offs by Skelmersdale United.
North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
In the 2008-2009 season the club reached the Play-off Final but were beaten by Newcastle Blue Star who then resigned from the UniBond League in late June. Season 2009-2010 the club reached the Play-offs for the third consecutive season but were again beaten in the semi-finals by the eventual winners Colwyn Bay Season 2010 saw the Once again the club reached the Play-offs for the fourth consecutive season and were again beaten by the eventual winners Chorley. The club appointed John Flanagan as Gary Lowe’s successor and would start the 2011-2012 season building a new team. In his first season in change John Flanagan took the club to the Play-off Final where they were beaten by Witton Albion. A team rebuild in the summer of 2013 saw the team get off to a flyer and they again had a magnificent start to the season, going 16 league games undefeated. This was the run which took them to the league title. Season 2014-2015 saw Curzon compete at their highest ever level of the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division, and they confounded the odds when the squad reached the play-offs and, on another never to be forgotten day, beat Ilkeston 1-0 in the final and thus confirming their place in the National League North.

MATCH REPORT 0 3
CURZON ASHTON NORTH FERRIBY UNITED King (21,51), Topliss (81)
November 14, 2015 | National League North | Tameside Stadium | Att: 362 Ferriby deservedly won a game that was played in constant rain throughout. On an already very wet pitch, conditions became more difficult for both teams.
Considering he conditions, this was an entertaining game. Curzon played most of the game with ten men after Ryan Brooker was sent-off after 23 minutes for a high challenge on Josh Wilde. The Villagers were already 1-0 ahead by this point. The first quarter of an hour saw each keeper have to make a single save. Curzon’s Hakan Burton saved with his legs from Danny Emerton. At the other end, Tom Nicholson produces a flying fingertip save to deny Matthew Warburton. Ferriby took the lead after 21 minutes. Danny Clarke held-up the ball on the edge of the area before releasing Liam King who advanced and slid the ball past Burton. Two minutes later the referee had no hesitation in showing a red card to Brooker for his challenge on Wilde. This served to make Curzon’s task more difficult but they continued to play some good passing football throughout the game. The Villagers doubled their lead in the 51st minute Josh Wilde’s high ball into the Curzon penalty area
caused problems. The ball eventually fell to King who fired home his fifth goal in three games. Adam Bolder saw Burton save a shot at the second attempt as Ferriby had control but were not overly threatening near goal. Ashton struggled to create opportunities when they did press forward and it was 71 minutes before Nicholson had to produce a save. Curtis Bateson and Clarke had shots blocked before Sam Topliss clinched the game for Ferriby. Tom Denton’s header released Danny Emerton on the left and his cross to Topliss was hit home first-time. Topliss was denied a second goal when his effort was ruled out for off-side against Clarke who was moving away from the goal and the ball and did not seem to be interfering in any way. Curzon launched a brief assault in the final five minutes as they searched for a consolation goal. They forced Nicholson in to two saves but could not find a way through. Ferriby defended very well in the conditions with the back-four rarely putting a foot wrong i testing conditions.

VIEW FROM THE
SID ELINE S
Frustration and missed opportunities in recent weeks for Ferriby but Sam Shepherd believes a win today could open the league up again... I always try to look on the bright side when it comes to Ferriby because one bad performance is usually followed by a very good one however this hasn’t been the case in the last few weeks and that is slightly worrying at this stage of the season. The disappointing away defeat to Worcester was followed up by an equally frustrating defeat to Harrogate when Ferriby created chances and hit the woodwork twice but at the end of the day weren’t clinical enough. Then in midweek Ferriby travelled to strugglers Hednesford Town and grabbed a point from the jaws of defeat thanks to a 95th minute penalty from Liam King. Don’t get me wrong Ferriby are still very well placed in the table but a couple of weeks ago we had plenty of breathing space
from Boston and Nuneaton but now they are breathing down our necks. Harrogate came to Ferriby and looked very solid throughout. Their defence was marshalled by former Guiseley centre back Danny Ellis who is one of the best defenders I have ever seen in Non-League football. They remained a tight defensive unit throughout and that made it difficult for Ferriby to create chances. When Ferriby did create openings they weren’t clinical enough. In the first-half two players got in each other’s way when one would have had a tap in and then Wayne Brooksby hit the bar from 4 yards out. After the break Brooksby hit the woodwork again when he curled a shot round the keeper but not inside the post.
North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
Several crosses were headed high or wide and Ferriby failed to create enough clear cut chances from good attacking positions. It was a frustrating day all round because Harrogate were restricted to a few chances but when one came they took it and with it the vital 3 points. Today we face Curzon Ashton in what is now a must win game in my opinion. Ferriby are not a bad side and every team goes through patches of poor form. We all know how good a manager Billy Heath is and I expect him to have Ferriby fired up to deliver a much better performance today and if that happens I’m sure we will come away with the win. A win today and a couple of results going our way would totally change the league table again so all is not lost. Enjoy the game, Sam
