THE CHAIRMAN <

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of both VCD Athletic and Molesey to Princes Park, the clubs’ new home for the next five years on this cold December Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon, and after enjoyable game and some refreshments, they all have a safe journey home. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone associated with the club – whether you be a player, supporter, the first-team management not forgetting my fellow directors who I drive mad most of the season – a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Whilst writing I would, once again, like to thank all of our supporters new and old that have taken opportunity to support the club since our move from Thamesmead. As I walk around the ground I notice a number of old supporters that I am sure have taken the advantage of the community family season ticket offered to all those that live in the proximity of the ground, and a number of new faces that have become regulars, so I would assume that the majority of these supporters are from our landlords Dartford who join us when they are unable to join their

PAGE 04

team on matchday and hopefully they take advantage of our mead card initiative. It’s not a bad deal being able to gain entrance to our matches for £5 and over 65s for only £2-50, but although our gate is increasing we would always like to see more as I know the team like to play in front of a good size crowd, so please tell all your friends that they can join you enjoying an afternoon or evening watching TTFC be our 12th man and make Princes Park our fortress. I know I took a risk moving the club away from Thamesmead, but all of your actions together with some very good news that I shall announce in the New Year have proved that the club needed to move to survive. “All” we have to do now is ensure we play exciting football that brings in supporters to our matches, and then ensure we get the support of local businesses that

THAMESMEAD TOWN V VCD ATHLETIC & MOLESEY

will support the club financially. And at this time, I am working very hard on ensuring that the football club will become part of the local community as I originally intended, and as I said I hope I will be in the position to announce some brilliant news in the New Year – so watch this space. I have left writing about our last few matches to the end of my notes. Those that read my programme notes will note that I have, and always will, support Tommy as my first-team manager, because I feel he is a great asset to this club. Of course result tables do not lie and I would be the first person to admit things are not going right on the field at this time as I would have expected knowing how good we can play. But as I would expect, Tommy has taken control of circumstances and

> THE CHAIRMAN

bought a number of very skilled players into the club. Both I and Tommy agreed where we want to be at the end of the season and we are going to do whatever it takes to ensure we meet those targets agreed at the start of the season. You will not see Tommy or anyone within his management team hiding from what is happening on the pitch - they are all working very hard to ensure things change sooner than later and I as you all know will stand firm, but any of those supporters that follow us on our away days would have seen me at the end of the game telling the players as they were leaving the pitch the display I had just watched was “not good enough” and not what I personally pay for. And a couple of the players (mostly senior) replied “we know we have let you down again Chair”.

description. Now my response to that comment is it’s not just me, but also the supporters that spend their hard-earned money to watch them play! So let’s all stick together and turn the corner and once again get on the winning track we all know we are good enough for better things. At this time, I am looking too recruiting two people to join our friendly club firstly for a commercial person to join our small team, it could be a full-time position or part time, but will totally depend on the type of person applying for this position they would be reporting directly to myself. It is a type of job that the right person can develop on their own merits for the benefit of all parties, so if you interested or know someone that would like to apply please make contact directly with myself and I will send a full job

Secondly I am looking for a person that could bring the club into the twenty-first century with regard to its web site and social media. So if you are a person that feel you could give the club some of your time to ensure this section of the club is updated and monitored for the benefit of its growing supporter base. If you feel this could interest you, please make contact and discuss how you feel we could take this matter forward, my contact e-mail for both positions is as follows: directorttfc@live.co.uk Let’s enjoy a good game of football and season’s greetings to you all, Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Hello everyone and I’d like to welcome the players, supporters and officials from VCD Athletic and Molesey during the festive period. Because of printing deadlines, we’re doing these notes on the day that we played Corinthian Casuals in the League Cup and hopefully going into Christmas we’ll have a win or two to our name. I hope you all enjoyed Christmas and that Father Christmas brought you what you asked for! We’ve had a very disappointing December up to now, which on paper looked like a promising month, but proves what I’ve been saying all season that there’s no givens in football. Unfortunately, we’ve drawn a couple of games as well as losing a couple. Its kept us in the pack, but perhaps it’s an opportunity missed to make

PAGE 06

the gap between us and the top boys a bit tighter than it currently is.

taking our chances and unfortunately came away with a defeat.

Having said that, I think everyone has been guilty of that as the gap should have grown over the past few weeks, but it hasn’t, which again goes to show just how tight this league is.

Sometimes you have to accept defeats like we had that day, but now as we pass half way in the league fixtures and for me we should have points on the table that we actually do with the performances that we’ve been putting in.

And when we went to Molesey and drew 3-3 – it was an end-to-end exciting game that proved to me that a team who on paper is down towards the bottom of the league and on their day, can beat anyone as I thought that night they were very good at home. VCD we know all about of course with Keith. When we went there in August, we flew out of the blocks without

THAMESMEAD TOWN V VCD ATHLETIC & MOLESEY

I hate losing, but at the same time its part of football and all part of learning and we have to address the reasons why as soon as we can and that’s key as sometimes it’s not always possible and you have to be a bit patient at times. As we turn the half way mark when we’re only a handful of points off the play-off places with a lot of football still to go,

> THE MANAGER

hopefully we can go on one of these winning runs that all clubs dream of at this stage of the season. Let’s hope it starts in January to close the gap going into the final third. It’s been an interesting first half to the season. Overall, I think that the expectation level of the Football Club has changed – there’s an expectation level now for us to succeed this year and I think that anyone who’s been to all of our games. I think we’ve done more than enough to win the majority of games that we’ve played in and that includes our FA Cup ties and that game at home to Billericay. That should have been done and dusted in the first game, but that’s been our problem during the first half of the season and we have drawn a lot of games which does catch up with you, but going into the New Year hopefully that will change in our favour. I’d just like to finish by thanking you all for your support in what has been a massive year for the club and here’s to a Happy New Year for us all… Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on VCD Athletic and then Molesey in the Bostik League South. Merry Christmas everyone! With the festive season upon us, it’s a very busy time for all the boys. We’re now half-way through the season and we really need to start grabbing the points that we seem to be leaving behind, and start movement up the table. We owe it to ourselves to perform for the full ninety minutes and we need to start doing that sooner rather than later! At East Grinstead, was another prime example Proudly sponsored by... of that when we did the hard work, but couldn’t finish that job off.

THE Academy Good luck to Tom and the lads in both of our festive fixtures… The academy lads broke up what seems like an age ago now for the festive season, but will return next week – back to the hard work on January 4th, 2018. It’s been a long year as we started this crop of youngsters in January, but it’s been a successful year in the fact that three scholars have made it into the first-team squad with one of them – Lennie Laker – starting for Tom in the BOSTIK League. Everyone connected with the club hope Lennie, along with Dante McIntosh and Ade Adeniran, can make that step up and become regular first teamers in Tom’s matchday squad and hopefully pave the way for one or two more. Our last match before Christmas against Millwall

Lions at home was called off and postponed due to the bad weather which meant we missed an opportunity to bounce back after our defeat to Phoenix Sport’s the previous week. It was a desperately disappointing game at Phoenix and after a discussion, it was decided that their work rate and commitment had to improve and I’m hoping the Christmas break will refresh their desire as our first game back will be against Millwall Lions away on the 10th January. Let’s hope we can grab those three points and start pushing up the league. From everyone involved in the academy, may I wish you all compliments of the season and here’s to a successful 2018 for us all… Your is sport. Ian Docker Academy Manager

CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.

In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

VCD Athletic Like the Mead, VCD Athletic’s first season in BOSTIK South has been an interesting journey and on the day after Boxing Day, they’ll be looking to do the double over the Mead. The 3-1 win they enjoyed on August Bank Holiday Monday but their 1-0 win at Corinthian Casuals on the Saturday before the PAGE 16

holiday period broke a run of four defeats in five games. Incredibly at the half way stage of their League season, VCD have just one League draw on their record, but with the middle of the table so congested a win on the 27th for either side could well kick start respective seasons heading into 2018.

VCD ATHLETIC

Recent CLUB HISTORY VCD Athletic FC is one of only a few clubs to have originated during the Great War when, in 1916 it was formed by workers employed at the Vickers factory in Crayford. The club have played at the firm’s sports ground, Oakwood, in Old Road, Crayford, from the outset right up to the present time, except for eight seasons spent ground sharing. In their first season in the Kent League, while two years later, Vickers joined the Dartford & District League, followed by entry into the newly formed Kent Amateur League, Division One in 1923. Their first trophies came in 1927 when they won the Kent FA Junior Cup and the Kent Benevolent Cup. It was a further 25 years before more silverware came their way, when they won the Kent Division One title in 1953. The Kent Amateur Cup was won in 1962 and in 1964 but the following season saw a spectacular slump and relegation, with a record of P24 W0 D2 L22, goals for 25, goals against 199. Promotion was gained in 1969, but after a mediocre period during the 1970s, they were relegated in 1980 back to Division Two. A season later they were promoted back to Division One and in 1985 won the championship, gaining promotion to the restructured Premier Division. By now the Kent Amateur League had changed its name to the Kent County League and the club enjoyed further success when they won the Kent FA Intermediate Shield in 1988. In 1993, Martin Ford joined the club as manager and, in season 1995/1996 a unique cup treble was achieved with wins in the Kent Intermediate Shield, Kent County League Cup, and the Erith Hospitals Cup. Season 1996/1997 then saw the club win the Kent County Premier Division title for the first time in their history, and by a record 15 points. Senior status was awarded that same year and the club joined the Winstonlead Kent League where VCD Athletic finished in a creditable ninth place. The following season saw the club begin a groundshare with Thamesmead Town, finishing

up in seventh place but also reaching the final of the Kent League Cup, where they lost 1-0 to Deal Town. The club reached the final of the League Cup in 2002/2003, but on the day there was no celebration as VCD were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Cray Wanderers. The following season was a disappointment as far as the cups were concerned, but a creditable third place was achieved in the league. Further cup success followed however when, in season 2005/2006 the club reached the final of the Kent Senior Trophy for the second time. Having suffered a loss in the first final on penalties, there was a reversal of fortune this time when, after having drawn 1-1 with Tunbridge Wells at the end of extra time, the VCD players won the penalty shoot-out 3-1. At the end of the 2007 season Martin Ford resigned as manager head coach Dean Frost took over as caretaker manager, and under his guidance the club obtained runners up spot in the league. The following season Paul Foley was appointed manager of the first team, with Dean Frost reverting to his former position of head coach. Under their stewardship the club finished runners up once more. A year later, the club finally won the Kent League Premier Division title together with the Kent Senior Trophy, culminating in the long awaited promotion to the Ryman Football League. The first season was a success with an 8th place finish, but the club were left stunned when the Ryman League deemed ground issues warranted demotion, and despite an appeal to the Football Association, the decision was upheld and the club went back to the Kent League. Manager Paul Foley resigned to join Chatham Town, taking virtually the whole team with him, and the club appointed former reserve team manager Ricky Bennett his replacement. Under his leadership VCD achieved third place in his first season, and the season after the team was also challenging for honours and, but for a

disappointing end to the campaign we certainly would have given Herne Bay a closer run to their title. Once again third place was attained but this time we had the added bonus of winning the Kent League Cup, beating Corinthian 2-0 in the final. We also lifted a second trophy with a 3-2 victory over league champions Herne Bay in the Kent League Challenge Shield. Midway through season 2012/2013 Ricky Bennett left the club due to outside pressures, and in his place the club secured the services of Tony Russell, who joined with his assistant Ray Powell. With most of the players leaving with the previous manager the club was in disarray, but a side was quickly formed by the new management, and a magnificent record breaking run of 17 victories and 2 draws in the last 19 league fixtures enabled the club to once more gain promotion to the Ryman Division 1 North. Starting as favourites for relegation, the club had a stunning run, winning the first 15 games before securing the title by a point, taking the club to the Premier Division, its highest ever level. The club struggled for a lot of the season, spending most of the time in the relegation places but winning the last 6 games saw us climb to safety, finally finishing in 18th position to maintain our place in the division. Manager Tony Russell immediately resigned, joining Cray Wanderers, taking his entire side with him but the club acted quickly to secure the services of Keith McMahon as new manager. Keith came with a wealth of experience but, with no players at the club and only a few weeks to the start of the 2015/2016 season Keith was up against it. He worked tirelessly and brought in some excellent players, but despite some good performances we were unable to find the consistency needed in the Premier Division and were relegated back to Division 1 (North). Back on a square footing this preseason we have seen a number of new signings arrive and we look to make our mark in the new campaign.

INTRODUCING

Molesey If the Mead’s game at Molesey at the back end of November is anything to go by, this afternoon’s contest could be a cracker. The 3-3 draw a month ago really did have almost everything in it, but masks for the Moles a run on just a solitary win in their last 11 league games which has seen them slip to 21st in the League table. PAGE 24

This is Molesey’s third season back at this level – last season they finished in 19th – yet the Mead left Walton Road after a severe interrogation yet it would appear that inconsistency has been one of the Surrey side’s problems – and victory in 2017’s final game would surely give them a boost going into the New Year.

MOLESEY

Recent CLUB HISTORY Ex-Corinthian, and prominent local G.P, Dr. James Jenkinson Knox started the ‘Hampton Court and East Molesey Association Football Club’ in the Autumn of 1892. The club changed its name to ‘The Molesey Football Club’ in 1896. The club went through the metamorphosis of Molesey Athletic to Molesey St. Mary’s before Molesey St. Paul’s emerged as the leading club in Molesey in 1905 playing their Kingston & District League home matches at the Royal Oak. In 1911/12, Molesey St. Pauls amalgamated with a lower-leagued team, Molesey, to form Molesey & St. Pauls United. Discarding the ‘St. Paul’s United’ part, Molesey entered the Surrey Junior League for one season in 1920/21. This put them into the semi-finals where they hosted and beat Thornville (Croydon), 4 – 0. The league was won in a final at Walton, vs Godalming Federation, 1 – 0. Senior football for Molesey only lasted one season (21/22) when the club entered the Southern Suburban League Division One, where although performing creditably 3rd. For 1946/47, the two clubs, Molesey United and West Molesey Old Boys, merged to form ‘Molesey F.C’ and played over the road on the ‘rec in the Surrey Intermediate League. That year, the league title was won, and the Surrey Intermediate Charity Cup Final was reached, losing 1 – 4 to Farnham Town reserves at Guildford City F.C in a final played at the start of the following season. The Surrey Intermediate Challenge Cup Final was also reached during 50/51, but at Leatherhead F.C., old rivals Ditton Old Boys proved too strong, winning 2 – 0. With the help of an F.A loan, our present site at 412 Walton Road was purchased for the start of the 1953/54 season. That season would see the Moles play for the first time in black and white (due to the influence of

Fulham F.C connections) and enter the Surrey Senior League! A 4 – 1 victory, at Chertsey Town F.C., over Farnham Town (1st team!) in Surrey Senior League Charity Cup Final, saw Molesey’s first Senior honours in 1956/57. The following season (57/58), Molesey won the Surrey Senior League Title (Unfortunately the Moles have not won a league since!) 1958/59 saw Molesey apply for, and succeed in their application to join the Spartan League, pay off their F.A. loan, and begin work on a new clubhouse; and lose the final of the Surrey Senior League Challenge Cup to Malden Town, in a replay at K’s, 3 – 1. Molesey’s first season in the Spartan League was arguably their most successful in their 14-year stay there they finished second to Staines Town. The Spartan League Cup was won, 3 – 2 Vs Crown & Manor, at Ruislip Manor F.C in 1961/62 despite the Moles finishing third from bottom! Playing in the Athenian League Division Two for four seasons between 1973-77, one Mr. Cyrille Regis played for the Moles during 75/76, during which they won Section D of the Premier Midweek Floodlit League with a record points haul, reached the final of the Surrey Senior Shield, losing 1 – 2 to Woking, at Stompond Lane and also reached the Vase 5th round losing down in Bristol. The club were elected into a newly formed Division Two of the Isthmian League for the start of 1977/78 when for the first 2 seasons, the club narrowly missed promotion. The 1981/82 season saw Molesey’s furthest run in the F.A. Vase, the quarter-finals, where, under a crowd of 604 in Molesey, the Notts Alliance side, Rainworth Miners Welfare cruelly ended Molesey’s dreams, 1 – 0. The close season following 1985/86, saw Gary Mayne head the members in refusing the relocation of the football club proposed by the then committee, due to mounting debts.

The result was that part of the club was sold off. The rebuilding under Gary reaped rewards when, under Martin Eede, the club won promotion to the Isthmian League Division One in 1989/90 and won the Southern Combination Cup, 3 – 2 Vs Feltham at Walton Road the year after. The 1992/93 season saw the club promoted to the Premier, and reach the final of the Isthmian League Cup at Aldershot Town where they lost 1 – 2 to Marlow. In 1993/94, the club reached the F.A. Cup First Round Proper stage, losing 0 – 4 at home to Conference side, Bath City. The league’s refusal to again grant the club an ‘A’ grading for their Walton Road ground mid-way through 95/96, condemned the club to their first ever relegation. This started a bleak period in the club’s history when the club slowly but surely slipped down the Isthmian leagues, hastened by off field dramas instigated by a former chairman and later, a ‘legal secretary’. Staines Town won the Southern Combination Cup back from Molesey in 2005/06 – when it was Staines turn to field mostly reserve and youth players and win! In 2007/08 the Moles went out the Isthmian League and didn’t win at home all season! Since then, we have consolidated our Combined Counties status, even reaching the Surrey Senior Cup Semi Final in 2010/11 for only the third time in our history! Last season (12/13), the Moles won the Southern Combination Cup on a penalty shoot-out, 5 – 4, against Spelthorne Sports following a 1 – 1 draw after extra time. Also the management team of Steve Webb, Peter Lelliott and Alan Maynard enter their seventh consecutive term in charge appointing a new coach, Dan Carroll and look to be competitive again in this season’s Combined Counties League

PLAYER INTERVIEW <

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

DANNY PARISH

In the latest of our player features in this festive edition of the Mead, we’ve been talking to one of the newer members of the squad who has made a terrific goal scoring start to his career in a Thamesmead shirt. Greenie has been talking this Christmas to Danny Parish…

> PLAYER INTERVIEW

Danny’s first game for the club was on the 3G pitch at Walton Casuals and we wondered just what it was like making your debut for a club in such a different environment to Princes Park. Danny admitted: “First of all it was the first competitive men’s game I had ever played, and everything seems different when you’re paying for three points and I got the feeling at the end of that game of how important those three points are in a league like this.” Danny’s parents come to ever game to support him – even if Mum does need reminding who to support: “My Dad has had a massive influence on my footballing career. He used to drive me almost 1000 miles a week while I was an academy player at Brentford and was also my coach at junior football for many years. “My family has always been supportive of my football,” Danny said, and added smiling:

“as for the Brentford coat that Mum always wears to games, I have told her to take it off and she said: “when you give me a replacement’. I guess it is Christmas!”

want to score as many goals as I can.”

Since he started that first game at Walton, Danny’s regular partner has either been Paul Vines or Richard Pacquette, and we wondered what that was like for someone just 19 years of age.

First football kit bought (either for you or by you?) West Ham United

“It is really good playing with Vinsey and Pacs as they have so many years playing football and as such a young player I want to learn from them,” he said. “What attracted me to play for Thamesmead and under Tommy is that I had heard that Tommy is good at progressing young players and they trusted me to put me into the starting line up straight away and I don’t want to let them down. My hopes for The Mead for 2018 is that we get into the play offs and earn promotion. For me, I

We finished with the same five “Footballing First’s” that we ask everyone.

First album or CD bought? Bruno Mars First football match attended? West Ham United vs Sheffield United First car owned? Vauxhall Corsa First foreign holiday? Tenerife And going into World Cup year, how far will England go in Russia? As any English supporter I hope we win it. If not, I hope to see them at least get to the semi-final.

CRAIG’S CORNER <

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes!

Hello and welcome all to another set of fixtures here at Princess Park. First of all, I would like to wish all supporters, players, management, directors and anyone else connected with Thamesmead Town a very happy Christmas, I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable festive period with your

PAGE 32

families & loved ones. I also hope that 2018 will be a happy and successful year for all, maybe 2018 will be a little more peaceful across the globe, maybe we can all live in peace & harmony - let us hope so. Football, well I just do not know what to say about our

THAMESMEAD TOWN V VCD ATHLETIC & MOLESEY

fixture at East Grinstead, 3-1 in front and yet again we fail to manage a game and secure the three points. We are now on a run of seven league games without a win and I think if my memory serves me correctly we have led in six of those games!

In my opinion, we have been playing quite well offensively as a unit back to front however we just do not manage a game defensively as a unit or kill a game off decisively.

> CRAIG’S CORNER

Exasperating is one word, frustrating, annoying, ridiculous, unbelievable are a few others. We are nothing if not entertaining that is for sure. Now we move in to the busy Christmas period with games continuing to come thick and fast, the gaffer has made some new signings in order to freshen things up, so I am hoping we can now push on into the New Year and get where we need to by the end of March/ beginning of April when the business end of the season kicks in. I hope you all get a visit from Father Christmas and he leaves you something useful, pair of socks, pair of pants, a Thamesmead Town annual, you just never know. Have a safe and happy Christmas and thank you to all who have supported us. Craig Gibson First-team Coach
