STOCKPORT COUNTY The standout fixture this weekend in the National League North pits North Ferriby United against Stockport County. Both teams had similar late victories last weekend with the Villagers earning a 2-1 win over neighbours Boston United. The top scorer in the division Dayle Southwell put Boston ahead before Danny Hone levelled the game. Danny Emerton snatched all three points for Ferriby with his strike in the 89th minute goal - seeing the club rise to second. The Hatters meanwhile, left it even latter to steal the three points against Hednesford Town. Goals from Obi Anoruo and Kayode Odejayi in injury-time saw the club win in the most dramatic of circumstances which will live long in the memory of supporters. The win maintained their solid form of late which has seen them pick up 17 points from their last 7 games.

Jim has had a highly successful spell as manager of Northwich Victoria since December 2013, and leaves the Cheshire side second in the EvoStik NPL Division One North following a successful run to the second round proper of the FA Cup.

Stockport County

CLUB HISTORY Established in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers, in 1890 the name was changed to Stockport County to reflect the town gaining County Borough status. After winning the Lancashire League in 1900, the County gained admittance to the Football League. Joining the Lancashire Combination; they won the League at the first time of asking and made an immediate return to the professional ranks. Joining the League meant the club soon outgrew their ground behind the Nursery Inn on Green Lane in Heaton Norris and, in 1902, to Edgeley Park. The club stayed in the 4th Division doldrums until the turn of the 90s, when Uruguayan manager Danny Bergara turned the Hatters into regular top-of-thetable challengers. Promotion came in 1991, and was followed by four visits to Wembley in two years - twice in playoff finals, twice in the Football League Trophy. Unfortunately County lost on each occasion.

Following Bergara’s departure in 1995, Dave Jones took charge and gave the club its most memorable season. After Jones’ departure for Southampton, County consolidated in the First Division until relegation in 2002. What followed was a largely downward spiral back to the bottom division. In came former player Jim Gannon as manager, who led the team to a remarkable run of form and eventual safety. This was followed by a promotion push in 2006/07 but they couldn’t make the Play-offs missing out. That success finally came the next season. After finishing fourth, Gannon’s side beat Wycombe in the semi-finals followed by a thrilling 3-2 win over neighbours Rochdale, finally ending the club’s hoodoo at Wembley. Unfortunately, the Hatters couldn’t build on that success and went in to administration before the final game of the season at Brighton. In 09/10 administration took its toll, and County finished on a new record low of 25 points North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

and were relegated back to the bottom flight. In the summer of 2010 the club was taken out of administration by a group of local business people, ensuring the club’s survival on the pitch the club finished bottom of League Two and thus relegated. The failed appointment of Dietmar Hamann saw Gannon return to the club who again ensured survival. In 2012/13 with his team in the lower half of the table, Gannon was sacked in January 2013 and replaced by Bosnian coach Darije Kalezic. Unfortunately results got worse, and with County staring at relegation he was replaced by former Gateshead manager Ian Bogie, but he too could not stop the slide as the club were relegated. Bogie left the club after a run of poor results and was replaced by County stalwart Alan Lord. Towards the end of the 2014/15 season Lord ‘moved upstairs’ to become Director of Football, and in May 2015 County secured the services of Neil Young as manager.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S

Frustration and missed opportunities in recent weeks for Ferriby but Sam Shepherd believes a win today could open the league up again... I always try to look on the bright side when it comes to Ferriby because one bad performance is usually followed by a very good one however this hasn’t been the case in the last few weeks andes but when one came they took it and with it the vital 3 points. Today we face Curzon Ashton in what is now a must win game in my opinion. Ferriby are not a bad side and every team goes through patches of poor form. We all know how good a manager Billy Heath is and I expect him to have Ferriby fired up to deliver a much better performance today and if that happens I’m sure we will come away with the win. A win today and a couple of results going our way would totally change the league table again so all is not lost.

Enjoy the game, Sam
