MANAGER’S COLUMN

STEVE

HOUSHAM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Boreham Wood to our home this Saturday afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Boreham Wood in the National League. After two away games and two long journeys it’s nice to be back home. A lot has gone on since our last home game, first of all we travelled to Sutton United and we did not get off to the best of starts with us hitting traffic and not getting to the ground till 2:30pm!

recalled back to his parent club, I would first of all like to thank Rory for his services at North Ferriby, he has had a great season and I would like

of the season. But it was no shock to us, we believed we could win and we did just that it was a proud day for us all.

to wish him all the best for his future and I’m sure he has got a great future ahead of him.

We now need to follow that up today against Boreham Wood who will be a tough test, but we enter the game with confidence and belief.

Even though preparation was not great, we started the game well and then Sutton scored with their first attack and the lads seemed to feel sorry for themselves. We found ourselves 3-0 down at half-time, but we came out in the second-half and again we started bright and got a goal back through Robbie Tinkler. Then moments later Ben Middleton had a great chance to pull it back to 3-2, but missed and then they scored again and it was game over. To top a bad day off the bus broke down and we ended up getting home just after 4am!! As we know Rory Watson has been

We had the task of then finding a goalkeeper and at last moment, we managed to bring in Owen Evans from Wigan who made his debut against high-flying Forest Green a daunting task eh? But we went there with a game plan and stuck to it and every man in the squad put in a great performance and we got a well deserved three points against a top side in what was the shock result

With five games to go we are still fighting so please show your support again and get behind the lads for this last month of our historic season and ,who knows, the miracle is still alive! Steve Housham First-Team Manager

THE VISITORS...

BOREHAM WOOD

North Ferriby return to home soil to take on Boreham Wood full of confidence after their win over Forest Green Rovers last weekend... While the Villagers still face a tall order to bridge the gap to safety, Ferriby claimed a famous 1-0 victory over Forest Green Rovers last weekend. The Rovers had only previously been beaten once on home soil – a loss to Lincoln City, but Ferriby defied bookies odds of 18-1 to claim the three points. The Villagers return to home soil to entertain a Boreham Wood side who have lost their previous two games against Southport and Macclesfield. That said, Boreham Wood managed to topple National

4

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

League leaders Lincoln City 2-0 the week prior to that loss to Southport, so Ferriby must be on their guard this afternoon. Today’s visitors are safe from relegation, while the play-offs is out of sight, but don’t bank on the club doing Ferriby any favours. The corresponding fixture will give Steve Housham hope that his side can get something out of the game, with Wood narrowly winning 1-0. Anthony Jeffrey’s 47th minute strike was the difference back in October, but the game could have swung either way.

CLUB HISTORY

CLUB HISTORY

BOREHAM WOOD Boreham Wood Football Club celebrated its 65th Anniversary in the 2012/13 season, having been formed in 1948 following the amalgamation of Boreham Rovers and Royal Retournez. In its formative years the club progressed through the MidHerts League, Parthenon League, Spartan League, and Athenian League before being promoted to the Isthmian Football League in 1974/75. It won the Division Two Championship in 1976/77 by sixteen points. The club then had a five season spell in the Premier Division during the late seventies and early eighties, and enjoyed another much more successful spell in the Premier Division, during the nineties, which sadly ended in relegation at the end of the 1999/2000 season. However, the club bounced back quickly and were once again promoted back to the Premier Division as the Ryman League Division One Champions in 2000/01. Following the Football Association restructuring of Non-League Football in 2004, Boreham Wood competed in the Southern Football League Division One East for two seasons, winning the championship in 2005/06. Following that promotion the club returned to the Ryman Football League Premier Division for the 2006/07 season. In the FA Trophy (the non-league fa cup), the Club went on an incredible cup run actually reaching

the Semi-Finals in 2005/06. We are to this day, the lowest ranked team ever to have reached the last four of this prestigious tournament. The 2009/10 season was a very memorable one, that saw the club finish 4th in its Ryman league campaign and went on to take part in a the play-offs for the first time. After defeating Aveley 1-0 away in the Semi-Final, the club went on to beat Kingstonian 2-0 at home in the final of the Ryman Premier League Play Offs and deservedly took its place in the Conference South. After that promotion, a poor start to the 2010/11 league campaign, saw us struggle initially to sit bottom at Christmas but the team recovered well to finish in a respectful fourteenth place in the table‌The 2011/12 season saw us build on our 14th place and achieve a very respectable 8th in the Conference South, to finish ever closer to the coveted play-off spots. The 2012/13 season saw the club start very well but finish equally poorly and we ended up after a promising start in a disappointing 9th place. However the story of our season was that we got to the FA Cup First Round against Brentford at Meadow Park, after a memorable 3-2 win against Hayes & Yeading in the 4th qualifying round, which saw us come from two-nil down after five minutes, to win the game 3-2 in the last few minutes. In 2013 we got the go ahead to build a brand new 890 Seated West Stand. The project was completed in May 2014 and was officially opened by Mr Arsene Wenger in

front of a crowd of 3400, before our Pre-Season friendly against an Arsenal First Team on Saturday 19th July 2014. 2014/15 was undoubtedly the most successful season in Boreham Wood Football Clubs 67 year history. After leading the Conference South league for the majority of the season we finally finished second to eventual champions Bromley and took our place in the playoffs. After beating Havant and Waterlooville 2-0 away and drawing 2-2 at home in the two legged semi-final. We faced a talented Whitehawk side at our home of Meadow Park in front of a partisan 2,121 crowd. A Lee Angol set piece put us ahead before a Whitehawk penalty levelled proceedings. However a Junior Morias winner in extra time sent the club into raptures, sent the town into overdrive and put us into the new National league for the very first time. With the Chairman overseeing 3 promotions in nine seasons. With over 10 million pounds worth of ground and facility investment spent in his 16 year tenure. Sound structures are now in place, for the club to ensure it utilises its facilities 52 weeks of the year. We now have the largest football/ education scheme in the country with over 500 scholars recruited for season 2015/16. As such optimism has once again returned to Meadow Park and the future of Boreham Wood Football Club is looking bright.

MATCH ACTION

LEAGUE REVIEW There were three matches in the Vanarama National League on Tuesday night and all of them had significance at either end of the table. Tranmere Rovers moved level on points with Lincoln City at the top of the table after edging a five-goal thriller at Prenton Park against a still not completely safe Sutton United. Micky Mellon`s side looked to be coasting to victory until a late burst saw the U`s pull level before Rovers grabbed a last-gasp winner. Rovers were two-up with goals from Michael Ihiekwe on the halfhour mark – a header from an Adam Buxton cross - and an unfortunate Craig Eastmond own goal on the hour-mark. But substitute Jack Jebb reduced the deficit in the 77th minute and then just 4 minutes later, a nervy host side conceded an equaliser when another sub, Pape Gueye, pulled Sutton level from close range. However, deep into stoppage time, Ihiekwe (pictured) thumped home a stunning volley to record what could prove to be a vitally important three points for Tranmere. York City, who earned back-to-

12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

back wins last week to give them a real boost in their attempt to stay up, missed the opportunity to move out of the drop zone. The Minstermen failed to make it a hat-trick of three point hauls when they suffered a 2-0 defeat to an out-of-form Bromley outfit who, in contrast, came into the game on the back of three successive defeats. The hosts made the worst possible start with Louis Dennis opening the scoring inside a couple of minutes, the forward chasing a through ball before beating the onrushing Scott Loach. York tried hard to get back into the game and Amari Morgan-Smith came the closest in the first half. But the visitors grabbed a vital second goal in the 57th minute when striker Toby Sho-Silva headed home a free-kick following a costly mistake by Loach. Alex Whittle forced visiting `keeper Ross Flitney into a good save but this is a defeat that could prove extremely costly for Gary Mills` side. Bottom-markers Southport`s hopes of remaining in non-League football`s top division look even slimmer as they crashed to a

seventh defeat in eight games at the Merseyrail Community Stadium against Buildbase FA Trophy finalists Macclesfield Town. The Silkmen, who have games in hand on all above them, may yet have a say in the top five race and a second successive away win did those hopes no harm at all. But this defeat could prove fatal for Port, who are now 11 points adrift of the safety-mark with only 15 left to play for. The visitors took a 13th minute lead when Danny Whitaker whipped in a cross for Neil Byrne to head past Chris Cheetham. And less than 2 minutes later, the hosts found themselves two-down, Anthony Dudley heading into the net from an Andy Halls cross. The home side pulled one back 3 minutes before the break. Full-back Ryan Higgins cut inside before unleashing a 25-yard screamer which flew into the top corner past Scott Flinders. Macclesfield saw out the second half to keep their outside play-off hopes alive, and even came closest to increasing their lead when a Mitch Hancox header hit the bar.

STANDS North Ferriby fan Sam Shepherd looks back at the superb Forest Green Rovers victory... Well no one saw that coming did they? After a run of bad results Ferriby travelled to Forest Green last week with not many giving them a prayer. They were 18-1 outsiders and almost everyone expected a comfortable home win. Somehow, though, Steve Housham and his side defied the odds again as they have done on so many occasions this season.

jubilant as were the players and they stayed solid for the last 25 minutes to achieve a famous away win. It was the result of the week in the National League and some may say the result of the season

Today we welcome Boreham Wood to the EON Stadium. It’s another must-win game for Steve Housham’s side as they sit 8 points from safety

A defeat would have left Ferriby staring relegation in the face with little hope of survival. Now though they still have a fighting chance. It was the perfect away performance at Forest Green. Ferriby were disciplined and resolute from the start and made it very difficult for their high-flying opponents to break them down. The young team really stepped up to the plate and they got the goal they deserved mid-way through the second half. Danny Emerton did well to keep the ball in on the right hand touchline before delivering a peach of a cross that was nodded home by Reece Thompson at the near post. Rory Watson has been recalled by Scunthorpe United and I would just like to thank him for his services this season. Watson has a very bright future ahead of him if this season is anything to go by. He has kept us in so many games and some of his saves have been truly stunning, the one at Wrexham away springs to mind. Good luck Rory, I hope you make it to the very top!

with 5 games left. They lost the reverse fixture in October and they need to rectify that this weekend. Boreham Wood now sit comfortably in mid-table so with them having nothing to play for Ferriby need to exploit that and bust a gut again to get the three points! Enjoy the game! Sam
