CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Romford FC on this Saturday afternoon and hope after their journey they enjoy the hospitality available and after hopefully an enjoyable match they have a safe journey home. May I also welcome the pupils and staff from Windrush Primary School who are our guests at the match today, please enjoy yourself and I am sure I will meet with you all when we have our usual question and answer session before the match, any questions you have I will if I can answer them. Well here we are playing back home after our travels of last week to Dereham Town FC, the squad travelled by a luxury coach that I supplied through Kings Ferry Coaches (our approved traveller) to ensure, as it was a long distance for them to drive with the possibility

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

of a breakdown using their own transport, that they all arrived together and hopefully relaxed. I personally travelled to Dereham by car with Ian which, in the end, was an uneventful journey, it was quite relaxing for me anyway of course as I was not the one driving this time. I know that these clubs are a long way away from our ground, but they must also travel to us so I feel that we as a club should support our team home and away I feel the squad and management deserves this away support. Anyway, after a very hard match we came away with all three points, even though once again the officiating was very poor in my opinion, resulting in several cards being issued to our players and at the death.

Well into injury time one of our players received a second unfortunate and questionable second yellow card, which means he will miss today’s match but it will give another person in the squad the opportunity to shine. I suppose when you look at the number of football clubs within the Ryman North that are well over 2 ½ hours travelling time away from our ground, the argument comes into question why do the FA and the leagues allow these clubs to play in this league. You would have thought the FA could go back to regionalisation it worked before so why not again, lets await and see what the FA have up their sleeves this season as we have had whispers that there will be new lines drawn that will necessitate certain clubs moving to new leagues.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

But we as a club must pay for spend over ÂŁ3000 per season in supplying coaches for the team for these types of trips. I am on record as saying that I would prefer that the club playing in the Ryman South for two reasons; the ease of travel even though there are some long journeys, but you do not have to use the Dartford tunnel or bridge which is a tactical nightmare to use week after week when required. I am on record as saying that I would prefer that the club playing in the Ryman South for two reasons; the ease of travel even though there are some long journeys, but you do not have to use the Dartford tunnel or bridge which is a tactical nightmare to use week after week when required. And secondly the type of football played, but that decision will not ever be in my hands as it is a League decision to make but be assured they are aware of my views. As you know I have been keeping you all up-to-date with regards to our move for next season, I can advise you that now that I have completed all formal matters with a football club. I have negotiated an agreement for the first-team to only play their matches at their ground, and advised that this matter will be on the agenda at the next board meeting, hopefully being held during this week so by the match I might know if the League have formally agreed the finished product.

At the same time, I have agreed to consider all options to ensure that this football club does everything in its own powers to promote itself in many ways, and to this end I am in the process of concluding a deal that will bring a qualified company in to review all aspects of the club. In other words we will be starting the process of re-branding the club as from next month. I have had the opportunity to review the money I have wasted listening to my advisors regarding the website and social media, and to this day we still have not achieved our original aims, but I have spent thousands - money that could have been used more beneficially for the club. So yes, there will be changes this club must promote itself in everything that we do, but it must be done more professionally we must bring this club into the 21st century and as my five-year business plan will shows. This club within five years has to be able to stand on its own two feet rather than depend on me, so one of the ways this club can make itself more financially is by raising monies through new and genuine revenue streams rather than rely on my finances. I am even considering looking at the club badge as I feel it does not really portray what the club is at this time. If anyone has any suggestions just contact me. I hope you enjoy the match Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome to our friends from Romford who have made the short trip to be with us at Bayliss Avenue today. It was nice to get a good win last week on a difficult playing surface up at Dereham. Again we started the game well and deservedly went in front, before conceding a couple of sloppy goals which meant we came in at half-time feeling a little bit sorry for ourselves.

We spoke about things at half-time and to be fair to the boys, we could have been well clear at the end – we’ve hit the bar and missed a couple of other very good situations – it was a good performance coming back from our last away game down at Heybridge. Hopefully we can continue the good form today against another side who, on their day, can beat anyone in this league. Kaka’s come in on a month’s loan and made a great start last weekend.

You could see he hasn’t been playing regularly, but he did well – he was blowing – but he’s a good honest lad who wants to learn and he chipped in with a goal. So he’s got to be well happy with his overall performance and hopefully he’ll go from strength-to-strength. To be fair, at their place, it was one of those games as I’ve said before which we got a point when we really stole a point – we played games before Christmas when we dominated sides and didn’t get the

“We’ll always treat every team in this league the same - top, middle or bottom” 06

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

MANAGER’S NOTES

rub of the green and I’m not naive enough or stupid enough to think we deserved anything for the way we played over there. We stole a point, but I’ll take that considering the amount of time this season, the boots been on the other foot. Every manager will say the same thing – if we sort ourselves out today we can beat anyone in this league. I’ve always said that we’ll always treat every team in this league the same – top, middle or bottom – we’ll treat everyone with the respect that they deserve. And again today I’m expecting a tough game. We’ve only got nine games left now

and so our target becomes seventythree points until it’s mathematically impossible for us not to get that number. Until the team in fifth gets a number of points that we can’t get, we’ll keep going. And when that times come we aim for sixth and so on. I want to finish as high as we can as the season isn’t dead – I think with nine games to go it’s still mathematically possible – an outside chance – but it gives us a chance to keep playing. We want to finish as high as we can – the club finished tenth last year and that’s the minimum I’d like this season. All the time the points are on the board to be played for we’ll keep going, and so all the time that the seasons still alive we’ll be setting the

boys targets in a little mini league – which at the moment has 27 points in it… Finally, I’d like to welcome the boys and girls from Windrush Primary School who are with us today. If you’re as noisy as the other school’s that we’ve had down so far this season we’ll have a cracking atmosphere here this afternoon. I hope you all enjoy your afternoon and didn’t grill me too much when I met you earlier on. See you in the Mead Bar after the game. Cheers Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

In her regular column, first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list...

We welcome Romford to Bayliss Avenue today. After an impressive win away last weekend at Dereham the boys are looking to end the season on a high with another win today to get a run going. Last week’s game saw Tom O’Connor and Harvey Brand missing. Tom with an ankle injury sustained early on against Brightlingsea and was left out

of the side and Harvey pulling out in the warm-up with a knee problem. We are hopeful that they should both return to the side over the next couple of weeks. Walks continues to make great progress in his recovery following the removal of the metal wires from his knee at the beginning of the month. He’s been having hydrotherapy sessions weekly

which he says are helping him massively, he’s come so far in such a short space of time and even managed to do a session on the exercise bike on Tuesday which he has been dying to do for weeks. Enjoy today’s game and have a safe journey home, Carly Payne First-team Physio

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Good afternoon everybody, today we have the pleasure of hosting Romford in our Ryman League fixture, I hope they enjoy their brief stay with us. Last Saturday saw us travel to Norfolk to face Dereham Town, having the previous Saturday fallen to a home defeat against highflying Brightlingsea Regent. It was, what I thought was an even game, but missed chance cost us dear. Brightlingsea are a good well-organised side and you can see why they are in amongst the top four.

Our visit to Dereham did, however, reap rewards! On a very heavy pitch we turned in a very good secondhalf performance that did win us the game. Ellis Brown had given us an early lead only for us to concede two goals in the first half and we started the second half 2-1 down. We relentlessly worked against a stubborn Dereham defence who rode their luck at times, but goals from Bekka Dembele and Alex Teniola saw us ease in and bring away there points.

We welcome on loan from Dartford Becka-kah Dembele , he is a utility player who is a fringe first team player with Dartford, he went straight into the starting line up at Dereham and I would expect him to be a big part of the team over the time he is with us. Aaron Rhule is no longer part of the squad, and we wish him well as he looks to find himself another club. Enjoy today’s match. Dave Joy Club Secretary

ROMFORD

Having beaten Dereham Town on their travels, Thamesmead Town return to home soil to take on Romford.

The Boro sit three places below the Mead and have garnered four point less, so this has the makings of a tight encounter. The two clubs firs collided in the Alan Turvey Trophy back in September, with a thrilling 4-3 games playing out in the favour of the Mead. Goal from Tom O’Connor, Paul Vines,

14

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Aaron Rhule and Ike Feehi were the difference. The two then met in January, with honours even after a 1-1 draw.

Romford have been hit-and-miss of late, with the club beating Dereham Town before losing to both Cheshunt and AFC Hornchurch. That said, they did bounce back with a 2-1 win over Witham Town, but failed to back that result up falling foul of a 4-1 loss away at Norwich United last weekend.

CLUB HISTORY This is the third Romford Football Club, both their predecessors having competed at some point in the Southern League, and each time having been defunct for fourteen years before the name was revived. Appropriately, it was at the Ice Rink that the first meeting took place in February 1992 to gauge interest in reviving the club. Over 150 people attended to hear the ideas of Dave Howie, and very soon the club was formed, a ground-share arranged with Hornchurch and senior status granted from the Essex FA. The club took their place in the Essex Senior League and with Lyndon Lynch at the helm, finished in ninth place. This was followed by fourth place in 1993-94 and third the season after. The summer of 1995 was all change, as Dave Howie stepped down and Lyndon Lynch chose to move on. With an almost entirely new committee and considerably improved financial backing, Boro started again from scratch, moving in with Essex Senior League rivals Ford United and appointing as joint managers the local dream ticket of Donal McGovern and Alan Marson, a partnership with a quite phenomenal record at this level and higher. They brought several of the squad with whom they had won the previous seasons Isthmian League Division Three championship at Collier Row, and proceeded to win the Essex Senior League with a record total of 91 goals from just 28 games. There was another period of upheaval for Romford in 1996, as the agreement with Ford was terminated and Boro finished the season sharing with Collier Row at Sungate. A merger was arranged between the two clubs and the new club, known as Collier Row & Romford, took Rows place in Division Two of the Isthmian League. Promotion was secured with three games to play and Boro overtook Leatherhead at the top of the table for the first time going into the final match, where a 3-0 win at home to Hungerford Town brought the championship to

Sungate. With McGovern and Marson moving on, former reserve team manager Les Whitton was promoted to become first team manager in the summer of 1997.

Reserve team manager Steve Wheeler took over the first team and managed to keep the side in the top half of the table on a reduced budget, but at the end of January chairman John Goodwin left to take over at Bishops Stortford, taking Wheeler and several players with him. First team coach Amin Levitt was immediately appointed manager the response was magnificent and the team remained unbeaten in the league for several weeks, however just when things were settling down again another bombshell came when the Sungate ground was closed by the League, due to the deterioration of the pitch and other facilities. Following a number of delays, Sungate B grading was finally re-instated on the opening day of the 1999-2000 season. However the Club soon found itself fighting relegation and Sungate went through another period of closure while urgent electrical work was carried out. The relegation threat was finally put to rest with three matches remaining, and Boro were more than happy with a final position of nineteenth. The constant uncertainty finally took its toll and Amin Levitt resigned in October to be replaced by John Bennett, but after a brief revival came a further shock in December as Boro were suspended by the Ryman League with no return to Sungate in sight Bennett left and Romford were left with no option but to release the entire first team squad. The Club were finally able to return to Sungate in mid-January, and former reserve team manager Paul Withey was appointed to the first team. Sadly, despite an injection of fresh blood the poor run of form continued into the 2001-02 season and Withey was replaced as manager by Paul Joynes at the end of August. Although performances improved considerably, Boro still finished the season well adrift at the bottom of Division Two.

THE OPPOSITION

A return to familiar territory in the Essex Senior League and back at Rush Green Road saw a strong recovery after the struggles of recent years, and Boro stayed on the edge of the leading pack all season, finishing fifth. Paul Joynes took up an offer to return to the Ryman League and Mark Reed stepped in to replace him, emulating the previous season’s fifth-place finish after leading the table for two months. In season 2006-07 Mark Reed lead us to our best season since rejoining the Essex Senior League as we finished runner-up to Brentwood Town. Then during the 2007-08 season Mark Reed stepped down for personal reasons and the then reserve team manager, Paul Martin was promoted to the job with Mark Lord as his assistant. Romford moved up the table to finish in 5th place. The following season Romford had to leave Rush Green when Fords sold the ground to West Ham United. A ground share agreement was drawn up with Aveley FC and Romford were able to carry on. In Paul’s first full season in charge Romford took the Essex Senior League by storm, winning the title with 71 points and losing just one game, and with it promotion to the Ryman League Division 1 North. With consolidation and avoiding the drop straight back to the Essex Senior a priority Boro got off to a good start, winning two of their opening four games. Then a lean spell came along when they found points hard to come by. Some changes to the playing staff saw a revival in fortunes and the team rose to finish in 13th. The start of the 2011-12 season saw Romford get off to a flying start in the league and added good runs in both national cup competitions. Despite the odd good performance Romford slowly dropped down the table to finish 12th. The clubs third season in the Ryman League saw us finish in 13th place, a drop of one on the previous season. The season 2012-13 saw a strong finish and Romford finally end up in 8th position, their best performance since gaining promotion to the Ryman League.

Last Wednesday, our academy lads had a home game against Millwall Trust. It was lovely to see parents of both teams supporting the lads and unfortunately we lost 2-1 with Luc Harpon scoring our goal after a terrific through ball by Kenny Stupples-Surrey. I was very pleased with how the lads responded after losing six-nil in their previous match – Emmanuel Odunaike, Reece Derose and Luc deserve special praise for their performances.

The satellite team in Gravesend won 2-1 in their last match, before half-term against Goodwin Academy who are associated with Gillingham, but lost on Wednesday 5-0 to Erith School who are connected with Phoenix Sports. Considering they have mainly 1st year players in their side they have done very well this season. Our Apprenticeship players have been training very hard and I’m pleased to announce that Jason Long has been brought in a couple of mornings a week to continue their development.

United (in the days when they were called Gravesend & Northfleet). He is a very good coach and has gained valuable experience and knowledge working for Dartford and their full time scholars, where he worked alongside first team manager Tony Burman – I’m delighted to have secured his services. Finally today and whilst talking of Ebbsfleet, it was with a heavy heart that I heard former captain and assistant manager Paul McCarthy had passed away at the young age of 45. I worked with “Macca” daily for eight years as we both ran the full-time academy scholars, and I can honestly say he was the most genuine and lovely guy you could ever meet. I have used his words of wisdom and advice on many occasions when talking to our crop of young players and it was an absolute pleasure to call him my mate. Life is so unfair at times and he leaves behind a loving wife and four beautiful girls. His love of football knew no boundaries and he shall be forever missed. Rest in peace Macca! Yours in sport.

BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT Malton (67)

Saturday 11th February Bayliss Avenue Attendance: 81 Ryman League

A solitary scrambled strike midway through the second half, with a hint of controversy, denied the hard working Mead what would have been a deserved point against opposition who kept in touch with leaders Maldon and Tiptree with the three points. The home side made one change from the previous game with Tom O’Connor returning to the starting eleven. Sadly for Tom, his afternoon was over after only 17 minutes as he had to be helped from the field by both Carly and Rhyanna in clear discomfort. Ware desperately looked for an equalizer and almost immediately Ollie made a brilliant spreading block to deny Appiah as he raced clear. The Mead goal had a narrow escape as the ball flashed across the face of goal before Rose headed over from a second corner in quick succession after the first one had resulted in a great scramble.

Both sides had good first half chances when Richardson hit the frame of the Thamesmead goal whilst Paul Vines brought an acrobatic save out of visiting keeper Cowler, before the visitors took the lead when Malton prodded home after keeper Ollie Bowles had saved from Rees. In the build-up however, the Brightlingsea Thamesmead Town Line-Up player appeared 1. Ollie Bowles Substitutes to have “fouled” 2. Harvey Brand Leon Smith, 3. Nathan Simpson 12. Ollie then kept the Mead in the game with two

stunning saves in quick succession – the Mead stopper first brilliantly pushed Turner’s thunderous free kick over with a strong left hand, before, from the resulting corner, showing incredible reflexes to keep out Gould’s deflected shot. Harvey Brand almost rescued a point late on for the home side – and nearly embarrassed the keeper at the same time – with a spectacular drive that thundered into the Brightlingsea cross-bar but the visitors held on for the points. For the Mead it was another afternoon of what might have beens but a vast improvement on the previous week’s disappointing display at Heybridge as they look ahead to their next game – another long trip to Norfolk, this time to face Dereham Town

3 THAMESMEAD TOWN Brown (14), Dembele (62), Teniola (81)

Saturday 18th February Bayliss Avenue Attendance: 149 Ryman League

The Mead secured just our second away win of 2017 with a come from behind in in Norfolk. Goals from Ellis Brown, Kaka Dembele on his debut, and Alex Teniola’s nineth goal of the season sealed the triumph as the Mead moved up two places to 13th in the Ryman North table. The Mead went ahead on 14 minutes when Alex and Jay Porter combined brilliantly in setting up Brownie who’s first shot was blocked only for Ellis to score the rebound. However, the home side were ahead at the break courtesy of two goals in the final eleven minutes of the half.

The Gaffer’s half time words seemed to work as in the second half, the Mead rallied well, and duly equalised through the debut making Kaka just past the hour mark ho scored with a good header. The comeback was completed nine minutes from time when Alex sealed the Thamesmead Town Line-Up points with 1. Ollie Bowles Substitutes another header 2. Harvey Brand and just the 3. Nathan Simpson 12. Alex Teniola side’s second 4. Bode Anidugbe 13. Max Ovenden away win of the 14. Michael Ademiluyi 5. Lewis Knight calendar year 6. Leon Smith 15. Jeremiah Efe and snapped 7. Kaka Dembele 16. Laurent Mendy a run which 8. Ellis Green has seen just a 9. Paul Vines solitary win in 10. Ellis Brown seven games. 11. Jay Porter

“We conceded another two poor goals,” admitted the Gaffer, “but on the plus side I’ve got to be delighted with the way that we responded – creating chances and getting in better areas.”

22

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

The game though ended on a sour note for the Mead as Bode Anidugbe was shown two quick yellow cards in the space of a few minutes which saw the Mead end with ten men. Whilst it took some of the gloss off of the win, the Gaffer as honest when he said, “I felt that the first card was harsh, and yes if I’m honest the red card did take some of the gloss off of the win. I’m bitterly disappointed for Bode as I think he’s having a great season, but I hope that he learns from these mistakes as a lot of people forget that he’s still young – he’ll learn!” “But at the end of the day, its a great win – a really deserved one that I hope we can take into next week!”
