THE MANAGER

TERRY

SPILLANE

Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome to the SCT to our friends from Dereham who have made the long journey south from near Norwich. Last weekend saw us play against Barkingside at home on Good Friday & a local derby away v Phoenix Sports. In both games there were big decisions that went against us. Against Barkingside we started very well - in fact it was probably our best start for quite a while. As early as the 5th minute we had a clear goal overruled by the officials when they decided that the ball did not cross the line and unbelievably lightning was to strike twice as within minutes exactly the same situation arose and once again the officials came to the rescue of Barkingside. Theo then had a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside!! At the time I thought he was clearly onside which was later confirmed (as was the two previous goals that were denied us) on Elliot’s match highlights - if you haven’t seen them, go to our website or to YouTube and they’ll be there before the end of the weekend.

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Anyway, to the players credit they did not let their frustration effect their performance and in my opinion it was only a matter of time before we made our dominance pay off. We took the lead through Theo on 60 mins who took Vinesy’s pass in his stride before slotting the ball past the impressive young keeper for Barkingside. We then had a mad 5 minutes & unfortunately for us, Barkingside got the equaliser after poor decision making by a few of the players. They then hit the post as our lads were clearly rattled by them equalising.

at local rivals Phoenix was just as frustrating. We started the game brightly enough and we were keeping the ball very well and limiting Phoenix to a couple of long range efforts that Walks as usual dealt with quite comfortably. We had a bit of a blow after 30 mins when Joe (tight hamstring) had to be subbed; so on came Ben at right back which meant Jack moved across to partner Butts at centre back. I felt that we were in control and had the lions share of possession but we found the opposition defence hard to break down as you’d expect in a local derby with bragging rights up for grabs etc.

We settled down quickly though and once again started to dominate possession. We had numerous chances to get the win but a combination of bad finishing, good goalkeeping and last ditch defending denied us the points we deserved.

It was plain to see that a few of the Phoenix lads were getting quite frustrated as they found it hard to either create an opening or get any sort of possession as our game plan of pressing high up was working a treat.

Our next game on Easter Monday

Around the hour mark, we deservedly

took the lead when Hoppo’s shot was palmed away by the Phoenix keeper straight into the path of the in form Vinesy who made no mistake from 12 yards out. Their frustration boiled over when their number 8 quite viciously kicked Harrison thigh high which lead to a straight red card! Fortunately both sets of players kept their cool as incidents like that can and often do boil over so credit to both teams that it didn’t happen and the game continued to be played in very good spirit. Hard but fair! Phoenix although a player short started to pass the ball a lot better and began to get a bit more possession but I was very confident that we’d see the game out as we were limiting them to a few long range pot shots. With just 3 mins to go their left winger

took the ball to the touchstone and crossed the ball (which was cleared quite easily) unfortunately for us Ben had a rush of blood & made a late challenge!! The referee pointed to the spot straight away and although Walks guessed the right way, Phoenix got a late equaliser. Our support over the two games was once again fantastic so I’d like to thank you all for that. To sum up my feelings over weekend!!! Disappointed? Yes! Defeated? Absolutely not!! There’s still one or two twists and turns yet and as long as we have a chance then we will give it everything we have.

“To sum up my feelings over the weekend! Disappointed? Yes Defeated? Absolutely not! There’s still one or two twists and turns yet”

Belive. Come on you Mead! Terry Spillane First-team Manager

THE BOARDROOM

PAUL

BOWDENBROWN

May I welcome the Officials, Players and Supporters of Dereham FC to our home at SCT this Saturday afternoon, and hope after an enjoyable game and refreshments everyone has a safe journey home. May I also say a hello to all of our season ticket holders, all of you have made this season totally awesome, as it’s great to see families enjoying themselves either on an afternoon or an evening watching their local team, later on within my notes I will advise you of another season ticket initiative but for the u/11s that I am considering putting into operation for next season.

off the bottom our players may have thought they only needed to turn up and 3 points were an automatic result but unfortunately Barkingside came here to play football and proved that they could. There was a very positive part of having our game played on Good Friday rather than the Saturday and that was the crowd some 149 supporters paid to watch the game, being our best league game of this year.

Well here we are, back home after our home match on Good Friday where in my opinion due to some of the players not seeming to have the desire to win resulting in throwing away a possible 3 points and having to be satisfied with only 1 point going on the league table.

So we went to our local neighbours Phoenix FC on Easter Monday knowing, due to results around us going our way on Easter Saturday, that a win would put us 1 point behind fifth place with a game in hand.

Some may be feel this comment to be a harsh but we all know what standard these players can play at and Good Friday was certainly an off day on the pitch. I have always said if you do not concede you cannot lose games, maybe some of the players should understand that, another thought I had was due to the position of our opponents being just

But unfortunately once again we score a goal and then concede in the 87th minute - a penalty, it was a second yellow card for the defender but in my opinion as I was standing only a metre away from the incident there was no need for the action of our player, he would have got away with the second yellow card only for him to use fowl and abusive

06

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

language towards the referee something you can expect them to react to these days as our disciplinary records shows. Whilst mentioning the officials, as I have said in a number of my columns that in my opinion the standard of the officials this season has been very unimpressive and has certainly proved costly both in points and pounds to the club and its players. So once again due to two draws in matches that I feel we could have gained at least 4 points but possibly 6 we still are only 4 points behind the 5th position therefore as a number of teams above us today are playing each other’s we have to keep our minds on the task until it is well beyond our reach but until then I want to see a more positive display by the squad I feel that not only the club deserves it but its supporters too that have this season followed the team home and away these are the people that deserves to see the club do well. As you will have read I have once again agreed to offer for next season

THE BOARDROOM

“All I ask is that you pass the information of the £30 season ticket offer on to all your friends, neighbours and also the Mums and Dads who you meet picking up their children at the school gate or your work colleagues.”

the £30 Season Ticket initiative and I hope more local supporters will take up this very good offer where else would you find such an offer that will allow you and your family to watch and support your football club for around £0.36 pence per match if a family of four take up the offer. So all I ask is that you pass the information of the £30 Season ticket offer on to all of your friends, neighbours and also the Mums and Dads who you meet picking up their children at the school gate, or your work colleagues remember the only condition I ask is that any applicant must live within 5 miles of the Football Ground, come on we have 37 tickets let’s get it over 100 for next season, remember we are a community club whatever people may say we are very much as you are

a part of the community. Well as I have said earlier I am considering as part of our work in the community to offer another initiative and that is to hand out FOC Season Tickets to all children under the age of 11 in all the local primary schools, this will then allow the youngsters to enjoy a game of football and at the same time hopefully it will also allow their parents, cousins, brothers and sisters to join then on their visit to Bayliss Avenue. Now let’s all enjoy our Saturday Afternoon of football and the club thanks you for your continued support. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman & Managing Director

CARLY’S CORNER

CARLY’S

CORNER

In her regular column this year first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list...

Good afternoon all and welcome to our penultimate home game of the season.

returning from a cruciate ligament op last year. A massive achievement for him and a huge boost to the squad.

After a disappointing bank holiday weekend where we only managed to pick up 2 points from 4 the boys are looking to correct the wrongs of last week and take away all 3 points today.

In injury news;

With a Play-off place still up for grabs and both teams today fighting it out for one its set to be a great battle, let’s just hope it’s our boys in the green and white hoops #thamesmeaddagger! Hoppo made his first 90 minutes appearance on Monday since

Vinesy senior was substituted midway through the first half Monday after tweaking his hamstring, we’re hoping this is nothing too serious and shouldn’t keep him out of the side for too long. Tommy Spillane is struggling with a knee problem which is keeping him out of the squad for today’s game. A cut on the head saw Vinesy junior

sporting a pudsey like bandage early on in the game on Monday. I am pleased to say that’s after trip to the hospital and some glue to seal to the gash he will be eligible to play today after not suffering any adverse side effects of the clash. Harrison was struggling earlier on in the week following the late and reckless challenge from one of the Pheonix players which saw him shown a straight red card, we hope to have him fit for today’s game and available for selection. THE UNDER 21S

THE UNDER 21s with Gary Ryan

Good afternoon everyone! Recently, our Under-21 squad journeyed over to Essex to take on a mature looking Billericay Town side who were, like us, in pursuit of league glory. Although on the night we fell to defeat by 4-1, we were well in contention following a 54 minute Ainsley Everett equaliser until secondhalf goals for our hosts gave the scoreline a slightly distorted look. It was heartening, as always, to give debuts to 17-year-old Alfie Day and 19-year-old Jordan Williams, while also welcoming goalkeeper Max Ovenden back to the squad after 9 weeks out through injury. So our hopes of putting further pressure on league leaders AFC Hornchurch may have taken a knock, but it gave me reason to look back with pride on our 5 match winning

10

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

streak leading up to the match, during which we scored 23 goals. When at the start of the season I looked at what appeared to be a threadbare squad. I think a run of only 1 defeat in 10 matches during which we have played some delightful football shows how far we have come this term. On a personal level, we have seen young left-sided player Sam Orisatoki become an established member of the England Schoolboys Under-18 side, starting in the opening 2 matches as the boys compete for the inspiresport Centenary Shield. The Club should celebrate Sam’s outstanding achievement with pride. During this season alone, we have seen the likes of Jeremiah Efe, Elliot Usher, Laurent Mendy, Max Ovenden, Charlie Himbury and Philippe Blaettler promoted to first-team duty, as well as bringing players through the Under

18’s to our squad. It’s also been a pleasure to assist Terry and the first-team management in the rehabilitation of injured players into the senior side, in particular Jack Hopkins who is now fit and ready for action. We now look ahead to next season with the continued support of the clubs chairman, Paul Bowden Brown, in cementing our future as an integral part of the club. To this end, I’m delighted to have added Paul and Glen Taylor to my management team, along with Richard Green to take on Secretarial duties, as we look to gear ourselves up for further progress next year. Best of luck to Terry and the boys today in what should be a cracker of a game. Gary Ryan

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Afternoon everyone, welcome to SCT for our penultimate home game for this season, this afternoon we welcome the players, committee and supporters of Dereham we hope they have had a safe journey here and enjoy their brief stay with us.

We started like a steam train and had four excellent chances in the opening 10 minutes, but then we seem to run out of ideas, we were never going to lose the game but couldn’t see us winning it either.

Not much has changed on the league situation for us mathematically we are still in with a chance of the Play-offs, but we need to start picking up 3 points per game.

Monday saw us go to our local rivals Phoenix Sports, who 48 hours had returned from our visitors today with three hard earned points, again we needed maximum points from this match too.

Last weekend, being Easter, we played two big games, at home on Good Friday to Barkingside who put up a very spirited display and left SCT with a point in their fight to escape relegation for us two home points dropped!

In what turned out to be a nonspectacle as a game we controlled much of it just doing enough, a Paul Vines’ goal had given us the lead and to be fair we looked comfortable enough to hold on to the victory.

Phoenix made a couple of substitutions and the tempo of the game changed we became very much on the back foot and in the final minutes Ben Glasgow gave away a penalty which meant the points were shared again. We have some tough away games coming up but Terry has the personnel to grind out the results that we need, let’s hope we get that little bit of luck that you need sometimes! Enjoy the game today! DEREHAM TOWN

CLUB INFO Nickname: The Magpies Founded: 1884 Ground: Aldiss Park Chairman: Ray Bales Manager: Matt Henman Last Season: 7th

Dereham Town saw their four game winning run come to a grinding halt in a 2-1 home loss against Phoenix Sports. Like Thamesmead, Dereham Town came unstuck against a Sports side in mid-table, their first defeat in eight games. However prior to their loss last time out the club had picked up three points against Romford, Redbridge, Thurrock and Maldon & Tiptree. A win for either side would propel them towards the Play-off places but would likely sit just outside on goal difference. The Mead will have to be at their very best to address a run of two straight draws.

THE OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY

Dereham Town Football Club was founded in 1884, spending many of its early years in the local Norwich District and the Dereham & District Leagues.

from mid-December. Eventual twelfth place in the League equalled the Clubs highest ever finish in the top division.

Until 1965, the Club played in the Norfolk and Suffolk League prior to the formation of the Anglian Combination.

Season 2006/07 was the most successful in the Clubs history to date. The Norfolk Senior Cup was retained with a 1-0 victory over Wroxham, sixth spot in the League was our highest ever.

In 1988-89 Dereham Town was relegated from the Premier Division of the Anglian Combination, thus losing their proud record of being the only Club to have never played outside the Premier Division since the League’s formation in 1965. The following season Premier Division status was regained when the Division One title was claimed.

In March 2008 former Magpies player, Matt Henman, replaced Rob Taylor as manager after captain Adam Gusterson had briefly held the reigns as caretaker manager. Fourth place in the League was achieved with victory over Mildenhall Town in the last match of last season.

December 1996 saw the Club move from its previous home on the Council owned Recreation Ground into the plush surrounding of the new site at Aldiss Park. The Club’s first full season at Aldiss Park (1997/98) saw the dream become reality when Eastern Counties League status was achieved with the club winning a first Anglian Combination Premier Division title. The Club’s opening season in Eastern Counties League football (1998/99) saw the club finish seventh in Division One. The 2000/2001 season saw the firsttime secure promotion to the Jewson Premier Division. Their first season in the Premier Division saw Dereham finish in a creditable 12th position. In the League an inconsistent first-half of the 2005/06 season was followed by an excellent second-half which saw Dereham suffer only three defeats

Season 08/09 again saw a fourth place finish in the Ridgeons Premier Division, a run to the fifth round of the FA Vase and, as in the previous season, a disappointing defeat in the semi-final. Season 09/10 was a good one for the Club despite the First Team having, by their recent high standards, a mediocre campaign eventually finishing tenth in the Ridgeons Premier Division and, for the third consecutive season, falling at the semifinal stage of the Norfolk Senior Cup. In season 2010/11 the Magpies were runners up in the Ridgeons Premier League and won the Norfolk Senior Cup at Carrow Road, defeating a strong Kings Lynn Town side. Season 2011/12 was relatively disappointing with the side finishing in mid table in the League; however the younger sides continued to thrive and hopefully many of these players will be pushing for a first team place

in the future.

However, season 2012/13 saw the hard work of the previous seasons come to fruition when The Magpies achieved their first promotion since 1997/98 when the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Premier Division title was won and, with the necessary ground improvements in place, promotion to the Ryman League was achieved. And with the FA relaxing the criteria for the admission of Reserve sides at step 6 Dereham Town Reserves were voted into the Thurlow Nunn First Division for season 2013/14. The First team experienced three defeats in their first four League matches but soon got to grips with the more physical aspects of step 4, thereafter losing only 10 of the next 42 games, eventually finishing the season in 7th place after briefly sitting in a play-off spot. Season 2014/15 saw further consolidation in the Ryman League with a second successive 7th place finish in Division One North. Having flirted with the play-off places the Magpies were destined to end the season three points adrift of fifth spot. A good run in the FA Cup came to an end at Conference North Boston United. Nevertheless, this was another good season for the Club and bodes well for the future. For our Reserves the season was once more a struggle against physically stronger and more experienced opponents but, as in previous years, the squad produced some fine football without securing the results their play often warranted. And so, onto new challenges…

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD Once again, we’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Throughout the 2015/16 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. Again, we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter, Charlotte, for donating the prize to the club. This year, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. So hang around for a few minutes at the end of the game to see who is the recipient of the Cooper Man of the Match award. 2015/16 SUPPORTERS PLAYER OF THE YEAR

VOTING OPENS TODAY!

Don’t forget your form as every vote counts for your favourite! Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the SCT this first Saturday in April April already??? Seems incredible that we’re into the final month of the season already - doesn’t that Saturday afternoon back in summer 2015 when we welcomed Jersey here seem such a long time ago... Next season’s Season Tickets went on sale on Good Friday and your response has been great. To existing season ticket holders who haven’t yet picked up a renewal form we’ll be putting yours in the post to you very shortly. That said if you want yours today, they’ll be available in the Mead Bar and from the Committee Room this afternoon

and at our last home game of the season in three weeks time... Take care everyone - to our friends from Dereham good luck for the rest of the season and a safe return home, and to all Mead fans don’t forget our last home game of 2015/2016 is to be played on St Georges Day - Saturday 23rd April - at 3:00pm - against Brightlingsea Regent. Don’t forget before then, we’re on the road to Haringey Borough, Maldon & Tiptree and Tilbury - the boys can still reach post season but now they really do need OUR backing to have a chance of getting there - as a world famous chef involved with a Premier League club once declared on the pitch at half

time “C’mon lets be having you!” Remember you can get in touch with the Commercial team on email at commercialttfc@live.co.uk Cheers and c’mon the Mead! Greenie If your company would like to sponsor a forthcoming home game, please see Greenie TODAY or contact him on commercialttfc@live.co.uk or alternatively 07845 751319

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

11

CLEAN SHEET TOTAL

Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom!

ANDY WALKER HAS HELPED HIS SIDE TO COLLECT ELEVEN CLEAN SHEETS ALREADY THIS SEASON
