THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

CHRIS BOLDER

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Salford City to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this evening.

It was obviously very pleasing to pick up our first win last time out against Bradford Park Avenue recently and a timely reward for all of the hard work the players and staff have put in. We have shown that we are capable of competing against some very good sides, but we haven’t been able to sustain this for long enough in games. However, two Saturday’s ago we created some good chances and defended well when we needed to. We had a good shape to us and all the lads demonstrated the key principles we are continuing to instil. Lewis Collins came in and joined us for training recently showing straight away the qualities he would bring. His overall application and desire was evident from the off and it was very pleasing to see him take that into the game last Saturday. Obviously he has come in from full-time

football which makes a difference in terms of sharpness and fitness levels and he showed that with the forward runs he made. I’m sure he will prove to be a very good addition for the time he is with us. We have been defending reasonably well of late and, take away some soft goals conceded, we have looked relatively solid. The areas where we were conceding a number of goals has now greatly improved and we are showing the kind of determination to stop the ball going into our net. Salford City are making excellent strides both on and off the field in recent years and will obviously be a really tough task for us today. They are having a very successful season and will be looking to be up there in the mix come the end of season. They have a very strong squad with experience, ability and managers who have proven that they can secure promotions. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE MANAGER

They had a very strong start and have shown that they are promotion contenders with some excellent results. However, they have had a mixed set of results in the recent games and will be keen to get that winning consistency back. We still have a couple of injury concerns, Brett Agnew and Jack Walters are continuing to battle with knee injuries and may be out for the foreseeable future. It was good to see Jordan Deacey come through from his recent hamstring problem and Jamie Forrester ongoing issues are being managed. Last time out was obviously disappointing against Darlington and there was a difference in quality going forward today in the first-half. They had five shots and scored from all of them. The manner of the goals we concede was disappointing. However Paul and I cannot be too critical of the players. They have been playing out of their skins in recent games. A lot of them have played at levels below this and are still adjusting. We were not as competitive as we have been recently. I’ve told the players that they have chance to put today behind them when we play Salford on Tuesday. Chris Bolder First-Team Manager

SALFORD CITY

It had been coming for a number of weeks, despite the upturn in results, but North Ferriby United’s relegation from the National League North was confirmed at the weekend. And now the challenges don’t come much harder than a Salford City side flying-high in top spot in the National League North with a two-point cushion to Harrogate Town in second. The sides met for the first time in the league at The Peninsula Stadium in November. The game was goalless at half time, despite Salford creating numerous chances, but Jack Redshaw seized the

initiative and scored four goals in the second half as the game ended 4-0. Previously Salford have only met North Ferriby in cup competitions. Most recently was an FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round tie which Salford lost 3-0, despite being 0-0 at half time. In the league last time out, Salford overcame the weather and Spennymoor Town 3-2 at home. Tom Walker scored twice in the second half as Salford came from 2-1 to win 3-2. The Ammies went ahead through Carl Piergianni’s before Nathan Lowe and Ryan Hall put Spennymoor ahead before the break. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE OPPOSITION

SALFORD CITY

RECENT HISTORY The club was formed in 1940 as Salford Central. We progressed steadily through local leagues until, in 1963, we stepped up to the Manchester League and changed the name to Salford Amateurs. Nicknamed “The Ammies”, the club became a real force in the 1970s winning the Lancashire Amateur Cup in ‘73,’75 and ’77. All the Manchester County Cups and the League title came our way and in one season of note seven major trophies sat with pride in our trophy cabinet. The ultimate prize –Champion of Champions – was secured in 1977. In 1979, after a decade of success, we took our first major step towards securing our status in non-league football. When the North West Counties League was formed in 1982, the foresight of upgrading the ground bore fruit and Salford seized the opportunity of joining football’s non-league pyramid. The transition hasn’t always been easy, but with the re-organisation into two divisions we eventually took our place in Division One. Salford appeared in the Manchester County Premier Cup Final in 1989 and the dropping of our Amateurs tag to become Salford City. With league restructuring in 1992 we regained our place in Division One and with ex Manchester United starlet Billy Garton in charge we finished ninth, our highest league position. The following years have seen improvement on this and under Andy Brown we finished third missing out on promotion only in the last few games. The last few seasons, under manager Gary Fellows, saw the club establish itself as one of the dominant sides in the Vodkat North West Counties League having won the League Challenge Cup in 2006 and just missing out on promotion in 2007 with virtually an all local squad. At the end of season 2007-08, the club’s immediate ambition of stepping up to the Unibond League was finally achieved when a

second promotion spot from the Vodkat League became available. During the 2012-2013 season early form was good under ex-professional Darren Sheridan, but he left the club in January and a disappointing second half of the campaign finished with Salford occupying sixteenth place in the league. Under the guidance of Andy Heald, Salford also reached the final of the Manchester Premier Cup, but a stirring comeback against Mossley was not enough as the Lilywhites triumphed on penalties. Phil Power arrived as manager at the start of the 2013-2014, initially in partnership with Barry Massay, but it was to be events off the pitch that dominated the campaign. Club president Dave Russell was contacted by five members of Manchester United’s ‘Class of 92’ side with the aim of exploring a possible takeover at Moor Lane. Having enjoyed stellar international careers, the five – Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville & Paul Scholes – are determined to ‘put something back’ into local football and wanted to do so in an area that reflected their early training and development. Salford City fitted the bill and the takeover was ratified by the club’s committee. After a good start to the 2014-2015 season, form dipped in the run up to Christmas and Power was replaced by Ramsbottom United managerial duo Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley. The new managers revitalised the club’s promotion push and 15 wins from 17 secured the Evo-Stik League First Division North title. Twelve months later promotion was secured to the National League North when Workington were beaten 3-2 at Moor Lane in the play-off final. The club’s first season at National League North level ended in play-off semi-final defeat, with Salford losing to FC Halifax Town on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw. During the summer of 2017 the club turned professional and an exciting new chapter in Salford City’s history is about to begin. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Born in Auckland, Max moved to the U.K. at a young age and started his senior career with Buckingham Town.

MICHAEL NOTTINGHAM Tall defender who was an integral part of the Solihull Moors side that won the National League North title in 2016. Michael can operate as a right-back, central defender or wing-back and has a real eye for a goal. After a great first season with Salford City was named as the supporters’ Player Of The Year.

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

CARL PIERGIANNI

LIAM HOGAN

Peterborough-born central defender who made the move to Moor Lane during the summer of 2017 following a spell with Australian side South Melbourne. A tough, uncompromising defender, with plenty of experience, Carl is a great addition to the reshaped squad.

Salford-born defender who can also operate at right-back, signed from National League Gateshead during the summer of 2017. An accomplished defender, Liam made the move back to his home city during the summer and will be a key part of the club’s bid to secure promotion from the National League North.

THE OPPOSITION

GUS MAFUTA Midfielder Gus started out with Colchester United’s youth set-up before moving on to Bristol City. He captained the Robins’ Under-21 side during the 2013-2014 season and had loan spells with Weston-SuperMare and Nuneaton Town. A powerful and skilful player, Gus made the decision to join Salford during summer 2017.

LOIS MAYNARD An integral part of the side at Tranmere Rovers he accepted an offer to move to Salford City during the summer of 2017 and the signing of this tall, dominant midfielder is another signal of the club’s promotion ambitions. A full international with St. Kitts & Nevis who has, to date, won 10 caps.

TOM WALKER Having impressed playing against Salford in two festive derby fixtures the player accepted a deal to turn fulltime at the Peninsula Stadium in January 2018. Adaptable, skilful and direct, he has already endeared himself to the club’s supporters and is a great addition to an already powerful squad.

RICHIE ALLEN

MIKE PHENIX

JACK REDSHAW

Attacking midfielder / striker who signed from AFC Fylde in September 2015. Richie attained genuine ‘legend’ status with The Coasters and up until his departure no player had contributed more goals to their cause. With his ability to conjure a goal, Richie has become a firm favourite with Salford supporters.

A direct and powerful frontman, Mike was the top scorer at Moor Lane last season with sixteen goals and accepted an offer to turn full-time during the summer. Manchester born forward who started out with Bolton’s academy before moving into non-league football with Hindsford.

A tricky, goalscoring forward Jack was released during the summer of 2017 by Blackpool and accepted an offer to sign a two-year contact with Salford. A real coup for the Ammies and he announced his return in style, scoring twice against former club Blackpool in a pre-season game at Moor Lane and is the current top scorer. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED

Saturday 17th March 2018 | Blackwell Meadows | National League North | Att: 1,087 This result, sadly, sealed Ferriby’s relegation. The scoreline does not fully tell the story, but it does sum up Ferriby’s season in some ways. Once again, opponents were able to turn chances into goals, while The Villagers struggled to find the net. The game was played on a heavy pitch and through regular periods of snow. By the end, the pitch was more white than green. The game was played in a strong wind, too, that blew down the pitch throughout. Considering the conditions, it was a decent-enough game, although Darlington adapted to them better than The Villagers. Darlington had the better of the opening 20 minutes and opened the scoring when Reece Styche’s long, cross-field pass found Stephen Thompson on the right and his low cross was tapped home at the far post by David Syers. Jordan Harrison and AJ George carried some threat for Ferriby as they looked for an equaliser, but it was Darlington who scored again. Durrant brought down Josef Wheatley as he tried to round the keeper and Thompson scored from the penalty. That was in the 28th minute and seven minutes later, it was 3-0 as Styche turned in Thompson’s cross at the near post. That goal probably sealed the game and two goals, before half-time Darlo made sure. Thompson hit a 25-yard shot into the bottom corner and Josh Gillies slid the ball past the advancing Durrant. Ferriby did go close to scoring. The home keeper tipped over a Luke Lofts shot and made a good one-handed save from Lewis Collins.

12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Going in five goals down was a little harsh, but Darlington certainly showed The Villagers how to score. The half-time score-line meant there was no realistic way back for The Villagers in the second-half. Given the weather conditions, both teams were probably happy to play-out the half. The referee was probably of the same mind, as he only added a minute of additional instead of the anticipated three or four. With little more than pride to play for, credit needs to be given to the Ferriby players for the way in which they kept going forward and looking for a goal. At times, they had the Darlington defence struggling and Lofts went close on three occasions. One shot hit a post, another was blocked by a defender, while a third attempt drew a diving save from Pears. Bobby Johnson and Collins worked hard throughout the game in midfield, but Ferriby lacked any real width to their game. Jordan Harrison battled-up-front throughout the game. The Villagers were grateful to another fine display of goalkeeping from Durrant during the second-half. He denied The Quakers a number of times as they threatened regularly. The final goal of the came after 69 minutes. A corner from the left was not properly cleared and the ball reached Gillies who fired home for his second goal of the game. Even that did not kill The Villagers’ spirit and they earned some praise from the jubilant Darlington fans for looking for a goal and playing some good football at times.
