STALYBRIDGE CELTIC North Ferriby United returned to winning ways after ending a four game winless run when they beat Corby Town 4-1 last time out. Now the club have the chance to record back-to-back victories and further cement their place in the Play-off pack they host Stalybridge Celtic. Today’s visitors will have been bitterly disappointed not have recorded a win last time out and instead had to settle for a point in a thrilling 5-5 draw against AFC Telford United. The Celts were in a commanding 5-2 lead after goals from Chris Simm (2), Bohan Dixon, Jack Higgins and Danny Wisdom but Telford fought back and scored an injury-time leveller. A win for Ferriby could see them climb above AFC Fylde and Harrogate Town results permitting whilst Stalybride could go 13th with victory.

CLUB INFORMATION Founded | 1909 Nickname | The Celts Ground | Bower Fold (6,500) 2014/15 Position | 1st (promoted) Honours | Northern Premier League Premier Division Champions - 1991/92 & 2001/01 North West Counties League Champions 1984/85 & 1987/88 Northern Premier League Challenge Cup Winners - 1999

MANAGER: Liam Watson After a serious injury curtailed his playing career Liam Watson went into management with a host of clubs including Southport twice and Burscough. In 2013, he became the manager of AFC Telford United, where he again won the Conference North in 2014, and though they reached the second round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history, they remained rooted in the bottom reaches of the Conference Premier, and Liam and Telford parted company to Celtic’s benefit, as he was tasked with saving Celtic with just eight games left which is exactly what he did!

STALYBRIDGE CELTIC

Tony McMillan

Peter Wylie

Position: Defender Peter started his career with Blackburn Rovers, and made numerous FA Youth Cup appearances for Rovers, before joining Skelmersdale United in 2013. He was ever present in the Skelmersdale United side last season.

Danny Wisdom

Position: Defence Danny started his career at Morecambe, coming through the teams to be awarded a professional contract. After two seasons, he joined Kendal Town and had three successful seasons. In 2013 he

briefly joined Northwich Victoria before returning to Kendal, and in 2014 joined Skelmersdale United before joining Celtic in July 2015.

John Shaw

Position: Defence

After a five year stint at Marine, where John was skipper, he decided that a change was required. With 221 appearances and 9 goals under his belt, John signed up with exCeltic favourite Tony Sullivan at Witton Albion in October 2014.

Matty Hughes

Position: Defence

He was enticed to join AFC Fylde and helped them to promotion to Conference North, becoming voted young player of the year for the 13/14 season. The lure of full time football was too great, and he joined Celtic during that summer of 2014 and is now the club skipper.

Oliver Crowley Position: Defence

ONE TO WATCH: JACK HIGGINS Jack was been a stalwart in the back four for Ashton United, not only becoming their player of the year for 2015, but also voted centre half of the year in the Evostik Premier by his peers. Whilst at Rushden and Diamonds he was frequently sent on loan, playing for the Towns, Daventry, Billericay and Hemel Hemsptead. He joined Celtic in the summer of 2015 and is proving a valuable acquisition, for both his defensive and goal scoring capabilities. North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

Oliver was one of Keith Briggs’s first signings when he took over in 2013. He came through the Everton youth system, before transferring to Watford’s youth system. His goal against Leyton Orient for the Youth team was voted goal of the season for the 12/13 season.

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

Chris Simm

Position: Forward Simmo is a proven non-league striker, bagging goals wherever he play. He joined Celtic from Chorley, where he had been on non-contract terms. In 2014, he re-joined Chorley, and now returns back to play under Liam Watson at Stalybridge. At the end of the 2014/15 season, Simmo’s goals were vital in keeping the club in the league, during our 8 game unbeaten streak

Steve Tames

Position: Forward Steve joins Celtic from Warrington Town and is no stranger to playing for Liam Watson who signed him from Prescot Cables, where he scored 19 goals in a season in 2012, to play for Southport where he went on to make forty appearances and score four times. Stalybridge Celtic

CLUB HISTORY Stalybridge Celtic’s history has been the subject of many debates for the greater part of the century. Although an outfit calling itself ‘Celtic’ appears in the archives for 1906, this side seemingly only played friendlies on a ground at North-End. This seed of a club was probably the basis for the club we know today, which was formed in 1909. Celtic played for two seasons in the Lancashire & Cheshire Amateur League, before turning professional and joining the Lancashire Combination becoming second division champion’s at the first attempt. Due to some local bureaucracy, Celtic’s ambition to join the Football League meant that they had to join the Southern League, and travel by train to every away match. There followed a short pause most people know as the First World War. In the aftermath Celtic rejoined the Central League. At the end of the 1921 season, Celtic became one of the founder members of the Third Division (North).

However, winning this league was to prove too difficult, finishing 7th and 11th in the first two years. Lacking the support of local people, the funds were not available to press for a third campaign, forcing Celtic to voluntarily resign from the football league. Celtic rejoined the Cheshire County League and stayed there for sixty years until the formation of the Bass NW Counties League. Peter Wragg took the helm and steered Celtic to Championship victory in 1980. Phil Wilson took over the reigns in 1989 when relegation threatened, eventually finishing second in the NPL. He followed this escaping act with promotion into the Conference in 1992. Our first season was a success, finishing 12th, but it was followed by disaster and relegation loomed again. Peter Wragg returned and saved the sinking ship. Peter Wragg resigned at the start of the 1996/97 season, replaced by Brian Kettle, but it was not enough, and Celtic were relegated in 1998 back to the NPL. It was troubling times for the club, and there was a succession North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

of managers before Phil Watson came back and inspired the side to multiple cup wins along with the league title. The foray into the Conference was short lived though. Phil Wilson joined Southport, taking several of the squad with him. The club brought in Dave Miller before nearly keeping the side in the Conference before sensationally sacking nearly the entire team. With the formation of the Conference North in 2004/05, Celtic had to finish 2003/04 in 13th or higher - and just managed it. Our first season in the Conference North was almost our last, and with half the season gone, Miller was sacked and replaced by John Reed. John pulled off the great escape, clawing back an 18 point deficit. A poor couple of seasons saw John Reed replaced with Steve Burr, who took Celtic to the play off final at his first attempt in the 2007/08 season. Steve Burr’s second season saw him come within a whisker of the play offs, and after a storming start to his third season in charge, he left to join Kidderminster.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S

Frustration and missed opportunities in recent weeks for Ferriby but Sam Shepherd believes a win today could open the league up again... I always try to look on the bright side when it comes to Ferriby because one bad performance is usually followed by a very good one however this hasn’t been the case in the last few weeks andes but when one came they took it and with it the vital 3 points.

Enjoy the game, Sam

Today we face Curzon Ashton in what is now a must win game in my opinion. Ferriby are not a bad side and every team goes through patches of poor form. We all know how good a manager Billy Heath is and I expect him to have Ferriby fired up to deliver a much better performance today and if that happens I’m sure we will come away with the win. A win today and a couple of results going our way would totally change the league table again so all is not lost. North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
