THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

CHRIS BOLDER

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Southport to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon.

It was a long trip on Tuesday night following Saturday’s big trip to AFC Telford United, these experiences are new to some of our squad members, but ones that will prove invaluable moving forward. It obviously goes down as another defeat, but it’s more about the manner in which we conduct ourselves and I thought that the full squad equipped themselves really well against a very strong, experienced outfit. We have played two games on heavy pitches and been up against at times, so we will look to freshen things up where possible. We have a number of injury doubts, but we do welcome players back into the fold. Jamie Forrester is continuing to

struggle with an ongoing problem that we need to manage, Jordan Deacey has sustained a slight hamstring strain, so that will need assessing and we have Brett Agnew nursing a knee injury which again will need monitoring. All the lads that have come in have shown a fantastic approach to everything thrown at them. We need to remember where these lads have come from and we have to be patient with their development, but the signs are really pleasing. We are going to go through dips in performance, but the pleasing aspect is they are so keen to learn and develop and have the right attitude which is a fundamental requirement. We are always looking at potential options, but we are also keen to keep NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

as much continuity and develop the current group of players, so if the right players become a available then they will be considered. Southport will be another big test for us today and they have some quality players that are really going to test the lads again. Obviously they have a strong front line, especially having the divisions top goalscorer and they are showing good form at the minute. Thank you for your continued support, it is very much appreciated and, hopefully, they are understanding of what is trying to be created and built out there on the field. The players are giving their maximum and each game they are gaining invaluable experiences. Chris Bolder First-Team Manager

SOUTHPORT

After back-to-back 3-0 away defeats, North Ferriby United return to home soil hoping to get a positive result when Southport head to the Eon Visual Media Stadium. Today’s opponents currently sit six places above the Villagers and come into this match on the back of the 3-0 thumping of Gainsborough Trinity. He has been among the leading marksmen in the Vanarama National League North since the season began and it was perhaps fitting that Jason Gilchrist moved to the top of the goalscoring charts with an emphatic demonstration of what

he does best, with a hat-trick last time out. In firing home 21 goals so far this campaign, Gilchrist has shown his worth on a regular basis for Southport, just as he had done with FC United of Manchester, but his exploits here gave the travelling supporters reason to be pleased. Victory for Stockport could see them climb up to 12 depending on results elsewhere. For Ferriby, their battle for survival looks increasing a tall order with each passing week, but the club have been performing well as seen in the recent draws with Leamington and Chorley respectively. THE OPPOSITION

SOUTHPORT

RECENT HISTORY Charged with leading Southport through 2014-15 was Martin Foyle, a vastly-experienced manager in the Conference. Martin’s last appointment was at troubled Hereford United and everyone was looking forward with great anticipation to seeing him pull together a new look squad as Southport looked to push for a play-off spot, but after a string of poor performances and results Martin Foyle left the Club to be replaced by Gary Brabin. Gary returning for a second stint in charge having had a brief spell (49 days) as the boss at the end of the 2007/08 season. However, after just 13 league games in charge, Gary left the club to take up a coaching role at Everton with Gary’s number two, Paul Carden taking over the hot seat. It was to be a shaky start for Paul, but after seven winless games he steered the club to safety, despite an horrendous end of season injury and suspension crisis which saw the club able to field a three man bench at one point. Safety was assured with a surprise home draw against Grimsby when, despite the lack of available players, the best home league game of the season in front of the best gate of the season ended 2-2. Southport had beaten Tamworth after a replay, Football League Dagenham & Redbridge also after a replay and big spending Eastleigh to reach Round Three. Paul Carden lasted 299 days in the managerial hot seat before he left the club by mutual consent after a run of bad results including a disappointing defeat in the FA Cup at Salford. Next to take up the reins was Dino Maamria. Dino oversaw a transformation that saw the club equal its Conference winning run of six consecutive wins lifting the club up to 14th place at one point. However, after just 116 days in charge Dino stood down as manager and he was replaced on a caretaker basis by Andy Bishop. Andy led the club to safety finishing in 16th place and was rewarded with the job on a

permanent basis ahead of the final game of the season. The 16th place finish was the club’s highest placing since 2011/12. The Club faced a difficult set of opening fixtures in 2016/17, but after eight games and just one win Andy Bishop was sacked as manager to be replaced by Steve Burr. In a shake up of the Club’s Board, former manager Liam Watson along with Nigel Allen and Dave Barron were invited to become Directors. Steve lasted 144 days before he was sacked after a run of poor results. The next to take up the reins was Andy Preece whose 15 games in charge saw just two wins and the inevitable relegation confirmed early in April. Our seven year stay in the top flight of Non League football comes to an end with relegation to National North for the 2017/18 season. A record number of defeats ( 27) a record number of players used (50) and a record number of goals against (97) made it a season to forget. Off field turmoil with a fans revolt forcing Chairman Charlie Clapham to stand down and he was followed by Vice Chairman Sam Shrouder and Commercial and Community Director Haydn Preece. In the end the whole of the existing board resigned. It proved to be an eventful close season and as we move into the 2017/18 season there has been a massive rebuild on and off the field. Only one player remained from the 2016/17 season and there is a whole new set up at boardroom level. That player left before the season started. Alan Lewer took up the reins with Mark Wright our Head Of Development. A full scale player recruitment saw a brand new look on the field. After an excellent start to the season the club suffered a loss of form which saw a slide down the table to 16th place. Alan Lewer and Mark Wright left the club and were replaced by Kevin Davies as manager with John Dreyer assisting. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Jack is a really athletic player. He adds height to the side at 6″2 and we’ll be looking to use that. He’s strong and he will lead the line well.

Southport signed midfielder David Lynch for an undisclosed fee from Halifax Town. Signing an 18 month contract, David has featured 13 times in the Vanarama National League from Halifax this term. Tuesday 13th February 2018 | St James Park | National League North | Att: 225 Total confusion reigned before this game. A couple of texts to our match secretary on the coach indicated that the game was on despite the rain. Five minutes from the ground there was a post on social media to say the game had been calledoff by the match referee due to a wet pitch. This was confirmed by an official message from the club as the team coach was a couple of hundred yards from the ground. There was standing water in certain areas of the pitch, but Ferriby manager Chris Bolder and his Brackley counterpart persuaded referee Rob Massey-Ellis to reverse his decision, apparently following consultation with the FA, despite Massey-Ellis feeling the pitch was unsafe. Despite Massey-Ellis’s misgivings, the match kicked off at 8pm. It was a credit to all the players that there was not one poor challenge in the whole game. Players stayed on their feet when making tackles and did not fall over looking for free-kicks at the slightest contact. Credit, too, to the referee for letting the game flow and his overall control. The pitch did cut up in places and the players did splash-up water in certain areas. Brackley adapted better to the conditions in the first-half and Ferriby struggled to make any real progress going forward. Brackley’s James Armson ran the midfield and was well supported by Glenn Walker on the outside. Armson always seemed to find space to receive the ball and rarely wasted a pass. For all their effort, Ferriby found it hard to ease the pressure. The Villagers suffered an early blow when Aaron Williams scored from 18 yards with a low shot following a deflected cross. It was a disappointing way to concede. 12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Brackley dominated the half, but most of their opportunities came in the first 30 minutes. Once again, Ferriby’s defence restricted their opponents to having to shoot mainly from the edge of the area or outside. There is a growing confidence in the back-line which now defends the first-ball better. Equally important, there is a confidence and willingness to play the ball out of defence rather than just hoofing it forward and have it come straight back. It was not a real surprise, however, when Brackley’s control saw them score a second goal after 22 minutes. Ross Durrant did well to parry a powerful drive from the edge of the area, but the ball fell to the unmarked Connor Gudger who fired home from close range. Ferriby played a more positive game in the second-half as the midfield found space and pressed Brackley. It was a more even half in terms of both territory and possession. There was not anything in the way of chances for either side. Brackley’s third goal was the result of a goalmouth- scramble with Armson knocking the ball home. The introduction of Luke Lofts and Sam Ansu, with Jorome Slew moving in to a central striker role for the injured Brett Agnew, gave Ferriby more pace and space going forward. Mention needs to be made of James Piercey who was making his first start for the club following his debut as a substitute at Telford on Saturday. Piercey played well at centre-back alongside Jack Mail. However, the stand-out performance for Ferriby was from Jordan Harrison who was a constant threat down the right throughout the match. He has the willingness, strength and ability to take-on defenders and shows real promise for the future.
