CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of our neighbours VCD to our home at SCT, and I hope after an enjoyable game they have a short safe journey home. Whilst writing it would be very remiss of me not to give a special personal welcome to the manager of VCD Keith McMahon. Keith is a person that has been involved with this club for many years before he joined VCD both as a successful manager and director and was responsible for bringing me to this fine old Club in 2012 to join the board. He left the club in 2015 when he was made a VIP of the club and at that time I took full control of the club, so

Dartford’s Princes Park Stadium 04

welcome home Keith and enjoy your visit off the field! Well here we are, playing back at home after our long visit to Soham FC last Saturday where we took a mixmash of a squad due to suspensions, injuries and junior players not turning up at the pickup point. But there was no need to worry because we came away with all three points after a hard-fought match on a very uneven and soggy pitch resulting in three more injuries sustained through the game to key playing personnel. I was very proud of everyone involved in the squad and, on the day, they all did the job they were asked to do, and I could not fault the positive

commitment shown by all, so well done to all of you as I am the first to criticize. I am not too sure what team we will put out today due to the current list of injuries and suspensions but whatever I am sure they will do their best once again that’s all I and Tommy can ask for. As those that read my programme notes will know, I had given notice to our landlords Peabody at the end of last season due to not being able to agree a satisfactory way forward that would ensure the football clubs security of tenure so I had no option but to find a new home for the club. This was not going to be easy as there are many clubs that want the money for allowing ground share agreements,

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

but will not give the facilities clubs require, so this was always going to be our last season playing at the SCT. As per our league rules, all ground shares must be completed and sanctioned by the board by the 31st of March each year. Therefore I am pleased to announce that, after a long period of discussions, I have on Wednesday signed a five-year ground share with our neighbours at Dartford Football Club for our first-team to play all their matches at Princes Park from the start of the 17/18 season. This agreement has been sanctioned by the Isthmian League as per the rules. Bearing in mind that I started discussions earlier this season I was getting rather worried that I would not meet the required criteria, but with the input of Nick Robinson the League Chairman and the Joint-Chairman of Dartford FC Steve Irving we got there in the end. So I would personally like to thank these two gentlemen for their efforts and considerable input during this time it was very much appreciated by myself on behalf of this club. I feel that the facilities being offered by Dartford to our first-team on matchdays will totally fulfil our requirements both for the first-team, but also our supporters new and old. I am sure now that the news has been finalised, the rumours can stop as to

be honest the rumour machine has been working overtime citing where we are moving too, or even the club folding and going out of business. I am sure there will be many individuals that are either involved with the club or are supporters of the club that will not be happy or agree with the move, I have heard some say any move away from the SCT would kill the club. I totally disagree, but fully understand their feeling as many have followed this fine old club for decades. I personally believe that the troubles started for this club when they gave up its considerable security of tenure as a condition of moving into the new Stadium SCT without obtaining first from their Landlords at that time Trust Thamesmead an assurance of a fixed annual cost tied into a long term agreement rather than being offered only annual licenses that were unfortunately increased financially yearly, but as they say hindsight is a wonderful thing. I fully understand that Baylis Avenue is the spiritual home of the club, but unfortunately it has become a necessity to move away. Some will say my decision is radical and some may save brave to be taking the club out of Thamesmead, but beyond doubt it was the only positive solution other than letting the club die.

We all know no-one ever likes changes as they say if aren’t broken don’t fix it, well be assured, if I stopped funding this club it would be broken so I believe my knowledge of what’s best and is required for the club to survive is an agreement with a sound security of tenure included which I have achieved at Dartford. My first-team manager Tommy Warrilow who, with Ian Docker, has been fully involved with the moving process has suggested to me that the move is a must for the future of the football club, he feels that in time the club will become a much stronger on-and-off the field. Both he and Ian state we must embrace positively, the move can help to carry the club forward on its rise up then non-league pyramid because they both feel now that we are playing in “a Football Stadium” it will have a beneficial effect on and off the field with everything that the club will be involved in. Mike Green will be advising shortly all our community season ticket holders of the offer available should they wish to follow us to Dartford I hope you all will. I hope you enjoy the match Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

TOMMY

WARRILOW I’d like to welcome our friends from VCD to Bayliss Avenue this afternoon – and I hope that Keith didn’t get lost on the way to the ground today! It’s of course a local “derby” this afternoon and as I’ve said before, I’ve got some very good friends at VCD and I look forward to having a drink with them after the game this evening in the Mead Bar as we did at their place in December whatever the result today! I was very disappointed with the two sending offs in our last home games

against Romford. That day just went from bad to worse as two lads failed a fitness test before the game (Harvey and Tom); two then came off at half time injured (Kaka and Ellis Brown) and then the two sending offs in the second half. I felt that Romford are a good side and I felt that we could have got something out of the game despite starting poorly, but with all those obstacles in front of you it only makes it even harder.

Then going into last Saturday at Soham, who themselves have had some good results considering where they are in the league – fighting for their lives – we were really down to the bare bones. So I was very pleased to get a good win last weekend, especially when you consider the number of players who we had out. Never in all my years of management have I had to deal with the level of injuries and suspensions that we’ve got at the moment.

MANAGER’S NOTES

See you in the Mead Bar after the game. To compel that to lose Lewis, Archie and keeper Ollie during the game to knocks that I’m hoping will clear up in time for today, I thought it was a real credit to the young lads who came in and have become part of the squad – there were debuts for Sam, Richard and Max and they all played their part in what was a very, very good result. One of the best things for me was the fact that we had to change formation three times during the game because of the different injuries during the afternoon and the lads just adapted to each change so well and got on with it which for me makes the result such an outstanding result for the boys.

This week I’m hoping that we’ll get a few of the walking wounded back – I actually listed them out this week and we had a full eleven: it really is bewildering! Anyway, Kaka took a whack against Romford and I’m hoping that a couple of weeks rest for both him and Ellis Brown will see them included today. We’ve still got three suspended for today, but if the other boys are fit we should be back to some position of strength.

we are where we are and hopefully we can finish stronger and finish as high up the table as we can. Finally, I’d like to belatedly welcome Archie to the club as he’s joined us from Welling. He’s a lad who I’ve known a while and I was going to make a move for him pre- season, but thought he’d be more involved at Welling after they were relegated, but I’m delighted to have him in now and hope he gets some games under his belt and we’ll see where it takes us.

It’s been a really hard couple of weeks but the season is no coming into the final throws – of course we’d like to be higher up the table, but the bottom line is that we are where we are.

Thanks as ever for your support and we’ll see you in the Mead Bar after the game,

I’m sure that every manager has a story to tell and I’m no different but

We welcome our neighbours VCD Athletic to Bayliss Avenue today. I’ll be cheering the boys on from the sunny Dubai today, but leave my trusted sidekick Rhyanna in charge. She’s had a busy week in the treatment room having three new injuries sustained in Saturdays game against Soham. Knighty was substituted early in the first half after rolling his ankle within the first 5 minutes of the

game. We made the decision to withdraw Archie from the game at half time after he suffered a head injury in the closing stages of the half. Ollie was caught late on in the game and struggled with a dead leg which saw him leave the field after we secured our second goal.

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Good afternoon everyone welcome to SCT for today’s Ryman league game against our local rivals VCD Athletic. We welcome the supporters, officials and players and hope they enjoy their brief stay with us. Our last home game two weeks ago resulted in a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Romford, in a match where we never really got going and paid the price against a determined strong Romford side. We moved onto Soham Town last Saturday and, on a difficult playing surface, and against a side battling to stave off relegation we put in a superb performance.

Despite going a goal down on the stroke of half-time, goals from Alex Teniola, Bode Anidugbe and a well-taken last-minute goal from Michael Ademiluyi sealed a very well earned victory. I thought it was a pleasing performance, we worked hard battled against a direct Soham side and we lost Lewis Knight after eight minutes, Archie Johnson at half-time and goalkeeper Ollie Bowles after 75 minutes. The under-21 lads that stepped up did exceptionally well, especially Laurent Mendy who was outstanding, but it was it was a good all-round performance.

many years here working so hard re-structuring the club and is a most welcome guest. Likewise physio Alan Woodward and goalkeeper coach Steve Waite who again both spent many years with us and it will be nice to catch up with them all. On the pitch I would expect nothing but a tight game, VCD although not desperate, I’m sure would like to pick up valuable points to pull away from the bottom spots and a home win against Wroxham last week would have done them no harm. Enjoy today’s match.

Today’s opponents are of course managed by Thamesmead’s former manager Keith McMahon, who spent

against VCD could see them climb a further place result dependant. The Mead welcome VCD Athletic with more than one familiar face in their ranks.

The club picked up a thrilling 4-3 win over Wroxham last weekend before seeing their midweek game with Bowers & Pitsea postponed. The side are enduring a mixed run of late, but they need to pick up result in order to help aid their fight for survival.

CLUB HISTORY VCD Athletic FC is one of only a few clubs to have originated during the Great War when, in 1916 it was formed by workers employed at the Vickers armaments factory in Crayford.

League Cup, and the Erith Hospitals Cup. Season 1996/1997 then saw the club win the Kent County Premier Division title for the first time in their history, and by a record 15 points.

The Company originally played only interdepartmental games until it was decided that the best players from the various sections would be elected to represent the firm. The club have played at the firm’s sports ground, Oakwood, in Old Road, Crayford, from the outset right up to the present time.

Senior status was awarded that same year and a successful application was made to join the Winstonlead Kent League where, in their first season in modern times, VCD Athletic finished in a creditable ninth place.

In the early days, only friendly matches were played as there were no official competitions during the war years, and records show that a club called Vickers (Erith) joined the re-formed Kent League in 1919, changing their name to Vickers (Crayford) a year later. Vickers joined the Dartford & District League, followed by entry into the newly formed Kent Amateur League, Division One in 1923. Their first trophies came in 1927 when they won the Kent FA Junior Cup and the Kent Benevolent Cup. It was a further 25 years before more silverware came their way, when they won the Kent Division One title in 1953. The Kent Amateur Cup was won in 1962 and in 1964 but the following season saw a spectacular slump and relegation. Promotion was gained in 1969, but after a mediocre period during the 1970s, they were relegated in 1980 back to Division Two. A season later they were promoted back to Division One and in 1985 won the championship, gaining promotion to the restructured Premier Division. By now the Kent Amateur League had changed its name to the Kent County League and the club enjoyed further success when they won the Kent FA Intermediate Shield in 1988. In 1993, Martin Ford joined the club as manager and, in season 1995/1996 a unique cup treble was achieved with wins in the Kent Intermediate Shield, Kent County

The following season saw the club begin a ground-share with Thamesmead Town, finishing up in seventh place but also reaching the final of the Kent League Cup, where they lost 1-0 to Deal Town in a closely fought match. Deal at this time were assembling the side that was later to win the FA Vase at Wembley. At the end of the 2007 season Martin Ford resigned as manager, and the club are grateful for his vision and enthusiasm over the years. Head coach Dean Frost took over as caretaker manager, and under his guidance the club obtained runners up spot in the league and then the following season Paul Foley was appointed manager of the first team. A year later, the club finally won the Kent League Premier Division title together with the Kent Senior Trophy, culminating in the long awaited promotion to the Ryman Football League. The first season was a success with an 8th place finish, but the club were left stunned when the Ryman League deemed ground issues warranted demotion, and despite an appeal to the Football Association, the decision was upheld and the club went back to the Kent League. Manager Paul Foley resigned and the club appointed former reserve team manager Ricky Bennett his replacement. Under his leadership VCD achieved third place in his first season and once again the next season. Midway through season 2012/2013 Ricky Bennett left the club due to outside pressures, and in his place the club secured the services of Tony Russell.

THE OPPOSITION

With most of the players leaving with the previous manager the club was in disarray, but a side was quickly formed by the new management, and a magnificent record breaking run of 17 victories and 2 draws in the last 19 league fixtures enabled the club to once more gain promotion to the Ryman Football League Division 1 North. Starting as favourites for relegation, the club had a stunning run, winning the first15 games and heading the table for all but a couple of weeks throughout the campaign, and on the last day of the season, sitting in 2nd place the Vickers defeated Romford FC 6-0 while leaders Witham Town could only draw their last game which saw us secure the title by a point, taking the club to the Premier Division, its highest ever level. The club struggled for a lot of the season, spending most of the time in the relegation places but winning the last 6 games saw us climb to safety, finally finishing in 18th position to maintain our place in the division. Manager Tony Russell immediately resigned, joining Cray Wanderers FC in Division 1, taking his entire side with him but the club acted quickly to secure the services of Keith McMahon as new First Team Manager. Keith came with a wealth of experience having taken neighbours Thamesmead Town from the Kent League to the Ryman League Premier Division but, with no players at the club and only a few weeks to the start of the 2015/2016 season Keith was up against it from the beginning in trying to assemble a side to compete at the higher level. He worked tirelessly and brought in some excellent players, but despite some good performances we were unable to find the consistency needed in the Premier Division and were relegated back to Division 1 (North). Back on a square footing this pre-season we have seen a number of new signings arrive and we look to make our mark in the new campaign.

Hi and good afternoon everyone.

work and team play.

On Tuesday afternoon, the academy lads played Dartford on and crashed to an eight-nil defeat that left Coach Gary Ryan at a loss for words as he couldn’t believe how the lads performed!

Their pre-season is over and now once again the lads are going to have to step up in class to impress us and to achieve their goals. They are all looking forward to it and know what is required.

Earlier in the season we had drawn with them and Gary had heaped praise on all of them. Inconsistencies with individual, and team performance has been the biggest factor in the lads’ results this season and they must realise that consistency in their performance is the key to their development. The apprentices have now been assessed and put into two groups of ability and now our coaches can build on shape

Our satellite team based in Northfleet Technology College, have shown good progressions under new coach, Craig Clarke and continue to represent the school and our club to a high standard - well done lads! Now let’s get behind Tom and the boys this afternoon. Yours in sport. Ian Docker Academy Manager

Paul Vines’ 21st goal of the season wasn’t enough to earn the Mead the most unlikeliest of points on a frustrating afternoon at Bayliss Avenue.

The first half really didn’t get going with both sides struggling with the wet, cold, gusty conditions that hit Bayliss Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

brilliantly after McKenzie had initially got away from the Mead defender. Just before the hour mark, Leon Smith was shown a second yellow sending

After a disappointing first half, McKenzie put the visitors in front, before Leon Smith received a second yellow card. Things got worse for the Mead when Ellis Green was shown a straight red after clashing with Bichard who then scored the visitors second shortly after. Vinesy’ volley in stoppage time gave the Mead a glimmer of hope – hope that sadly came to nothing. Going into the game, the gaffer was already without Tom O’Connor, Harvey Brand and Nathan Simpson, but handed a debut to Archie Johnson and a home debut to Kaka Dembele. Sadly for Kaka it was to only last 45 minutes as he hobbled off at the break along with Ellis Brown and didn’t return.

Indeed it took until the last five minutes of the half for either side to have a shot of not – Archie vollied over the Mead after a Vinesy flick, whilst Ollie Bowles made a smart save to deny McKenzie.

The Romford number nine was though to have better luck after Thamesmead Town Line-Up half time as he headed the 1. Ollie Bowles Substitutes visitors in front 2. Laurent Mendy from close range 3. the Mead down to ten men. Leon in some eye’s was unfortunate as his “crime” second time around was connecting with the corner flag in frustration. Worse was to follow as Ellis Green also received his marching orders – this time a straight red card – after a clash with Bichard on the half way line, although some believed that the Romford man should have gone too for his part in the altercation. And those people were even more incensed shortly after as Bichard scored the visitors second and what as to prove to be the winner. Vinesy was in the right place at the right time in stoppage time to fire home, but the damage by then had well and truly been done.

3 THAMESMEAD TOWN Teniola (64), Anidugbe (71), Ademiluyi (90)

Three terrific second half strikes from Alex Teniola, Bode Anidugbe and Michael Ademiluyi sealed a come from behind win for the Mead at relegation threatened Soham Town Rangers. Already without the suspended trio of Kinch, Green and Smith and the injured Dembele, Brown and Brand, the Gaffer’s squad was stretched to such an extent that Richard Sexias – a late Friday loan signing from Dartford – went straight into the starting lining up and the bench was filled by four members of the under 21 Development squad – three of who would have an afternoon to remember! The Mead weren’t helped by another early injury that saw Lewis Knight hobble off in the opening 15 minutes meaning that Nathan Simpson switched from full back to central defense along Laurent

Mendy to form an unlikely but proved to be a highly effective partnership on the day. The game struggled to really get going in the opening half, but as the bells were ringing out from a local church, it was the Mead who had the early chances as Alex got on the end of a good ball in from “Little Mike” forcing home keeper Conroy into his first save of the afternoon. Archie Johnson was then denied by a horrible bounce before the home side had their first real chance when Carden raced clear only to be brilliantly denied by Ollie who stood tall and strong on the edge of the box as the Soham man tried to clip the ball over him. The Mead stopper though was helpless however as the home side took the lead on the stroke of half time when an unmarked Mulready headed home a long throw.

Saturday 4th March Julius Martin Lane Attendance: 122 Ryman League

The rejigged Mead though upped their game magnificently after the break and soon Alex was sprinting through to coolly side foot the ball over the advancing Conroy in the home goal to level the scores for his tenth goal for the Mead. Just five minutes later, Bode brilliantly cut in from the left to curl a stunner around the luckless Conroy for his seventh goal of the season – six of which have come away from Bayliss Avenue, before the Mead were dealt another potential blow when keeper Ollie Bowles hobbled off to be replaced by Max Ovenden with quarter of an hour to go. Max though was more than equal to anything that the home side could throw at him and after substitute Maina had fired narrowly wide for Soham, Max pulled off a top drawer save to deny Mulready an equaliser from a fierce free-kick. It was left to “little” Michael to gloriously cap a sensational personal week by following up his hat-trick for the Development side in midweek to magnificently drive home the Mead’s third in stoppage time after a swift break left the home side chasing shadows. Back to back away wins then for the Mead – and a very joyful trip home!

MATCH ACTIONSCHEME THE PASSPORT OPPOSITION

THE THAMESMEAD TOWN

PASSPORT SCHEME WELCOME TO THE TTFC PRIMARY PASSPOST!

BISHOP JOHN ROBINSON

The aim of the scheme is to invite ALL Primary School’s in Thamesmead and in the surrounding area to become a “School Partner”, and for all of their pupils to be offered the “Primary Passport” which will allow every holder FREE entry into any First team League game providing the holder is accompanied by an adult, who will be charged a reduced entrance fee of £5.00 as opposed to the “normal” Match day admission charge of £9.00. The club will provide training sessions at the school within the school curriculum itself or separately, and every “School Partner” will then be invited to be the “School of the Day” at a first team home game of their choice.

WINDRUSH

If you’d like your school to get involved, please get the appropriate person to contact MIKE GREEN at commercialttfc@ live.co.uk or on 07845 751319 to arrange a meeting… We’re delighted to welcome the latest two new schools into the scheme this afternoon – DISCOVERY PRIMARY SCHOOL and ST JOHN FISHER RC PRIMARY SCHOOL – and with more school meetings already in the diary for the coming weeks, will your school be next to join???

THE PASSPORT THE OPPOSITION SCHEME

THIS AFTERNOON’S

SCHOOL OF THE DAY LESSNESS HEATH The latest school to join us as part of our Passport scheme on a Saturday afternoon is LESSNESS HEATH PRIMARY SCHOOL. We asked the school for some words on what being here this afternoon and being members of the Passport Scheme meant to the school. Our reply came from the Head of School MRS KATY O’CONNOR… “Children at our school are well cared for, respected and valued for being the remarkable individuals that they are and I feel very honoured to have the opportunity to play a part in their learning journey. “We see every child as an individual and work hard to develop them academically, socially and emotionally. We aim to help them get the skills and knowledge they need

to be life-long learners and make the learning experience in the school as inspiring as we can. We want children to reach their potential academically but we also want them to develop into confident citizens for life in the 21st century.” “We’re delighted to be involved in the Passport Scheme and would like to thank Mike Green and the coaches – led by Gary – who have given our children the opportunity to join in such a worthy community scheme!” And this afternoon, we extend a warm welcome to a certain Mr Butler (a few of the Mead fans may know him) along with the boys and girls from the School and hope that you all have a great afternoon with us… and enjoy the new ongoing partnership between your school and TTFC.
