May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Tranmere Rovers to our home this Tuesday evening, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Tranmere Rovers in the National League.

Here we are again and it’s great to have a game so quickly after Saturday’s disappointment. It was, yet again, a game of two halves against Solihull Moors at the weekend. I thought in the first half we was in control, working hard getting balls into the box and then second half we just did not compete or do the jobs we needed to and it was a second half I described as the worst 45 minutes of the season. We want to put that performance right straight away, but it’s not going to be an easy task against a big club like Tranmere, but what we will demand is that we give our all and compete and give everything we have got to get a

THE OPPOSITION

THE VISITORS...

TRANMERE ROVERS

North Ferriby host high-flying Tranmere Rovers tonight hoping to bounce back from the weekend’s loss to Solihull Moors... The Villagers succumbed to a 4-1 defeat at home to Solihull Moors on Saturday, but have a quick turnaround to try rectify the loss.

Tranmere haven’t enjoyed the best of form recently with just one win in their past five matches.

Steve Housham and his side welcome third-placed Tranmere to the Eon Visual Media Stadium who were knocked out of the FA Trophy by Macclesfield Town.

Their last win came at the start of March and was followed by a loss to Barrow, before back-to-back draws with Macclesfield and Torquay.

After an opening leg 1-1 draw, Tranmere were in high hopes that they could beat Town on their own ground, but fell short in a 1-0 loss.

However, prior to that the club enjoyed a superb February, beating Chelmsford and Barrow in the FA Trophy, before a league draw with Bromley was followed by the 2-0 win over Eastleigh.

The Villagers will be wary of a backlash, while similarly they will be hoping to capitalise on their cup disappointment.

4

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

The last time the two clubs met a 93rd-minute goal from Andy Cook was the difference in a 1-0 victory.

MIDFIELDERS

SCOTT DAVIES

MICHAEL IHIEKWE

The tall and commanding goalkeeper arrived at Prenton Park last summer from Fleetwood Town who he had helped to two promotions. Davies began his career at Morecambe, helping them to promotion into the Football League. He spent loan spells with Accrington Stanley and a return to Morecambe.

The former Wolves defender joined Tranmere in the summer of 2014 and quickly established himself as a regular in the starting line-up. He can play in both centre-back and rightback positions and also spent time on loan from Wolves at Cheltenham Town in 2013-14.

Steven Jennings Adam Mekki Jay Harris Darren Stephenson Louis Almond Jack Dunn Jake Kirby Ben Tollitt Lois Maynard

STEVE McNULTY

LEE VAUGHAN

Adam Dawson

The experienced central defender originally joined from League Two Luton Town last season, before putting pen to paper on an 18 month contract with the Club. He has experience of promotions out of this league with both Fleetwood Town and Luton and is a commanding figure in the heart of the defence.

The right-back initially joined Rovers on loan from fellow National League club Cheltenham Town before making it a permanent move in January 2016 after some impressive displays. A solid defender, Vaughan also gets forward well and enjoys the attacking side of the game and is an excellent crosser of the ball. His former clubs include AFC Telford United and Kidderminster Harriers.

THE OPPOSITION

THE DANGERMAN

ANDY COOK

LOIS MAYNARD

JEFF HUGHES

Lois is an energetic player who chips in with goals from the midfield. He arrived at the Club in the summer of 2015 following two seasons with FC Halifax Town. He caught the eye and was highly sought after following his 12 goals for the Shaymen in 2014-15. Last season, he made his international debut for St Kitts and Nevis.

Former Northern Ireland international Jeff Hughes joined Rovers from League Two side Cambridge United. The left-sided player has plenty of Football League experience with the likes of Crystal Palace, Notts County and Bristol Rovers and won two caps for Northern Ireland.

JAY HARRIS

JAMES NORWOOD

Jay Harris is a midfield player who joined the Club from Wrexham in the summer of 2015. He spent five years at the Racecourse Ground and helped the Welsh club to win the FA Trophy at Wembley in 2013. He began his youth career with Everton but failed to break into the first team at Goodison Park. He left and joined Accrington where he stayed for two seasons before joining Chester City.

Norwood joined the Club from Forest Green Rovers in 2015. He started his career with Eastbourne Town before moving to Exeter where he spent two seasons. During his time with the Grecians, Norwood had loan spells with Sutton, Forest Green and Eastbourne. He returned to Forest Green on a permanent basis in 2011 and was twice the leading scorer during his time.

The front man arrived at Tranmere from Barrow earlier this summer, after scoring 24 goals in the National League for The Bluebirds in 2015-16. A well-built and powerful forward, Cook is good in the air and has an excellent goalscoring record at each of his clubs. Cook has struck 19 times already this season.

THE GAFFER

MICKY MELLON Micky Mellon was appointed manager of Tranmere Rovers in October 2016 after leaving League One side Shrewsbury Town. Mellon replaced Gary Brabin, who was sacked in September. The former Fleetwood manager returned to the National League club for whom he featured in more than 200 games during two spells as a player.

CLUB HISTORY

CLUB HISTORY

TRANMERE ROVERS Tranmere Rovers Football Club is proud of its history. From fantastic cup runs to the signing of international players, the Club has been witness to and taken part in many memorable events since it was founded in 1884. By 1887, Rovers had moved ground to Ravenshaws Field, which was later renamed Prenton Park, our final home before the switch to the current Prenton Park in 1912. After competing in local leagues including the Liverpool & District League and the Lancashire Combination - a competition the side won its first silverware from in 1908 - the Club made the step up to the Central League in 1919. Following the expansion of the Football League in 1921 to a Third Divisions each for the north and south of England, Rovers were accepted into the Third Division (North) and played their first fixture against Crewe Alexandra at Prenton Park on August 27, 1921. Rovers claimed their first ever Championship in the Football League in 1938 when a tally of 56 points captured the Division Three (North) title and a place in Division Two for the first time. The side lasted just one season at the higher level and was relegated back to Division Three (North) where the Club remained until 1958 when the northern and southern section were combined into national Division Three and Division Four. After just three seasons, Rovers were relegated to Division Four and the Club brought in Scotsman Dave Russell as manager. Russell guided Rovers back to Division Three in

1967. Relegation to Division Four in 1979 put the club in financial difficulties. The goals of Ian Muir were not enough to prevent the debts from mounting in 1987 and after the Club obtained an administration order through the courts, local businessman Peter Johnson took over control and ownership of Rovers, with one of his first changes being the appointment of John King as manager for a second time. The following season Tranmere were promoted to Division Three, and continued the success in 1990 as the club returned to the Twin Towers to defeat Bristol Rovers in the final of the Leyland Daf Cup. A week later, however, Rovers lost out in the play-off final against Notts County to miss out on a place in Division Two. But the goal was achieved in 1991, with a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers in the play-off final. In three successive seasons the side was on the brink of a place in the top flight of English football, but each time Rovers were disappointed, an emotion the Club also experienced when losing in the semi-finals of the League Cup against Aston Villa and missing out on another match at Wembley. .Just one year later King was replaced by John Aldridge, who took up the role of player manager. After Aldridge retired from football in 1999, he led the Club through a period that will long be remembered for great cup results. Aldridge resigned in 2001 and after relegation to Division Two ended a spell of ten years in Division One, both Dave Watson and Ray

Mathias failed to guide the club back to the second tier of English football. In October 2003, Brian Little was appointed manager of Rovers and guided the side from the relegation zone to the brink of the play offs. In 2004-05, Rovers finished third on 79 points, one short of equalling the Club record. After losing the first leg of the Play Off semi-final against Hartlepool 2-0, a Prenton Park witnessed a fantastic comeback as Rovers took the tie to penalties. However, the it proved a step too far as the visitors ran out 6-5 winners. At the end of the 2005-06 season, Brian Little left the Club and was replaced by former player Ronnie Moore. In Moore’s three seasons in charge at Tranmere, the Club finished 9th, 11th and 7th. In June 2009 former England international John Barnes was appointed First Team Manager by Chairman Peter Johnson but after picking up just seven points from the first 11 league games he was replaced by physiotherapist Les Parry. Rovers finished the season in 19th place in League One, avoiding relegation on the final day of the season with a 3-0 victory at Stockport County. Almost two seasons later Parry departed the Club, with Ronnie Moore returning and guiding Rovers to a top half finish in 2012-13. Rovers have suffered two successive relegations in 2013-14 and 2014-15 with Gary Brabin taking over in the summer of 2015. After rebuilding, Brabin led the club to a 6th place finish, just outside the play-off places before being replaced by Micky Mellon in October 2016. MATCH ACTION

LEAGUE REVIEW Forest Green Rovers pulled level on points with the Imps at the top of the Vanarama National League table after a 3-0 win against Wrexham at the The New Lawn. Dagenham & Redbridge were looking to take advantage of Tranmere Rovers’ involvement in the Buildbase FA Trophy by moving above them into third place. However, they came unstuck after their long trek to Cumbria to take on Barrow AFC, who ran out 2-1 winners at the Furness Building Society Stadium to rekindle their own play-off hopes. Gateshead remain in fifth spot after beating struggling Woking 2-1 at the International Stadium. Dover Athletic are a couple of points behind Gateshead in sixth after edging the Kent derby with Bromley at Crabble. Dover entered the match on a threegame winless run and needed three points to re-ignite their play-off challenge. The Whites had failed to

12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

score in their last three games either, but managed to break that drought with a goal from Joe Healy on the hour-mark. Healy managed to beat the excellent Ross Flitney from close range. And the scorer turned hero at the other end as Healy’s goalline clearance in the dying stages ensured Dover claimed the points. Aldershot Town, along with Barrow, are snapping at Dover’s heels as they also won on Saturday. The Shots won 2-0 at the EBB Stadium against a Sutton United side who are now looking nervously over their shoulders at the drop zone rapidly closing up on them. There was also late drama at Chester FC, who conceded in the 90th minute as Eastleigh claimed a lastgasp away win. A second successive win for Richard Hill’s side came as a bit of a surprise as they were second best for long periods of the game.

But the Hampshire side took all three points at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium in the 90th minute when Scott Wilson turned in Michael Green’s corner. Guiseley AFC picked up a very useful point after a goalless draw at Meadow Park against mid-table Boreham Wood. The Lions are now in sixteenth place, seven points above the drop zone. However, it wasn`t such good news for Southport or North Ferriby United, who were both beaten to remain bottom and second-bottom respectively. Sam Corne proved to be Braintree Town’s hero at Cressing Road as he bagged a brace in their 2-0 win against Southport. He opened the scoring just before half-time and then grabbed a second with a screamer from 25 yards just shy of the hour-mark. The win lifts the Iron seven points clear of fourth-bottom Woking.

STANDS North Ferriby fan Sam Shepherd picks the bones out of a disappointing defeat to Solihull Moors... The Solihull game on Saturday was one Ferriby really had to win if they wanted to have a realistic chance of survival. Their opponents sat reasonably comfortably in mid table so they may not have been playing to their full potential as they have just about achieved what they wanted to this season.

throughout and couldn’t get any cohesive attacking play going like they had in the first half. The strikers had no service and Solihull had it easy. They took the lead

box. He picked his spot and steered his shot into the bottom left hand corner to put the icing on the Solihull cake.

That showed in the first half as Ferriby dominated proceedings. They were on the front foot from the off and peppered the Solihull box early on with crosses and they came close to opening the scoring when Mark Gray glanced a header just wide. But it was the visitors who took the lead though completely against the run of play. Rory Watson tipped a shot onto the post and Simeon Maye reacted fastest to score the rebound. Ferriby didn’t let this setback bother them and soon found an equaliser. again midway through the half after a mix up between Mark Gray and Robbie Tinkler allowed Omari SterlingJames an easy opportunity to score. Then they sealed the game when a free kick into the box was headed home unchallenged by George Carline. The salt was rubbed into the Ferriby wounds in stoppage time when Solihull got their fourth. At this point the Ferriby players seemed to be waiting for the referee’s whistle and Nortei Nortey was given far too much time on the ball in the

Steve Housham now has to try and pick his players up after such a disappointing defeat as we go again against high-flying Tranmere Rovers tonight. Ferriby were unlucky to lose to a stoppage time goal in the reverse fixture so they will be looking to get some revenge tonight and they really could do with some points to stop the gap to safety getting any bigger. Enjoy the game! Sam
